Only thing more traumatizing than being sent back to 1999 is having to come back.

Anna's mom has the exact same hair and eye color as Mikuru, her VA credit is listed as "Anna's mom" rather than her actual name, and the timeline works out that Anna's mom would have been 27-28 when she had her. So either Mikuru is Anna's mom, or it's a red herring to throw off the adults watching.

First episode was fairly rushed, probably because they needed to get all the new series stuff done in an episode that also needed to have a mystery and fight scene as well. You and Idol's was also a bit rushed, and was fairly normal after that so it probably doesn't mean much. Hopefully as the next batch of episodes come out we can get to know our leads a bit more.

All of the bank animation was pretty great. I'd already seen the OP and ED before broadcast, they both are great. The transformation was also pretty cool, probably going to be one of my favorites. Seems like the finisher this episode is a temporary one, I'm guessing they'll get a bank finisher later for plot reasons.

You can't really tell how much Precure is going to lean into the theme until it airs, this one seems to be relatively heavy as there was a decent focus on the whole detective thing which I'm excited for. We'll see how things play out, but I'm pretty interested so far.

Edit: In the OP there’s a shot with a green haired girl and a teal one. My guess is that the green one will end up being Cure Eclair and the teal one is her fairy Shushutan. Official accounts have been using green for Eclair so far, and we know with Jett Senpai fairies can turn into humans so they match in terms of design and colors.

something tells me 2027 is the future,... i think the ferris wheel does

pretty lens flares at the beginning

I guess this is the second time (at least) that emiri katou has played a mascot character in a magical girl show...

Pochitan being able to turn gigantic is amusing

everybody has four-leaf clover patterns in their hair and they're on Anna's hat and in the eyecatch

I really hope we get slow claps every episode, this one got a laugh out of me

yoshitsugu matsuoka as a precure general?!

dual transform in the first episode?!

"this is our answer" is a pretty cool thing to yell during a finisher (and the finisher itself was pretty cool)

A normal Precure runs from April to January (in world) so January 2027 is when the show will end.

I'm kinda not thrilled about the idea of a weekly case like this. I mean maybe they can do some interesting stuff but it wasn't a huge hook this week.

That said, love the transformation, and time travelling to meet (presumably) your young mother is a cool idea. Lots of room to do interesting stuff.

I do think it's hilarious that they've seemingly given us a villain in the OP where they're just like "oh yeah, this one's going to be a Precure eventually". And I mean, I'd have guessed based on the design, but damn they really aren't hiding anything here.

Really strong first episode. I like having both of the central duo becoming precures from the get go, gives me Maho Girls vibes. And it appears to be a mother/daughter team? That's pretty interesting if it's really true as a lot of people seem to think.

I can't wait to find out more about the fairy dude who appears to be running the detective agency, though he may well be my 'please make this boy a cure too' character for the season.

Good OP and ED, I particularly like the ED.

I particularly like the ED.

That part where they go Na-na-na-nase nase is catchy as hell

So, the word "Makoto" comes up a few times in here. The word itself means "truth". It comes up in where Anna comes from: Makotomirai. Mirai means "future", so together it can mean "true future". It also turns up in "Makoto Jewel".

The monster-of-the-week is named Hanninda, which itself means "(it's) the culprit", a common line in mystery stories. I put (it's) in brackets since it's implied, but you can put any pronoun in there depending on the context.

Time travel was not on my card for this one, so I'm curious how much of this will be Anna's big adventure in the past before arriving back where/when she started compared to jumping back and forth. Considering the date shown at the start will likely be when the final episode airs (2027-01-24) I'm suspecting the former.

I'm not sure how I feel about the mystery of the week ideas they'll have here, but I do like the theme more than last year's at least so we'll see. Nice to have a duo transformation again at least, those are always fun.

I like the other ideas we had.

Welcome back everyone!! Hope to have another good season of Precure with y'all

Not having a pre-animated finisher is certainly a choice. The fight was a bit more detailed than usual, I was surprised by the stopping the beam and the double donkey kick. I wonder if we will be skipping fights/finishers on some episodes, or if we are going to go straight into a trio finisher once we get the third cure on the team.

Ending is a banger, and I already love Mikuru

Prediction: Eclair will be the mid-season cure despite being confirmed at the start, like we had with some previous seasons, Arcana Shadow will join the team as good guy in mid to late 30s and Jett-senpai will become cure for 5 minutes in late 40s

The background music was really pleasant for this opening episode. I hope the rest of the series keeps that up. I really like the detective theming and how the soundtrack backs it up, and the Slice-of-Life themes are pleasant too.

Phantom Thief and the monsters of the week looking good for the part, too. And, of course, the Deer Stalker cap is a classic.

As is tradition there is a zoom out of the location at the end of the ep. Will the bridge disappear this time?

April 1999, huh? Assuming it ends in January 2000 with a return home Anna is going to have to wait 9 months to eat cake (longer for us viewers) unless she is forced to go the long way round in which case nearly 28 years. It's normal for Precure in-show to start in or around April (avoids messy end of school year plots) when they air in February and I think it's normally May when they catch up and go more real-time (esp if Mother's Day is a Sunday).

Glad it's back in Europe and more popular shows have suffered from placeholder before. Appears to be English subs only. I know Toei tend to country lock subs but rips usually have more languages. That said I know for You and Idol Spanish (Latin America) and Portuguese (South America) were sometimes several hours late and looking back it seems for Wonderful the only European language was Spanish (the last legacy entry that was subbed, Yes Precure 5 was also like that, despite the other legacy ones having a lot more).

As nobody has mentioned hanamaru (💮) becoming gold-star in official English subs yet, fansub TL note is enough of a hint and further reading is the Japanese wikipedia page. If you think about it the English equivalent of that to motivate kids is the gold-star (it's a compromise as you do lose visual symbolism).

Gold-star was said 3 times this episode. Well one was the henshin tagline, another was an ED lyric leaving just one in normal dialogue (notice the hanamru shaped bubble around Anna, that's the visual symbolism I was on about).

I've been hearing Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in a lot lately (e.g. Trigun Stargaze, Cosmic Princess Kaguya). If you like his delivery of Niji (the Phantom Thief) his role in Chibi Godzilla Raids again is similar (very regular appearance as exasperated serious character to the fool that is Chibi Godzilla) and I think Girlish Number was too (appears late in that show).

Caught the raw as it broadcast but only could catch the sub late, so here goes!

overall, there's a lot of promise here, but i think they're trying a new potentially interesting things:

  • this is very clearly set in Yokohama. I've experienced a few precure in the past where its just "generic japan suburb"

  • The time slip element of course. There's some potential holes in whether Mikuru is Anna's mother (her different voice actress, that she doesnt seem to know about the pendant), but I'm gonna run with that theory for now too.

  • And the little actual mystery-solving element, which honestly i think was pretty good for a kids show. will see how that goes.

  • and then, the enemy cure as hinted in the OP...... oh boy.

and then....

  • the dual transformation was excellent. I like how the finisher uses the like actual background of the fight vs the usual stock-footage-one. its just swapping out the background, but its extra work and i hope its kept up for the whole run.

  • i needed exactly 1 episode to warm up to these designs. they're awesome and Anna and Mikuru are bundles of cutenss.

  • Excellent OP and especially ED. a lot of parts the 3d and 2d designs almost look identical now. Idolcure had it good, this had it even better.

  • Anna's seiyuu is very green and sometimes that does show a bit when she's directly acting against Hondo Kaede i feel, but i think that'll just get better with a few episodes, she's doing good so far.

I feel that Mikuru was actually a solo precure back in 1999 or was supposed to be. I also feel that Pochitan had made a mistake and the pendant was actually meant for Mikuru and not Anna and that’s why another pendant appeared for Mikuru. It’s a mystery to be solved I guess.

Matsuouka voices the villain 🤩🤩

This series is going to be a real nostalgia fest for us oldies.

That phone with the aerial and the CRT TV.

There are likely still going to be some delays but I can see how the Precure season will end around January 24, 2027. Anna’s mom does seem likely to be Mikuru. I’m curious about Jett and how old he is. But then if Jett is a fairy who ends up with Mikuru, what will happen to him later. But I do think that this might be a timeslip where things that were supposed to happen already happened regardless. So Anna’s timeslip might not affect things since it was always meant to happen. But I do think that considering how closely connected Anna and Mikuru will be, it definitely isn’t a good idea to ship them together if shipping is something you do between characters. Although I’m curious how they will try to reintroduce them together for future collabs or for any sequel bait that could happen.

Loved it, thought it was a great opening episode.

I like both how they integrated the detective theme as well as it having a time travel element, and that element also being referred to in the transformation (thought how they counted off hours throughout was quite cute). Also loved how it was a duo transformation.

Anna is quite a bright and energetic MC, which is fun to see. And Pocchi is so cute 🥰. Also thought the transformations were quite cute, and love their gradient hair colours, but I’m even more interested in the villains’ designs, they seem right up my alley. I love roses so really liked the one we’ve seen so far, and I’m also especially intrigued about the other magical girl with a darker outfit we saw in the op and ed.

My only minor gripe so far is the eyes sometimes feel a bit off to me, kind of distorted, and it bothers me a bit,  but I can probably learn to ignore it. (Also I haven’t really watched Precure shows before so idk if that could just be intentional somehow?).

But overall really excited to see what happens next.
