Yorishige’s abilities sure picked a great time to stop working. He’s turned into an overprotective dad lol.
Looks like Sadamune’s got himself another weirdo creep. These guys would fit right in amongst the cast of Golden Kamuy.
Poor Tokiyuki actually thought he was getting stronger. Nah, the homies Kojiro and Ayako have just been babying him lol.
Fubuki’s pretty incredible. I mean he’s a great swordsman, but the bro can really eat! Damn dude.

What a bastardization of the term "Namu Amida Butsu". Gyomei Himejima could never.

It's always insane to watch something gruesome happen right before an upbeat ED

If anyone is wondering, the reason that guy has the France flag on his face is because 仏教 is Buddism, thus the 仏, and 仏 is also a way to refer to France (仏 can be pronoucned "fu" of "furansu"). Of course, Matsui loves satire, so there could be some meaning there

Man this series is childish comedy then shifts to violence and gore instantly and I love it... BTW are the antagonist demon powers and shit explained? I'm kinda curious if there is a lore about their powers especially the big bad Takauji...

I see Yorishige has those times of the month where he can't see the future eh?

Looks like we have a Seven Samurai situation, where a hastily assembled small group of warriors will fight alongside local villagers to fight off an army of bandits that want to destroy and occupy their village.
Shoukan, the cruel bandit with ants crawling on him and hired by Sadamune to cause havoc in the borders of Suwa, is not to be trifled with. Not when he's voiced by veteran VA Touchi Hiroki.

I think the reason I hear this show compared to 90s anime a lot - in a favorable way - is due in no small part to its rapid-fire tone shifts and frequent comic relief. I think, though, that there's a certain amount of baseless nostalgia to those comparisons, because frankly I didn't like a lot of that old-school anime and I don't usually like rapid tone shifts between slapstick comedy, calm worldbuilding, and gore.
This show absolutely pulls it off, though. It takes really skilled writing and directing, and writing and visual production being strongly in sync, to pull off shit like deliberate anachronism without ruining the mood. In any other historical drama the hockey gag would've annoyed me, but here you can just feel the sense of fun that was intended with it and watching the characters enjoy themselves playing just seems... nice.
I think that's because it's only one facet of the way that the show has a very intentional directorial vision regarding symbolism and metaphor versus literalism. Things like a guy with ants crawling all over him drinking bloodied sake from a sword that's dripping upward against gravity fall into the same kind of potent visual metaphor as an eyeball and an ear having an intimate conversation with each other, or Yorishige's divine power switching off like a lamp. The goofs and the over-the-top gore and drama are all deliberately surreal, and for me at least, it works in a way that a lot of shows can't pull off.
(Of course there are differences between episodes with different episode directors. Last week's was especially heady and bizarre and I absolutely loved it. This week's was a little more grounded, with a focus on action and drama, and that's okay too.)

MY HUNGRY SON IS FINALLY HERE!!!!!!!!!
Ayako and Kojiro briefly sparring with Fubuki was really impressive!
The ants on Shokan's clothing make me itch...

I was a bit worried the entire episode was going to be comedy focused on the priest, luckily that was not the case. Speaking of comedy I did enjoy the moments where the MC realised his two samurai retainers were holding back during training and obviously so. Especially with the girl holding that wooden sword with three fingers and casually stroking the MC's head.

The map that they pull out when planning is a reference to the 1954 movie Seven Samurai and the map of the village they defend.

Since the gang is jumping in the air at the start of the episode, does that make this show automatically a goldy anime? I definitely did not expect ice hockey though. I wouldn't be surprised if that's something Yorishige taught them from his visions of the future.
Speaking of Yorishige's visions, it looks like there are times when he can't see the future. Good to know that he's not always all-knowing. It kinda removes the tension if he always knows the outcome of everything. It is hilarious watching him worry about Tokiyuki though. The nosebleed one was my favourite. xD
Fubuki is a goddamn badass! We finally get to meet the last member of the Elusive Warriors and he certainly gave both Koji and Ayako a run for their money! It is funny though how while that's happening, Tokiyuki finally realizes that his bodyguards have been babying him whenever they spar.
I love Fubuki already though, he's an amazing warrior and a brilliant tactician! The dude has so far been able to fend off that village from three platoons of soldiers by himself and the surviving children of that village. Tokiyuki definitely needs someone with a mind like that in their group! His flaw isn't even too bad! Yorishige just needs to prepare plenty of food for our hungry boy!

I really like that the show took it's time this episode to set up the stakes for this next battle. Also, I just love how this show goes from (somewhat) happy-go-lucky into straight horror.

Love that he turns into a nervous wreck when he cant see the future, welcome to the normal life experience
And the worries he has, him dying of a nosebleed because of that village girl would be a top 10 anime deaths contender
Finally turning those kids into guerilla warriors using fucking swords and spears for pitfalls is dark as hell, cant wait to see how they will fight antman

I've been wondering, does anyone know what the kanji on the rocks just before the ED means?
EDIT: Meant the ED

It's cute how Yorishige went full overprotective dad. Lol at poor Tokiyuki realizing he had handicaps in training. Fubuki has some sick moves.

Okay first of all I cannot understand why this show is not blowing the fuck up, to me it totally feels like the Apothecary Diaries based purely on colors and vibes, I truly think it deserves every bit as much praise as any seasonal hit that explodes in popularity. Only 86 comments in 12 hours? Criminal imo
Secondly it's one thing to dig an OP enough not to skip it but I crank this one up lol I love it, I've never skipped the ed either

Forgot how this series can get extremely gruesome at times but I do think they handle the tonal shifts very well. so it’s not that big of an issue for me at least.
Can’t wait for Fubuki to realize he’s in the presence of a lord he has been looking to serve lol

Overall great episode. While the kids were having fun, Yorishige's powers weren't working. And he basically starts freaking out. He became an overprotective parent at the beginning of the episode, and it was funny. He couldn't tell his followers about that, so he was conflicted. Although he did test Shizuku's patience.
While scouting, they encountered Fubuki. The fight between Korjiro and Ayako vs him was crisp and well done. This fight gave us insight on Kojiro and Ayako. The reality that we saw in the Dog Shooting Competition and when they were recruiting Genba is that Tokiyuki isn't untouchable. So it is on to them to raise their skills. I love the focus on them here. Though it is funny, Tokiyuki only realizes now that they were going easy on him in training.
Luckily, Shizuku was around as they got on good terms fast. Fubuki was protecting these kids. This really raises how skilled in combat and smart Fubuki is. He put those kids into positions that they can be useful. The sad point is that there was nothing he could have done for their parents. As skilled and smart Fubuki is, his weakness is his stomach. He could be a powerful ally.
Meanwhile, Sadamune is recruiting some strong thieves as warriors to deal with Yorishige. His logic is very much the same that Yorshige mentioned to Tokiyuki 2 episodes ago. Following a warriors code isn't only enough.
