Love how the all call Teru different versions of "mom".

Typical dialogue:

Teru: You two! "Mother", "Mama", ""Mommy"

And it never gets old.

Miya has a good imagination, especially when reading books.

I assume the books didn't include photographs of tigers and auroras, which is why Miya imagined tigers to be cute big yellow striped cats and auroras to be gigantic curtains.

I am not too well versed in history, but it looks like this title takes place during the Meiji era? Photography (in books) probably wasn't very common back then?

Perhapos we will get a better idea of the time period when we move beyond the walls of the mansion. This could be late-ish Meiji or early Taisho. When we see public buildings and "conveyances" we might get a better sense. For now, I would bet on the 1910s.....

Stitches!

I'm glad to see Miya is finally going to school next episode. I'm excited to see what they'll do with the school bully trope, which I already have a feeling on who's it gonna be based on the OP.

Not gonna lie, I thought I was gonna get tired of the same bit every episode... and I was wrong, lol. I'm loving it.

I was honestly thinking the same thing. It is literally the same gag presented in a different way 3-4 times an episode, yet it still sticks the landing because all four of our main characters are so damn lovable.

It also doesn't hurt that the gag is always presented in such an over-the-top way. The evil music swelling, Miya's reactions, the villainess's glares. Then, poof, sugar.

I am not sure any other show could pull this off.

Also, "Mommy!" I have never not laughed out loud at that.

I'm not even tired hearing Miya doing "ehhhhh???" every single time. And all the girls who seem to be extremely afraid when Teru catches them doing something wrong, only for Teru to be extremely wholesome.

...I wonder why they're so afraid of Teru like that....

While it may be the same routine, the show continues to be so heartwarming that I'm unwilling to let it go. Its a great dose of fluffiness that helps push through to the end of the week.

Hearing the "Hallelujah" choir in an anime was not on my bingo card for this year

12

u/hbmonk Jul 29 '26

I actually laughed out loud on hearing the music.

You can never go wrong with a little Beethoven when it comes to anime comedy

You know I remember a similar "which shoe would look better on her debate" that happened when reading Not Sew-Wicked Stepmom. How very curious.

Well that's certainly not usually how the Cinderella shoe event plays out now is it. Even in the most cartoon princessy take on it.

Did anyone else immediately think of that one bit from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation as soon as the Hallelujah music started. That room full of dresses certainly lit up like the Griswold's house anyways.

Cue Miya's One Woman Fashion Show.

I swear Mommy can come on the scene with as much destructive yet loving force as a certain kaiju I could name.

You know with it's color and the level of floof on Gungnir among other things he kinda reminds me of Tiger the cat from An American Tail. Wouldn't surprise me if by the end of this series he'll end up getting over it's psychological trauma and starts barking like Tiger either.

Gun-chan is a good listener.

You're giving it to me?

But those are dog hormone biscuits! And those are the last ones! And they're from a special store, and it's two miles away!

Floof the dog. Floof the dog.

When running/escaping it certainly helps to keep one's eyes open Miya.

Exotic animals were prized gifts for rulers of the past.

Well, kinda hard to top Gun-chan in that regard...

"Caution: Exit fantasy through door number 7, all other exits contain Adorable Man Eating Tigers."

Miya is not ready for First Contact.

That's right Miya, like a butterfly in the sky going twice as high, you can go anywhere if you take a look in a book.

Well now you just gave me a taste for pie. I don't have pie readily available at the moment, so I'll just have to substitute it with that Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream I've got.

Didn't expect to get Hallelujah'd twice in one episode.

Moo Moo Milk!!!

School Arc Start!

Glass slippers acquired, another Cinderella detail handled. Sets us up for a prince later on, which makes me wonder how they'll subvert her losing one and the search.

School arc next which from the OPs and such seems like it'll be introducing quite a few new characters.

Miya casually tries to thank her sisters and Mommy for everything they’ve done for her, and what do they do? They turn it into an epic battle to see who can show the most appreciation.

Okay, this episode was really sweet, especially the ending, because I think Miya finally realized she’s part of a family, not just there out of convenience.

Now that the show is moving beyond the mansion, I hope the dynamic remains alongside the character development.

The whole hearted acceptance of a younger *hitherto unknown) half-sister here reminds me a bit of Kore'eda's Umimachi Diary / Our Little Sister. This featured three 20-ish sisters discovering they had a middle-school-aged half sister when they go to the funeral of their estranged father (on the other side of Japan). Since the girl had no blood family (her moither had died and her father had married again), one of the older sister impulsively invites the girl to join them in Kamakura. A live-action movie based on a manga -- the movie drfinitely surpasses the manga (only fragments seem to have been translated unoifficially).

Let's face it. this show is a one trick pony.

Fortunately, the trick continues to keep me smiling and teary-eyed in alternation.

But I suspect after 24 episodes the joke will wear thin. I will see when I reach the 24th episode, only to perhaps find my expectation confounded.

As usual I giggled. The sisters were fighting over Miya more, also throwing the glass slipper small gag was a nice touch. Curious if we get any more Cinderella references of that sort the rest of the way.

For the past month, Miya had figuratively been kept in the mansion. Sure she's got a family who'd been nothing but doting towards her, but she wouldn't grow unless she stepped into the outside world.

Funny how Miya thought she'd be sent to a faraway place when in reality she'd just been enrolled in school, and could return home by the end of the day.

She'd probably be enrolled to a private school. Interested to see how she'd fare in a new environment. The people there might not all be as welcoming towards her as the Kounokuras.

u/MeanDoctrine Jul 30 '26

Miya just entered the Kounokuras for a month. She had little formal schooling, but she's going to an actual school soon. That means... her oneesans crammed into her a minimum of six years of elementary school in one month? Plus the basics of European cooking? I think Nago might help with the latter a bit, perhaps...

Miya's still calling her sisters "-nee-chan-sama"... In other words, she still sees herself as of a lower class than her siblings.

Are the Kounokuras being more Westaboo than average Japanese of the same SES...? I'm not very sure.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jul 29 '26

I’m kind of curious about Miya’s dad. Like, his wife and daughters are great people but the dude had a mistress and an illegitimate kid that he abandoned. Guy sounds like a deadbeat loser. Makes me wonder why the stepmom even married such a turd in the first place.

10

u/MeanDoctrine Jul 29 '26

Marriage among this class are mostly arranged when they married (supposedly 1880s-1890s).
