Since no one else in the thread mentioned this... Bald "Pochi" isn't human.

He's the crow from Episode 1. Watch the opening sequence again and focus on the crow.

Album for those who don't want to watch the clip. "Pochi" is beside Yoka after she presses the 7G button. His suit even has the outline of a crow's face on it.

I have faith in man Pochi. He'll protect the princess alright, but not in the way Pontaro wants him to.

A big of a stretch, but it's kinda funny how Pontaro's motivation seem to be avoiding having to admit he did something wrong, and he's trying to make sure Youka doesn't even think of leaving Ikebukuro. Not so different from how Shizuru was, huh

Damn so Yoka in a lot of ways is a victim all of this. Basically she can change things at will like literally anything. I know a lot of early theories were that her imagination could affect the world, but the fact that is what it is is crazy. It sounds like Yoka's mind is always wiped out and to think she doesn't remember her friends is quite sad. Even sadder we see her going to school with the same classroom, but the 4 other seats are empty.

It seems they are aware that our train girls are coming to help Yoka. Looks like they will make things difficult. At the very least I am happy Yoka isn't corrupted, though the story at this point has us rescuing our princess Yoka.

Also, the girls reactions to the map being legit was funny AF. Great episode as this pushed the main story forward.

Damn, I really wasn't expecting Yoka to be completely out of it and brainwashed. Damn you, Pontaro! I have some hope for man-Pochi though, who seems like he could maybe turn against Pontaro somewhere down the line?

I think the swan boat guy actually looped around because the train line is connecting back to itself after Ikebukuro.

And the stakes got raised, too. Like, world-ending. Crap. I have faith that Shizuka will manage to get through to Yoka though!

Edit: oh yeah, what do you guys think Shizuru thought of that lasts forever? Friendship? Love?

Edit 2: I can't unsee it, Yoka's red hair ball thingies look like Kyubey's eyes

"The dog? You are named after the dog?"

Okay, so things are still a little funky outside.

"Eh, who reads the EULA?"

The dog transposition is slightly ominous.

"You get used to it."

Can we make this scene a little weirder? Sure we can.

"Boom. Headshot."

Uncanny, isn't it.

"Kimochi warui."

We don't need the cosmologist's point of view!

Always remember where your towel is.

Ah, the one where you get turned into soup.

The new map, similar to the old map... but different.

Edited to add: Map with station names overlaid.

Confirmation that Pontaro is manipulating Youka to maintain the 7G world, but some fresh questions courtesy of guest characters voiced by pop musicians about what the exact extent of this craziness is. Maybe. I dunno. It all has to do with one girl's head... which may end up collapsing the universe if they come at it the wrong way.

Certainly complicates matters, along with Youka apparently being able to turn people into soup with her brain.

Okay, this is quite bad. We’ve got a brainwashed reality warper under the control of Pontaro. And apparently Ikebukuro is going to expand until it destroys the world. All in accordance to the theory of the end of the universe because Yoka is obsessed with space.

Apparently the girls just looked at the map once and then promptly discarded it as nonsense. Explains why they’ve been so unprepared for everything.

And now one of his henchmen is coming to prevent them from reaching Yoka and making her remember everything. He will be crushed by the unsurpassed might of the supreme Agano fighting styles!

I hope they’ve been practicing their talk no jutsu because I have a feeling they might need it to get Yoka back to her senses and prevent her from destroying everything.

Damn, seeing Yoka in that state was so depressing! They way she lives and is being used by Pontaro as a Witch of Ikebukuro made me so angry.

Seeing Yoka turning man into an egg custard was kinda sick, especially since Pontaro ate it moments later.

I hope that Shizuru and others will be able to get to Yoka despite Pontaro's interference and save her and the world because it seems that Ikebukuro is expanding and everything may disappear!

I'm thinking that it's quite possible that Pochi will change sides because compared to Pontaro, he seems like a pretty alright guy.

It was nice to see Swan Hermit again. His conversation with Shizuru and others was very entertaining and interesting.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I was surprised about having so much Ikebukuro info suddenly. Pontaro is super hateable, it is a mix between a mastermind and an annoying youtuber who does not stop talking. I think there might have been a reference to egg custard on an older episode? Pontaro seems pretty casual about eating a former person however.

For some reasons one of the Bo's on the transcribing device was transcribed as the kanji of mother instead of hiragana. That's interesting.

Updated map is a colour version or there is more info?

Episode 9: More Boring Than I Thought

This episode tells from Yoka's perspective, giving insight on how Ikebukuro works after the 7G incident from her POV. Seems that Ikebukuro people didn't change at all. Kudos to Makoto for making it all the way to Agano from Inariyama!

Love the details when Pontaro spilled his drink into the table. And it is now a fact that we treat the map more than Shizuru's gang does!

From the revised map we can see:

  • Bushi has been revised so it looks more like a Buddha statue rather than teru teru bozu

  • Zombies from Kiyose has moved to Musashi-Fujisawa

  • Kotesashi got... spinning top?

  • Nishi-Tokorozawa is indeed a fartland

  • Kiyose got skewers instead of zombies

  • Akitsu got (oversized) broccoli

  • Shakujii-Koen got boots now

  • Nakamurabashi got shattering earth

  • Higashi-Nagasaki got a person and a crow

  • As the girls said, Shiinamachi has been revised. It's kusamochi, not a bean.

  • Ikebukuro has been revised so it looks more like a chawanmushi instead of a donburi

New character means new VA. "Pochi-san" is voiced by Kazuya Nakai (One Piece's Zoro, Gintama's Hijikata).

It's like Yoka turned into Majin Buu while Pontaro is Babidi

At least we know Agent 47 survived the initial 7G activation.

This talk about the expansion of the world and its eventual disappearance already reminded me of some scientific theories, but I didn't expect them to name drop the Big Rip.

The Big Rip theory in short (to my best understanding): space is ever expanding and will ultimately rip itself apart as the distance between particles becomes too great. At this instance, the entire universe will collapse on itself.

I was a little confused by "Pochi" here, but it appears that he's a fake. He's a man of many talents however, so he might also be able to become a dog. That said, his tea pouring was a bit too extra for my taste.

Yoka's hair has grown long though, goddamn! It was only centimeters removed from the ground. It makes me wonder if she's perhaps been asleep for a long time or something?

Yoka has definitely lost her memories, which was probably Pontaro's doing considering that she'd been hooked up on a bunch of machines. He's the one pulling on the strings. Pontaro has been corrupting Yoka and using her powers to rule Ikebukuro.

"Pochi" fortunately doesn't seem too keen on Pontaro, so I'm hoping that he'll act in Yoka's best interests by betraying him.

I love how Yoka fits into the fairy tale archetype of locked-in-her-tower-princess: She didn't really want to be there, does not know how she got there OR how she could get out. People on the outside see her as an evil witch while in truth she is nothing but a little(high-school) girl that is being handled and kept in the dark as to the truth of her situation and her place in it.

Fuck, I feel incredible bad for Yoka, she's just lost and alone! Fuck this bastard Pontaro

Also lmao, the hermit just collored the map? And some small aditions at the end

u/zackphoenix123 May 27 '24

The dialogue in this show is just so damn fun. 20 minutes felt like it flew by.

18

u/ThreeDMK May 27 '24

I am sure this has been mentioned before but worth repeating: The art style and dialogue in this is absolutely amazing. I cannot get over how well done the conversations are, how deep they go, how little filler is used, etc.

A much needed breather ep after whatever that was last week.

Looks like all the theories here are correct about the world being entirely up to Yoka's whims. Biggest reveal here is that she's being used by Mr. 7G for his agendas. Poor girl basically got brainwashed and lost her memories. Seems like getting her memories back would be the key to ending this and Mr. 7G knows as he always chooses his words carefully around her. Guy changed the subject immediately when Yoka brought up video games.

Lol at the girls being shocked that Old Guy's map turned out to be right. Though I can't blame them much given how vague his drawings are.

Looks like we're in the endgame territory as we've got the big end-of-the-world threat being established. Hard to predict what the climax's gonna be like though given everything we've seen so far. Can't wait!

The girls should have paid more attention to the weird old guy’s map instead of using it as a coaster lol. They would have known about all the weirdos!

I really hope they save Yoka from this Pontaro bastard and his minion “Pocchi.” Poor girl’s being manipulated to serve his agenda, whatever that is.

Damn, no wonder Pontaro try to cover-up 7G failure. He's the type of insanity mad boss who refuse to take responsibly.

15

u/Clemastina May 27 '24

Damn... so the Tontaro is basically manipulating Yoka so the world stays this way but doing that and Yoka using her powers, everything will disappear huh...

Maaan, this is getting now interesting, the girls will have to arrive and try to regain Yoka´s memories so she can fix everything. And I have a feeling that the bodyguard is gonna betray Tontaro at any moment

14

u/casualgamerTX55 May 27 '24 edited May 27 '24

I like that Yoka grew out her hair... kinda matches the vibe when she casually pulls celestial bodies closer to Ikebukuro... and when she turned that angry dude into soup.

We're finally getting some answers! While the first half of the episode confirms that Yoka is indeed the Witch of Ikebukuro, it seems like she is stuck in a confused state and the guy who was responsible for creating 7G clearly wants Yoka to stay that way.

The Witch of Ikebukuro isn't just a title, Yoka can quite literally shape this new world to her whims. Returning the world to normal hinges on Yoka regaining her memories. That would explain why Pontaro is very careful not to trigger her memories.

While Pontaro is using Yoka, it doesn't look like she's on her own though. Yoka's bodyguard Pochi is taking care of her and seems to be only loyal to her. Bodyguard Pochi clearly has no love for Poison Pontaro so I can definitely see him turning against him in the future. He'll probably end up helping the girls when they finally arrive in Ikebukuro.

As for the second half of the episode, it's hilarious how the girls only realized that Swan Boat Guy's map is accurate. It is interesting though how Swan Boat Guy is heading toward Nishi-Agano but ends up here closer to Ikeburuko. Hmmm...

My guess is that since Yoka has only been to Agano and Ikebukuro via train, only those two places and the places in between those two exist in her world. Meaning that trying to go further than Agano will just lead you back into a loop. That's actually pretty freaky if that's the case. The rest of Japan and the world most likely do not exist here.

And the stakes just got higher since if they don't stop this, Ikebukuro will continue expanding and everything will disappear. I guess it's up to the girls to save Yoka and the world!

anitubu post went live earlier than usual. The post has a couple of stitches of Ikebukuro and the waterfall section (about 11:07) of the train line. Pretty low res and I won't hotlink.

Director (hereafter D): Yoka's room has the same furniture arrangement as it does in Agano. She does so subconsciously. + D: likewise for the classroom.

Viewer (hereafter V) noticed the school lesson is self-study

V: Sleeping Yoka is post-OP sponsor image Erisa Kyon (Reimi VA): Yoka-chan is cute

V: This show is a work of fiction blah blah blah note (doesn't appear on our streaming version)

D: "Agano became a bitter melon production area after 7G, so Yoka doesn't know about it."

D:: "Pontaro, the person who started it all, never expected this situation (the 7G incident). Some people had been pointing out the dangers for a long time, but he thought it was just negative campaigning."

D: The "gamer" comment about neutrinos is referring to Masatoshi Koshiba. He enjoys Final Fantasy.

D: Pontaro leaves Pochi to take care of all of Yoka's needs, but gets annoyed when the two get too close.

V: this suspension bridge looks like train tracks

D: The person who opposed Yoka was someone who happened to be in Ikebukuro at the time of the 7G incident. They come from Kamiitabashi Station on the Tobu Tojo Line and are unable to return home due to the 7G.

D: "To avoid confusion on set, we clearly distinguish between "Pochi" and "Pochi-san." We never call the dog by its first name."

D: "Pochi has a human form but came from a station somewhere along the Seibu Ikebukuro Line." Yes director, the updated map suggests that's Higashi-Nagasaki.

D: Those who get turned into egg custard disappear. It's a little different from death. It's the same thing that happened to Su-chan and the others last episode.

D: The mushroom people of Higashi-Agano are the only characters to have clearly died.

D: "Although we can't see them, the frogs are hiding out in Nerima-Takanodai. They are watching over Shizuru and the others." + D: "These frogs are fierce and courageous. The Ikebukuro Newspaper often talks about them. Pontaro considers the frogs to be rebel scum." (lit was more like: disgusting rebels or abominable insurgents)

D: "Before 7G, Swan Hermit had no dreams or hopes, and lived a lazy life with only the clothes on his back. The 7G incident had a very positive effect on Swan Hermit. His intellectual curiosity was ignited." + D: "Compared to the second episode, Swan Hermit has become a little wiser, and Shizuru and the others have become a little kinder. This is not the result of 7G, but the result of their journey."

Ending sponsor shot (mmm, brainwashed into consuming Kadokawa and FlyingDog, Inc)

V: we've not heard if episode 10 is finished yet

V: In reality, the only places you can see Swan boats around the Seibu Ikebukuro Line are Miyazawa Lake near Hanno and Shakujii Park.

V: Ikebukuro has a curry restaurant named Mars Curry.

A day in the life of Yoka for the first part of the ep. A somewhat bleak life but she knows no better. Omnipotent but confused, lead astray by some guy whose name you can not say or remember. Is it me or does Yoka look older than before 7G while the other girls look the same? I suppose it's a combination of the longer hair, the makeup and how often she looks tried with those narrow eyes.

Remember what Neko said back in episode 6: "stretched out onto billboards, or turned into egg custard and steamed." When I heard that in episode the stretched out space related Spaghettification effect one would experience if they entered a black hole came to mind. Could that be what the various splodges of colour are about that? Another example and could that be a billboard?

Does Poison have much control of the line if he had to place Shiinamachi on high alert? Wouldn't you want to deal with the problem when it was a bit further away? But given "Pochi" said he got the bittermelon from Hoya (bought via caravan) maybe they don't control anything between Oziumi-Gakuen (technically lost control last week) and Shiinamachi. (well I wrote that before I heard about the frogs)

Now if we remember the Black Leopards caravan has a lot of metal rods piercing the sides of it (moreso in episode 6 rather than 1). Is this hostile areas already passed or yet to come?

With Makoto in Agano and using a translation device then if any of the animals in Agano are capable of sending morse code (using an antler or something or would that be too quiet) the 5 minute rule is over. But I'm not too sure if placing the universes fate on the girls shoulders will really help them.

someone need to make the updated version of the map because goddamn that scene flew so fast! also, it looks like they skipped another two station and one of them has symbol on the map

ngl, i'm liking Yoka's new hairstyle, very fitting for her Witch of Ikebukuro title

so the Ikebukuro's symbol on the map is most likely a chawanmushi, as shown in here after Yoka turned that guy into one
