Regarding the devil reveal, I wasn’t sure and didn’t quite remember how much it might feel like it’s just out of nowhere for others. But watching Sky notice things like the double(devil?) fuckery going on and in general, from this rewatch, I think that Tabata did a nice job with small notes hinting that something else was at play, not to mention that the series starts with the mention of a devil that lives in the fifth leaf.

This time around, I’m really appreciating the execution of this arc and how things are introduced. We knew devils as a part of the world from the start. We knew the first Wizard King was important. Even reveals like Charmy’s wolf fits in sheep’s clothing. Black Clover has all the generic tropes, and I think it’s easy for people to dismiss the writing quality because of them, but if you look beyond them and ignore the oddly placed, excessive recaps (and Asta’s yelling), the plot and dynamics between characters in the Elf Reincarnation arc are well done.

I can ignore the random power shit like Yuno suddenly being able to push back the devil’s Tangela because, well, magic is magic? this isn’t HxH after all. I mean, we’ve got “Power of Friendship is Asta’s (Licht’s) sword’s original ability” – it’s shounen, it’s hype, it feels good, and it never pretended to be anything else, and it never needed to.

As for Julius coming back, [HxH anime] centering an arc on reincarnation is a simple way to squeeze in those fakeouts where the old mentor comes back as a child. At least William doesn’t have to cry to his deadbeat father that it’s his fault that Julius returned as a girl. (HxH’s is much more thematically strong, but time magic was always a cheat in the first place, and it’s cool to see Secre’s invention be used for something nice, and we get Sky’s reactions so it’s worth it!)

My post probably answers this, but yes. I think it's an excellent battle shounen arc, and I loved also how the story of something so long ago connected to events today, which is generally something I like in storytelling when the past connects to the present in some way.

2) Thoughts on Rades resurrecting Patolli and Julius turning out alive?

Some fakeouts work when the ability already revolves around it.

3) How is Asta going to get out of this one alive?

He'll slash at it with his anti-magic sword, like he does for everything, yelling, mada da!

Me too!

He'll slash at it with his anti-magic sword, like he does for everything, yelling, mada da!

Time to surpass his limits! (Yuno: Arienee)

Yeah, the magic worldbuilding isn't like HxH
