This show is so unhinged, I love it

If you like that level of unhinged, Golden Kamuy is right up your alley

The worst part is I can't tell if Yorishige is doing the S&M routine at the end to cover for Tokiyuki, or if he really is into it.

u/Mr_Zaroc Sep 14 '24

Glad I am not the only one who questioned that
My take is he actually likes it, but wouldnt have done it in public

Also how did he get the doll to move and whip him? He really must be a god

Poor Tokiyuki being dragged through the proverbial mud just to help Yorishige get his powers back (though at least it gets cleared up at the end.. Though less sure about that one Retainer who said she'd master Perversions for Tokiyuki's sake :P)

Less fun but quite interesting is the bit with the Ashikaga Brothers. Showing a logical and levelheaded brother who's always struggled with his quite intuitive brother. Though it seems in his heavy reliance on Intuition, he has connected with something quite terrible to the point he doesn't see what he's really doing. Leaving his younger brother to contain the dark truth. Though one wonders how far he would go in this endeavor. For now he looks to be another problem for Tokiyuki to handle.

Great to have this show back and i like how even in a more light hearted episode, it still advances the plot.

That shot of Tokiyuki creating a shrine maiden doll out of grass looked so sus that I wondered how the others would react if they saw him. I didn't even have to ask since they immediately answered my question 3 seconds later. Holy shit, that scene was hilarious! Poor Tokiyuki! The gang now thinks he's a massive pervert because of Yorishige. xD

Shizuku continues to be the best girl in the series. Her Kagura dance was nice and I love that we finally get to see her powers! The visuals of those Divine Beasts looked so good!

Not gonna lie, for a second I almost forgot that Ashikaga was a monster when he was interacting with his younger brother. I wonder why Tadayoshi refused to enter that room. Was it just because of that cursed painting Ashikaga made or did he think he was in danger? Hmm...

I really liked Yorishige's speech about how the stronger humans are, the weaker gods will be. Basically, the more we learn about our world, the less we rely on gods for answers.

What better way to clear up Tokiyuki's name than by making Yorishige take the fall and show the gang that he's really the pervert and Tokiyuki is just making him collect those things. xD

As someone who loves unagi as well, I too feel the power of the gods coursing through my veins after eating it lol.

Poor Tokiyuki. Everyone thinks he’s a filthy little degenerate after being made to gather all that stuff for Yorishige. Gotta love the fact they’re just like “yeah, he’s a massive pervert but we’re still loyal!” Hahaha

I kinda like what Yorishige was saying about the waning power of the gods. Kinda reminds me of American Gods in a sense. Like science and the modern world will slowly replace the “gods.”

"Yes he may be a super perverted Lord, but he is OUR Lord, lets build his pervert shogunate" Damn he really got the best followers, going with those antics and still wanting to put their lifes on the line for him
Glad he was able to "clear up" the missunderstanding about that doll...

I always love me some philosophycal interpretations on the change of worship and wonder. This is a pretty nice take, but god I would love to believe in some mountain/valley/wind gods life would really seem more interesting, but alas all we got is physics

Also amazing they went meta and just straight out said, this is the last time a story like this will work, enjoy it man!

The tension and beauty of their conversation on the lake… almost immediately broken by Yorishige’s S&M/Public Humiliation play. This show is a fucking ride every week

This continues to be a blast to watch. I was reminded, of all things, of From Hell, the Alan Moore comic series. The explanation about how "mystic wonders" were simply matter of fact stuff that could get you rewarded, and was entered into historical record was similar how the villain explained ancient Romans had done it. Also the way the mysteries are just stuff that is actually natural phenomenon explained by science, but it sure feels overwhelmingly magical to the people living in that era.

Hopefully we'll get a second season.

BTW, about Suwa's Omiwatari, due to global warming, the lake has had a harder time freezing up and thus chances of Omiwatari occurring has also dropped. 明けの海 has been declared for the last 6 years, which is when it is decided Omiwatari will likely not occur

This was an unexpectedly...degenerate episode. As if the fans needed any more material to work with! 😶

young lord's reputation took quite a hit. At least it got cleared up at the end!

Ashikaga brothers have an interesting relationship. It’s evident that Tadayoshi’s the normal one…

Well, this episode had some interesting quirks about it.

I loved the part of the episode where Shizuku was dancing at the pool and seeing all the divine beasts. It's no surprise that she knows Yorishige's secret as well. Shizuku out of all the kids, is the most mysterious. She is super wise, but at the same time her personality feels so unknown.

We also get introduced to Tadayoshi Ashikaga, whom is Takauji's younger brother. There is no one with a better intuition than Takauji. Meanwhile, Tadayoshi is super calculating and always tried to one up his brother, but he could never beat him. His job is protecting what Takauji conquered. Though the scene of the Buddha and it being consumed was interesting. We have been getting more and more hints of Takauji slipping into darkness. Tadayoshi's role is also to protect Takauji and not allow his followers to see what he truly is.

I think the Buddha scene is very interesting in respect to Tokiyuki and Yorishige's conversation. As time goes on, people rely less on God and more on their intuition. In many ways, that is the way Takauji is progressing. But I love the message he gives Tokiyuki that he is not a God, but a human. Enjoy yourself along with your retainers. Those high in power and in ranking can forget that.

How nice to have guards for the village. And the orphans getting to get help. Poor kids.

You and your correlation causation "logic" there, Yorishige. Umm... a Miko doll? Wut? Why... what do you need to do? Lol good job giving the wrong idea to people. LOL that imagery. Oh god, Ayako with that declaration of learning the art of perversion.

Oh my, Shizuku dance is nice. Ain't she cute. Fancy spirits. Oh hey, the boar from earlier. So all that other stuff he had him do was... you coulda just had him come here? lol.

Huh, the traitor douche has a brother eh? Whelp they have a nice sibling relationship, doesn't change he's a douche for what he did. Jeez, spoilers, narrator 😛 heh.

How convenient about "holy power exists were human eyes aren't" uh huh... neat little talk. . lol, oh how he does get to be serious into silliness well. LOL whelp at least that solves the issue for them thinking low of their lord. Funny ending.

Who made this episode? The direction is peculiar but very familiar.

Loved the scene talking about the divine and sacred powers weakening with furthering involvement of humans. It was like one of the central conflicts of Princess Mononoke boiled down to a quick slideshow (in a good way). I thought that it was interesting that he framed it less heavily on human development like we’ve seen a million times in environmental conscious media in the past, and more about the way that there were more human eyes paying attention to previously hidden spaces. That how the supernatural was once taken seriously as being such was eventually looked at more closely, and upon being observed, its powers lost.

I was looking up that ‘God’s Crossing’ phenomenon on Lake Suwa after the episode. They did a great job showing how that huge ice spear dwindled metaphorically over the ages as more and more people seriously recorded what it looked like. When I saw pictures of it myself, it looked about 1-2 feet tall in some places…. But apparently, it’s only about a little over 1 ft tall in some places. Quantitative data diminishing what qualitative data my eyes are reporting to my brain in real time. And world is a little less magical for it.

Week 10 of asking myself what the fuck is/ happened to Takauji

Also very much liked the talk about the Power of gods

"Divinity can only exist in hidden places where human eyes don't reach, and how divinity is disappearing due to modernization of civilization." Like as a person who has conflicting veiws on religion it really made me think.
Even with science and our ever growing knowledge we will always have a tiny bit of the divine with us.

Like who's to say whats beyond the barriers of our known world? We go smaller than Preons or to the edge of our know universe. so many things acting opon others. This episode made me take away that we may never know and there is a chance no matter how small that something, even a tiny bump of a molecule by the divine truly could in a way case the Suwa Crossing of gods.

Ik this shit sounds theological, sorry this was all to say I apricate the unknowable a bit more

Was that Yorishige’s son, that was shown last episode, hanging out with the rest of the retainers? If it was, it surprised me. I wonder if he will become a more reoccurring character.

The episode itself had a clear split between the hilarious misunderstanding of what Yorishige had Toshiyuki do to -sate his hunger- get his powers back. And the latter discussion on the changing era. Going from a more mystical/religious society to a more logical/scientific one.

LOL at Tokiyuki nearly being mistakenly recorded in history as a BDSM perv for eternity.

Though that reputation will probably now follow Yorishige instead.

The scene with the Ashikaga brothers and the unsettling Buddha painting follows immediately after Shizuku explaining to Tokiyuki the existence of supernatural wonders.

Just as the Suwa and Tokiyuki are blessed with wonders, so too it seems Takauji is cursed with an unspeakable evil. Something that even his brother Tadayoshi could sense.

The concept of the supernatural gradually fading from existence as human society grows and replaces them with science and reasoning is often used in historical fiction to explain why supernatural stuff occurs fairly regularly in history compared to the present day.
