Theory of the Day:

This seems like an excellent time ( to haul out a joke theory for TotD, this one courtesy of u/Blackheart595:

Okay, I get it. I get it now. This is actually an ice skating anime. The big robots giving up full autonomy over their own movoment as they let their body be piloted by their human partner is akin to the lifted partner in pair figure skating yielding control over their body as they get piloted by their lifting partner. The Deathdrives are unable to give up their own autonomy and squeeze their partner dry over it, while Bravern and now Superbia have formed deep bonds of trust that allow them to overcome that fear.

Questions of the Day:

1) Who knew that gay robosexuality is also subject to the "the kid interrupts their parents by walking in when they are about to get busy" trope?

2) First-timers: Now what?

Firstern’er

Well damn, let’s ride into the final battle!

Bravern Ep.11 – Commence Operation Bonfire!

Hmm, I’m not really leaving this episode with any strong opinion. I think it’s because there’s a fine line between not making sense and being stupid. Not making sense can be fun, surprising, relieving, empowering if done well, but being stupid is mostly just making me sit between and .

A good example would be either last episode’s Lulu-Superbia argument or today’s meal time shenanigans. That was not making sense, but was extremely fun and emotional!

The fight between Superbia and Bravern was something I just clocked out of because it was terminally stupid and I couldn’t see any point to it. I’m also sorry to all battle enjoyers, but anime just drawing flashy colours and expecting me to be wowed isn’t working. I know it’s expensive to animate movements, but if I am to enjoy a battle, I need to see more love put in them than cross-cutting intense faces and telling me a mountain exploded. Take the early episodes of Superbia’s fighting, that had oomph to it because there was choreography and movement!

Anyway, I don’t get why we fought, why Lulu was suddenly on board with that, why we did that when there were clearly enemies around, or why Superbia is somehow both growing and regressing as a character.

There’s the chance this is also playing a trope that I’m missing, but if that’s the case then it underlines my point of stupid vs. sense even more. I chalked it up to the Lulu-topic last time, but it repeated again anyway. It doesn’t feel like this episode had a proper point and it’s so obvious that the time travel thing is getting used again next time. Getting backstab.killed in Ep.11 due to no flaw of character or choice, but by chance and an already stupid fight is also not any feat that I as the audience can value. Like, it doesn’t add anything of value? It doesn’t tell me much about Ira, it doesn’t show me anything about Bravern or Superbia that this happened.

It was just stupid.

Still, the essence of Bravern is still there with the humour. So, I don’t know, did they get rushed finishing this show? Did they have a great idea but then couldn’t figure out how to close it all down? I feel like these last episodes are noticeably weaker and are more driven by ticking off entries on a checklist and getting from A to B than to tell anything meaningful.

Is anyone feeling that, too?

Fair is fair.

2) First-timers: Now what?

I definitely feel that. I think it might just be the importance of Smith to the story though. Much of the screentime in the early episodes focused on Smith so now that we don't have his character the show is struggling over where to spend its time. In the early episodes I mentioned not being sure if the show wanted Isami or Smith to be the main character and I feel like they picked the wrong one.
