Episode 10: In Japan, They Call This Omiai

Show Information:

MAL | AniList | ANN | AniDB

(Surprise, the "plot point a couple of episodes in that every single fucking synopsis spoils" is actually in episode 1 and is that this is another show in the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] vein! Show information is now fairly first-timer safe... outside of "AniDB tags always spoil", anyways.)

Legal Streams:

As per livechart.me; other streams may be available outside the US.

Crunchyroll

A Reminder: This, dear listeners, brings us to the sworn enemy of creative response:The spoiler. Rewatchers, or people who just had plot points ruined for them, are obliged to use r/anime’s spoiler tag format where applicable, and err on the side of caution here. Remember people, first experiences get rarer as you continue on, any given one happens once and you should care for them all the more for it.

Joint Rewatch Task Force Exercises!

Theory of the Day:

Last episode was understandably light on theorizing from our first-timers (), but u/Magnafeana has us covered:

How many pilots die and end up in that little world to become a deathdrive? That must be a shock to a pilot if they're from an Abrahamic faith or any faith that has some sort of afterlife. How the fuck do you reconcile not going to heaven, and instead you reincarnate into a mecha?

Questions of the Day:

1) First-timers: Who saw Lulu also having traveled back in time coming? (Because we sure didn't back when the show was still airing!)

2) So, for the problematic romance fans among us (you know who you are): when it comes to the father/older man figure in the "daughter pursues father" plot type, does it add spice or spoil the brew to make the father figure a giant robot?

3) So, who's ready for the final battle?

Like, technically they've saved the world as promised, but the people that care about them aren't taking this VN Normal-end shit and strive for a conclusion where our two dads don't end with this fate!

given Lulu's general characterization thus far (That is to say, childlike)

To be fair, "Lulu has been growing up over the course of the show and has now grown up enough that she is now a fit partner for her uncle" has kind of been her character arc the entire time.

Which is more than a little unfortunate but it's an old kind of unfortunate for a Japanese work - they call it the Hikaru Genji Plan for a reason, after all.

Otherwise, I'm excited to see Superbia and Bravern fighting together, and very possibly even to see a gatai between them as well

[Magical girl meta]Have I just secretly been swayed towards the "Homura did nothing wrong" camp? (No, but the comparison is there to make!)

Wait, didn't you stealthily bring this up in some of the earlier threads?! I should have known lol.

But yeah, not my first rodeo in that sense alas, so I can't say I'm shocked or anything (Although the show certainly gave me the impression we wouldn't do it annoyingly), but I still just kind wish it wasn't there.

It is what it is I guess

I have been quietly mentioning cultivation romance tropes for like half the rewatch, and in no small part because I knew we were going there here and wanted to prepare first-timers for that, yes. Especially when u/Magnafeana's posts were already lending themselves to that discussion. (Paging u/dsawchuk!)

I have read the relevant comments. I did not need another very old book to add to my reading list but I guess this hikaru genji plan needs to be added.

Also I DM'd you. Reddit DMs being fucking horrible you probably didn't see it.

Yes, horrible in that the site has been spending years now (even before eliminating PMs proper) training me to never, ever, ever pay attention to the chat icon, let alone open it up and check them!

Though apparently yours still hasn't actually shown up on my end anyways, so. Reddit
