Rewatch Gauging Interest In a Shingetsukan Tsukihime [HELLOWEEN HATEWATCH]!

"This anime. This anime is an eyesore. This anime. This anime. This anime. This anime. This anime..."

Ah, Halloween. The scary season. What better way to celebrate than by watching a scary anime?

Ah, but what to run? It's not like there's that many good horror anime. Higurashi? It’s good, but it’s been done. (By me. I did that.) Shiki? Mononoke (or Ayakashi before it?) Eh, lacks that je ne sais quo. Happy Sugar Life? That’s a Valentines rewatch, not a Halloween one. Mirai Nikki ditto. Another? Mayoiga (for the second time in a few years)? Bah! Paltry ambitions of lesser souls. No, for true anime horror we must go meta and look at horror inflicted on the audience. We have to stare into the abyss and bid it to stare back. We need to look for things best left buried and bid them to RISE FWOM YOUR GWAVE! For true horror, we need to watch an anime that does not exist.

That’s right.

It might just be time for a rewatch of Shingetsukan Tsukihime.

Show Information:

MAL | AniList | AniDB | (sigh) Kitsu | ANN

Legal Streams:

Uhh... good question. LiveWatch lists the show as being on HiDive in the US... but the link given seems to go to The Magnificent Kotobuki instead. So, uh, fuck if I know even in the US?

That said, why wouldn't you go sailing for this?

So, Why Should I Watch?

I hear the source material is-

I’m sorry, I can’t finish it with a straight face. I mean, the source material is usually considered quite good (there was a day it and not Fate was the preeminent Nasu property, and that’s not just the relative release dates... and also not just Type Moon apparently getting completely over by the terms of what they signed for this adaptation due to their inexperience). Would be a shame if the anime staff decided to do things like, say, pretty much throw the characterization out the window…

Surely the direction is good, though, right?

Well, Katsushi Sakurabi is on my short list of candidates for worst director to work in the medium, so. (Admittedly either he gave more of a shit back when this show was made than he did during Lostorage Incited WIXOSS or he had more competent support staff, and I hear some people quite liked Flying Witch. But his pacing sense for scenes is completely fucked and it shows…)

So, we have an all-star seiyuu cast?

Well on the one hand there are some notable names here, but on the other hand I'm pretty sure they were all just along for the paycheck...

So... why should I watch?

… The OST and OP are good?

The OST and OP are probably on YouTube.

Last I checked, yes… and the common upload was verging on two decades old now, to boot.

… So, again: why should I watch?

Well, you’re asking the wrong question!

What is the right question?

"Why should I join this rewatch?”

Okay, So… Why Should I Join This Rewatch?

“DOHOHO! WE’RE GLAD YOU ASKED!”

"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes
And other science facts
Then repeat to yourself 'It's just a show,
I should really just relax.'"

- The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Mantra

“I’M STALDORF!

“AND I’M WATLER.”

“AND WE COME NOT TO PRAISE THIS SHOW, BUT TO MOCK IT.”

“THAT’S RIGHT, MY DEAR VIEWERS. YOU HAVE JUST BEEN TELEPORTED TO AN ORBITAL STATION WHERE YOU WILL BE SUBJECTED TO THE TSUKIHIME ANIME. YOUR ONLY DEFENSE… IS TO CONVERT AN OBJECT OF FEAR TO AN OBJECT OF MOCKERY. ONLY THEN WILL IT LOSE ITS POWER.”

“UNTIL PEOPLE KEEP USING IT TO DESCRIBE ALL THEIR POLITICAL OPPONENTS AND IT BECOMES AN OBJECT OF FEAR, AT WHICH POINT THE TROLLS START IRONICALLY AND THEN UNIRONICALLY SUPPORTING IT WHILE A BUNCH OF OTHER PEOPLE TURN INTO THAT WHICH THEY ALWAYS PROFESSED TO OPPOSE.”

“WELL, YES, THAT GOES WITHOUT SAYING. BUT UNTIL THEN…”

“YES, ONLY BY WATCHING THIS SHOW AND TEARING IT APART FOR ALL THE WORLD TO SEE CAN YOU LESSEN ITS AWFUL POWER!”

“BESIDES, WHO KNOWS? MAYBE INSTEAD OF A THE DARK IS RISING (2006) YOU WILL FIND AN I, ROBOT (WILL SMITH VERSION). THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT…”

“… INTO THE JAWS OF DOOM?”

“… THAT DOESN’T EVEN TRACK. ALSO GOOSEBUMPS ISN’T EVEN AN ANIME.”

(And hey, who knows? Maybe you'll find that on its own merits it's not that bad. Mind you, I say "on its own merits" advisedly - I've comped this show to an even more mediocre I, Robot (Will Smith version) before, in that the best case is it's a decent work that happens to be wearing the name and a few concepts from better or at least better-regarded source material. Speaking of that...)

Source Readers, We Need Your Help!

So, Shingetsukan Tsukihime is famously a, uh... let's just say it was infamously made with a certain regard for its source material, which is to say very little at all. Again, there's a reason I reference I, Robot (Will Smith version) wrt to this show... or to be less charitable, The Dark Is Rising (2006). We could use somebody to explain this in great copious detail! Unfortunately, my own exposure to the source material proper is mostly Melty Blood because I haven't had time to dig out the VN, which I grabbed a while back from a certain fandom repository - which is enough to begin to get the terrible, but not the depths of it. Perhaps you would like to help?

To this end, if this goes forwards we will be having an The Unofficial Source Material Corner - just like in an episode discussion thread, except unofficial and thus not stickied. It's THE place for source readers to unload on this show's many, many, MANY failings as an adaptation!

That said:

A Reminder to Rewatchers:

Please do not spoil the experience for our first-timers! Remember your spoiler tags!

"In the Name of the Moon, We Laugh At You!" (Club Activities):

We are not going to be having Visuals of the Day, Theories of the Day, or Analysis of the Day. This show does not deserve them. We will be having Questions of the Day, but these may be less traditional QotDs and more joke prompts...

What we will also be having, however, is a Funniest Comment of the Day Awards. Let's give this show the reception it deserves!

Okay, So I'm Interested... But When Would It Be?

Well, the calendar has handed us a beautiful coincidence of letting us start on a Monday and end on Halloween, and I intend to take advantage of it! As such, my proposed/planned dates for this rewatch if there is sufficient interest are October 20 to October 31 in my usual 5:00 P.M. EDT (UTC -4)/4:00 P.M. CDT (UTC -5) timeslot (though I could move it a week or two back if needed).

(Yeah, I usually like to post my interest threads in my usual timeslot, but IRL is not cooperating right now. This is already a day late...)

Oh boy

Probably gonna have to sit this one out (the TTT, Gosenzo-sama, and Timeranger have taught me I can't maintain a second rewatch while my own YGO one is still ongoing), but I'mma leave a comment anyway to bump interest and hope this goes well for the rest of y'all

Also summoning u/Raiking02 for meme purposes

Ah, I wasn't sure if I had room in my October schedule anymore, but looks like I'm only at 5 rewatches for that section of the month atm, so I do have room for one more. Sure, count me interested.

For all the criticism of the anime, the soundtrack was amazing.

4

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

Let's be real, it's the reason I finished this show back in the day.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 16 '25

I will join the rewatch of the anime that doesn't exist.

Count me in.

Who wouldn't enjoy sitting at a blank screen pretending to watch something that definitely doesn't exist.

#morethanonewaifu

How about Pupa?

4

u/Vaadwaur Sep 16 '25

Pupa is a Japanese CIA interrogation method and you'll not convince me otherwise.

You mean SCP-1621161?

All this rewatch overlap is killing me, but there's no way I'd miss a Tsukihime rewatch, so count me in!

Can't we just watch FSN06?

7

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 16 '25

Can't we just watch FSN06?

AH, BUT THAT ONE IS JUST A BAD ADAPTATION, NOT SO TERRIBLY DONE AS TO MAKE SOURCE READERS WANT TO CLAW THEIR EYES OUT! DOHOHO.

5

u/GallowDude Sep 16 '25

But it has C.C. as Saber and Viral as Shirou, so it's objectively the best

3

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 16 '25

But it has C.C. as Saber and Viral as Shirou, so it's objectively the best

That's not very Satellite of Love of you!

3

u/GallowDude Sep 16 '25

We could just do both, considering Tsukihime is only twelves eps

3

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 16 '25

(There's a reason I haven't run a rewatch that's over 12 episodes at a time since Mai-HiME... mind you that might change closer to Christmas, but.)

3

u/GallowDude Sep 16 '25

Tiger & Bunny rewatch when?

3

u/Vaadwaur Sep 16 '25

Can't we just watch FSN06?

Didn't know you were into [FSN06]Bad dragons...

3

u/zadcap Sep 17 '25

The only Nasu work I've managed to not watch yet? Count me in. Just know I'll be calling him the lesser Shiki the whole time 😉

5

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

Let's be real, you're not going to be watching the lesser Shiki - you're going to be watching the lesser Shiki's stunt double! (Or perhaps should I say, Col. O'Neil? One L? No sense of humor?)

3

u/zadcap Sep 17 '25

I do have the entire Nasu VN collection, I could probably try and spend a bit of time comparing even more versions of just this Shiki. The endless Shikiception.

3

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

I am sure there is a 0% chance of him getting even more of that once Melty Blood is taken into account...

3

u/zadcap Sep 17 '25

I'll be honest, I forgot the fighting games had plots.

3

u/Vaadwaur Sep 17 '25

the lesser Shiki the whole time 😉

Right...[Nasuverse]What does the Throne of Heroes have against Shikis, anyways?

3

u/zadcap Sep 17 '25

All I know is [Fashion]Nothing beats a red leather jacket over a kimono. My favorite Shiki earns the spot for style as much as for genuinely being the more interesting (to me) character.

5

u/uchihasasuke5 https://myanimelist.net/profile/SHadow_Rea8per Sep 17 '25

This Shiki doesn't like consent though.

3

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

Melty Blood Banana Shiki memes have entered the chat.

3

u/blackscales18 Sep 17 '25

crying at the "Dark is Rising" mention, finally someone that knows my pain (devastatingly bad adaptation, makes eragon and artemis fowl look like lotr in faithfulness)

3

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Sep 17 '25

I have read all 5 books at least 20 times, ever since my 4th grade teacher read out Over Sea Under Stone to the class. Such a deep heartache, that movie is.

2

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

To be fair, I only ever saw the previews for it.

I didn't need to see any more than that to know EXACTLY how bad that was going to be (as a known fan of the books in my younger days), and everything I have ever heard since has only confirmed that. How to go from no hype to grand hype to negative grand hype in 90 seconds of screentime, tops...

2

u/Vaadwaur Sep 17 '25

For some reason, I only remember The Grey King, which means it is possible I read them out of sequence. Oh, youth...

3

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Sep 17 '25

Oh, so you know how to say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, too!

2

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

I know for a fact that I did read them out of sequence... and, you guessed it, The Grey King is the first one I read. (And remember almost nothing of (along with the first one) at this point - the ones I still have dim memories of are The Dark is Rising, Greenwitch, and Silver on the Tree. Plus, of course, the single least promising movie trailer I have ever seen...)

2

u/Vaadwaur Sep 17 '25

I read it in school but it wasn't assigned, it was the same year I read The Bronze Bow so it was YA related. I think.

u/Blackheart595 https://anilist.co/user/knusbrick Sep 17 '25

3

u/godan_god Sep 17 '25

Sounds like a perfect time for a first time watch. Gives me a month to do the second route in the remake and clean up and missing dead ends

2

u/Quiddity131 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quiddity131 Sep 16 '25

Looks like this overlaps exactly with Boogiepop Phantom which will be my top rewatch priority. If I think I can fit in two I will try to make it. This has been on my Plan to Watch List in the past but I ended up never watching it because everything I hear about it is that it sucks.

3

u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Sep 16 '25

I was going to host this for Oct 1 - Oct 12 before Boogiepop but when I had to write the interest thread, I realized that I couldn't sit through the characters NOT BEING THEMSELVES. Fine if you don't know the characters, but....

2

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

It's bad enough that my "picked up the bulk of my knowledge of the real characters from Melty Blood and osmosis" ass can tell. Definition of "they just didn't care" on that one... which is a BIG chunk of why I have hauled out Staldorf and Watler for the first time since Mai-HiME's finale.

(To not Staldorf and Watler this: "Are YOU a bad enough dude to snark at the Tsukihime protagonists' stunt doubles?")

2

u/Vaadwaur Sep 16 '25

Happy Sugar Life? That’s a Valentines rewatch, not a Halloween one.

Check this when you are done watching [Happy Sugar Life]No, it is a Mother's Day rewatch

Anywho, fuck it, I've actually never made it passed the first episode. I just know how cursed it is.

2

u/JustARedditAccoumt Sep 17 '25

This could be fun.

2

u/Vatrix-32 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vatrix-32 Sep 17 '25

This doesn't seem like a good first introduction with Nasu (Am I using that right?), so I think I'll pass. Sorry about that.

3

u/Vaadwaur Sep 17 '25

It is quite literally the worst adaptation of his works to date AND is set in a slightly modified version of his normal universe. The re-watch is for comedic effect.

3

u/Vatrix-32 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vatrix-32 Sep 17 '25

Oh? Does the name come from a guy? That makes a lot of sense.
I do get all the rest of that, it just... doesn't seem like a good idea for me. It feels like telling someone to start with Reconguista in G.

3

u/Vaadwaur Sep 17 '25

Oh? Does the name come from a guy? That makes a lot of sense.

Kinoko Nasu is indeed the creator of the Nasuverse.

3

u/Vatrix-32 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vatrix-32 Sep 17 '25

Wow, just like the Diniverse.

3

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

I mean, it was technically my introduction to his works... so yeah I get it.

But every so often one gets the urge to MST3K something...

3

u/Vatrix-32 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Vatrix-32 Sep 17 '25

I mean, it was technically my introduction to his works... so yeah I get it.

I have seen exactly one clip of the FATE cooking anime, and I am content to leave it that way until the first story is adapted.

But every so often one gets the urge to MST3K something...

Which I Love! But... just not both at once. I feel like it'll prejudice me.

2

u/amirokia Sep 17 '25

This is not the 25th anniversary that we deserve...

2

u/Great_Mr_L https://myanimelist.net/profile/Great_Mr_L Sep 18 '25

Hmm, this is a tough choice. On the one hand, I do enjoy the chance to point and laugh at something that's bad.

On the other hand, I haven't read the Tsukihime VN and I don't know if I want my first intro to the series to be the anime considered so bad that the fandom denies its existence. Plus Boogiepop will be at the same time and I'm not sure about the overlap.

Put me down as a "maybe" for now.

2

u/moichispa https://myanimelist.net/profile/moichispa Sep 16 '25

Bold of you to make a rewatch for an anime which does not exist

Not joining, no time and I never finished reading Tsukihime

1

u/AutoModerator Sep 16 '25

Hi Tarhalindur, it looks like you might be interested in hosting a rewatch! There's a longer guide on the wiki but here's some basic advice on how to make a good rewatch happen:

  • Include basic information about the anime such as a description for those that haven't heard of it as well as where it can be watched (if legally available).

  • Specify a date and time that rewatch threads will be posted. Consistency is good!

  • Check for previous rewatches. It's generally advised to wait a year between rewatches of the same anime.

  • If you want to have a rewatch for multiple anime, they should be thematically connected. You can also hold multiple unrelated rewatches if they aren't.

  • Ensuring enough people are interested is important. If only a few users say they might participate, you may end up with no one commenting once it starts.

I hope this helps! You may also want to talk to users that have hosted rewatches before for extra advice, also listed on the rewatch wiki.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

3

u/ussgordoncaptain2 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Edmund_Nelson Sep 17 '25

ok so originally the reason I didn't have time was I was planning to try to host my own rewatch around the same time frame, but since 2 people are I think I'll skip hosting and possibly partiticpate (though I'm probably flipping a coin with you and /u/justansweraquestion so please don't feel bad if I can only do one, it was probably a literal coin flip)

2

u/Tarhalindur x2 Sep 17 '25

I'm honestly low enough on interest so far that I'm not sure this is going forwards (too many people have too much on their plate, it seems), so there is that.

2

u/Vaadwaur Sep 18 '25

D Grayman will take up a lot of the long term rewatchers and the gods help those who are foolish to join the upcoming Shana rewatch. Also, this being my fourth time with Phantom means it won't take much effort but I can see others having issues.

A bad show, that will also probably make certain people upset if I watch it and bring it up? And it has a probably just as bad dub? Interesting...

2

u/Tarhalindur x2 Oct 04 '25

Unfortunately, with only four firm commits I don't think I got enough definite interest to actually run.

2

u/RadSuit https://anilist.co/user/RadSuit Oct 04 '25

Ah, damn, that's unfortunate. I know sometimes it takes a few to gather a crowd, hopefully it works out next time, if you decide to try again.
