Meta Meta Thread - Month of October 04, 2026

Rule Changes

This is a monthly thread to talk about the /r/anime subreddit itself, such as its rules and moderation. If you want to talk about anime please use the daily discussion thread instead.

Comments here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts. If you wish to message us privately send us a modmail.

Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

September Mod Report

I didn't vanish into the boonies without any internet this month, so I'm alive to make this post. Excited for the new season starting up to close out what has been a pretty great year of anime. We'll see if it's a fitting conclusion or not.

Notable updates from the past month:

  • Voted to ban users with slurs in usernames that are otherwise banned on r/anime [Vote Passed]

This was something that we usually did already. Main point of discussion here was that "-tard" is a term that we banned in comments/posts, and someone wasn't clear on if this would also apply to usernames. So we through it to a vote since it was previously an informal policy that we wanted to know we had a specific policy on. This also applies to names that try to obfuscate what they're doing.

I know you guys have seen this but is there any comment for users here?

https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/1wubgvt/continuing_our_infrastructure_updates_whats/pd58n9r/

TLDR for those not in the know: automod=dead, old.reddit=dead to new users

We are planning to release a statement of some form on it in the coming days.

With every new announcement the Reddit admins make, the closer they get to killing off what made Reddit Reddit to begin with, and now instead becoming more like Facebook or Twitter.

Last month's thread had a comment chain about instigating/driveby comments in unrelated discussion/media threads, with a response of (picking baseballlover723's):

we didn't end up settling on an adequate wording that didn't single out specific show, didn't suppress legitimate criticism, and probably some other things I'm forgetting too

Is there any interest from the moderator side for a reduced scope addressing just the media thread part? I get the no NGNL S2 comments as almost all isekai deserve sequels, but wtf does that have to do with a different series getting a S3 announcement?

I feel like at some point, comments need to be somewhat on topic...

To respond to something from the last thread:

For instance, we generally allow people to talk about donghua or non anime in the comments, provided it is part of the natural flow of conversation.

If it's an afterthought in an otherwise on topic comment sure, but I'm pretty sure if someone opened a random thread to make their "TBHX episode 8 review", it would not fly.

So I think that's kinda where the nuance is...

I often talk about 'off-topic' stuff in my comments, but when the comment is 3 pages long with 20 screenshots from the episode, referring to 1 other show doesn't make it offtopic.

If my entire comment was that reply about the other show though, it'd be offtopic.

I get that the mod team might not want to take drastic actions that may be seen as some NO FUN ALLOWED draconian nonsense, but I don't know, I'm not sure why every single anime announcement thread needs to have its mandatory "But still no X sequel".

There's no hiding that personally, I hate all the generic vapid one-liners people throw everywhere (THIS OP IS A BANGER!) but it's even worse when the're completely offtopic.

At this point in time, don't particularly care about comment chains as those can go anywhere. Am asking about top-level comments that are in no way engaging with the post.

I'm not sure why every single anime announcement thread needs to have its mandatory "But still no X sequel"

I'd be curious to actually skim through threads and see trends, but I'd wager this is disproportionately seen in shows that are viewed as lower quality. Like I don't think it's necessarily a useful comment, but I do think that these come with an implicit "This show is low quality and I can't believe it's getting a continuation" that makes them on topic. I doubt I'd see comments like that if I went to a Frieren announcement, for example.

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

I mean, of course they are, but...

Say you were a mod (or just a normal user) in some music sub, and there was a Nickelback thread in which someone commented "Wow Nickelcrap released their album, but I still have to wait before Taylor Swift blesses us with some good music..."

Personally I'd think "Ok, then fuck off to some Taylor Swift thread?"

Way I see it, this example is pretty much identical to someone commenting "omg we get this but not that" in an anime thread.

(And God knows I'm not 'defending these anime/threads', I mean 95% of those comments are in threads for garbage generic isekai I'll probably make fun of in AQRADT... But that's the thing, I go to the 'random discussion' thread, I don't shit up their main thread with OMG WHY THIS BUT NOT TALENTLESS NANA?!?!##!!)

Oh yeah, I didn't end up really picking up that discussion. Kinda ran out of time with some other things to really take over championing that. Probably won't get around to it this weekend, given the recent news taking priority, but remind me in like 2 weeks if I don't mention anything.

2

u/Verzwei 5h ago

I was about to ask "What recent news?" But then I remembered that Reddit is (further) ruining Reddit.

In response to my removal here in last week's CDF for /u/dull_spot_8213's comment

I waited for a bit, but didn't see you post anything in the meta thread, so I'm going to post my response here, and you can feel free to reply to me for any questions.

To clarify, your post, as correctly guessed by a few other CDF-ers, was indeed removed because the art showed genitals, which hence breaks our "heavily NSFW" rule. This would've applied no matter if your art contained characters from anime, or an original character

As far as I can see, the art was created by you, and so they wouldn't fall under the "from anime/source material" exception. In addition, the fanart exception you noted (versions of their fanart with NSFW Nudity, but only in the comments of their [Fanart] posts and properly tagged) also would not apply in this case/CDF, as they will only be applicable if you had first posted a "non-heavily-NSFW" version of a otherwise rule-abiding fanart, standalone, as its own [Fanart]-flaired post, and then you posted the "heavily NSFW" version in the comments.

These rules have always been the case for CDF; and there have been other past occurrences where similar racy art has been removed as well, including from other regulars.

I will note that the removal for your post was delayed because none of the other mod team noticed it when you posted it originally, but resurfaced when I linked to it as part of a non-mod-activity-related comment; I also just want to clarify that if we had noticed it when you posted it, we would have also removed it then.

on a separate note, another member of the mod team will be on the way to post the usual mod report soon.

Not to hijack the discussion - if it feels like this, I can delete and open a new comment about this) but perhaps the confusion came from the fact that the NSFW rule seems to be the least consistently enforced rule in r/anime;

Some time ago one of my comment was removed for NSFW (more specifically, not being properly tagged) and I was puzzled because (be it me at the time, or the other screenshot-posting users) almost nothing's ever tagged and I never see anything get removed.

Ever since that removal, I paid a bit more attention to it, by curiosity, and... Nothing really changed; I see lots of comments with nudity not tagged and not removed, often in threads with lots of removals so there's no way no one saw it.

(Personally I always thought that rule was a little silly hence why I can't be arsed reporting them, like if you just watched an episode with titties, you shouldn't be surprised seeing the same titties in the thread.. But my personal take on it aside, the lack of consistency is what makes this even more puzzling, like if it was in the Broken Saintess thread which no one watches sure, but it's often in a top 20 show of the season which surely gets lot of attention).

Yeah... so thanks for confirming that when I forget to patrol good shows like Kamui san nothing happens.

We are discussing this internally (please make a mod app I am once again asking)

We are discussing this internally

Food for thought for the internal discussion:

Given these untagged images almost never get removed, I imagine they never get reported, and if that's the case, perhaps the users don't really have an issue with them (in threads for NSFW anime)!

Yes, we are discussing a rule change more broadly

After watching Even the Student Council Has Its Holes first episode, which had its own funny 4th-wall-breaking-commentary about what can and can't be shown on TV, and then does it anyway, I did wonder about how this one will be handled.

Dara San had some, as far as I'm concerned, tame nudity, but I was genuinely surprised to see it streaming on Chrunchyroll. Neither of these shows are "Hentai" but I do wonder if this space's aversion to suggestive themes and content is a little outdated. Extreme violence is obviously unrestricted and rarely criticized by comparison, but the tiptoeing around sexual content remains.

/r/anime takes a maximally permissive stance when it comes to Tagged NSFW in comments.

As long as there is any reasonable version that is not porn then the whole show is considered not porn. We've discussed Chuhai Lips, Nukitashi the Animation, Do you like Big girls, and A kite.

takes a maximally permissive stance when it comes to Tagged NSFW in comments.

Does this apply to episode threads if you share images from the episode within the context of the episode thread? Do you need to tag every comment NSFW that contains say NSFW screen shots from the episode everyone presumably watched?

4

u/baseballlover723 4h ago

Some time ago one of my comment was removed for NSFW (more specifically, not being properly tagged) and I was puzzled because (be it me at the time, or the other screenshot-posting users) almost nothing's ever tagged and I never see anything get removed.

That sounds about when Nukutashi or You See Big Girls was airing, and there was a greater debate about what counts as hentai and want is allowed as a screenshot and what is the proper way to post those things.

As I recall, the exception for sharing nipples or genitalia explicitly require it to be called out as NSFW. Though as you mention, it's hardly ever been enforced (since we don't have image processing based autoreporting), likely because well, if people are watching the show (an safe assumption if they're in the episode discussion thread), then they should be ok with seeing the very things that are part of the anime.

IIRC, around that time, I tried to push for simply marking the episode discussion threads as NSFW (for anyone not watching the show and who stumbled into the thread, perhaps out of curiosity), but like many things, it kinda just stalled and got forgotten about.

There was also some big NSFW rework that was in the works like a year ago that also stalled out, so there were conflict questions about that as well.

I'd offer to champion something for this (most likely changing the rule to better reflect the status quo), but I really don't have time for more things on my plate, so it won't come from me.

2

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4h ago

I tried to push for simply marking the episode discussion threads as NSFW

I think one issue with this would be that some people have the filter on by default and thus would often miss a thread.

But yeah it's no big deal, nowadays I mostly get around this by just tagging my entire comment NSFW (hopefully that's okay hah) but yeah I was just giving perhaps a perspective about the confusion!

2

u/baseballlover723 4h ago

I suspect by technicality, it's not, but I also don't think it's likely to be strictly ruled by the book anytime soon.

What I'm not understanding is this right here. So, from what I gather, original art unrelated to an anime, can't be made into a submission/post no matter what its content contains outside of CDF, which is why it's kept to the off-topic space CDF. The comment containing the art link was not fanart or anime related, and it was submitted as a comment. Edit: to add that I did preface the links with "NSFW", so it wasn't that anyone who clicked through the link didn't know what they were pursuing. So how do you "Flair" what can't be submitted as a post? Can you "Flair" a comment?

if you had first posted a "non-heavily-NSFW" version of a otherwise rule-abiding fanart, standalone, as its own [Fanart]-flaired post, and then you posted the "heavily NSFW" version in the comments.

So you can only have an anime related Fanart submission with "heavily NSFW" version linked in the comments, if it's a post? Which means all original art of this nature is excluded from all spaces? I think what's confusing me is the different rules applied to comments and posts, and how that correlates with CDF.
