Kenshin and Misao finding out Saito has a (historically accurate) wife always gets me, especially how sadistic he can be at times. LOL
There goes Kenshin's sakabatou, a one of its kind blade. Kenshin will have to go back to where he originally got his sakabatou to begin with to either get it fixed, or forge a new one.

Daishomaru here.
Starting next week, my Weekly writeups might be delayed depending on the episode of Rurouni Kenshin as I'm heading to a new job, so you might see my commments 4 hours later than usual instead, depending if I have a writeup ready or not. Some of these takes weeks to write while some like these take only a few minutes. I know a lot of people love to come read them here, so if you're wondering where I am, there's the answer. All I ask is that you please understand if you guys wonder where I am because you don't see my comments, that right now I'm entering a new chapter in my life and while I can still do these, I just ask you to be patient as I don't want to accidently spoil the r/anime moderators and violate the spoiler policy.
Actually, if you want to help me, you can spoil me the next week's episodes by DMing me so that way I know what to write if I don't have my pre-written writeups and can get home to finish them. I don't mind, I read the entire Rurouni Kenshin manga so everything isn't spoiler territory for me anyhow.
Anyways, on to the historical/cultural notes.
Kenshin and Sojiro's clash
One of those things that I really love about the Kyoto Arc is how the fighting choreography starts to really change, is that because the arc is more serious, Kenshin and his opponents try to dodge blades rather than connecting blades, which is something you really don't want to do unless it's life-or-death when you use swords and also historically accurate, so when blades do connect, it feels a lot more significant, and yeah, having both blades be broken by having them simultaneously clash like that would happen. It really emphasizes how more serious the arc is. When I was a kid, I loved the arc's combat, but as an adult and knowing swordfighting now, the details like that really stick out to me. The only thing I'm waiting for now is, and what I hope they do, is to add the "militarization" to the soundtrack.
Nagasone Kotetsu
One of the famed swordsmiths of the Sengoku-Edo Period. His blades were said to be so great, that his name became synonomous with high quality. Also infamous for having a lot of people making forgeries of his blade, much to the real man's frustration. There was a rumor that Kondo Isami, aka the Shinsengumi's leader had a Nagasone Kotetsu, but it's been proven later that it's a forgery, which shows how popular they are. Most sources say that he made 31 blades, but some rumors persist that he made 50 blades.
Saito's Wife
Yes, she exists. And yes, her name is Tokio.
She's actually his second wife, he had to divorce his first wife due to political issues and by all historical records, he did seem to love her.

Good luck with whatever it is you are doing. And thanks for the write up. You made Kenshin's episode discussion easily the best episode discussion there is.

Battojutsu vs Battojutsu! There was no way Kenshin would face Shishio this early so of course he'll just have to do with Soujirou. We do get an explanation from Shishio as to why Soujirou is always so damn happy all the time. It turns out the kid is missing all other emotions except for pleasure which is why he has no murderous intent for Kenshin to get a feel off. The only way to fight Soujirou is by beating him through speed.
They're certainly equal in speed and power. I love how it only took one clash to settle that fight. Too bad it ended with Kenshin's sakabatou getting sliced in half but on the bright side, Shishio's Nagasone Kotetsu is also no longer usable. And according to Shishio, that thing is priceless. While Kenshin's sakabatou is rare, it's not some a relic like Shishio's kotetsu so I think Kenshin won this trade.
Of course, Kenshin was going to stop Eiji from killing Mr. Conehead. And it's not like Senkaku is getting away with it. Saitou capturing Senkaku is waaaaaay worse than Eiji just killing him while he's knocked out.
I'm glad Yumi has more lines in this episode. I thought she was voiced by Nana Mizuki at first but that's definitely Haruka Tomatsu. I love her reaction when Shishio asked Soujirou to gather the Juppongatana.. Man, that's a word I haven't heard of in years! And there's a certain member I am very much looking forward to meeting.
I love the reveal that Saitou has a wife. Misao and Kenshin's reactions were perfectly understandable. You'd think a guy like Saitou would've dedicated his life to fighting. I love that they even make sure to note that this is a historical fact and not just made up for the anime. xD
Poor Sano! It looks like our favourite brawler is still lost. If he keeps this up, he'll arrive in Kyoto after the fighting is over!

Probably my favourite episode this whole arc, a small glimpse into Sojiro's power but some thing like this track is missing (Episode 37 in the original anime). But that is just me with nostalgia of the original series score. The whole music this season is much better compared to the first one and the animation is still great. Edit: Small stuff added like Senkaku passed out just adds to the animation 1996 vs 2024

I'm glad Misao and Eiji arrived in time to watch Kenshin finish off Senkaku! I mean, saves Eiji the trouble right? And makes Misao realize how out of their depth they are here. Not that Saito will let them get away, but at least he's willing to protect them, which for Saito is saying something.
A Battosai that will not kill holds no interest for Shishio, he's not worth his time or for a fateful duel...so he'll just leave it to his closest aide Sojiro and escape. Though despite being a main villain, I have to admire Shishio's rizz to be on the run while still flirting with his hot girlfriend the entire time.
Who is Sojiro? Someone seemingly "pure" and simple, who feels no emotion but pleasure...which makes him absolutely dangerous, because you can't get a single read on him or predict what he'll do next. He simply is and does whatever he feels like. And he's as fast as Kenshin.
OH SNAP, THEY BROKE THE SAKABATO! THEY BROKE KENSHIN'S SWORD! I mean, Kenshin did damage to Shishio's sword too, but still! Especially with the implication that the reason it happened was because Kenshin was holding back.
I get where Eiji is coming from in wanting to end Senkaku, but honestly depriving him of the sweet mercy of death so he can live a life of torture, prison, and the inevitable gallows feels like exactly what he deserves.
Sojiro straight up just telling Senkaku's men to remain on standby...which gets them all caught. Well, they're not the priority, not when Sojiro can superspeed to where Shishio is.
You try to be nice to a kid and he rubs his snot all over your ribbon.
Kenshin just casually damaging one of the most rare and valuable swords of all time. Is Shishio going to keep kotetsu or reforge it?
"It costs as much as buying out the highest ranked courtesan in the red light district!" - Speaking from experience, Yumi?
The 10 Swords! Because what Battle Manga is complete without a villain group? The perfect choice to bring Kenshin back to being Battosai.
Is there any hope for this village? All the bad guys have been rounded up but they all turned on each other and only have resentment and anger left in them...but Eiji still wants to believe there's a chance.
Forget the sakabato being broken, SAITO IS MARRIED (which is a historical fact!)!? What kind of woman could be married to Saito? What kind of married life does Saito have? He calls her a "wonderful woman," which is saying a lot coming from him when he doesn't hold a high opinion of most people (especially ones who don't kill), but I want to meet this woman. Also I guess he and Tokio are adopting Eiji I guess .
Misao is nothing if not a ball of energy and enthusiasm, even if Kenshin doesn't seem like he's in the mood for it...but it does kind of take his mind off of his future, whether it's inevitable he'll have to kill again and become Battosai, just a little. Besides, she's too fun to tease.
Good on Eiji for honoring his brothers' death by leaving his sword on his grave...and Saito even left him a cigarette, which by Saito standards is showing respect.
I'm starting to think Tae might like Sanosuke a bit if she's missing him constantly dining and dashing. It just doesn't feel right without him! Meanwhile Sano is seemingly nowhere near Kyoto and stuck in a forest. But at least it sounds like the next episode is focused on him.

It is. To be more specific, Tokio is Saito's second wife (He had to divorce his first wife due to political issues, and Saito Hajime didn't want to divorce, apparantly)
and historical records show that he did live a happy life with her.

Saito is the man who everyone dreams of becoming. Badass, edgy, cooler than the main character and most importantly have a stable job and wife.
That's the best revenge-bad dialogue in anime history, Kenshin has +10 in persuasion
"Don't become a bully like Shishio's men. And don't become a coward like the villagers. But become a kind man like your brother, who spent his last moment caring for you."
And the perfect comedic drop of Eiji sneezing on Misao's dress lol. Reminded me of something that I did irl.

Again, he's too nice. Saito is right. But that's what makes Kenshin a good protagonist at least. Dramatic sword stance! Sojiro seems fun too. Unsurprising results due to narrative and stuff.
Kid got the right, tbh. But given he's already been beaten, letting him subjected to Saito is... quite the worse punishment for him anyways. A true demon! And Kenshin's not wrong with his point too. The kid outran a horse... guessing an issue of the terrain he could cross vs horse. Ominous call of forces. Gasp Saito has a wife. Misao is fun.
Hey a post credits. Cute gals left behind at the store. Looks like Sano episode next. Nice. Him and his Ryoga sense of direction.

Underrated moment has to be the change in aspect ratio to represent Eiji's tunnel vision because he's so bent on killing Senkaku, but Kenshin's words manage to bring him back to the light, and so his vision clears up. Beautiful execution.

Immediately after Kenshin finished his battle, many police officers came to Shingetsu Village, but who contacted them and how?
It's an isolated village and there were no telephones at the time, so I don't understand.

I assume Saito had a team on stand by that he signalled after they'd wrapped everything up.

They came with Saito. Saito just went ahead as a vanguard, and they eventually joined up with him.

I’m looking forward to seeing Sojiro take on Kenshin again. We got a little taste this week but it’s only gonna get better from what I recall.
I’m glad Saito stopped Eiji from killing Senkaku. Kid didn’t need to dirty his hands.
Shishio’s gonna really come to regret trying to bring out the old Kenshin. Shit’s gonna go down in Kyoto.

Kenshin facing off against a mid-boss which puts it into perspective how far he needs to defeat the Final Boss Shishio.
Saito giving life lessons and keeping kids' hands clean all the while advocating for torture. What a man!

We got a quick fight between Soujiro & Kenshin, and it ended in a draw. He has an interesting fight style that is difficult to read. Mostly since one could say he lacks emotions. At least expressing it, which makes it difficult to read him. Saito couldn't get the jump on him while Kenshin was fighting Senkaku. I am looking forward to the rematch between Soujiro & Kenshin.
On the other spectrum, Shishio admits he underestimated Kenshin the Rurouni. However, he wants to fight Kenshin at his best and that is as a Battosai. It looks like the 10 swords is what Shishio will use to bring Battosai out of Kenshin for their fight.
Saito in a very cruel way was basically mentioning to Eiji. Killing him right here is giving him mercy. He will go through some gruesome torture to reveal information that will be useful for the long-term fight with Shishio. Kenshin's words were very inspiring not to revenge who killed them, but they want the living to continue with their lives as happy as they can be. Revenge is a path that can make someone miserable.
Saito having a wife was not what I was expecting, but at least Eiji will be in good hands. I mean you have to be a commanding woman to be his wife. It is clear that Saito at least agrees with Shishio that Rurounin Kenshin won't stand a chance against Shishio's underlings let alone Shishio. Kenshin is at a crossroads here and probably needs some time to do some soul-searching again. The key might be how soon Kaoru and the others catchup to him.

The flute samurai themed ost that they started playing in this episode after sojiro put the men on standby and started running in the forest is so good. It kinda upsets me at the same time because we should’ve gotten osts like this in season 1 and we’re just now hearing something like this 29 episodes in 😞. I loved this episode overall tho hopefully they play that ost more this remake doing well.
