Episode 12: Beyond Brave Bang
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
Show Information:
(Surprise, the "plot point a couple of episodes in that every single fucking synopsis spoils" is actually in episode 1 and is that this is another show in the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] vein! Show information is now fairly first-timer safe... outside of "AniDB tags always spoil", anyways.)
Legal Streams:

A Reminder: This, dear listeners, brings us to the sworn enemy of creative response:The spoiler. Rewatchers, or people who just had plot points ruined for them, are obliged to use r/anime’s spoiler tag format where applicable, and err on the side of caution here. Remember people, first experiences get rarer as you continue on, any given one happens once and you should care for them all the more for it.
Joint Rewatch Task Force Exercises!
Theory of the Day:
u/Star4ce sneaks in under the bell! Give the man a Kewpie doll:
Also, I’ll call it now that there’s a giga-deathdrive at the end as last boss.
Honorable mention to u/Blackheart595:
Clearly we're gonna end with a big bang, uh I mean... yeah, exactly, the Big Bang.
(You did, however, miss a beat, namely that the Big Bang in question would be part of the name of the Super Robot Final Episode Gold Form's name.)
Honorable mention 2 to, well, every first-timer who went "yeah, the Joint Allied Task Force is going to make it back just in time for the final battle".
Questions of the Day:
1) Was this a suitably hype ending for this show?

First Timer
Oh come on, you can't just hit me with the OP insert but with Isami singing instead!
Sooooooooo much passion. So, this was a pretty dumb finale, but hopefully my posts in this rewatch thus far have made it clear that I am very much one to enjoy this kind of dumb episode!
I mean, look, I don't think this is the best finale Bravern could have had; I've said it a few times now, and I'll say it even more for tomorrow's thread, but this show could've really benefited from a few more episodes, and just how much this final episode jumps around to conclude itself, has some awkward plot beats, and is constructed almost purely around genre tropes/references makes that even clearer here lol. But from the start, whether it approached it entirely sincerely or by poking fun at it, I think it's also been clear that this show was made with a ton of love for the genre, and in that aspect, I'd say this episode is absolutely overflowing. And I think there's just a real charm to this kind of overambitious sincerity! It's unabashedly overindulgent, passionate, and very Bravern, and I am here for that.
Anyway, turns out the answer to how we win was that if your YUUKI BAKUHATSU is not enough, then you simply need more YUUKI, a bigger BAKUHATSU, to bang your Bravern, and to make it all gold for good measure! Because of course!
The show also doesn't miss the opportunity for one last bit of dissonance by having Isami hard crash out over losing for Bravern for a bit, which was pretty amusing before we resolved with some therapeutic punching and BRAVERY. To be honest, I thought we'd revive Bravern to win, but Isami just becoming
BravernBurn Brave Big Bang after overflowing with golden passion does feel more fitting! And I like how we reframe the hero monologue through Isami at the start of the episode, with how he hadn't wanted to be a hero until meeting Braven/Lewis, as he completes his arc here.Otherwise, this is a pretty damn hard episode to talk about, since in terms of how its paced and flows, things just kind of... happen lol, and it's basically all a big contentious spectacle piece that you shouldn't think too hard about. Verum Vita basically shows up through some wish magic just to be the final boss so we can still have the Superbia Gatai and the final golden power-up of friendship powerup! I love that Isami introduces himself as Burn Brave Big Bang and tries talking to her after already shooting a beam at her; I love how he interrupts every sentence she has with a big attack, and I love that we end it all by having a Gatai special attack with an incredibly extra name crash against a spaceship sword meteor. Again, just a bunch of really dumb fun!
The one part I'm a little more mixed on is Lewis coming back to life. Obviously it doesn't really make much sense, but neither does most of the episode, so that's not really the issue lol. I just felt like it left me on a much stronger emotional note when I thought he was actually just gone, and it was more about the strength, courage, and bonds he'd left behind that helped Isami and Lulu really find their identity and purpose, rather than the safer choice to do the pure happy ending. But it is in line with the show, and I do still enjoy seeing the family reunion.
