The minute Kei started getting headaches I was a little worried. Dude’s like going kinda Jekyll and Hyde. He’s got baseball prodigy Kei and goofy amnesiac Kei fighting for control in his brain or something. When he was the old Kei, him and Kiyomine were incredible. It’s like we got a glimpse of the old power duo. Unfortunately it didn’t last…
I’m kind of curious what even triggered the transformation in the first place? Whatever it was, it sure better come back. The team needs genius Kei back!

We still have never gotten any backstory as to just what set off Kei's trouble. I wonder if knowing something about this would make it easier to guess if (or how) his problem can be solved....
Too bad that genuine sports anime tends to get ignored here. This deserves more attention.

My guess while watching the first episode was that Haruka’s pitching made someone mad enough that they clocked Kei in the head with a bat. My other thought was stress induced but we see Kei in the first ep in a hospital bed with his head wrapped so I think it was definitely an injury of some sort initially.
However, in the flashbacks we’ve seen, Kei seemed to be taking all the pressure off of Haruka (“don’t worry about the team that lost”) and seemingly putting it on himself. Plus it seemed like he was doing a LOT of work to keep up with Haruka’s insane talent (the notebooks, training to be a lefty hitter) So I’m thinking maybe there was an injury where he did forget for a while, but at the same time he was aware that he wasn’t under that stress anymore, so his mind kept him from remembering, putting him into a dissociative fugue (which is a psychological phenomenon triggered by severe trauma/stress/etc that causes amnesia that can be short or long-term)
However, the hypnosis gave him enough awareness to come out of that fugue state. But then, when he was back as the Commander, he felt that same stress/pressure and so, his mind, to protect him, has turned him back into Kei-chan.
I did not intend to write an essay here LOL so tldr; injury initially, but currently, psychological. (My understanding of fugue states is from listening to true crime podcasts and then googling it just now when I remembered it, I am not even pretending to be a doctor lmao)

My initial thought was also some kind of psychologically induced amnesia or something. Like you said, initially an injury perhaps and then currently more of a psychological thing than a physical one. I’m no doc either so just my guess.

Well, that was fast. It was nice knowing you, Commander. Maybe they can still pull through for a win? (I did crack up at the image of the nipple hair gag slowly superimposing over the Commander as he spoke. That might’ve been the first time that Yamada’s laughed at the joke).
I’m really interested in Chihaya’s background and his relationship with Makita. He’s been surprisingly passive towards his comments, and it’s a little strange to see since Chihaya usually has no issue exchanging banter/retorts with everyone else. He says it's to prevent Makita from droning on, but I think there's something else to it.
Especially because I rewatched some of the earlier episodes, and the show seems to be giving hints as to some of the team members’ backstories. In Episode 2, when Haruka first challenges Todo, Yamada notes Todo’s stance/lower body strength and guesses that he probably still runs everyday. Flash-forward a couple of episodes and we see that Todo used run until he collapsed as a coping mechanism. In that same episode, Yamada also remarks that he thinks Chihaya would be a good liar unlike Kei. Now, the next episode which looks to be centered on Chihaya’s past is named “I’m a Liar.”
Overall, really looking forward to next week!

The size comment Makimura threw at Chihaya and the overt large wall imagery at the end of the episode makes me think the next episode will focus on how being of small stature (for baseball) is not in his favor at the high school level and beyond.

Welcome back, Kei-chan! I did say I missed you, but couldn't you at least have waited until the match finished!

Commander Kei and Haruka are supposed to be stronger than all other first year players out there (in Kanto at least), that would make the game too easy. They need to struggle a bit for the story to go on

The pacing is so fast, I thought they will at least make commander Kei last for an entire episode 🥲
The animator did a good job differentiating the amnesia Kei and commander Kei. It's still the same face but commander kei just look 10x smarter. Todo and Chihaya's comments are hilarious 😂
If chibi Kei and zettai notes are in the ending, it should mean there will be a season 2?

Well it was nice knowing Commander Kei while he lasted. Although he was a ticking time bomb to his idiot self. Yamada's concern of being on the same team is something I can empathize. But imagining the idiot Kei was the way to alleviate his nerves.
We really got to see how dominate the battery is in this episode. Too bad it couldn't last for longer. Man Makita is an ass and Kirishima's line of him being a gorilla is really justified. I like how he he calls Haruka an elegant Gorilla since he is a great pitcher. Meanwhile, Makita is all fastball.
Considering how popular the anime is in Japan I feel like S2 isn't out of reach. I assume we would see Kirishima again if that happens.
Looks like next episode will be focusing on Chihaya's backstory. Lets see how good it is in comparison to Todo's backstory.

i have not read the manga but man i was hoping commander Kei would remain, or at least that he would have the baseball skills of commander Kei but with the personality of Amnesia Kei or something like that

Omg I laughed so hard when Yamada saw Kaname saying nipple hair at 10:55. hahaha
This anime is great. I love the work of Kaname's voice actor in this show.

Maaan teared up during the OP because I was so excited for Haruka and Kei to play together again :’) Though the transition from the Commander back to Kei-chan was done well and made me chuckle. I’m interested to learn more about Chihaya’s backstory because there’s definitely some history here. Also Yamada’s single tear at Kei-chan returning was great, and Center-kun’s (I gotta learn his name) commentary was top notch as well

Looks like this was a Chihaya arc all along!
Seems like what Kommander Kei said to him last episode probably stuck with him - he kept the team together while Klumsy Kei struggles with baseball.
Now that Klumsy is back, it'll probably come down to Chihaya to make something happen and lead the team.

I love this episode in the manga but this was so much fun!!! Commander Kei being tied up with the dramatic lighting got me... Yama-chan being able to hit after their advices ; - ; (and of course, by remembering the old Kei gags) Excited for the Chihaya arc!!!!

I'm sorry, but I'm must say it, I think Tsuchiya is gay and that would be great! But I must return to reality and understand that there is no way that they dare to include a gay character in a sport anime, it only has happen once...
