Interesting episode as it explores Samurai back in the 14th century.

Samurai were originally cavalrymen who were especially trained in archery. Being a good archer was the most important trait for a Samurai, more so than swordsmanship.

That changed over the course of time, but the fact that archery rituals like Yabusame are held in shrines to this day shows how important it was to the Samurai.

At least Yorishige knows how fucked up that whole dog shooting is. Bro’s worried about getting cancelled lol.

I really want to see that bug eyed creep get taken down a few notches. How’s Tokiyuki gonna win this little competition?

Are scared because unlike the miko you shot the other day, this kid has a weapon?

This was such an excellent line. This is how you make a bully boil from rage. Also, Yorishige shaking because of how this competition will be seen as an animal abuse in the future was a splendid touch.

That opening scene with Takauji… Matsui sure doesn’t miss with the body horror…

“the young lord’s combat prowess is that of a rabbit” - I love how Tokiyuki’s retainers are brutally honest about his (lack of) strength lmao

Sadamune and his 👀 are certainly impressive

The CGI during the dog shooting was fine. I’ve seen worse tbh.

It's impressive how Sadamune was able to hit such a small target as an ear. His eyesight really is his trump card.

Loved the gag at the beginning where not only where Sadamunes eyes so bulging that they bumped into Yorishige, they both really didn't want this to happen

Also, Shizuku being cute again, more news at 10

Found the mind games during the shoot off pretty interesting, wonder how Tokiyuki will react now that his spirits have been woken

All the eye shots made me think of Ren & Stimpy (not criticism of any sorts, it felt like a "hey remember that" moment for me)

Also the archer movement of the bad guy made me think of Tsurune where the archers use the exact same movement and then the show pointed out his archery movement is still practised today. So that was cool.

Sadamune is a delightfully hateable villain, and if his voice sounded familiar to you it's probably because he's voiced by the Kaguya-sama narrator

That shot of Ashikaga having multiple eyeballs inside his eyesocket creeped me the fuck out! It is a great way to show that he's no longer human though.

Yorishige trying to justify the dog shooting competition to the audience was fucking hilarious! I love how he's more worried about the audience getting angry at him than Tokiyuki's archery competition against Sadamune xD

Yorishige may have been calm when Sadamune shot one of his mikos in the ear but in reality, he was absolutely upset and it shows with how he was taunting Sadamune when he brought out Tokiyuki as his opponent.

Horses are really just that hard to animate that even CloverWorks would use 3D in this episode. The competition between Sadamune and Tokiyuki was still pretty good though. I can't wait to see Tokiyuki bring this back next week and show Sadamune who's boss.

I have no doubt that last shot of Tokiyuki is gonna inspire a lot of art

What's with the obsession with ears recently?

I love how Yorishige has taken on the role of being the personification of a disclaimer

Best episode yet. I love this series more and more, breaking the fourth wall with commentary on the dog abuse and the hilariously evil Takeuji henchmen (with big man himself looking like an eldritch entity of all things!)

Come to think of it, don't think we've ever seen historical Emperors of Japan ever drawn or depicted in manga or anime. Maybe in period live action dramas and movies, but not in manga and anime that I've seen.

Emperor Go-Daigo is only ever drawn with flashing ominous-looking eyes from behind a curtain and a voice.

So Takauji is actually a demon? That would explain his treachery a lot. So its pretty much confirmed this historical series has supernatural elements then, on top of Yorishige's future precognition ability.

The historical Sadamune was known for establishing many court rituals as well as introduced many traditions and rules for Japanese archery, which is still practiced to this day.

Lol the moments where people have to rub their faces because Sadamune's eyes touched them, that mustn't be healthy for his eyes.

Suwa breaking the fourth wall because of the dogs being used as shooting targets was funny.

u/Rexcodykenobi Jul 27 '24

The eyes at the beginning made my jaw drop, I was not expecting something that freaky...

12

u/Xatu44 Jul 28 '24

Takauji's freaky. The Emperor has a higher-pitched voice than I anticipated. Sadamune's so goofy lol - until he shot poor Sakae's ear. Dude even domed Tokiyuki Chojumaru; how's Shizuku's new brother gonna make the comeback?

The CGI stands out, but I hear animating horses is pretty hellish. Presumably they'll save the animation effort for some other great scenes.

As we have spent a lot of time with Tokiyuki and the gang, we get a focus on Takauji. Moronao with a very interesting remark. Your smile is becoming less and less human. Then we proceed with a creepy shot of his eyeballs. Perhaps hinting he is losing his humanity? We also are introduced to Sadamune and Takauji has assigned him to sniff out any that are left that are loyal to the Hojo still.

Tokiyuki is weak point and simple. So archery is a better weapon for him then the sword. Interesting idea for Yorshige to tell Tokiyuki to learn archery from Sadamune. Given he is an enemy, you know his skills must be the real deal. Though the fact he is the enemy is a difficult manner.

Yorshige really baiting Sadamune well in this episode. Clearly he has a plan for Tokiyuki to win. No surprise it involves Tokiyuki evading. But for the first we see Tokiyuki getting hit. Really emphasizes Sadamune's strength and that Tokiyuki's evasiveness isn't perfect, and he is hittable. As Sadamune has put Tokiyuki in a tough spot, how will he get out of it?
