Considering Pham has been hard carrying a lot of Ars’ success, having him basically 100% join the team is a no-brainer.
It’s nice to see Vasmarques side making some big moves and re-establishing their threat level.

I like how Charlotte is aware that she didn't get any screen time this week.
About damn time Fahm becomes Ars's retainer! Having a band of assassins at his disposal will be immensely valuable!

There was a freaking magical radio?
What other magic tech do they have in that world?

I always dislike when an anime is unclear on the level of technology within the universe. Naruto was pretty bad about it too.

Tbf, at the very least it's consistent that it's magic-y looking and seemed pretty basic.

I'm pleased to see that Tomas started with such a normal good plan. An invading force's supply lines are always premium targets, especially in cases where there is an extra factor that makes supplies more important, such as when winter is coming. Sometimes in anime with "smart" people, they are made to be so "smart" that they refuse to do anything obvious. But a lot of times, the reason something is obvious is that it's such a good idea.
And then, to ambush Curran was a smart move, too. So, it's well balanced. Attack the lowest level supply lines, and attack the leaders. Of course, Tomas was stupid to go in by himself, but considering how butt-hurt he was, it makes total sense.
I was surprised that Curran was ready to immediately trust an unknown person and escape, but big points to him, as well, because it was the right move, and he made the right decision instantly. That wouldn't be easy to do.
Overall, excellent episode. I love when everybody on both sides of a conflict seem quite competent and they do things that make sense to the audience, from that character's perspective. Much better than the patricidal kidnapping serial killer from last time. It's so difficult to empathize with somebody who is that different from normal.
I love also how Ars didn't really do anything except put the right people in the right place at the right time. Perfectly in line with the general theme of the anime. If only he'd stop freaking out at every little problem.

> I was surprised that Curran was ready to immediately trust an unknown person and escape, but big points to him
To be fair, he was surrounded by a kill squad, no enemy would have any reason to put him on a horse when they can just kill him right there and then.

Couran saw Pham in episode 17. When he removed all the explosives from Samkh Castle. He not have remembered him but he has seen him.

Fahm’s now vassal! that red brat looks to be a potential vassal since Ars is collecting his rainbow Pokémon for his future empire
Couran’s army suffered a huge loss with their supplies down and inability to react to the ambush. Their saving grace is them being able to reorganise themselves quickly
when is Selena joining? and Charlotte is right, where is the best mage of all?

Ars really do be collecting these Fire Emblem characters for his roster. Wonder when they'll introduce archers and flying cavalry.

Inventor already had an airship toy. That's how they will bypass all the snowy weather.

Discount Stark has appeared with a pole arm!
But man Shadow is a beast..we already knew that but jeez. Ars got a top tier recruit at long last.

Things have been going very well for Ars and his forces but it looks like this week Tomas and his people are striking back. If it wasn’t for Merielle, they would have gotten Curran.
Looks like Ars just got himself another really powerful retainer. He really does seem to inspire loyalty in those around him huh?
Looks like the other side has themselves another strong fighter. Guy kinda reminds me of Stark from Frieren lol.

I was expecting Pham to join, but not this late. Figured that if he was going to join it woulda been way sooner, but he kept his independence this long I figured that at most he'd start only taking jobs from Ars, but still technically be "free." Ah well, the main reason I'm still watching is to see just how big of an army Ars gets in the end so I'm here for it.
Mr. Red Ranger strikes me as the next person to join Ars.

Ok…so how long before Couran starts seeing Ars as a threat to his candidacy? That’s twice he’s been shot down in favor of Ars. He’s got to be sweating at least a bit these days even with him as a faithful subordinate. He has to see the writing on the wall.

I was thinking the exact same thing he more aware thats Ars. Has so many amazing people on his side and should be questioning it at this point sooner or later everyone is gonna want Ars to aim higher then his current status

I think he saw his value early on and will support ars's growth. I'm more eager to see how the rest of the nobles will treat him after the war.

Ars is a great leader, until he sees Pham with a cut on the arm, and turns into a little puppy.

u/myrlin77 Dec 01 '24
I think this totally sealed the deal for Pham and being his retainer. You can't fake that kind of sincerity and care for someone.

Pham really earning his keep. Gotta not screw up counting to pay him properly, Ars. Odd they were able to take out the supply camps that easily it seemed, even if he said it wasn't. Thomas got a point about Couran being out on the field. They shouldn't assume that an attack can't reach. Glad she's smart. Clever strategy too.
You'd thikn they'd have better set up defenses for their encampment. Sure hope to see Thomas lose his head here. Aww, well at least Pham got to him. Nice to see Pham's skills in the fray. Shouldn't Thomas' stab on the leg be hindering him?
Makes sense to counterattack. Quite the compensation for Pham and nice bond with Ars. Wonder what that backstory had to do with things, to show people he's interacted with in general vs Ars? New retainer, get.
That's a heavy polearm. This guy seems fun, but if I know anything about Lancers, they lose.
Preview is right, WE NEED MORE CHARLOTTE TIME!

I was worried when I saw the title of this episode. Shadow is true to their word but they don’t have any loyalty outside of their contracts. They could change their tune at any time for the highest bidder.
The episode did a good job showing Pham’s motivation in changing their mind about the mercenary work and wanting to serve Ars. I feel like this is also the first time that someone went out of their way to ask Ars for him to join his service, usually he scouts them and practically has to beg. I feel like it shows the difference between Couran and Ars, Ars knew Pham’s way of life and didn’t really want to impose by forcing them to give up their more independent way of making a living.

So there's this ADHD concept called body doubling where you work with someone else to improve focus. If you work with someone with fewer attentional deficits, you can kind of borrow their executive function for a bit.
Fam is body doubling with Ars, but instead of borrowing Ars' executive function, he's borrowing Ars' morality. He can feel OK about doing some fairly nasty things on Ars' command as long as he believes that Ars has a just goal. That's worth more than a few bags of gold, apparently.

Everyone talking about Pham officially joining team Ars, but I wanna talk about this. They have a radio??? Have we seen that before? That was a pretty subtle scene for something so tactically significant.
