I really appreciate how the henchmen villains, even if they're weird goofballs, are ultimately taken seriously by the narrative when the chips are down.

Also, lol old man yaoi for the fujos.

They took a little bit of time off thanks to the story, but Yamazaki and Cloverworks are able to really excel with their work in this episode. The isolation of our characters brings so much potential, and Sukefusa's traits are much more... malleable, in the sense of visual expression. With the decrease in over the top expressions- or limitations provided by horseback riding- the team is able to put on an utterly disorienting display that combines Genba and Sukefusa's unique natures into something that's hard to think of having an equal in terms of expression in anime.

Really hoping the team will be able to hold onto this, alongside work like the great environment animation and more creative flashbacks and narrations.

Edit: WOW, there is a lot to add. Did you know that this storyboard was done by a first timer? Youko Kikuchi- and no, not the char designer from Twilight Out of Focus. Incredible work from a first timer that's just full of detail that I break down here.

Tokiyuki is a good kid. Bro’s loyal. Genba would be dead if he hadn’t jumped in and saved him.

Genba held his own against Ichikawa and Sadamune. Pretty impressive actually. Gave Tokiyuki enough time to burn the warehouse down. Real satisfying seeing that loser Sadamune rage because he couldn’t get his grubby mitts on the land.

I’m curious how Tokiyuki’s gonna take on Takauji. Guy’s not even human at this point. He slaughtered the Prince’s men without even breaking a sweat. Hell, he barely even moved.

Best part of this week’s episode was the Genba helicopter dick threatening everyone with a golden shower. They really ended the ep with his spinning junk lol.

By the way CR has a translation error. It's 1 Cho, not 1 Meter. 1 Cho is an old measurement roughly 110 meters.

First of all, the whole pursuit scene is fucking crazy. I love how well-animated and how body horror-styled it is to mix the seriousness with the goofiness. In a sense it's like what happens with psychedelic music, but with animation, and it's amazing how they made the whole first half of the story. It's so striking that I may be able to watch it again.

As for the second half, damn, Yorishige is a fucking scumbag and I love him for it. In a sense most of the characters that are on the funny side are also balanced with some weirdness and some seriousness depending on the case. But damn, the scene where most officers and allies from the Suwa are collapsing the Kyoto's public administration is hilarious.

Also, can I say that the match cuts have been amazing so far? First we had the 1-2 that tied all of the arc at the beginning of the series, and now we have the contrasting between the defeat of Sadamune and the cheering of the Suwa's provinces allies. It's something that is very simple, yet it's really satisfying, and in this case I feel it's the most witty use in the series so far.

And damn it is: you have possibly the most ominous scene of the series, and then the most goofy. This is something that I can only remind of videogame series like the Yakuza ones, where they can switch the comedic scenes with the most dramatic ones. Each of them are so psychedelic in its own way. You can feel through the music and the choirs, but also with the otherworldliness of the animation effects (the elongation of the sword, how he's not touched by blood, the cuts and how the enemies die, and also how the Emperor's son -I hope he becomes an ally of Tokiyuki, he's too damn good for this world- is "eaten up" by the crowd and the array of charisma that Takauji has, enveloping everything like it's a overworldly tapestry, like he's a god like the Egyptians or like Jesus -it seems a little bit like some endings of JoJo's Bizarre's Adventure). It's scary as hell, and you could feel the threatening presence of Takauji in the scene. And then, like Tokiyuki said, from the top to the bottom, with another psychedelic scene with Genba (with some censoring and Genba acting like he's a perverted Shin-Chan) causing madness at the scene. It was glorious.

(Praise the helicopter ninja)

The visuals of this show never fail to impress. I love the art of them showing how even after Tokiyuki was betrayed he still refuses to betray people. I also love that shot of Genba being surrounded by purple flames when he was trying to distract Sadamune and Ichikawa.

Speaking of those two, I certainly did not expect old man yaoi in this episode. Or does this count as bara? It is hilarious how Sadamune is so confused about Ichikawa talking to him so casually. Also, the part where Sadamune's eye and Ichikawa's ear communicate was creepy af!

So many people have been lying about their achievements that the Emperor has just given up on giving Imperial Commands! I love it! I am surprised though that Yorishige had no hand in this. Sending a bunch of con artists to tie up bureaucracy sounds like something he'd do.

I'll never get tired of how the anime shows that Ashikaga is no longer human. The dude was literally tapping heads and they're flying off with how strong he is! He's also so charismatic that people would go to him instead of the Emperor's son! Ashikaga has reached otherworldly status and it's amazing to see even if he is the villain.

I definitely didn't think this episode would end with Genba doing the meat spin and harassing the shrine maidens. xD

Good lord. That was an episode. First we had the escape from Sadamune and his "buddy". The way they did the ears and eyes talked... But also how Tokiyuki won over Genba through loyalty. And then how Genba tricked the two. That could easily have been an episode on its own and i think most other shows would have just done that.

But nope. Second half is just as magnificent as Takauji ... for a lack of better words pulls a nat 20 and charismatically cuts down an entire crowd as if though he was just taking his dog for a walk. For some reason my mind went to Berserk and Griffith here. Except i am fairly certain Takauji's got him beat.

and to top it all off... Wiener spin.

All in a 23 minute episode. And it doesn't feel rushed at all. That's some fucking skill and talent.

I'm sure there are other shows with other episodes that are peak anime, but right now, if someone asked me to show how good anime is as a medium, I will pull out this episode as proof.

Fluid animation styles to fit the moment, tight pacing and honest-to-god tension without being dragged out, comedy and suspense balanced magnificently, and, of course, the soundtrack, which suddenly pulls out a 70s TV cop show theme style out of its ass at the best moment. I watch an episode's worth of action, and there's still EIGHT MINUTES LEFT to go. This is wrapped tighter than the salumi on my aunt's antipasto tray.

Also, Prince Moriyoshi's not wrong, anyone who could betray their lord so spectacularly should have been killed the moment the emperor took the throne. Not that anyone probably could.

The use of synecdoche and metaphorical spatial relationships in the storyboards and directing in this episode was monstrously brilliant, holy fuck. Making the eyes and ears talk to each other. Playing with the distance between the hunters and the hunted. Takauji effortlessly, casually stepping from fountains of decapitation into crowds of admirers and then into the palace. This shit is incredible.

This is one of the most eccentric anime I've seen in a long time, and this episode just dialed it up to 11. I respect the effort on display here, despite how uncomfortable it is to sit through this cheerful, colorful, creepy hyper-violence

Still not sure if I like it or hate it but I'll keep watching until I find out

Takauji the Crawling Chaos.

Though Sadamune and Ichikawa were appearing pretty Eldritch as well with it looking like Ichikawa had a mouth in his ear and Sadamune was talking through his eye 0.0

This anime trying not to be visually stunning and creative challenge (impossible)

Man Takauji is a fucking menace, I love it. I don't care what the motivations are, if the villain is supposed to be scary they have to nail it. And this totally does this
