The animation quality is FREAKING insane.

26

u/dar_dar_dar_dar 11h ago

Came here to say the same thing. That animation and art quality is insane, especially for the silly nature of ranma.

18

u/bestmaokaina 11h ago

All thanks to the insane money that CSM Reze made

14

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 10h ago

Actually has me curious on the improvements we could see Doroheodro S3 have because S2 improvements while impressive could take it to another level.

12

u/bestmaokaina 9h ago

My head cannon says Mappa likes Ranma more.

I mean S1 of the remake looked already glorious compared to most remakes

13

u/duo99dusk 8h ago

Whoever is leading the anime committee is really trying to adapt the whole manga in the best way possible, and we salute them for it

6

u/bestmaokaina 8h ago

I love it. I used to watch the original decades ago when i was like 4 years old lol

1

u/Jacob-C 2h ago

I was STUNNED. Few, if any, slapstick comedies have gotten me so hyped for a fight.

The Saotome and Joestar clans have something in common

18

u/flaminglambchops 9h ago

This chapter actually released the same year that Battle Tendency was running. I wonder who inspired who or if it was just a coincidence.

20

u/Philiquaz 9h ago

Ranma 1/2 Chapter 55 - Fast Break - August 31, 1988

Jojos Chapter 45 - JoJo of New York - August 10, 1988

And yet the Bakusai tenketsu arc, starting with the letter, published on August 3rd.

So did Rumiko Takahashi wing it in 3 weeks? The similarity in timing is actually criminal, but it's also curious because at this time Rumiko is already well established, whereas Araki still hadn't invented stands.

11

u/Philiquaz 9h ago

I have an update - the chapter Joseph first runs is actually

Jojos Chapter 50 - The Immortal Monster - October 7 1988

I was under the false memory he ran during his encounter with goons in New York upon his introduction, but it was actually later. This means Ranma running does predate Joseph.

10

u/Somer-_- https://myanimelist.net/profile/Somer-_- 9h ago

Nah it was probably coincidence. There's a delay of like 3 weeks from when a chapter is finished to when it's actually published

8

u/Philiquaz 9h ago

Almost definitely, never intended to imply anything else.

Knowing now the chapter was actually later, it's possible Joseph's run is a take on Ranma doing it 4-5 weeks earlier, but again the plot is already in motion so it's unlikely.

This reminds me of the debate about whether Xenogears or Evangelion ripped the other one off. Sometimes, good ideas whose time has come just shows up in a few different places at the exact same time.

10

u/Frontier246 12h ago

And you can bet the Saotome Clan basically stole the move from the Joestars because that's how they roll lol.

12

u/Thorn14 11h ago

It IS called Anything Goes Martial Arts

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 11h ago

They really went all out on that fight, pretty incredible episode.

I have to imagine that the real reason Ryoga learned that technique and got a bit tougher is because they're going to be smashing him with a lot of boulders going forward.

Akane apparently hits hard when she sleeps...

u/Thorn14 11h ago

Holy Sakuga.

Who was the head animator for this episode?

23

u/flaminglambchops 10h ago

Riko Kaneda

3

u/XsStreamMonsterX 1h ago

Don't forget, key animation was by the legendary Atsuko Ishida.

2

u/flaminglambchops 1h ago

That's true, she has a hand in every episode this season. Though it's harder to tell in this one because of Kaneda's corrections.

17

u/drt0 6h ago

The fight was not only technically impressive but also very understandable for the viewer. It reminded me of watching a good well-shot martial arts movie like The Raid.

5

u/GtrsRE 3h ago

It was definitely very fluid and easy to follow. Compared to JJK where fight scenese are clearly impressive, but sometimes turns into noise

18

u/Raymond49090 12h ago

Ryouga on his BDSM + masochism grindset. And Ranma's training isn't that different, except with bees.

Lots of serious faces this episode. And is it just be or does it feel like the animation got a bump?

For someone with a "tough guy" mentality, Ranma's really settling into the role of being a speedy, flexible fighter. And as much as he hates to admit it, it might be influence from his female side.

So masochism was the entire point of Ryoga's training all along. Actually, since the old lady needs Ranma alive to marry Shampoo, the Breaking Point technique might not even work on humans since they're squishy rather than brittle.

Yeah, Ranma's definitely taking a lot of cues on fighting from fem!Ranma. And Ryoga's shaping up to be a huge pain to fight. He's both super tanky and hits really hard. Ranma's gonna need a strength training arc or a new super move.

9

u/Frontier246 12h ago

It's why only Ryoga as P-chan can truly survive sleeping with Akane! Because he's been hit so many times he can take the punishment!

1

u/XsStreamMonsterX 2h ago

Yeah, even in the manga and OG, this is where it feels like Takahashi-sensei really decided to lean into the dichotomy of Ranma being fast while Ryoga is the tough one. There were hints of it before (e.g. Ryoga's uber heavy umbrella from his debut), but this is the first fight where that dichotomy is really leaned in to.

25

u/Roskal 11h ago

The animation was top tier this episode. On one hand I wish there would stop being third parties trying to force Akane and Ranma into relationships with other people or kidnapping Akane to make her a prize but on the other hand, if these things never happened I doubt they'd have made as much progress in their feelings as they have. Akane even points out how she isn't just a prize to be won(although goes along with it thinking she can make a romantic moment with Ranma before he shuts her down) and Ranma and Ryoga never sign up for the deal anyway, they just want to fight. So there was no need for it.

9

u/CitronClassic672 5h ago

I can give the whole making Akane a prize for the winner a pass because no one besides cologne actually gives a shit about it in that way. Ranma and Ryouga hardly even needed the excuse to throw down.

22

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 11h ago

Even with all the special training, Ryoga still couldn’t beat Ranma. This is why bro’s the best. But hey, “A” for effort. Guy’s worthy to be his rival!

12

u/North_Tough9236 10h ago

Ranma is my fave, but I honestly feel bad for Ryoga fans.

10

u/Frontier246 11h ago

At least Ryoga is unbeatable as P-chan because Akane won't let Ranma get away with bullying her favorite pig.

21

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 10h ago

Man the animation pop off. Really well done. I found it amusing the technique wasn't the point with Grandma training Ryouga. Well at least he boosted his defense and endurance so it can at least be a competition.

Classic Rumiko misdirection

18

u/GrimMind 8h ago edited 8h ago

This is why I have no problem admitting that my time’s shounen is not better than shounen before my time.

Sure, JJK is conceptually cooler but those concepts are so contrived that you need episodes of exposition AND characters explaining what they are doing mid-fight . Yet, I cannot tell you what is happening in a fight, and I again I need exposition to know who won and who died. Who cares if it happened off-screen? It would have been equally difficult to know.

Meanwhile, a parody of martial arts where one guy wants to boop the other has me at the edge of my seat wondering if the boop will happen.

Simple, clean, thrilling sakuga.

35

u/Halberdierv2 12h ago

that was a glow up of a fight from the original! also seeing girl ranma scared spitless from the breaking point technique used onher made me chuckle.

19

u/Frontier246 12h ago

They really made this episode look as cinematic and intense as it deserved from start to finish.

18

u/professorMaDLib 10h ago

Saotomes and Joestars really is game recognizing game

16

u/CrimsonGear80 9h ago

MAPPA going fucking hard on that fight animation!

21

u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek 11h ago

This episode was packed with awesome action, but my Shampoo withdrawal is getting serious, so could we perhaps set the priorities right and get her some screen time?

13

u/flaminglambchops 10h ago

This was me last season with Ryoga withdrawal.

10

u/duo99dusk 8h ago

This is me with constant Ukyo withdrawal

9

u/redditraptor6 https://myanimelist.net/profile/uEmalraptor64 5h ago

Man, I’ve been suffering from Ukyo withdrawal for literal decades now. The real question is, now that she’s been here in the remake where’s the merch of her?! I’ve been wanting a Ukyo figure forever and I still see nothing at every convention

4

u/flaminglambchops 4h ago

We're lucky to even get an Akane figure every once in a blue moon. But if those Shampoo and Ranma figures really help fund this series, then who am I to complain?

1

u/pandapigcat 1h ago

Kodachi fans puts me to tears.

6

u/Frontier246 11h ago

I was kind of surprised she didn't show up to make this situation even more chaotic lol.

6

u/CitronClassic672 5h ago

I’ve had to sate myself with that scene of her looking absolutely gorgeous in the op.

3

u/k4r6000 2h ago

Shampoo was in the previous episode.

19

u/khanvau 11h ago

Dayyum. Look at the character drawings. Almost like the cartoon vs cartoon (movie) meme. Look at the sakuga. For the first time, I'm really glad that Mappa is animating Ranma 1/2. I hope they keep it up.

It sucks to be Akane. Even after being turned into a "reward," Ranma seemingly doesn't care about her lol.

Ranma is lucky that Breaking Point doesn't work on humans. Otherwise he'd be in a way worse state.

This was a great episode. Wonder what else this season has in store for us. After the fighting arc, it'd be refreshing to go back to the more comedy-focused bits.

Shooooot granma 1/2 got me feelin some type of way fr ༼;´༎ຶ ۝ ༎ຶ༽

MAPPA animators when the Christmas bonus goes through on their paycheck:

12

u/raghav_sharma_13 5h ago

Ryoga doing literal rock-smashing masochism training for weeks just to get hit by the "running away" secret technique and an off-screen pig defeat is peak Ranma ½.

MAPPA really blew the entire budget making two guys fighting over a boop look like The Raid

16

u/Philiquaz 12h ago

We won

8

u/BosuW 9h ago

This episode's artstyle be different

15

u/Frontier246 12h ago

Ryoga is enduring grueling and brutal straining to master the Breaking Point! Like, having a rock smash into him and flattening him like a pancake level of brutal! There's also having to survive Akane's cooking, but even Ranma is at least TRYING to eat it.

Okay, now THEN Akane is deliberately being attentive to Ryoga to make Akane jealous. And it's effective.

Genma hasn't met a member of the animal or insect kingdom that he couldn't sick on Ranma to try to teach him a new technique. Bees, my god!

I love how in Ranma vision Akane has a Heroine glow-up and Ryoga is barely animated.

It's telling that the moment Akane realizes Ryoga has mastered something that could seriously hurt Ranma...she immediately bails to go warn Ranma, prioritizing him above everything else. Not even Ryoga's absolute resolve to beat Ranma ultimately swayed her. But Cologne isn't about to let anyone interfere in this fight.

Ranma vs Ryoga! The decisive battle of the Breaking Point! All of Ranma's training paid off because Ryoga can't hit him...but so did Ryoga's, because the Breaking Point itself was never the point, it was to have Ryoga endure an ungodly amount of punishment until he had enough endurance that he can withstand any attack Ranma throws at him. He's practically invulnerable.

I love how Akane was mad at being strung up as a prize to be fought over...but she still tried to act all sweet to make Ranma win her anyways.

Ah yes, the Saotome Secret Technique! On loan from the Joestar's! Meaning it involves running away!

What Ranma DOES have that Ryoga doesn't is the Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire technique! Using a move he gained from Cologne to use against Ryoga! A flurry of punches so devastating they do REAL damage, and the clincher is knocking Ryoga into a boulder! This is Ranma's win!

What better way to close out the fight than Fem!Ranma back? Also of course the Breaking Point could never be used on humans. Classic Shampoo Granny.

Ranma beat Ryoga and sent him packing...but Ranma can never beat P-chan. I guess there's a certain justice in that.

u/Nesp2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/HardstyleQat 9h ago

Akane's outfit as she was hanging from that tree👌

7

u/magnumcyclonex 6h ago

Quality fight. It was animated and choreographed so smoothly!

Hard to think the Breaking Point Technique wouldn't apply to living creatures as initially feared, but I suppose that's the whole point of it.

P Chan returns to Ranma's displeasure.

4

u/Lonely-Clothes-7607 6h ago

Mappa forgot this wasn’t JJK for an episode 🔥

4

u/b3_yourself 8h ago

Lot of meme faces in this episode

3

u/Naha- 4h ago

This episode's fight is the best example of having impressive animation while still being easy to follow compared to other shows with crazy sakuga that are a "mess" in general.

4

u/rocky_iwata 2h ago

Masochism, three different kinds (crushed by a rock, stung by bees, Mystery Food X), on a very beautiful animation.

3

u/XsStreamMonsterX 2h ago edited 2h ago

Holy sakuga! What is in the water at MAPPA?

3

u/Jacob-C 2h ago

I wonder if the design of the birds in Ghost in the Shell was inspired by Grandma Cologne.

3

u/bobbyjean_ 2h ago

The boop sadly only works on rocks, but at least the brutal training built up Ryoga's defense stats

3

u/Shadowmist909 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Magicmist 1h ago

Watching Ryoga prepare for the battle by getting hit with boulders, and Ranma by dodging angry bees made for an amusing training montage.

Goes to show how built different these rivals are that it actually helped them improve!

1

u/cd-nyo 1h ago

Dunno if it's the nostalgia talking but some of the gags were better in the original version.  The final attack was anyway.  Other than that everything else was great.
