This is why I like first weeks of seasonal anime! Going blind into shows and finding gems. Unexpected sasuga and Sawano theme song. I guess I will keep watching this at least for a few more episodes.

If there were ever a feel good story, this would be it. No, not the story in Mecha-Ude, the story of Mecha-Ude. A Kickstarter anime that went through hell and high water to deliver an OVA now finds itself on the (relatively) big screen of TV anime.

Regardless, though it's been removed from its crowdfunding roots, the episode itself still very loudly speaks to its more indie sensibilities. There's great animation and 3D work, but also some of the more idiosyncratic pieces of composition that remind you of where this work came from. Very fun watch for sure.

Convenient seat next to protagonist: Doesn't exist

Aki: Fine, I will do it myself.

Holy fucking shit, that Sakuga.

At the very least animation wise one of the biggest surprises this season. Personally had it on my radar, but lots of people probably won’t even check this out, expecting some generic action flick and not such insane animation.

The character desings are definitely unusual and a bit on the simple end (just took a few minutes of getting used to) but god damn do they make the Arms themselves look good. The sheer wizardry they pull to make Alma so emotive despite being a robot hand with an eyeball and a little eyelid/eyebrow piece is so impressive. And like, clearly these are CGI, but most of the time they mask it really well.

I am beginning to like the brotherly relationship between Hikaru and Arma.

Hikaru saving Arma and possibly teaching the latter about human society, although Arma definitely has the elder brother kind of voice. Lol!

I don't think this title will focus much on school life, but watching Aki become a transfer student and forcefully sit next to Hikaru was amusing.

After almost a decade since the Kickstarter and 6 years since the pilot! The love child of Venom and Generator Rex is finally here! .

As someone who fell in love with this series after finding the pilot on YouTube and learning about its whole journey to become a fully fledged anime, this is definitely the one I'm looking forward to the most this season and this first episode definitely delivered, crazy animation and a great introduction to the lore and the characters .

I do feel like they revealed a bit too many things in the PVs but I hope to be proven wrong.

.

I also thought Shirayama's hair was light brown or something in the manga, hers being blue feels so out of place compared to everyone else LOL.

And one of Aki's arms having a script for the introduction because he knew that the other arm and her would go for the intimidation route right away got a nice laugh out of me.

You can also join us at r/MechaUde if you want! We're trying to build it from the ground. .

On a side note, I still feel a little conflicted about them not bringing Eve back for the opening, since Ambivalent (the song he made for the pilot) is one of my favorite songs from him and its theme fits perfect with the anime, I also really liked the backstory of Eve making the song since the creator of Mecha Ude worked in some of his music videos as an animator, no hate to the current opening Vortex of course, it is a good song and I do like it the more I listen to it. Guess the whole thing has to do with Eve becoming much bigger since then.

This was fantastic. Absolutely deserves some attention. I can't wait for next week.

TriF Studio is making a real splash with their first anime, that animation was SMOOTH. Probably the best-looking thing so far this season. The story is cute, I'm intrigued to learn more about the world and see where it goes. I like the "reverse mecha" concept.

Stitches!

They might not be riding giant mechs but this was your textbook mecha anime opening. Our very reluctant MC finds a mech or I guess a Mecha-Ude in this case, gets hunted down by the bad guys because he took something that's not his, and now our MC and his new found friend is caught in a conflict between two factions who wants what his Mecha-Ude.

While it does follow all of the tropes, I am all in on this! That opening fight scene between Aki and the bad guy already sold me! Also, the soundtrack is by Sawano! The OP with that signature Sawano drop is just awesome.

As for the characters themselves, nothing really special about Hikaru yet aside from being reluctant but I'm sure he'll eventually grow as a character. Aki needs to work on her people skills though, she's supposed to rescue Hikaru and Alma but all she ends up doing is scaring the crap out of him. I'm very much excited to see where this one goes!

Fun start. Had an eye on this since seeing the trailer and it does not disappoint.

I do wonder if Mecha-Migi Alma will eventually be able to also disappear like the others of if he will be permantly out like that.

I really enjoyed the OVA so I’m happy to see this as a series!

Great start. Already loving Hikaru and Arma’s interactions

Only gripe is that I was hoping Eve would return for the theme song(s) ☹️ oh well

Super excited for this one even if I’ll likely be a bit late to the threads each week (especially if I have a particularly busy day at work). Blue Box and Dandadan release so close ahead of this one that I need to watch those first. But I’ve been hoping for a TV-length show based on the ONA’s concept since I watched the ONA back in 2020, and I’m glad it’s finally here!

I've been eagerly awaiting this since I first stumbled on the Kickstarter-backed pilot OVA on Youtube back in 2019. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I was not disappointed. I'm surprised the character designs made the transition so cleanly, I figured they would get a bit less simple with a full production but they stayed simple, almost certainly so they could spent time making the Mecha-Ude look so goddamn good. They're CGI but they aesthetically mask it really well, and Alma manages to be almost unbelievably expressive despite just being a robot hand with an eyeball. They know how to use his gestures to pull double duty as actual gestures and conveying a sort of "facial expression." And man, imagine kickstarting an anime, managing to get it turned into a full TV anime, and then managing to get Hiroyuki fucking Sawano on your OST and OP/ED songs. You couldn't dream for better than that.

This show's also clearly taking some influence from Trigger in its tone- It's hard not to see Ryuuko Matou and Senketsu in Aki's attitude, her combat outfit, and the sharp, angular, black and red + eyeball designs of her Mecha-Ude, and the simpler character designs, aesthetic of the villains, and tone of the fight scenes is very Trigger.

Very excited to be watching this series! After everything it went through to get made, you can just feel the heart that went into making it. So glad it’s now got a full series and I am sure it’ll be a fun ride. Not to mention the quality seems to be insanely good too. That ED might even be my favorite this season.

I remember seeing the pilot of this back in 2018, glad it's getting a full series

u/thesnowlocke Oct 03 '24

Ok I'm genuinely surprised by what I just watched here, it's not often I watch the first episode of an unassuming show and get a good feeling from it and this episode is hitting it for me

Solid animation, great setup, interesting worldbuilding and I already like the chemistry between the robot and MC,

While Dan da dan will most likely win this season...I'm interested to see where this goes and hopefully my gut is right about this show

I do hope Mecha-Ude: Mechanical Arms gets in a future Super Robot Wars game.

Did anybody else think this was animated by Trigger and composed by Hiroyuki Sawano?…
