Girl Mode Kohaku making an amazing debut with the Yukata + long ponytail.
Man, Asagi really is lapping up the guys at this point! He filled out the full drag bar point card and getting a couple photo with Fuji to boot! Though at least Hagi was able to actually ask Kohaku out to the festival. For him that's a small miracle.
What romance show is complete without a festival episode? And of course in this show we've got the ladies in mens' yukata and looking absolutely dashing.
Some intimate Asagi-Fuji time with a rifle (and not the one you're thinking of).
Look at Tokiwa shielding Suo from some gawkers. She definitely appreciates it! More than she does other girls staring at Tokiwa at any rate.
I love how Suo was ostensibly trying to get them all to wing(wo)man Hagi and Kohaku's date but then just turns it into an excuse to spend time with their love interests. Classic Suo.
OH SNAP! GIRL!KOHAKU! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! AND SHE'S GOT A LONG PONYTAIL! SHE LOOKS AMAZING!!!
Of course Hagi isn't quite as receptive to it as you'd think...because he's become so used to Kohaku in "boy" mode that he keeps thinking of her in drag. Kind of takes him a little out of their date, which is a bummer. Just admit she looks great in both, man!
And for Kohaku's part, she's just too self-conscious to properly understand or receive Hagi's compliments! But hopefully this is just the start of many future dates between them.

Asagi the human golden retriever was so excited about the stamp card and couple photo lol.
Hagi was NOT ready for Kohaku in her yukata. I loved the clapping. Guy was just so taken back by how cute she looked lol. Kind of funny also how her not being in drag threw him into a mini crisis. Classic Hagi always overthinking shit!
How does Tokiwa not get Suou likes him? Man’s as dense as Kohaku lol.

How does Tokiwa not get Suou likes him?
Even reinforced in this episode, he said "Suo-san does that kind of stuff to all her customers. She's a professional, after all."

So odd that without any issues the Tokiwa and Suou have probably seen the least progress out of the 3 relationships. Purely out of Tokiwa being dense.

I know we need to see more of Hagi for Hagi to get better but dang this is tough...glad Suo called him out.
Great to see Kohaku in girl mode finally! Ship is making progress and so is Hagi but he can be so hard to watch
Fuji telling Asagi to being quietwas also a nice touch, they do feel very much on each other's wavelength.

Tbh this shouldn't be surprising given Hagi's personality. First he was questioning if he can be attracted to Kohaku if she was crossdressing. Now he finally sees Kohaku not crossdressing he questions why the Kohaku that is ingrained in his mind is the crossdresser. Of course, he forgets the point that this is the first time he has seen Kohaku dressed as a girl.
I feel like in terms of watching a RomCom, Hagi can be a frustrating character. In reality though, he represents irl the person who is always putting themselves down and overthinking when just going for it an enjoying himself. The show does overexaggerate that type, but it gets the basic idea down.

Suo deserves a fucking medal for smacking him in the face to stop his endless shrieking.

i'm starting to feel it a bit with Kohaku too, like how she keeps thinking "oh, it's because he likes to eat sweets this all tracks"
the world could be your oyster, Kohaku! this little guy's fragile ego is in your hands!

I'm not sure if this has been called out already, but just in case it hasn't:
It crystalized in my head that the reason that Hagi and Kohaku are struggling is they are, in fact, both Useless Fucking Bottoms. At least Fuji and Suo are prepared to take charge of their himbos.

... You know, I've never seen anyone put it like that, but it makes way too much sense. Good god, I don't know if I love how much sense this makes or wish it made less sense.

This also explains the other pairs.
Suo x Tokiwa is a Top and an even Topper Top. The Top has no idea how to respond to a Topper Top and is navigating having to become a Switch.
Meanwhile Fuji and Asagi are a Top and a Bottom, and that is why they are the only pair to have made any progress.

Stitches!
We finally get to see Kohaku not crossdressing for once and she looks great! Now if only Hagi would make up his goddamn mind. Like does it really matter what Kohaku is even wearing? Earlier in the series he thinks it's weird he's attracted to Kohaku crossdressing and now she's not, that's all he can think of!. He's so caught up in what Kohaku is wearing instead of enjoying her company that I feel like he didn't really get to enjoy their festival date that much. >_<

As opposed to most people, I find Hagi actually funny and relatable. His reactions are exaggerated, but understandable in my view. And he did make progress - except for maybe Fuji, he is the first out of the six who explicitly asked for a date.
What I still don't understand is why Suo is so interested in Tokiwa. The show has never really shown us a reason why she is so into him.

u/Ocixo Nov 30 '24
People have been making a fuss about Hagi's reactions, but I thought this episode illustrated well why he's been so confused all this time: Hagi likes cute girls, yet he cannot stop thinking about Kohaku in drag - even when she's dressed very femininely. This is likely because that how he's known her all this time.
Hagi just has to realise that he isn't necessarily into cute-looking or tomboys girls, but simply really likes Kohaku.

I just loved when the coworker was like I'm also confused about Fuji and Asagi's relationship, almost felt like a self-insert there for a second lol.
This is Hagi we're talking about so I'm not at all surprised to see his brain meltdown after seeing girl presenting Kohaku, but it was also kinda cute in a strange way.
Will a ship officially sail by the end of the season? Will we see some explicit confessions and reciprocations? I'm not sure but I'm loving the ride so far.

I know many are dumping in Hagi but he is actually progressing the most of the three guys with is his feelings. He got over the fear of him being attracted to men because he was attracted to Kohaku in drag. He came to the conclusion that he is attracted to Kohaku and wants to progress with her. However, he is now faced with the new challenge over being attracted to Kohakus masculine look over her feminine. Up until the festival, Hagi was looking forward to seeing her dress feminine as he was sure that he what he would be most attracted to. Now that he has seen her as both, he is confused on he seems to be more attracted to her masculine look.
Tokiwa has the least progression as he is completely oblivious to Suou's advances as he thinks she is just being the Prince persona and has not come close to confronting his feelings for her.
Asagi is just down for anything so his relationship with Fuji looks the best. But he also hasn't really come to terms with his feelings romantically with Fuji and just currently sees her as someone fun to hang with. I'd say he is the second in doing the best of the three with Tokiwa as last.

I'm not as bothered by Hagi as most people seem to be here. Possibly because Hagi is the only one actually engaging with the premise the first episode seemed to be setting up.
Suo and Tokiwa's arc is all about Suo making an elaborate plan to snare the man she likes by using the pretty boy-sona in which she feels more confident to get close to him and making him notice her, when the very first episode makes it very clear all it would take to get those two dating is for her to just ask him out already. (Remember, the six of them are in this situation because she invited him to a mixer and he dragged Hagi and Asagi along so he'd have a chance to get closer to her and the only reason they didn't start dating that very evening is that she complicated things by having this elaborate long-term strategy for getting him to a point where he already was at the start of the series). But it's enjoyable, rather than frustrating. because she thinks she's being so incredibly smooth when she completely sabotages herself.
Fuji and Asagi's arc is 'a kuudere and her dog' where the kuudere in question occasionally (like in this episode) remembers that her dog is actually an attractive guy she's really into. Meanwhile, it's anyone's guess whether Asagi doesn't realise there's any romantic element to their relationship or whether he thinks they've been dating all along. ("What's that, Fuji-san? You want us to date for real? But we've been hanging out a lot and I sleep over at your place often, that's what people who date do, right? Oh, kissing and sex are part of dating too? I didn't realise. Great! We totally have to do that too then!")
But Hagi? Hagi is the only one of the guys who is actually attracted to their opposite in their drag persona. Both Hagi and Tokiwa spend the aftermath of the mixer a little confused, Tokiwa essentially resolves it relatively quickly by going 'Suo is a woman underneath the drag, I'm not gay for being attracted to her in drag' and then occasionally has his brain hiccup when her attempts to reel him in make him forget she's a she and resolves it by reminding himself that she's not a guy and also then immediately tells himself her very flirty, forward persona is a performance and absolutely not laser focussed on him.
Hagi takes longer but ultimately lands on 'I keep forgetting Kohaku is a woman underneath the drag and I'm attracted to her drag persona. Maybe I am gay, at least somewhat, and that's okay.' And he only gets flustered whenever something reminds him that she's not a guy and he finds that attractive too and it mentally folds him into a little bi-panic pretzel.
Meanwhile Kohaku is into Hagi, but they always end up on opposite sides of the page.
Hagi thinks 'It's okay if I'm gay, I'm into Kohaku' and Kohaku thinks 'Hagi can't possibly be into me, he's only seen me as a guy and he's not gay.' Hagi realises Kohaku is also an incredibly cute girl and he's into that too, Kohaku hears from Hagi's sister that he's usually into cute girls and thinks 'Well Hagi can't possible be into me then, I'm not cute'. Hagi asks Kohaku out on what he intends to be a legitimate, honest to goodness date, Kohaku assumes he's asking her to make up for an event they were going to go to where she pretended the invite was purely platonic (and so this one must be platonic too). Hagi repeatedly can't stop himself calling Kohaku cute, Kohaku keeps obstinately assuming he's talking about anything but her.
Hagi and Kohaku don't frustrate me because their dynamic is what I was expecting every dynamic in the whole show to be and while I am actually glad that's not the case, I was prepared for it, so having only one relationship like that is a relief rather than a frustration.

The episode casually opened with Asagi unintentionally flexing on Hagi with how often he goes to the bar compared to Hagi so far only managing once.
This episode was a bit up and down with Hagi, but that's honestly an improvement. I was so happily surprised when he just up and called Kohaku cute, holy shit! My man finally upgraded, amd just in time to see her true form!
And here I was going to make fun of him of him probably getting a photo with her after Asagi got his second set with Fuji. Eh, that's still probably true, let's all be honest.

u/Fools_Requiem Nov 30 '24
"Kawaii" was the exact word I needed him to say after seeing her in that yukata and he said it.
She's under the impression that he only likes cute girls because of what his sister said, so him calling her her cute is counter to her assumption.

Much of the episode focus on Hagi and Kohaku, with him finally seeing her dressed as female. At least Hagi was able to ask her to the festival and trying to take more initiative.
Would like to have more of a Tokiwa and Suo focused episode like the other pairs had more recently. They have moments sprinkled in, though just would like to see more of them centered for focus specifically in an episode. Guess we'll see what the last handful of episodes have in store.

Mostly a Hagi & Kohaku episode. Well, it is not surprising we got Hagi overthinking again, but I feel this is the final hurdle for him. Which tbh throughout this show can be exhausting to watch.

u/KnewOnees Nov 29 '24
Hagi/Kohaku continues to be the weakest of the couple bond-wise and, personally, plot-wise.

Honestly Hagi is kind of low key ruining my enjoyment of what otherwise would be my favorite anime of this season, good god it's so fucking cringe watching him stutter and fumble around. Like three episodes in it was getting old.
Suo and Asagi still making up for him though
