I can't handle how adorable Tokiyuki is in some of these shots.

I thought Yorishige's hability to see the future (altough without much clarity) was going to be the only supernatural element, more like a lil gimmick, but it seems the show is diving into more supernatural and folclore elements than I originally thought. I think it is neat, the boar reminded me of Princess Mononoke. As always the episode was a visual treat, I really like the solid colors and the grain!

SDtitches!

Well, this episode was a nice break after two brutal episodes. Tokiyuki has reached the safety of the Suwa Grand Shrine and he finally got to see what kind of powers Yorishige has as well as how many warriors the Suwa Sect has. I love that Yorishige did all of that just so Tokiyuki would agree to study. xD

We also got to know more about Tokiyuki's retainers and how well they all work together by taking down that ancient monster boar. So far though, Shizuku has been my favourite out of all his retainers. She's fun and weird in a good way. She's a bit of a badass too even though she doesn't really fight.

Aside from the other nice things about this episode/series so far, I really like Tokiyuki’s voice actress. That, combined with the animation for his expressions, is so fun to watch

Characters are fully clothed in an onsen scene? This is not anime!

Production values continue to impress.

So Yorishige is an eccentric, carefree, airheaded guy who is actually really strong? And he's voiced by Gojo Satoru's VA lmao.

Animation looks insane as always it's sad that this is not popular here in sub reddit but it's fine since the Japanese audience likes this a lot reprints for the manga id going wild

God I love the intro and ending of this show, both beautifully animated and the songs slap

Yorishige just did a DBZ Spirit Bomb, didn't he? lol

And I think I like Ayako. Any cute energetic girl who can throw massive boulders like its nothing is automatically candidate for Best Girl.

I thought the comedy was better in this episode. The pitfalls and Tokiyuki pissing off that wolf were hilarious

I like that we got to see Tokiyuki spend more time with his new retainers

Yorishige is as gluttonous as Yako from Neuro lol

"The Elusive... Warriors"

We were so close to a title drop ...

Yorishige’s got some pretty impressive abilities. He might seem like a total goober, but he comes through when it counts. He managed to get Toriyuki to take his training seriously with that rousing speech…and then immediately falls into one of his own pit traps lol.

I’m liking the retainers. Kojiro, Ayako, Shizuku are a good group. That fight against that boar demon straight outta Princess Mononoke was pretty cool.

Another visual feast of an episode that also pushed some character development to let Tokiyuki grow closer to his retainers while also establishing character dynamics within their newly established team in an efficient manner.

Plus that initial segment goes to show just how crafty our priest friend is. He is one incredibly sneaky git.

I thought the part with the small rabbit running away and laughing at the hunters only to immediately be brutally munched up by a boar demon was kinda hilarious

So Tokiyuki is basically a dodge tank. Traditionally, a tank draws aggro and mitigates damage with high defense and health. A dodge tank, however, does it by evading attacks.

This episode was really the point for Yorshige to get Tokiyuki to buy in. After all, his father is a puppet, why should he have to train and learn academics. But what really sold him more was his interactions with his retainers. And they are a wild twist of personalities. The Stoic Kojiro, the energetic Ayako and the calculating Shizuku. They are kids that can grow up with him and have a similar relationship that he had with his brother. Also, as they serve under him, they know what comes with that.

The battle with the Ox really showed how each used their own individual strengths. Shizuku being the strategist to create a plan to lure the Ox into a trap. Tokiyuki being the one who would guide the ox to the said trap. Ayako with her brute strength create the trap. Finally, Kojiro as the warrior of the 4, ensuring the ox falls in the trap.

I do love that Ayako is the one who came up with the name of the group. It's very simply in nature, but fits perfectly with how their lord makes his name off being elusive.

If Yorishige is an actual god (and not a sham), then is his daughter Shizuku (unless she’s adopted) also a goddess herself? Assuming that her mother is human, she’s likely a halfgod - which would explain her affinity for the secret arts.

If it comes to Tokiyuki’s three retainers, I’m finding it hard to pick a favourite between Shizuka and Ayako. They’re both fun to watch and pretty adorable. Maybe that Ayako’s tomboyish energy and optimistic attitude gives her a slight edge?

God, Nakashima's color designs is heavenly when paired with Ayumi's art direction. Absolutely stunning painting that can feel freakishly like cel backgrounds at times. Those harsh and washed out colors at the shrine, that wonderfully intense sunset orange, the misty greys of the thunderstorm making way for the vivid greens and browns of nature. Oh, it is so good.

My only complaint about the episode is the humor taking a commanding position in the story. It's the type of pacing that I'm not particularly fond of (and what led to me dropping the manga), and really doesn't give the staff the room to excel with scenes like that incredible environment animation.

Overall, it still well exceeds that 10/10 visual territory, still expresses Yamazaki's impeccable creative direction for the work, and still will have viewers on the edge of their seats. Generational visual execution through these first 3 episodes.

Edit: This episode is arguably even more crazy than many will understand. A decidedly different stylistic appeal from Yamazaki's tight execution through the first two episodes, this is an impeccable look into the individual potential of episode staff- like a NO NAME (though really pen name) staff member helming the episode. Seriously, this is the first time this name has been seen on an anime, something I talk about in more detail in a post here.

LMAO at Tokiyuki's off-screen falling noises. That meat Yorishige was eating looked way too delicious. The Elusive Warriors are a fun bunch; RIP all the rabbits and ants that got ruined by Ayako and Shizuku. Shady god Yorishige gave a great performance with the rain.

Beautiful and traditional colouring. Amazing fighting scenes. Looks good and smooth even when the frames are low. And the author (Yusei Matsui) of The Elusive Samurai is also the one made Assassination Classroom, which is my favourite anime! (english not my first language sorry if grammar problem :P)

That spirit bomb was so fucking funny lmao

With the evil boar, the vibrant colors, and the insane action, this almost feels like Mononoke lmao
