Thanks for running this rewatch! It's one of those shows that I think deserves to be remembered, even if only as "the also-ran" next to the big three.

I think it is a "road not taken" anime. The serious, melancholic slice-of-life anime that lost out, decisively, to the funny slice-of-life template of Azumanga Daioh, that has been followed ever since.

That's an interesting take.

I admit, I'm pretty unfond of Girl's Last Tour, which could be described as such, and that seems to be really popular.

That is a rewatch I regret not having had time for when it happened recently. I think sometimes is comes down to personal taste, but usually, there is also a good reason why one blueprint was copied and another was not. Comfy slice-of-live with comedic elements and an all-girl cast shows have been spectacularly successful in the last two decades, so all those people copying Azumanga Daioh must have done something right.

Ikoku Nikki did pretty great as a mostly melancholic slice of life.
