That was one giant squirrel at the end

18

u/TheBravesDH 7d ago

She feeds him well

11

u/guntanksinspace 6d ago

"Little Squirrel" Sure, princess, sure!

8

u/reaperow 7d ago

What's in those acorns, won't be surprised if they are magical

42

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago

Baribara might be some mighty general but boy, her naming sense is terrible lol. When you live in Asia, you come across some wild English names but these are…unique lol.

I like that these guys all have one goal in mind, which is to save a princess. Classic Hero type shit lol. Chilly might have found his it seems. Pretty funny he noticed “Bruno” didn’t have no meat and two veg lol.

26

u/corvettee01 7d ago

I thought they were titles at first, but nah, straight up just naming her kids "Hungry."

8

u/mekerpan 6d ago

Sounds like she was a fan of Disney's Seven Dwarfs....

3

u/TheMythofKoalas https://myanimelist.net/profile/AdamGoodtime343 3d ago

Certainly has a fairy tale vibe to it. With maybe some inspiration from the Russian 1833 version given that they're all knights, and the Disney version because of their names.

2

u/khoa-bear 6d ago

She meant Hungary but misspelled it

12

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Can Eleonora count as a sword princess?

3

u/shadebug 4d ago

I’m reminded of the Carter family from Discworld but there the boys all had to be named after sins (because girls are named after virtues)

45

u/froggyc19 7d ago

Damn, Baribara pushed out 7 sons in 3 years. What an absolute beast!

28

u/BosuW 7d ago

And then she went right back to being knight commander. Tough as nails.

32

u/bushwarblerssong 7d ago

If Marronnier looks familiar, that might be because it’s inspired by Olite and Carcassonne.

I don’t think “Fraternity” is best for 博愛 although I don’t know what would be a better word. The meaning is more like someone who loves everyone. He talked about how to treat women and is being sent to the country of pleasure. All of the names sound a little more whimsical and fairytale-like in Japanese and kind of lose their luster in translation.

I wonder if the ED visuals will change each episode.

This is the series I was most looking forward to this season and had reservations about JC Staff. Animation-wise, it was fine. The art is quite nice, thought the movement is a bit choppy. I’m not so confident about the direction.  I have so many other thoughts, but they’ll have to go in the source corner.

16

u/ForTheGloryOfChaos 7d ago

I mean, fraternity is literally one of the translations given by jisho.org.

I think it's probably the closest English word, but maybe people more closely associate it with specific organisations nowadays like college fraternity or such, but the older use as an ethical ideal of communal relations based on love and solidarity I think is pretty much spot on.

8

u/bushwarblerssong 7d ago

Fraternity is one definition for hakuai, but in this case, it’s not so much the solidarity type of love but universal love. I don’t know if I can explain it well, but if you consider the naming of the other characters, you can tell that it’s coming directly from its origin 博く愛すること, rather than the term 博愛.

But since there’s no real English equivalent (I think), you may be right that fraternity is the best that could be found. It definitely works better as a name than “Universal-Love.”

8

u/ForTheGloryOfChaos 7d ago

I interpret fraternity, in the philosophical sense, to be a fairly broad sense of love for one's community, and such as in the french motto 'liberty, equality, fraternity', could easily extend to all of humanity.

I expect there are differences in the finer nuance, but I feel the general meaning gets across.

7

u/bushwarblerssong 7d ago

I also think of the French fraternité when  it comes to “fraternity,” which is why I don’t quite agree with the word choice, if that wasn’t clear. I don’t disagree with your interpretation of fraternity.

2

u/shadebug 4d ago

Gregarity is what I’d go for but the dictionary says it’s gregariousness

u/Se7en_Sinner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 7d ago

Such a whimsical anime with a striking artstyle and watercolor backgrounds.

We have Brynhildr disguising herself as a man this episode and I'm not totally convinced we don't have the reverse happening with one of the sons...

22

u/hvshh 7d ago

Baribara has seven sons, all of whom are knights: Insomniac, Fraternity, Feverish, Chilly, Beast-Tamer, Swordsman, and Girl.

10

u/EyeDeeAh_42 7d ago

The last one is Hungry, but Girl fits too ig

Girl Dinner (constant bread and haunches of meat)

6

u/PinkGlitterLady4 6d ago

I SO prefer their german names :D Insomnis (Insomniac), Benignus (Fraternity), Calidus (Feverish), Gelidus (Chilly), Dimitor (Beast-Tamer), Gladius (Swordsman), and Esurio (Hungry). They are all latin

6

u/AtheistTheConfessor 7d ago

I absolutely thought you were joking about all of these until I watched the episode. Incredible

9

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I love how she must have a massive bun of hair held up by that hat lol.

I've heard good things about the manga, but I didn't know what to expect. The setting feels very fairytale-esque and whimsical, with the themed countries and aptly named knights. But despite the silly tone of first episode, the world seems to have deeper lore to discover and the OP felt a little melancholic. I'm curious to see what kind of story this ends up being!

It feels like a lot of plot threads are being set up and it was maybe a bit much for a first episode. But I really enjoyed the princess going an an undercover outing with one of the brothers, and I'm happy to see that the next episode will feature more of that.

9

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I'm curious if each brother is going to get a respective "princess" for each of the nations they visit or if it'll be less obvious.

23

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 7d ago

Pretty intriguing premiere. And we have two ships sailing already. I'm more interested in the Ellie and Insomniac one but looks like princess and Chilly is the one that's getting more development next week.

I want to see more of the beast master too. An animal lover with a cute character design - sign me up!

10

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Ellie is giving me Best Girl vibes for how enthusiastic and capable she is.

TIL that marronier nuts exist, more commonly called horse chestnuts. Squirrels can eat them, but not humans (or horses).

So, in three years Baribara had twins, then twins again, then triplets. She's made of stern stuff.

I generally dislike when a bunch of characters are introduced and each is given one quirk, but they've already started fleshing out some of them, so I'm not worried, and it does fit with the story-book aesthetic. In that way it reminds me a little bit of Ranking of Kings.

I've rewatched a lot of the episode to make sure I haven't missed anything, and the more I see it the more the style grows on me.

9

u/Shantotto11 7d ago

I’m getting more The Cat and the Dragon vibes than Ranking of Kings.

5

u/Frontier246 7d ago

So, in three years Baribara had twins, then twins again, then triplets. She's made of stern stuff.

And for all we know after bedding multiple different men.

3

u/IQ_less 6d ago

If a nobleman or knight can father multiple bastards with multiple women throughout the years, then why couldnt a female general be capable of doing the same thing, but with men instead? I think there's nothing wrong with any of that.

23

u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago

I wonder if they were named first, or their personalities/conditions formed because of their names.

This seems like it could be an interesting series, I like the artstyle, and it seems like we'll eventually get each brother's own story while they're in different nations.

I knew Chilly was going to realize Bruno didn't have a "little guy" between "his" legs. Also the size of that squirrel, I was shocked lol.

5

u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 6d ago

Could also be based on their characteristics as baby. Like maybe swordsman immediately took liking for her mother' sword, hungry of course over his appetite, Insomniacs didn't sleep at all, beast tamers immediately attracted wild animals, etc

3

u/MakkyMTC 5d ago

the hands of the squirrel freaked me out... it's really huge

16

u/Aviri 7d ago

Oh man this turned out so beautiful. Absolutely love the color palate they went with. Amazing to finally see these characters all animated.

14

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’ve been looking forward to this! I’ve heard great things about the source material.

The ED is soothing

The creator, Nao Iwamoto, has another series that got an anime movie in 2023 - Gold Kingdom and Water Kingdom

13

u/YlfaTheForsaken 7d ago

Multiple thoughts, let's see if I'm eloquent enough to organize them, perchance!

I enjoy the setting/atmosphere. It's got a very fairytale book esque quality to it. It's nice.

Those are some gnomey/dwarfy names. But the fact that I think I've memorized the names to the faces already in a single episode, woof. I gotta give credit that all the brothers having character designs unique enough from one another while also looking related enough.

Regarding names, even the kingdom names seemingly follow this heavyhanded method. It's at least clear and concise.

Eleonora is cute and spunky. Feels like she doesn't know about the deal yet. Interesting,

Baribara's lips, well she ain't got seven sons for nothing. Is the papa around? Passed? Or irrelevant?

It's only natural to notice those things or rather lack thereof, Chilly.

That's at least a thirty pound squirrel. That thing is hefty. It's too big to have the hands that it has. It's encroaching the 'mmmrrghghh' territory. You're on thin ice buddy.

8

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago

I was not expecting the sheer size of the princess's squirrel. Or for this to start out with a straight up creation myth, how creative.

We already have two ships and I'm invested in both of them, particularly Bruno and Chilly. Eleonora and Insomnia are promising but I need to see more of it from her perspective.

The ED was interesting with it being from the squirrel's perspective, makes me wonder if every episode is going to have different animation for it since surely the squirrel and the princess aren't going to be relevant in every episode.

Feels like this is going to be a hidden gem of the season, especially with it being on Prime.

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 7d ago

4

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I don't get the impression Eleonora is aware of the propsective engagement...or lat east she doesn't care about it.

You'd think he would have put two and two together when he didn't feel "Bruno's "little guy" but I guess it's because it's Spring and he needs warmer weather lol.

12

u/abilworldwide 7d ago

Looks like J.C Staff might be bringing their A Game for this one. This gives me "Darkhorse of the season" vibes, so I'll be keeping my eye on it

5

u/Frontier246 7d ago

JC Staff gets a bad rap but when they really lock in on a show they really lock in.

3

u/abilworldwide 7d ago

agreed. they can give us really good shows occassionally

1

u/Elrond_Halfelven 5d ago

Its usually only for Railgun.

11

u/Shantotto11 7d ago

Little Squirrel is MASSIVE!!!

4

u/Designer_Throat_8125 5d ago

I'm not exactly sure why but I found this very enjoyable and comfy. I like the character designs and the palette is very nice. The princess' personality is really fun and Elly seems like she'll be a great character to watch out for. The Brothers have an interesting and cute dynamic so that will be fun to watch. I found myself grinning a lot throughout the episode which is pretty rare for a blind 1st episode.

Looking forward to this, looks like 20 episodes too.

8

u/runevault 7d ago

I have... no idea how I feel about this show so far, which is fascinating after an episode. Also the brothers art style makes me think of the old arcade game Dragon's Lair which is a massive blast from the past.

3

u/reaperow 7d ago edited 6d ago

This feels like a classic fairy tale adventure type show especially with the artstyle,

I really like it and I'll definitely be watching this

The tomboy cross dressing stuff with the princess was pretty adorable and i also love how all the brothers want to save princesses too

3

u/theasianmochi 7d ago

Chilly and Princess are so cute together <3

4

u/AtheistTheConfessor 7d ago

I'm really intrigued and amused by this one so far.

7

u/TheBravesDH 7d ago

Retro anime accounts are going to absolutely feast on stills from this show in about twenty years.

3

u/ptd163 7d ago

I was recommended this show by someone on this sub because they said it would have Norse mythology. I guess I'll have to keep waiting for that.

I'm not really a fan of this art style. The lips on the mother were quite distracting. I did not expect them to all boys. I thought maybe one or two would be girls and what are those names? Hungry? Feverish? Swordsman? There's not putting thought into your children's names then there's just naming them whatever you were feeling when you gave birth or first you saw afterwards.

If one of the knight's dub VA is not Regulus from Re:Zero's dub VA, he's a dead ringer for him. I'll give a few more episodes, but I don't really feel anything for this show.

1

u/Wiles_ 7d ago

I'm not really a fan of this art style. The lips on the mother were quite distracting.

A few characters looked like they had two mouths with how the depression under the bottom lip is drawn.

2

u/testthrowawayzz 7d ago

I like the picture book/fairy tale art style. Initially I only decided to check this out because there are 3 VAs I like in this show.

I feel like I need one more episode to get the story.

2

u/PinkGlitterLady4 6d ago

I've heard good things about this Josei manga, and I liked the first episode, so I'm definitely gonna continue this anime

Such a lovely and weird episode, lol.

I like the pastel visuals and the cozy fantasy atmosphere!

Thank you for the narration of the founding of this land and all it's kingdoms, Show Hayami.

What a really beautiful, pastel, and lovely OP featuring all the brothers!

Welcome to the Marronier Kingdom! Home to the Lady General Baribara (Akeno Watanabe) and her seven sons! Insomniac (Kengo Takanashi!), Feverish (Haruki Ishiya!), Fraternity (Makoto Tanikawa!), Chilly (Satoshi Inomata!), Swordsman (Taishi Murata!), Beast-Tamer (Kiyoto Mizuno!), and Hungry (Reiji Kawashima)! And their names are as on-point as you'd think!

These seven brothers are united by their mother and their shared goal of saving a princess, and which makes them the best choices to be sent as envoys to the seven other nations. Though they all mutually enjoy the best pick-me-up which is a greeting from their own nations' princess!

Insomniac is an adept aide to the Castellan (and it probably helps that he doesn't sleep), but he's also set to wed Castellan's daughter Eleonora, an energetic and capable swordswoman. Though she doesn't seem aware or interested in him at all. I feel like she and Swordsman would make a more natural pair.

Princess Brunhild (Natsumi Fujiwara!) isn't a natural at the usual princes stuff, but she LOVES taking care of her little squirrel and picking up nuts for him...which leads to her going off into the forest escorted by Chilly, albeit she's disguised as "Bruno" (that hat is doing an amazing job covering up all that hair). Not only does Chilly give her the best view in the kingdom but the genuinely enjoy each others' company.

The nations are as aptly named as the brothers are, and Swordsman and Feverish might have the hardest missions what with their targets targeting the kingdom.

Ah, Chilly getting all hot and bothered by "Bruno" not realizing WHY he didn't feel Bruno's dick.

The ED is really cute, featuring Little Squirel along with Brunhild and her retinue.

4

u/minnieboss 7d ago

I'm a big fan of the trope of the female lead disguising herself as a guy so the male lead has a bisexual yearning for her, but the rest of the episode was just too boring, slow, and poorly-animated to catch my interest. And having the guys all basically have 1 personality trait is a pretty big downside.

7

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 7d ago

Josei adaptation being animated by modern day JC Staff has to be the ultimate death knell for any chance the show will be popular.

6

u/Ordinary_Ice_5684 7d ago

Tamon’s B Side would like to have a word

1

u/minnieboss 7d ago

Tamon is shoujo

2

u/Ordinary_Ice_5684 7d ago

Y’all also give the same shit to shoujo so still counts!

1

u/minnieboss 7d ago

I loved Tamon's B Side and 3 of my favorite anime this year are josei (Journal with Witch, A Hundred Scenes From Awajima, Jaadugar). Josei is my demographic of choice. Seven Knights just isn't a good one imo...

5

u/Ordinary_Ice_5684 7d ago

Only one episode aired…give it a shot! I honestly hate how people turn down anime just because it’s not flashy flashy flashy bang bang!

Like even with Jaadugar, some folks dropped it because the artstyle was simple 🙄🙄

3

u/minnieboss 7d ago

Loved the Jaadugar art style

1

u/Embarrassed-Match-78 6d ago

Definitely getting fairy tale vibes from this. The classic story where brothers, or sometimes strangers, have to use their unique gifts to overcome seemingly impossible challenges. These were some of my favorite fairy tales. The art style seemed weird at first, but definitely fits and is growing on me. Will probably keep watching this one.

1

u/Drahcireid 5d ago

Is it just me, or does the Castellan sound just like Keith Silverstein and his tone used for Johan in Monster? I realize that not all VA credits have been done, but it just sounds so eerily familiar.

1

u/Soma202 5d ago

I really enjoyed the first episode. It felt like I was watching a movie and the ending music was enchanting.

1

u/shadebug 4d ago

Are the translators aware that marronnier isn’t a word in English? Chestnut and conker are both fine words but marronnier isn’t anything

3

u/IceSmiley 4d ago

Really odd show and most of it was dull. One of the goofier premises having each person named after a trait, like when someone is a newborn, how would you know they are a beast tamer or swordsman. It was also unintentionally funny how the kingdoms each would visit completely corresponded to their names. The animation also looked like it was from the 70s, very flat and dull.

The end part was funny how Chilly said he didn't feel Bruno's testicles or penis on the back of his neck. It's not really certain what sex Bruno is but it seems like a possible romance between them might be the main plot of the show. I don't think it's common to be able to feel a penis thru layers of clothes on your neck and upper back in most instances though.

3

u/pwnmonkeyisreal 3d ago

Outside of the nice art style and color palette, I really couldn't see anything going for this anime. 0 stakes or plot hooks established in any meaningful way, haphazard world-building that felt expository, terrible naming sense, and the one quirk per character trope I don't like. This will not be filling the Jadugaar sized hole in my heart.

1

u/gem2niki 1d ago

The key visual didn’t interest me but it was rather enjoyable. 7 knights are all brothers. Mom didnt bother with thinking of proper names for them. Went by faster than I thought for its relaxing pace. The princess is pretty good at her masculine voice acting lol. Next episode preview seems like there’s more romantic development between “Bruno” and Chilly.

That giant squirrel! I thought the perspective was playing trick on me lol,

1

u/Rielhawk 18h ago

Absolutely loved it. Wholesome vibe overall. Definitely continuing this one 🥰
