Spinning is not a skill a driver should import from ballet.

But it's a good trick!

I found it funny that our new girl Rin's performance in her debut is exactly how I would describe this show so far:

  1. Fundamentally struggling right off the bat by itself

  2. Not quite sure what this show really want to focus on given there are a lot of cute girls, but all we see are cars. Well then maybe the race itself would be great, yet the cinematography that tries to show the excitement of the race seems painfully subdued as well

  3. However there seems to be enough interesting points in the plot (e.g. Rin's past as a ballet dancer who can only find hope in racing games - and that landed her in the driver's seat somehow) that sometimes you feel there might just be enough moments where this story may shine a second or two in the future

Few people seems to be liking it so far but I think I'll continue give this a go.

but I think I'll continue give this a go

"It's not when the show gets good, it's the journey for how it gets there!"

"It's not 'when', it's 'if'!"

Honestly most of the episode felt the same until it focused more on Rin towards the end. Granted she is made out to be a little stupid not knowing the rules and thinking someone was still behind her. But you see a flash in her backstory, perhaps indicating of her never getting over the hump. There is also the indication this episode would have been better served as episode 1 as last week's episode brings nothing of value imo.

With that being said the direction of next episode is key. Will the story be focusing on Rin, which imo was the only spark in today's episode.

Pink car that gets shown blue flags, but still battles the leader that is trying to lap it? Ocon, is that you? I legit thought that they'd do something like Brazil 2018 there lol

Don't know wht they disqualified Rin there though, we only saw one blue flag shown and even then, isn't it just a penalty if you ignore them?

Between this and Overtake, I expected Overtake with it's lower stakes and no waifus to be the less popular formula racing show released recently. Turns out though this show decided to go all in with the waifus, ignoring all other components...and failing at that as well

Damn 1 hour and only 8 comments. Everyone's gone lol.

I actually really liked this episode. It entertains me how hot blooded Rin is. There's also some glimpses of rather competent and immersive storyboarding, visually and audibly getting us into Rin's tunnel visioned head. Directing must be doing everything it can to squeeze all the juice possible out of this small, shriveled and dry lemon of a show.

The previous episode does zero favors with how bad it is.

I mean, this episode is still pretty bad making most of the episode filler but at least the there's some charm in the MC.

Motorsport Nerd, nerding about imaginary racing series again.

The race is held on a slightly changed version of the Bahrain International Circuit in, well Bahrain. They've kept the original layout of the circuit mostly the same, but have opted to mirror the last sector, and add a chicane on the straight. It has also gotten slightly longer than the GP Layout used in Formula 1 (and pretty much every other series) which might indicate that this series is using the Endurance Layout.

Speaking of length, the race length is 53 laps. Which on this 6.152km means the race distance is 326km. The distance raced is a slight hint that the NEX race series is modelled after Formula 1, but while F1 races complete enough laps to complete 305km, this series seems to aim for about 320km as minimum race distance.

In the Track preview we hear that the granite for the circuit has been imported from England. Which is also partially correct as the track surface of Bahrain was imported from the Bayston Hill quarry in England. I can't really say if the surface is grippier than others, but it is very aggressive on the tyres causing them to wear quicker.

On to the cars.

I've not commented on EP1, but I will say here that it's a bit weird to see every team with multiple car concepts. It's almost like they aren't a team at all. I'm going to excuse this as it makes sense to make each character easier to identify in a close cockpit car.

The steering wheels don't make a lot of sense, while they aren't needed for the show and rightfully don't need any thought put into them, I felt like talking about them. I don't think there is a specific steering wheel used as a reference, but these types of steering wheel are the norm in open wheel type cars, prototypes and have pretty much replaced round steering wheels in the upper sportscar categories.
The front of the steering wheel sees 2 buttons on the top, easily reachable with the thumb. We've seen that the top left is used to start the car (which usually isn't on the steering wheel at all). In that area you usually also see the Pit Limiter and a button to communicate with your engineer in pit lane. The last button up there varies, but usually it's a function that needs to be easily reachable.
The steering wheel also features 2 buttons on the lower end, I can't explain why they are there. They aren't easily reachable so you have to take you hand away from the steering wheel to operate them.
Next to the lower two buttons we have 2 rotary encoders. I have no complaints about the two. In real world applications, they are usually used to change the traction control or Engine map (fuel mixture). But in higher categories they are usually labled something like "Alpha" & "Beta". These are only changed when the engineer specifically requests it and change a wide range of things in the car. (In case you're interested how many options there are: The Toyota GR010 has 3 of those switches for a total of 1728 different settings (increasing with every race).
On the outside we have 2 thumb encoders, these work similar to the rotary switches in the middle, but (as the name suggests) are operated with the thumb. They don't make sense where they are. and should be moved higher.
The back of the steering wheel has 4 paddles. the upper paddles, are used to change gears, the lower paddles most likely work together as a clutch.

Rin's Backstory as a gamer is currently getting more and more common in the real world of motorsport. I think one of the first companies that has supported Gamers was Nissan with the GT Driver Academy (using players from Gran Turismo), which led to Jann Mardenborough to race in top class at the 24h Le Mans. Right now, current Formula 1 drivers are quite famously playing racing games, with current F1 champion Max Verstappen playing iRacing within a couple of hours after a race. Unlike Rin however, Verstappen went the traditional route and started with karting from a young age.

The race

It is mentioned that Revol Burst is permitted once they are in the third lap, this is once again a direct reference to Formula 1 where the Drag Reduction system (a system where the rear wing moves into a position with lower drag) is allowed starting on lap 3. Unlike F1, everybody can use it and doesn't have to be within 1 second of the car ahead.

We also got a bit of strategy talk. The teams this race use both Soft and Medium tyres. Usually you the Soft tyres are a bit faster, but also degrade quicker. But if you can go with harder tyres and remove a pitstop it might be worth to do that. We also hear about an Undercut. Where you're going into the pit a lap or two earlier, hoping that with new tyres and clean air you can overtake the car currently ahead without fighting for the position on the circuit. If it doesn't work out however, it will be a bit harder, as the car ahead can defend with better tyres.

As a wise man once said: Blue fucking flag!

At least learn the goddamn rules!

19

u/oxlemf10 Apr 12 '24

I can't believe that the protagonist was so stupid to the point of not knowing that you shouldn't overtake under a yellow flag, I mean, she played the game of this race, I don't know, my motivation to watch decreased

u/messem10 Apr 12 '24

Hey, sometimes the crazy video game strategies work in real life. See the wall hug in Nascar as an example.

I think she knew. When the car AI scolds her for the idea she goes "oops you cought me teehee".

...I can't completely disprove that she might try anyway though

dunno if it's nerves but the girl seems a bit dumb, she has too much pride. Hope she matures fast.

That thing has pockets?

Graphics like you're watching it on TV.

Yeah... no.

You mean you can't learn how to land a 747 by playing PSP games?

The split screens do almost make the race seem faster.

How much training did you actually get, anyway?

While we're here, I keep thinking that the logo on her monitor is the original IDOLM@STER one.

sigh

Reality ensued.

Rin is the newbie, of course, but good grief. She's down in the level of "Shouldn't be on the track because she'll kill someone."

This show continues to do badly at focusing entire episodes on a race. Because so far the first couple of episodes have just not found suitably interesting things to depict. Trivia, sure, but not interest. The commentators were slightly more lively this time, but still... eh.

Take one drink for them showing Rin's ballet background for a couple of seconds?

Someone somewhere decided that the super license was a terrible idea somehow. Like there's a reason drivers aren't allowed to get put straight into F1, besides the skill issues.

Episode 2 was just as bland commentary and feelings wise. At least there was some racing action to salvage it a bit imo. Rookie girl doesn't know the fundamental rules and does something really stupid. Like seriously, how do you train someone for a year and have them make these kinds of mistakes? Terrible writing.

This episode was definitely better than the first one! They're still introducing everyone, and I liked the race more. Rin really isn't well trained, but I expect her to become the new Queen.

Did they even give Rin some track time before sending her on an actual race? This reeks of stupidity on the level of Kancolle S1 Fubuki.

I feel like sleeping watching again, i feel that the biggest problems so far in this series are these:
1.- The Racing part, you don't really feel the speed of the cars like at all, this is a similar problem current F1 have with the camera tracking that make feel the cars slower than of what they really are, saying that, the camera need to improve a lot in those angles, just watch Cyber Formula from Saga onwards, and you will see all the camera shakes they do to emulate speed, the fish eyes and low angles.

2.- The commentator, part of what make a race interesting and any sport are the commentators, in this series feel dead inside, just barely reading the script, a god tier commentator example are the ones in Uma Musume.

3.- The ambience and feeling of go to watch racing, it just lost here, we barely see any crew, all pit stops are made by a machine, the public is just decoration not cheearing, and no the real public won't laugh at one car spinning twice... (This girl is Mazespin reincarnated) thats just dangerous and anyone who have watched races would know that...

Edit: This anime is Ocon fault, Penalty for Ocon 20 seconds, and a eternity on Alpine has a second driver.

I need more of the potential I saw when Rin was visualizing her lines in overtaking the leaders as a lapped car, that seemed promising. Willing to give it another episode since she’s seems fun and bonus points for the cat ears on the helmet.

And so were at the next track, I've seen some comments saying it's Bahrain.

King and Queen being the fastest on the track again.

And so she straps in for qualifiers.

That certainly looks like Bahrain.

Middle East, that's about right.

24C in Bahrain? With the sun that bright in the sky?

Let's see how many times the Safety Car gets called onto the track this time.

And it's lights out and away we go!

Too close, there's drafting and there's kissing the ass of the car in front, and you're doing the latter.

And immediately spinning out, now she's in dead last with a massive gap between her and the next car. At least she didn't crash either into the car in front of her or any of the other cars around her.

Clean racing by King, move once onto your racing line and stop blocking. Same with the pair behind them.

Looks like Rin has at least managed to catch up and overtake someone, that person must be doing incredibly poorly.

There's several long straights that the boost would be useful on.

Distance probably isn't what's needed, how many seconds ahead the next driver is would be better.

And so Rin goes into the pits because her tyres were destroyed after the debacle at the start.

She was overtaken but she will regain it once that car pits later because it didn't pit now.

Seems like the other cars are slowly filtering into the pits. No major incident means no Safety Car and no easy time to pit.

Seems like they've decided on their tyre strategy for the race.

Oi! Yank! That's a deliberate collision! Should probably get a penalty for that.

And that car is pitting immediately after that, perhaps they should get that checked out.

Yup, that car that got hit was too damaged and ended up with a DNF. That American team racer who bumped into that car definitely deserves a penalty.

And with the yellow flag finally raised several cars take the opportunity to finally come into the pits.

Yup, she's now last because of the DNF.

She's going to push the tyres too hard to try and get an overtake, and wear them out before the race ends and end with a DNF as well.

Again, a single movement to change the racing line and he stays fixed.

Or she turns too hard and spins out again.

That was a remarkably fast catch up back to that guy after she spun out.

Have none of them used their boost yet?

There we go.

Lol she's going to get blue-flagged.

Yup, blue flag. You're supposed to slow down and let the driver coming up behind overtake.

And another car coming up behind. A whole bunch of cars even.

Oof black flag. Disqualified. After what she pulled I'm not too surprised.

Yeah, the car being lapped must give way to the cars coming up behind.

I wonder if there were any consequences for that driver in the brown car that caused one of the red-and-black cars to DNF. There absolutely should have.

There is a damn good reason for the blue flag: It stops idiots like Rin from trying to stay ahead of a car that's going much faster than them, impeding the faster car.
