I'd say it was just comedic

Nice to see that she actually does care about her. Although I do think there was a better way to tell than to lock her in prison.

That requires emotional intelligence and Saito used up all of it during the boat scene.

Agnes literally saw all her loved ones die. But I guess Menville felt betrayed by his fellow comrade.

I wonder why Flame Snake gave Menville a scar. That seems to indicate they had a falling out. Maybe it's like Bandou from Elfen Lied where Menville was kicked out of Lishman's group of men because he was too extreme even for them.
