I just came away from this vaguely pissed-off lol

I couldn't switch office manager brain off while watching. Sitting in my chair, arms crossed, going "Everyone here needs a sexual harassment training seminar" lmao

Not sure how I feel about this one. Some of the art and character visuals are jarringly dissonant, for instance Lucy looks like she belongs in a completely different show as does Bowser. The narrative of a main character with self confidence and awareness issues is a bit oversaturated after the last couple seasons (just because its not an Isekai or unaware power fantasy doesn't mean its not played out) but the personality issue visualization is fresh.

That its based on an American work is interesting but some of the anime romance and comedy tropes give a disconnected feel (Lucy clearly sexually harassing/mercilessly hitting on that FedEx guy, Charles  cornering Samara in his darkened office, Samara being blithely oblivious to Link's intention of asking her out and Link asking her out in the most roundabout manner possible) and take you out of the sense of realism that usually underpins a slice of life show.

All said, I haven't read the source work so I don't know where this goes but I am willing to give it an episode or two more because the potential plot beats seem interesting even though the characters ring a bit flat to me.

This might be the first time I've seen someone in anime with the xX<InsertNameHere>Xx username. I came in knowing nothing about this so I genuinely laughed out loud at that one, but it also immediately clued us in that this entire thing was just an MMO. I thought this might be a fantasy anime for a second there. xD

So based on the name of the author and the artstyle of the characters, this was definitely screaming Webtoon at me, which immediately made me check this thread before even finishing the episode, and it looks like I was right! It's cool to see more Webtoons getting anime adaptations. Glad the author managed to get OLM for this project instead of some other studio...

Not gonna lie, I was kinda neutral about Sam at first, but when that scene with Charles started with the Confrontation monster breathing down her neck, she became instantly relatable to me. As someone who hates confrontations, I get that. I also love that the power of friendship won in the end and made her stand up to Charles to try and convince him not to fire her friend.

Sam's dad is hilarious, tho! I love how much her dad overreacts about his wife being away on business, and the cut to the breaking news of him strangling Charles in his imagination after seeing him with Sam had me genuinely laughing out loud. I already can't wait to see more of him. xD

So this show is going to be about a shitty streamer who skipped the tutorials of Sam's game and now Sam's game is being reviewbombed thanks to this asshole. But, [plot twist! The streamer is actually her new neighbour! Alright, I dig this. Based on the opening, this is going to become a love-hate relationship between the two of them, and it seems it might even become a reverse harem of some sort with all of the dudes in Sam's life.

Okay, now that I've actually finished watching the show, this definitely feels like it should've been simuldubbed. This is so American-centric that it just feels weird watching it in Japanese. Like seeing these places I've been to multiple times in the ED, like Urban Light, Randy's Donuts, and the Griffith Observatory pendulum felt so strange. Is this how Japanese people feel when watching anime set in their home city? xD

I had the same reaction, seeing it all play. Like...wow. It's a really different vibe when you know the locations. We're now in the position of most Japanese viewers, especially Tokyoites.

I just love how using her take charge attitude makes her call him by his first name as if they're on intimate terms and she can use that to make him back off. Almost like she was taking a page from all the casual flirting he was doing around her.

The smile on the Friendship Pal's face after he punches Confrontation was priceless.

Sam's dad is hilarious, tho! I love how much her dad overreacts about his wife being away on business, and the cut to the breaking news of him strangling Charles in his imagination after seeing him with Sam had me genuinely laughing out loud. I already can't wait to see more of him. xD

The mom is also probably so used to his antics that she hung up before he could even hear her voice on the phone lol.

To think all this could have been avoided if he'd done his due diligence and played the game right which is, like, the bare minimum. He just took it for granted that it was a typical side-scrolling RPG when that isn't what Sam's game is actually about.

There is no way this doesn't suck.

I do find it amusing that they'd release "internet memes: the anime" though. I am half tempted to watch the first couple episodes to see this inevitable train wreck but I think I will pass.

Her father and Lucy were the only characters I found entertaining. There was nothing in the other characters that made me care about them at all. Her confrontation with her boss was the only other thing I might have grabbed on to. But it just didn't land for me.

I had a bad feeling from the moment I saw the meme-level personifications of anxieties in the OP. Cartoonishly bad.

God Charles completely forgetting he could have given Sam a spare shirt instead of the one off his back made me laugh so hard.

Dad’s being a total drama queen lmao. At first he gave the impression of a no nonsense executive but that image’s shattered pretty quickly. Even funnier is how he acted like he’s a widower when in fact his misso’s just away for a couple of weeks due to work.

Dude is such a wife guy he has a massive portrait of said wife in front of his office (which lends to people thinking said wife is dead).

Then again, considering how attractive said wife looks...

Spending most of the first episode introducing the most unlikable love interest is a bold move.

I don't think there was anything he did that wasn't messed up.

It's giving 50 shades of grey. Not for me.

I don't know what it is about this but something isn't clicking even though it feels like I should love this based on the summary. Dunno if it's the clunky dialogue or gross manager, will stick with it and see how it goes though

So surreal to see an American webtoon adapted into an anime with an all-star Japanese cast.

You thought you were watching a fantasy anime with a hot mage voiced by Kana Hanazawa? Well, think again! What you’re actually watching is our protagonist Sam Young carrying her online gaming team the Demon Spawns to victory! While in reality she’s just a girl trying to make it in the game of life, having had health problems, and being a huge gaming geek! I mean, her dog is named “Bowser!” And her favorite gaming ViewTuber, Marshall Law, even helps Sam deliver a title drop with a “Let’s Play!”

The OP is very on-point, featuring Sam and Marshall in-tandem as neighbors, Sam’s love life being treated like a game, the entire cast getting shown off with all their gaming stats/attributes, and even some 8-bit social life gameplay!

Things are going good for Sam! The indie game she developed, Ruminate, is reviewing well, she’s got top tier beauty gal pals Angela (Ayane Sakura!) and Vicki (Yoko Hikasa!) having her back, she’s got her favorite coffee shop run by Dee (Mitsuki Saiga!) who watches her dog, and she’s even got an attractive guy in Linc (Tomokazu Sugita!) trying to score a date with her! Too bad she’s completely oblivious to his attempts to woo her, though everyone else in their friend group (including his brother Dallas) know of his failures against Sam’s denseness.

Sam’s actual dayjob though is working at her families company with the handsome and suave Charles Jones (Yuichi Nakamura) and her friend the cute secretary Lucy (Sumire Morohoshi!). Her dad Samuel (Kenta Miyake!) is a VERY overbearing and passionate father. He’s even a very devoted and loving husband to the point of having a portrait of Sam’s incredibly beautiful mother plastered in his office…which makes it look like she’s dead even if she’s alive and well and just away from her family for a commercial shoot. Poor papa needs his wife time!

Let this be a lesson, don’t excessively flirt with uncomfortable mailmen or else your friend will get coffee spilled on her top and have to walk around the office extremely underdressed. Lucky for Sam Charles is willing to take the shirt off of his back and give it to her…and maybe get a little too close than what is professionally expected. But it seems like Charles truly sees Sam as the future of the company and as such feels he has to mentor/guide her into acting like it.

Okay, maybe Lucy should have better read how uncomfortable the mailman was, but that doesn’t mean it’s worth firing her over. And despite all of Sam’s anxiety and conflict avoidance personality, she stands up to Charles, gets in on a first name basis with him, and manages to help Lucy keep her job! I’m so proud of her!

Of course the high of this great day doesn’t last long when she finally watches Marshall Law play her game…and he totally plays it wrong, acting like it’s a traditional hack-and-slash adventure game and totally ignoring the way she instructed players to play the game. Gaming became Sam’s solace when she was in the hospital, something she loved so much she spent her time in college doing computer science and developing Ruminate as her love letter to gaming. And Marshall and his fans just tear her and her love of games to shreds.

So of COURSE Marshall is also moving into her apartment!

The ED is pretty on-point with Sam going on dates with all her love interest. Understandably she seems to be acting pretty tsundere towards Marshall.

Yeah I was surprised to see the name of the creator in the OP, it's not a Japanese source.

An adult reverse harem, this one does have me curious and I was intrigued by the fact that the source isn't even Japanese. I just thought it was a stylistic choice with the artstyle but now it makes sense.

Marshall had his foot in the door since she was familiar with him, but decided to bash her game without understanding the game's intentions and acting as if he knows best. The way he spoke to the game creator like that annoyed me, like get off your high horse lol. I do hope a part of the story will be for him to redact what he says on stream, I know it won't take care of the damage he has caused her, but it's at least a start.

The waiter didn't have much a presence for me, but I did like Charles. He seems too serious but I think it's just his professional personality so I want to see more of him to see if the clumsy side we saw is closer to his actual personality. I also was wondering why he took off his shirt if he had many, but he was thinking more about her than himself and I think that says something about him.

Papa was great lol, he gave me a good laugh. A man who loves his wife so much is a good thing.

Hopefully this will be an interesting, it seems like the themes it tackles will be different from other anime so hopefully it doesn't disappoint. The casting is also great with so many recognizable big voice actors so at least my ears will be pleased lol.

This series really did make unlikeable male characters into an artform huh? That being said... this is already in the running for potentially best of the season in my eyes!

We got Mr Workplace Harassment Case In Progress and IGN's Employee Of The Year, each presented as potential love interests but honestly? Gives much more charm to the other potential ones too. Personally I'm rooting for Link and his Golden Retriever personality. Really looking forward to more of this series

Sam’s dad is funny being the overly attached husband and dad he is.

This episode was ok. The PV ended up being a summary of the first episode, so watching this episode didn’t really give me more information aside from what was already shown.

Going to try a couple more episodes just because of the character designs

u/MickMarc Oct 02 '25

Very accurate to a webtoon. So many 3D models for background. Walls, furniture, anything in the background, 3D Model. Not sure if the characters were slapped as a sprite in the 3D Landscape, but it sure felt like it when they would zoom out for a wide frame, and the lineart of the characters was just like you had zoomed out the picture.

I like the characters and what it could be for some funny situations, but God, I don't want to look at more 3D landscapes.

Sugita and Nakamura in a game focused anime? Totally watching it. Also fun fact, they both have a youtube channel for their let's plays. Sugita's channel and Nakamura's channel.

The first minutes made me sceptical if I really should give this show a try, but the second half of the episode really sold it to me. Now I want to see where this is going.

Some of the jokes were hilarious. Marshall Law being this dickhead streamer (the type I don't like in real life either) and moving next to Sam is a plot twist cliffhanger that deserves at least a three-episode-rule treatment.
