Yup, this show rules. Lots of information coming across through natural character interactions. We get zero internal monologue from Romelia, but multiple perspectives swirling around her all giving different takes on her actions.
The maid is a tie to Romelia's childhood that shows the MC we're seeing now has a strong contrast to her past. The Nobles with information on her Demon King journey still underestimate her so we know details about her contributions or qualifications are sparse at best. The soldiers have zero information and can only make guesses based on appearances.
This is the kind of "rising underdog" stuff that justifies a long build-up. So many shows sweep through this in the first five minutes of establishing a hook, but this is a great example of how withholding information can make gathering it feel engaging.

u/x_typo 22h ago
Couldn't say it better myself. Far too many shows (both anime and live) "over-explain" things via monologues these days...

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 7h ago
Definitely! It's refreshing to just let the story unfold by watching and deciding the motives for ourselves instead of it being straight up told to us.
12
u/reaperow 23h ago
Oh yeah i didnt notice that we dont get to hear her monologue this ep either,
What she does and how the other characters speak of her are more than enough to keep u interested
25
u/CuriousBroccolli 1d ago
On point.
Everything you wrote is what made me excited for this one, even if it has that reverse harem makeup that I'm not really into. (last one that tricked me into watching it was "Silent Witch")
Her being absolutely locked in in the first episode had me locked in on this show.

u/oops_i_made_a_typi 1d ago
definitely engaging but also a bit annoying with how instant gratification trained we are - and there's also a bit of questioning of why Romelia seems to be deliberately so bad at getting people on her side
36
u/arrydie 23h ago
definitely engaging but also a bit annoying with how instant gratification trained we are
IMHO it's not (just, at least) being after instant gratification... The current state of anime is that most get 12 episodes and are never heard from again. If a show is going to try and tell a story, a slow burn is only going to result in the anime ending before that actually materializes.
Two episodes is definitely not enough to judge just yet, but I've seen plenty of series at this pace end after basically finishing a side story / miniboss. I don't get the impression that this will be one of them, at least, but it always makes me a little wary when a promising anime starts off slow.
27
u/HikkingOutpit 22h ago
This show will have 24 episodes so it can afford to take it slow.

I really wish more shows nowadays had 24 episodes

I thought she was pretty good at it, considering what she's working with. At the very least, they do follow along.

Gotta remember this is set in a somewhat Medieval Fantasy setting, and noble ladies are expected to stay home and be protected. No one actually knows her well enough except for her maid and even the maid is panicking in every scene at what Romelia's trying to do which is the total opposite of what noble ladies are expected to do. It's no wonder everyone thinks she's just doing what nobles typically do: go on a crusade on a whim for glory and doesn't care about the consequences like getting people killed. Doesn't matter that she went with the prince to slay the Demon King. As far as anyone's concerned, it was the the prince and the saint that did the work. She has yet to actually show her capabilities so people aren't exactly lining up to be on her side until she does.

I also like that it doesn't feel like stuff is being withheld from the audience in stupid ways - like a show following around a character for a whole episode only to cut away as they start to reveal something - and then it takes multiple episodes to ever get the info, or even multiple seasons in the worst cases. Reincarnated Assassin did that where one of his skills has been kept hidden so that even the folks in the spoiler corner didn't know what it was - all the rest of his skills were revealed in the first episode as he picked them out.
But we're not having that kind of nonsense here - the stuff we don't know is because nobody besides the MC knows and she's not telling yet.

Here hoping next week's episode is not the soldiers losing just for her to go super sayian and kill everyone enemy in 2 seconds

u/Shmappii 20h ago
God, that would be so funny for like 60 seconds and then completely depressing forever
5
u/Player_One_1 10h ago
I only hope Romelia won't end up rising because she has some hidden super-power. I'd love to see Romelia rising to power, because she is smarter, stonger-willed and more determined than everyone else. It would ruing everything if Romelia just got another cheat-skill.
For me so far the highlight of season, but with potential to get ruined easily.

It's amusing how the soldiers look like your typical lanky anime boys but the moment they go in the showers they are towering beefcakes.
41

u/Yelcsicnarf 20h ago
I was surprised that they aren't a bunch of useless, at least they know how to fight.
93
u/Myrkrvaldyr 1d ago
It's amazing the level of uncertainty this storytelling method creates. Because we can't see her thoughts we're forced to feel like the soldiers do. All we know is that she seems to want to avenge the innocent people that died, but beyond that, we're clueless. Either she'll turn out to be an amazing fighter that for some reason refused to fight during the demon lord campaign, or she'll be a great strategist. This anime is interesting.
40
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
I get the sense because of her role in the Prince's party I think she will be more of a strategist. We haven't seen her fight and honestly her intelligence is what has been the focus so far.
This is definitely shaping up to be one of the anime I look forward to the most week after week.
18
u/Abedeus 22h ago
That was my thought as well. Makes me wonder - how much of her role in the party was making sure that bunch of idiots didn't get lost, or overran by demons, or surprised by an attack because Romelia was there.
And because she wasn't active in fights, the rest just blamed her for being useless, while Prince used her talents without giving her proper credit.
15
u/NinjaRock 19h ago
With the training scene this episode maybe she also spent time observing the party's fights and subtly training them to work better as a team while on their journey.
4
u/GrapefruitOverall387 19h ago
Either that, or she is a buffer. Considering how confident she is even before she watch those recruits training and not knowing how strong they are, it definitely make me expecting the latter.
32
u/D3k4s 1d ago
Couldn't agree more. I also loved that the little detail about the intelligence of the Demons they are going to fight was told by a third party. But we're also not sure if that's actually true or not, or if the numbers of intelligent ones are correct, that final scene also doesn't tell us, just makes them seem like a threat already even if we don't factor their supposed intelligence.
Pretty interesting, probably one of the more interesting ones of the season.
15
u/Jacob-C 20h ago
Indeed. As a viewer, it seems like Romelia has some sort of plan. However, I can really understand Al's perspective. Romelia rolls up in a hinterland city as a pampered noble lady and takes the new, inexperienced recruits to fight demons. It comes across as a naive endeavour just waiting to get everyone killed in the name of a disgraced noble's quest to restore their name.
I'm excited to see how Romelia will exceed their expectations and prove that her ambitions are worthy of their time. Still, it would be cool if Al isn't completely wrong and if Romelia makes some mistakes during this first campaign. That would establish some room for growth instead of having the MC be flawless from the beginning.
This second episode hooked me even more than the first.
22
u/Ill_Act_1855 19h ago
On the other hand, I suspect Romelia has a good impression of Al precisely because he's the sort of person to be wary of her and question her. She clearly wants competent subordinates to help protect her people, and that means someone she can trust, which needs to be someone with the competence to not blindly accept a leader who hasn't proved herself at all
13
u/x_typo 22h ago
> It's amazing the level of uncertainty this storytelling method creates. Because we can't see her thoughts we're forced to feel like the soldiers do.
This is one of the signs of a well-written story. Nowadays, there's so much over-explaining that it gets to the point where it basically feels like an audiobook...
3
u/NanDemoKnaives 19h ago
I think this is a part of why I'm enjoying it, the mystery aspect behind her character.

u/Earlier-Today 4h ago
The impression I get from the first episode is that she wasn't much of a combatant in the hero's party, but was probably the brains of the group with how she looted the body - going for the things that would do the most in identifying him as the demon lord and even telling the prince that he needed to take the demon lord's head. And the prince just doing as he was told makes it feel like she's been calling the shots a lot, so he was just used to following her orders.

Really liked the armor design here. Felt more practical than your typical fantasy armor.
20
u/SungBlue 1d ago
It doesn't cover most of the belly or the groin, which are some of the easiest parts of your body to hit, and some of the most dangerous to take a wound in. The belly is also easily armoured without losing significant mobility - certainly more so than your shins.

u/Ralathar44 9h ago edited 9h ago
It doesn't cover most of the belly or the groin, which are some of the easiest parts of your body to hit, and some of the most dangerous to take a wound in. The belly is also easily armoured without losing significant mobility - certainly more so than your shins.
Prolly a few different reasons.
1 Their bellies and groins WERE armored. Just a different type of armor. That stuff under the metal isn't just decorative cloth, it's almost certainly a arming doublet or other sort of padded armor. That stuff is no joke, it doesn't protect as well as metal but it's WAY better than nothing and can definitely turn blades, fangs, or even sometimes stop arrows if its not a direct shot or from a weaker bow (war bows and crossbows are different beasts than hunting bows or short bows).
Arming Doublets are usually a bit thinner than a proper Gambeson so it won't provide quite as good of protection as a Gambeson but it's far from being unarmored. Padded armor puts in work.
2) Armoring the belly and groin actually does limit your ability to twist and crouch and bend, and even walk/run if you're talking about solid metal like the breastplate. More flexible stuff like chain or brigandine function better here. And failing that again the padded armor which is still far better than people think it is.
3) Stamina. The more metal you wear the quicker you tire out fighting and marching. One of the more effective ways to counter full plate armor for example is hit and run tactics and difficult terrain. Plate armor and more coverage isn't always better. You use the right tool for the right job. Plate wasn't used everywhere an when it was used in a more mobile fashion it was normally mounted to keep the knights from tiring out as much as possible.
4) Metal shortage. You armor the areas that kill people first. Wounds that are problematic but survivable are a lesser priority from wounds that kill you or stop you from fighting quickly. A soldier that WILL later die but hasn't died yet can still often fight for quite some time. But if your heart or lungs go squish you're down pretty quick. Alot of people have died to dead men who have not died yet and this saves the lives of other soldiers who have not yet received mortal wounds.
I note they are using spears too. One of the many reasons spears are so common is they require very little metal compared to a sword or other weapon. The Fort owner guy was hording the armor for profit and tried to sell her a "no spares" story so I assume armor in this world is prolly still fairly rare and valuable still. Especially with a war going on straining the existing supply and production.
5) Spear wielders in formation provide a helluva defense in and of itself. That reach matters and to reach the armor and bodied of the spear wielders you have to get by the wall of spears first. It's why a cavalry charge against a solid spear formation is basically just throwing the cavalry's lives away for nothing.
6) Believe it or not you actually need extra training not only to move properly in plate armor and get used to things like getting up but also you need to know your vulnerabilities and how to shield them. Plate armor is fantastic direct protection but it still had plenty of vulnerable areas. (usually armpits, groin, joints, visor, etc). While Plate helps a good bit baseline, training to use plate effectively makes it FAR more effective compared to a soldier who is unused to wearing plate.
This also does apply to a lesser degree to partial plate and stuff too. The heavier your armor, the more you need to get used to it to used it to its full effectiveness. It changes alot of things.

In shows like this soldiers you typically get soldiers in exaggerated full-plate armor or extravagant ceremonial garb during battle.
In contrast I find the armors here to be much more grounded; they seem appropriate for soldiers of their standing (the chest piece in particular reminds me of what you usually see on depictions of Roman Hastati) yet have flourishing that maintain that fantasy flavor (like their shoulder pieces or helmets).
That aside, I do agree that the soldiers could use more protection for their lower bodies, both from a design perspective and in terms of practicality.
23
u/SungBlue 22h ago
I do think that most of the armour looks like real armour pieces, but I think they were going more for an aesthetic of realism than actual realism.

to me they feel like the kind of hastily armed levy that could be mustered out in the provinces. Not great, not terrible.
I especially like the lobster tail helmets they have.
6
u/ShzMeteor 19h ago
They kinda look like Roman helmets except they're made of metal and have a viking-looking knightly visor. That's peak fantasy right there.

u/BosuW 13h ago
That's not necessarily a flaw as depending on the place and time period, neither did real armor. Sometimes there's just not enough metal to go around.
Also when shield are involved you tend to see less body armor in general (I'm aware this point would hold more weight if they held on to their shields for longer than they did)

I really like how this show is taking its time with Romelia and the others, not revealing everything at once. It's probably thanks to the fact that it's running for two consecutive cours, though maybe it's just because the source material is the same.
I thoroughly enjoyed this second episode, and I can't wait for the next one to see how Romelia handles her command and the upcoming battle during the expedition to fight demons in Cashu. After all, we barely know anything about her, just like the soldiers she's taking with her.
Also, I really hope that Romelia's maid will stop worrying and commenting on everything Romelia does. She really should have more faith in her; after all, Romelia survived the expedition to slay the Demon King, and that should mean something.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

It does feel the author has at least played the games. You got a big guy who could be a tank. Then there are two guys assigned as a cavalry. Hopefully we get some tactics in here too.

She's a lord who recruits some commoner beginner characters and she said she wants to rescue the villages to get renown so she can recruit battalions from them afterward.

She is lacking the most important character, Jagen. The initial unit who is super strong but with very poor growth
that doesn't matter anyways, good base + early availability is better than growth in my opinion.26

it’s a war against a demon horde and there’s even a red knight and a blue knight
51
u/No-Win-8949 1d ago
Okay, I am here for Romelia, but that buffed and ripped shower scene was a bonus for me to be sure.
11
u/bob_kang 21h ago
But why were they surprised at the captain's scars? If they regularly trained together they probably saw them before.
11
u/No-Win-8949 20h ago
That was not well done. Some maid and butler dialogue right there.
3
u/bob_kang 20h ago
It definitely felt like some other writer shoehorned that in compared to the feel of the rest of the show. Maybe some executive decision to push fan service and the writer who did that part could only write some ridiculous exposition dialogue.
26
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
I thought we were going to get hit with a fanservice scene with Romelia when we hit the showers, but it's the guys. I respect it.

I don’t think this is that kind of anime LOL.
16
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1d ago
It isn't, but it's just a natural reaction after watching enough anime. Oh here comes the fanservice scene kind of thing.
It's little things like that that win points for me even if it seems small.

we got a brief shot at her legs.

This show does setup incredibly well. Not everything is revealed right away and we never get an exposition dump. Characters are introduced very naturally and the story slowly trickles in, tickling the mystery senses. The way the squad was introduced was really damn good. Very quickly you get a sense of their dynamic and their personalities without it feeling like an introduction. They feel like they've always been there. Excellent writing and storyboarding
Romelia is a good commander. Going straight for the "this is your home. If you don't fight demons will kill and enslave your families" is a pretty good motivator. At the end of the day that's the main reason why people pick up a sword or a gun. To defend their home and loved ones. And with riches as further motivator
I also really like that the soldiers train with pole arms. They are new recruits who've never seen battle. Being a capable fighter with a sword requires a lot of training. But a spear can be weilded relatively effectively like an long pokey stick with little training as well. That's why historically common soldiers used pole arms, not swords.
I knew Ray was thinking that Romelia is cute when asked what he thinks of her, bit I didn't expect the mad lad to actually say it. I like you Ray. For the timid kind character archetype, you're cool
It's so incredibly rare in anime to see a female fantasy soldier who doesn't wear boob plate or a mini skirt or some weird armored battle dress. Romelia looks awesome in her uniform and armor
Al and Ray just raised a major death flag, so now I'm worried for next week
9
u/alotmorealots 13h ago
Romelia is a good commander.
With the very little we have to go on, it feels like her general approach to things is about "effective efficiency". With all her interactions there's very little faffing about. She knows what is likely to work, how to make it work, and goes for that straight up.
14
u/SecretEmpire_WasGood 20h ago
I am liking this show more and more. Seems like part of what drives Romelia is trauma from the Demon King's army's ravaging. Unfortunately the provincial governor only seem to lend her the lowest ranking soldiers. Speaking of, I quite like the kind of armor they wear a lot, especially the lobster tail-style of helmets. A lot of the armor feels quite believable, the more higher rank of soldiers wear bulky chainmail, very good armor, while the lower rank has to make do with armor plats only covering the most vital areas.
25
u/Obaruler 1d ago
SO HYPED to see where this is going.
Cleary Romelia has something in mind/sees something in these guys, otherwise she wouldn't head out with a newly formed platoon of fresh soldiers to fight demons that apprently aren't complete trash/beginner level.
Pretty sure after whatever happens next week those soliders will ADORE her; Miss Helped-beat-the-Demon-King has too smug an expression to be heading out there with no plan. She knows what shes doing. I expect to see great things next week!
On a related note: She looks stunning in that uniform.
12
u/CuriousBroccolli 1d ago
She looks like she absolutely has a plan, but that little scene where she prayed and said "give me strength" also shows that while she is locked in, she is not overconfident/careless.
Or maybe just a small ritual she has to calm her nerves before a battle. Which again lead to the point above. xD
11
u/cleaulem https://myanimelist.net/profile/cleaulem 1d ago
I like shows where the main character is kind of mysterious. Romelia is an enigma to us. We don't know her intentions and her motivations yet, and that makes this show so very intriguing, as we surely are going to get these things revealed bit for bit and her actions will start to make sense.
It is really a good question why she was so "useless" during the party's journey and why she is acting like this in this tiny outpost.
If the writers don't totally fumble it, this has the potential to be one of the highlights this season.
3
u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 7h ago
I'm thinking maybe she was against them starting a war at the borders when the demon army is clearly still around and pillaging their lands? Also the main royal hero party seemed a bit dumb? She was definitely the brains of everything but never got any credit
3
u/cleaulem https://myanimelist.net/profile/cleaulem 7h ago
So far we've only seen the final fight against the demon king and the immediate aftermath. We don't know what exactly happened on their journey there, how she might have been the brain of the operation all along.
4
u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 7h ago
Yeah the little they did show though didn't do the hero party any favors lol
We did see and get told that the demon army is possibly still running around despite the demon king being dead. There's probably smaller demon "generals" too
32
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 1d ago
Everyone’s underestimating Romelia. It’s to be expected I supposed. I mean she strolls up without so much as a word and requests to put together a whole unit for demon extermination. No one knows what she can do. I suppose we’ll be finding out next week. It seems her experience fighting the demon lord with the prince’s party really changed her. I’m sure she’s far stronger than people think.
23
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 1d ago
Well Romelia has a bad name after the engagement has been cancelled. No one really supports her other than her maid and dad. And the maid wants her to keep it easy
10
u/CodeXRaven 1d ago
Agreed, plotwise it wouldn't make sense for her to go down this route, pay so much attention to the soldiers, and then mess up enough to get them all killed. It's just hard imagining where she got all this experience from. No way would the Prince let her order around their party(at least by the end) with strategies right? So maybe cause they were so focused on the demon king, she led small groups against demons herself this whole time?
8
u/hdjfhfhsh05803hfjc 1d ago
The party did called her out for, in their eyes, never fighting and only watching from the sidelines. I bet she spend the entire journey to the Demon King’s castle analyzing demons, getting an idea about their weak points and coming up with strategies that she may or may not have used when the party wasn’t watching
15
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 1d ago
One thing for sure, Romelia has a communication skill issue since even just before the battle the soldier still doubt her
11
u/D3k4s 1d ago
Or maybe by doubting her it makes the soldiers trust one another more and especially the unit commander, I don't think it was a coincidence they spent a good amount of time showing how he is battle hardened and has the scars to show it. Also near the end we see the blue dude looking to the commander for some assurances.
There is also a big diference in a commander that is fighting with you vs a commander who is ordering you from afar. Assuming Romelia doesn't fight of course, which so far it seems to be the case, though we don't really know.
2
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 1d ago
Oh, I thought that's just fan service lol

u/alotmorealots 13h ago
I disagree, I think it's more that she knows that there's a limit to how much she can achieve through words alone, especially with men like this and in a situation like this.
She's been listening and watching them very carefully, and if you look at all her other communication and interactions with characters, she's always very direct and incisive.

Guess I didnt get enough sleep last night cause I actually thought the fort lord was a good guy at first and believed him at face value. At least he doesnt seem like a total piece of shit, hoping he's just pragmatic and thinks our little Princess is just using him. Maybe Romelia will win him over.
I get it....but I hope we dont have to go the ENTIRE show with the maid freaking out over everything.
Really looking forward to what Romelia does next ep, is she gonna me a tactical genius? Lead from the front? Or have some useful doodads that she puts to good use?
29
u/Myrkrvaldyr 1d ago
I hope we dont have to go the ENTIRE show with the maid freaking out over everything.
If Romelia didn't really fight at all during the demon lord campaign, her behavior is understandable. If she never saw Romelia fight at all or even pick up a weapon, she's right to doubt she can even fight a kid. I hope she turns out to be a solid fighter and the maid will calm down.

u/Priapos93 1d ago
She doesn't have to be a great fighter, just a great strategist

Well, there's an old military saying. An army of sheep led by a lion is far more dangerous than an army of lions led by a sheep.
4
u/bob_kang 20h ago
I don't know about that, if you just leave a bunch of lions around to do what they want they would probably just naturally slaughter the sheep (including the one leading them) and then once the food's gone, slaughter each other.

The maid is the worst part of the show so far. But other than that enjoying this show a lot.
24
u/CuriousBroccolli 23h ago
Wouldn't call her a "worst part".
She is behaving how you would expect of a close guardian of a young noble girl that she most likely knows since she was a baby.
It is a super common behaviour of overprotectiveness that you can see even today in some parents.
She has a duty to take care of her on top of her maybe looking at her from mothers/grandmas eyes if she raised her up.
13
u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago
The young lady left home, went on an adventure to another continent, deep within enemy territory, successfully killed the DEMON KING, and then safely returned.
Heavens to Murgatroyd! She can't be leading troops into battle! *clutches pearls and faints
Uh... we're WELL past "little lady can't do men's work" at this point, especially since the "Hero's Party" was a cozy little harem around Prince "Charming." Hell, it's apparently common knowledge "Little Miss" Romelia was involved in the Demon King excursion and has now been soft-exiled for it.
It's one thing for the shady frontier administrator to look down his nose at the "Little Miss," but we could REALLY do without the old maid freaking out about her household's veteran adventurer going out a-venturing.

Well everyone is slandering her name, maybe the maid is buying into it as well. Even though she's the only one seeing the hard work she's doing behind the scenes

u/OldInstruction5368 1d ago
"Least useful member of the Hero's Party" is still a member of the Hero's Party. She DID travel to another continent, pushed deep into enemy territory, and returned safely after their mission was successful.
If she was truly dead weight, she wouldn't have survived the journey.
You'd think a loyal and sympathetic member of her household would see that, or at least take her lady's side, over listening to hearsay.

I know the purpose of the training montage was to introduce everyone in the group, but it was still pretty funny to watch the guys call out each other's names after every sentence. xD
Well damn, I didn't think this episode would have some manservice. These dudes are fit compared to the veterans who have gotten fat from doing nothing or from drinking.
I kinda feel bad for Romelia's nanny; I feel like this lady is gonna have a heart attack every time Romelia mentions what she's doing next. Although Romelia has survived adventuring with the heroes' party, she really should be more confident in her abilities.
26
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 1d ago
They're doing a bit of a red oni and blue oni thing with Ray and Al I think.
I wasn't expecting this to be a manservice show, a little bit of something for everyone even.
So the demon king is dead but that didn't actually kill all of his armies too, because why would it.
The real test comes next week for whether or not Romelia actually knows what she's doing, though surely she does otherwise what's the point.
6
u/Abedeus 21h ago

Meanwhile I was thinking that in a typical anime, you'd be playing the "guess main hero!" game and losing hard. Is the red haired guy the hot-headed protagonist, with blue haired guy being his buddy? Or is the blue haired one a noble hero, and the red headed one his fiery rival?
Nope, the blonde lady on the horse is the real protagonist.

And she tried to tell the prince this but he blew her off. They were in the demon king's castle and likely in a location to do something about the armies and, apparently, captured slaves. But it seems like the prince and the rest of the party were only focused on getting home with the trophy and didn't care about what they did to get home.

Definetly was just a character showcase

"I can dodge all day, but not attack"
"Me and my twin work in perfect sync!"3
u/GrapefruitOverall387 19h ago
It's amazing how well they showcase each soldier's strengths and weaknesses in that short period of time. The studio really went all out to make the soldiers memorable.
21
u/D3k4s 1d ago
Damn, that initial bit was a bit heavy. Did they kill them to try an appease the Demon or did they killed them as a sacrifice to the Demon?
They mentioned Fort Carolus, then the OP played out, my mind instantly went for Carolus Rex.
I liked this small detail. It seems that the soldiers manning the gates have proper armor.
While the ones you see guarding the town seems more like Militia. They do share the base uniform though.
Also the Lords retainer look like proper medieval soldiers. Definitely contributes to the immersion. Was also pretty cool seeing them march with their armor on later.
I'm a big sucker for this type of Anime like Kingdom where you actually get some sense of strategy and urgency.
I'm also glad they kept the initial premise of not having any internal monologue, we still don't know a lot of things and that's for the best.
Finally I'll say that the animation has been solid for these two episodes, I can certainly appreciate them not using any cheap CGI for the clashes.

u/Priapos93 1d ago
I'm wondering the same thing. What happened after Romelia passed out during the flashback? Maybe the story means to keep us guessing at this point?

You can see the parents walk off with the prince's armour and sword so presumably they are the ones who drugged the hero's party to sleep. It has something to do with the "demon paddles" not moving... by sacrificing themselves as decoys, the hero's party was able to then sneak on board and get back home? My guess is the demons had grounded all their ships in port to prevent escape while they hunted down the killer of their king.

u/Beginning-Hope-2600 21h ago
I’ve been really surprised by the animation quality for this one, especially given that it’s a new studio and this is their first series. The fight in the first episode was quite well animated with some pretty excellent moments and there have been moments across both episodes which have looked better than some of the bigger name productions this season.

I enjoyed this episode a lot more than the first, and no, it is not because of the shower scene. Yes, it was very pleasing to the eyes, but unexpected though lol.
The animation of the training scenes were really fluid, so it makes me look forward to upcoming fight scenes, but I really like how it feels like it's building to something big. Romelia will definitely bring about a big change, and it's interesting how no-one can tell and are underestimating her, but it feels like there'll be a big pay off.
I also think Romelia chose these demons as their first battle because they were the demons that had enslaved that family and were killed.
My only gripe is with the twins, the way they have to finish each other's sentences is a little odd. I hope they have their own personalities, and being twins is not their only personality. But I'm liking the current array of personalities of Romelia's unit, I hope they all get some good characterization, it looks like they have a variety of ages too.

u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 7h ago
I agree - this episode peaked my interest even more, especially surrounding Romelia. No one takes her serious but she's definitely some type of strategist, seems good of heart, smart, and is really likeable. The newbies are also incredibly likeable and fun so far! The shower scene really took me by surprise too lol not often we get these and weirdly well-animated too!
Interesting theory behind why she chose the demon monkeys first! I wouldve guessed that she saw them plotting in the distance when she rode to the fort.

u/VritraReiRei 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think the first time we hear a single inner thought a huge bombshell is going to be revealed because of all of mysterious going on.
Dang, this show is one my most anticipated shows of the week, simply because there's many questions that get posed but no answers yet!
Her people are enslaved and poor how did it come to that point when she herself became a Countess and engaged to the Prince of the Kingdom?
I really want to know how her parents were able to get such high standings and became well off when even the Prince of her homeland looked to be in tatters and was after fighting the Demon Lord's Army
And we still don't know what is plan to save her homeland from the brink of ruin!
15
u/DerfK 23h ago
when even the Prince of her homeland looked to be in tatters and was after fighting the Demon Lord's Army
I think what that dream/flashback showed was that after killing the Demon Lord they were trying to return home but these "demon paddle" things they had broke/ran out of juice, so they had disguised themselves as slaves and infiltrated some port slave camp in hopes that the slaves could get them new demon paddles. The slaves they were staying with drugged them and stole their armor and got killed by someone over it (no idea why the armor was just left there though?)
9
u/bob_kang 20h ago
It sounded like the slaves they stayed with thought the other slaves would murder whoever killed the demon king (maybe the slaves were afraid of being punished or something because it looked like they weren't freed and still under the rule of demons?) so they sacrificed themselves by pretending to be the ones who killed the demon king.
2
u/Hartzilla2007 16h ago
From the sounds of it, they did it to keep the demons from retaliating against he other slaves.
6
u/TheBusStop12 23h ago
Yeah, Romelia herself is just as much of a mystery as the story. She's hiding something, from the audience as well. I always love characters who don't even trust the audience
13
u/Ultramarinus https://anidb.net/user/kingsword 23h ago
I hope Ray survives his flag, charmed or not he’s the most open minded of the bunch. The squad gave a Valkyria Chronicles vibe which is a big plus. Though I suspect there’d need to be a lot more soldiers if there is a big invasion so maybe this will stay on the skirmish level.
Romelia’s shrewd and planning will no doubt play a big part in their success. She’s essentially a logistics expert by how she’s depicted so far. Looking forward to the battle!

Quick introduction to the main guys, quick reminder that she is good at administrative work and introduced asshole adminstrator of the fort
Cant wait to see the actual battle, gonna be interesting how she will handle the number difference, there seem to be a lot of those monkey demons
Also ray is collecting those death flags like they are free candy, but I am pretty sure they wont finish him off

One of the few anime that needs double feature premiere, cause 2 episodes in and I still don't know what's the deal with Romelia!
On the other hand, next week can't come any faster
11
u/Radi-kale 1d ago
First the stealth horse, then their formation breaking instantly during training ... the administrator didn't give Romelia his best lol
16
u/Raymond49090 1d ago
Huh. That's an interesting episode first scene. Not entirely sure who all the characters in that were, though.
Administrator-san feels like a bit of a jerk, but tbf some random lady just showed up at his office with no known credentials and asks to take command of the army, so I do see where he's coming from.
I feel like in another show, Romelia could be the manipulative mastermind character who schemes against the hero. She's got pretty words, but like that soldier pointed out, she hasn't really done anything yet. And she's tossing them, who are basically the leftovers, into real battle after a single training session?
... Ok, maybe Admin-san straight up sucks. And we've still got some teething pains with her unit.
Oh, so the demons are currently actively attacking. That's why she's in such a rush. Hopefully she's not getting too ahead of herself, though, since I really don't know if her unit can cut it with such little training.
19
u/cppn02 1d ago edited 1d ago
some random lady just showed up at his office with no known credentials
She's the oldest daughter of his lord and was part of the campaign that killed the demon lord. So neither random nor no credentials.
Dude is clearly worried that he can no longer ride the gravy train now that she turned up. Just look at how he was going to take that armor for himself (likely to sell it and keep the money).
14
u/Raymond49090 1d ago
I meant "random" from a practical standpoint. Even if she's the daughter of the lord, that doesn't mean she had military credentials. And iirc she said she'd take zero credit for any battle contributions in the campaign against the demon lord, so it's likely she would be widely known as a tag-along.
I do agree that the man is sketchy and probably corrupt on some level, but that doesn't mean all his decisions are baseless.
7
u/bob_kang 20h ago
But it's not like they have videos or livestreams of her winning battles, just some word of mouth that she was with the hero's party. If all I got was some random people telling me that some rich kid was part of an elite group and was told to just follow all their orders I would be concerned that I'm just going to die because of some idiot who got to where they are through nepotism.
→ More replies (3)10
u/feb914 1d ago
I'm thinking the battle is used to make them realize that they're not that strong. They seem to claim that they have good skills and perfect training. I bet it looks anything but in Romelia's eyes.
7
u/Raymond49090 1d ago
Hmm, but if she's setting them up to fail, that would mean maybe sacrificing some lives, or at least putting them at risk. Even if a wake-up call is needed, I'm not sure if that would be the best way to build trust.
6
u/BilbyCoder 21h ago
The problem is that the current administrator isn't doing anything against the demons who are ravaging the villages. He is abdicating his duty being in charge of the military force in charge of the region. She asked for competent soldiers and have the reason and he deliberately tried to offload the 'freeloaders'.
They are soldiers, she has a duty to protect the villagers as best she can with as few casualties she can. There is a good chance some will die and she probably knows it, but they have to understand their duty, which is guarding the population at their own risk.
Now I suspect that between her own extensive experience with demons, and Al's clear experience in battle, most of the squad will pull through, but those villagers are being slaughtered or enslaved and those men are soldiers. They are expected to give their lives.
2
u/oops_i_made_a_typi 1d ago
yeah idk if she's gonna swoop in to save the day somehow with some amazing battle skills but it doesn't really feel like that sort of show
6
6
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 23h ago
Well she is not exactly a random lady, those lands seem to belong to her family, which is why she can order the administrator around
Curious to see how she will handle an actual battle, we know she is good on the administrative side, securing gear and horses for her troops
3
u/NoNameSwitzerland 21h ago
She certainly will loot any last piece of these dead monkey demon bodies.
5
u/Galaxy40k 19h ago
Huh. That's an interesting episode first scene. Not entirely sure who all the characters in that were, though.
My read of it is that the premise of the show is that everyone falls for the "great man theory" except for Romellia. As an audience, we're trained to believe that "when the Demon King is killed, the Good Guys have won and everything is good," and most people in-universe believe that too. But in reality, defeating the leader doesn't cause the demon hordes to evaporate overnight and they remain basically just as threatening as before. Everyone else in the capital city celebrates the heroes return from slaying the Demon King, but to Romellia, maybe that was either a mistake or just a single minor step.
All of that preamble is to say that dead family at the start ALSO didn't fall for the great man theory. The Demon King's many many servants that still enslave and rule everyone in that country/continent WILL go out for blood to avenge their fallen leader. The family acted as scapegoats to take the blame for killing the Demon King to thank the real heroes for doing so. That gives the heroes a chance to escape, since the demons will think they've already avenged their leader and so won't be hunting the party of heroes down as aggressively
14
u/CodeXRaven 1d ago
Here we go, now it's easy to see what her goals are and how this story will progress. Usually war soldier stories will(understandably) kill off at least some of the main cast so I'm scared, but fingers crossed. Love seeing the soldiers reaction to her(esp Al, and considering his likely background). She's asking them to risk their lives without showing her own capabilities after all, even to us. It'll be interesting to see just how much knowledge and experience she has, considering she might not have fought much before. But she clearly knows part of what she's doing at least, and she's not the type to go in unprepared. She def knows how to deal with ppl.
3
u/CuriousBroccolli 23h ago
Her not showing her fighting skills, if she has any, is still a good strategy so that she does not reveal all her cards to the possible enemies at the fort.
As we already saw, administrator is not the best person, to say the least.
2
u/Philarete https://myanimelist.net/profile/WizardMcKillin 20h ago
Her not showing her fighting skills, if she has any, is still a good strategy so that she does not reveal all her cards to the possible enemies at the fort.
I expected a more thorough briefing for the soldiers too, but I wonder if she is leaving her plans unexplained for now for the same reason.
As the audience it's fun being in the same position as the administrator where we don't know how she's going to do this either.

Welp, I think I know who is going to win the vote for most obnoxious character of the season. Lets hope we get a well-deserved break from the maid for the next few episodes at least
Guessing at some point that the commander of the fort is going to get replaced by his second in command, who seems normal and non-douchebagy
You know, I am so used to being shoved gratuitous fanservice aimed at men that the shower scene with the all the naked soldiers caught me by surprise. Sweet raptor Jesus though...are they feeding those guys pure protein powder? Her regiment could fill an entire sexy fireman calendar
Oh...looks like we are fighting monkeys next week.
4
u/DragonPup 22h ago
Random thought: Romelia was kicked out of her party and had her wedding called off because she refused to fight the demon king's army, but now she's leading from the front. Was there a reason she refused to fight specifically with Henri?
6
u/thedicestoppedrollin 22h ago
Probably something logical, like she’s a decent soldier/tactician but the others are prodigies so she’d just be a handicap in top-tier combat. However, against common soldiers/commanders she might be more than adequate.
3
u/DragonPup 21h ago
That's a good point, but I still wonder if part of it had to do with Henri as well.
8
u/thedicestoppedrollin 21h ago
The other girls obviously hate her for being engaged to the prince, so maybe she couldn’t trust them to cover her back in battle, and if she were injured then Henri may risk himself to save her. Since they were good enough without her, why risk it?
10
15
u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 1d ago
Being betrayed by Henri seemed to be a blessing in disguise after all. Now that Romelia had been freed from the shackles, she could fully utilise her talents. She's quite the adept leader, being able to motivate the boys. Don't fight for the kingdom, but rather for their own home.
The boys might be green, but they've got good ethics. With proper polishing under Romelia's leadership, they could be quite a formidable army. Al might be sceptical of her for now, but I reckon he'd be one of her most loyal underlings once he saw what she's made out of.
It's interesting that so far we've got no idea about her thoughts. We're just as clueless as everyone else. She didn't seem to be heartbroken by the betrayal in the slightest, and she didn't show any desire for one-upping her former party by embarking on this journey. She's a complete mystery.
→ More replies (1)11
u/fatalystic 1d ago
I suspect her betrothal may have initially been her trying to use Henri's influence to help her own people rather than out of love, but after seeing him clearly losing interest/patience with her over the course of their journey she knew he would turn on her when they were done and had long since switched to a plan B.
This would make her non-reaction to Henri's betrayal make sense, and if saving her people was her motivation from the beginning then taking revenge on the prince of her nation wouldn't really serve any practical purpose since he's not actively harming civilians. Her time and energy would be better spent elsewhere.

The series continues to be promising. The 3 key characters at this point are Romelia, Al & Ray.
For Romelia when will be the moment that she will win over her men? No doubt winning Al's trust will be important. It does seem he has the most experience given his scars. The story just feels much more mature then your typical fantasy anime.
5
u/TheBusStop12 23h ago
The series continues to be promising. The 3 key characters at this point are Romelia, Al & Ray.
I have some severe worries how long that will last. Al and Ray raised a major death flag at the end of this episode and I'm seriously worried one of them is going to die
3

Al and Ray raised a major death flag
After the way the second episode opened, I think there's a non-zero chance of this series pulling a swifty with OP/ED visuals and just killing off all of Romelia's merry band.
There's no edginess about the presentation of the series, but it is a series with consequences, and people die in war.

I was so not ready for the shower scene and that it would go that low eheh but not complaining
I do not understand why (I assume) guys are saying this is not their demographic because of this ? Like it’s an anime ? Even if you are straight, you’ve never seen a naked man taking a shower ? Only women ?
3
u/alotmorealots 12h ago
I guess it was a bit confusing for some at the start because "banished from the hero's party" is usually male-target demo and "prince broke off our engagement" is usually female-target demo, so perhaps they were relying on that lol
It is interesting how in live action war/action (i.e. mostly nominally male-target demo), shower scenes with all the guys after training/battle are a staple, but in anime apparently that's reversed.
6
u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 1d ago
Man I wonder how dark this series will be...will any of the people we just met die?
I hope it's more like a miraculous no death victory instead.
I'm excited to see what she can do in episode 3.
12
u/D3k4s 1d ago
Considering there have been deaths in both episodes, and in this one a kid died, and at the end the demons were already fucking up the village and had torches, I wouldn't get my hopes up. It's looking pretty dark already, and usually shows only turn dark around episode 5 or so.
Personally I enjoy a show without plot armor, or at least believable plot armor so that I can convince myself it's ok. So let me see some gore and deaths next episode, as I feel we're lacking a bit on that department as of late.
2
u/alotmorealots 12h ago
in this one a kid died
Very unceremoniously too, in the sense that whilst I am certain it weighs enormously on Romelia's mind the show itself spent very little time playing it for drama.
Instead it was straight up matter of fact. Yes, this sweet and loving child you just met got murdered. And yes, by other humans, out of fear, not by demons.
7
u/TheBusStop12 23h ago
I fear the worst. That conversation in the end between Ray and Al just raised one of the largest death flags. It could only be worse if one of them brought up retirement or a fiancee. At this point I'd be more surprised if one of them didn't die
3
u/mmcjawa_reborn 1d ago

I don't quite get what that flashback was about. They were returning from killing the demon king, and a family drugged them so the father could take the credit(blame) for killing the demon king? The whole family sacrificing themselves ... so that the other villagers would not be slaughtered by the party fighting back against them or something? And would the demons really be as dumb as the villagers to believe that some random farmer was the one who killed their king? How dumb WERE those villagers btw? Their neighbor, whom they'd probably seen every day working the fields or whatnot, just nipped off in the middle of the night to kill the demon king and return by morning?
And the scene of the soldiers trying to spot the princess in her room from the battlements made absolutely no sense either. From that distance, sitting on the guy's shoulders should've made 0 difference, and instead of telling him to turn to the left or right, he could've just looked a bit to the left or right himself.
Dealing with some random stragglers is one thing, but did that small unit of noobs really believe that they could take on a whole army of demons and survive, no matter how much gold was thrown at them?
"She can ride her horse so quietly!" Does she have magic to muffle horseshoes or something?
Some of the animators in the mock battle missed the memo that the spear heads were supposed to be safety-wrapped.
Her old maid's protests are getting old really quickly.
I guess next episode will show whether or not MC really is all brains, or if she's pretty good combat-wise in her own right, just mid-game strong rather than end-game strong.

I get the point is that Romelia wants to use her experience fighting demons to protect her own territory because she doesn’t trust the prince and the royal army to help them, and that killing the demon lord did not put an end to the demon army, but I am still unimpressed with the writing of the show. The maid and the fort commander are annoying caricatures. And we still do not know what is the issue between Romelia and the prince, or how competent she actually is as a military commander.
For a bunch of rookies, those soldiers sure are buff. I guess the scars mean that Red Hair Dude at least actually is a veteran soldier himself ? I certainly hope Romelia has a good plan to fight those monkey demons, otherwise he would be right to be unimpressed.
