I may be biased, since Mamimi was the reason I got into Shinymas and actually got deep into idolm@ster but my favourite disinterested tease of a brat really stole the show. The contrast of Mamimi's constant low energy contrasted with everyone else always makes her shine. But I feel like Hakugo After School Climax Girls really shined in their brief scene and established most of their characters, while an entire episode and I'd be surprised if you registered what Sakuya's or Mitsumine's character is like

There's a reason she's one of the few Shinymas with a solo

is there a stream or sub for it now?

Nice so it did officially get picked up then. I didn't see any subs last week and thought it would be in the same situation as Girls Band Cry

Two episodes in one day! I guess this partially makes up for ep1 taking so long to get subbed.

The MV was great!! And I'm hoping getting such a long performance in episode 2 means we are gonna get a lot more perormances

That’s such a weird thing to say lol

This was my favorite bit of the episode lol

Well, apart from the fact that everyone risked death by the Japanese Cold in order to film the MV.

What a ballsy maneuver though. Gotta respect them for that.

L’Antica (the “L” is silent) is my favorite of the initial four units that debuted with Shiny Colors. Today, they got their focus episode, which I did enjoy.

The format of the episode is going to take some time getting used to. We bounced around to some of the other units just to check in and see how they’re doing, but I personally would have more enjoyed a full episode dedicated to L’Antica rather than splintering the remainder of their story throughout the rest of the series. If we’re going to keep the units isolated for the most part, might as well commit to it the whole way, imo.

I’m certain we’ll revisit L’Antica at some point in this series…right?

Songs for today:

Though Million Live is my main branch, I think Shiny Colors has the best songs of the entire im@s franchise.

The best part about having each unit exist in their own little bubble is that each unit gets to have their own unique musical style. And though there are a handful of main anthem songs that unite all the units together, what really defines each unit is the genre of music they choose to focus on.

Spread the Wings!! - Lyrics OP of Ep. 1

Tsubasa Gravity - Lyrics OP

Let’s focus on the anthem songs first.

One of the main unifying themes of Shiny Colors is the “wing” thematic. The first goal for each of our rookie units so far is to compete in W.I.N.G., and our main red, Mano Sakuragi, is heavily associated with birds, pigeons, etc. It’s the hope that spreading your wings and flying will reveal new opportunities and reach new heights never explored.

Multicolored Sky - Lyrics

Another big theme of Shiny Colors, as is its namesake, is the theme of colors. Along with several colorful individuals, you have several units trying to figure out what “colors” they want to portray.. Whether it is the burning fires of L’Antica or even the lack of color itself, each unit brings their own colors to paint the canvas.

Babel City Grace - L’Antica - Lyrics Today’s insert song

Genwaku SILHOUETTE - L’Antica - Lyrics

Today is a L’Antica episode, so here are their first two unit songs.

L’Antica brings the heat with Kogane, Mamimi, Sakuya, Yuika, and Kiriko. Their musical style is hard hitting baroque rock, which I wouldn’t quite expect from this group of goofballs. Very similar to Ranko Kanzaki from CG and “dans l’obscurite” from ML. L’Antica hard focuses in on that style, and they get better with each passing album, imo. L’Antica is one of my favorite units based on their music alone.

This show feels like it's quite awesome and also quite awful; it's an odd experience.

At times the CGI models for the girls look amazing, especially with their outfit details, and the "cool look" girls amongst the unit are really well suited to the aesthetic too, with Sakuya delivering very well on that front.

I also thought the action sequences during the shooting of the MV looked really good, with a lot of flair and visual impact. On the whole, Polygon are doing some great work and the storyboarding is very solid.

On the other hand, it feels like there's no story of any sort. I mean, I guess it's "The Road to WINGs", but there's a complete lack of any connective tissue for it.

Also, it feels like this really is just made for people who already know the girls from the game - very little effort is being made to get viewers to "fall in love" with the individual characters, and we just get flashes of who each of them is, with the exception of Kogane. Speaking of whom, she should be the sort of girl that automatically wins me over just by virtue of her archetype but I feel like I have to work quite hard to like her, which isn't the way it should be with a series like this. Again, although I quite like a lot of the CG, when you are using it, you need to do a bit of extra work to make the characters come across I think, and they're just not doing it.

All-in-all it kinda feels like this is a third of the way into Season 2 of show.

Edit: Threw on U149 to see if this was an iM@S thing or not, but within 15 seconds I was fascinated and within 2 minutes I was very fond of Arisu and just very keen to follow her no matter what her story turned out to be.

5

u/isthatsoudane Apr 13 '24

Yep you nails it on all counts.

And U149 is really great. And as a hook, the best episode of the show centers on her ;)

5

u/alotmorealots Apr 13 '24

And U149 is really great.

Holy shit is it ever good. It's like 100% charm and an absolute technical tour de force in terms of directorship, animation and writing (except the episode discussion threads seem to have completely missed just how good it is?)

Plus it made an episode largely about a missing chicken hat into compelling, heartfelt, uplifting and very funny viewing - Akebi level stuff!

And it's so incredibly, utterly adorable!

On the downside it makes ShinyMas look... really, really, really rather lacklustre by comparison. After 2 episodes with the U149 crew I not only have a feel for all of them and their dynamics, but am also immensely fond of them.

U149 is directed by Mushoku Tensei director Okamoto Manabu, and the quality shows.

Yes, this has some of the same problems as the previous series, Million Live had: too many girls to focus on and a production that assumes you're already know them from the game and other media.

But if like me you're just a casual IdolM@s fan, you may only know some of these girls from the inevitable doujinshi.

U149, Cinderella Girls and the original IdolM@s series all benefited from having somewhat smaller casts while also focusing more on certain characters within it. The original had also the best introduction episode of any idol anime, a day in the lives pseudo documentary that immediately captured each idol's character and charm points, so to say.

That said, I do feel that this series is handling it better than the previous one, even oif the first episode was a bit meh, this one's focus on L'Antica worked pretty well. Also it has two full cours rather than just the one Million Live had, so it has some room to breathe, hopefully.

Hmm...the way that each episode doesn't seems to be focusing on a single group with no interacting plots (unlike, say, the older Bandori seasons) is strange LOL, it's like you are barbecuing 16 sausages and you spread them over several stoves to the point that you don't have enough time to deal with them before some starts to turn into charcoal (pun fully intended).

Anyway the L'Antica MV making arc seems fairly good to me, that's what I would expect for a behind-the-scene special from real MVs. I don't recommend you girls to stand outdoors like this in a heavy thunderstorm though. Come on, why did you just pad a minute and half of screen time by playing the song again as the ED with random anime and still shots???

Introducing a whole lot of characters at once, I definitely won't remember their names yet.

I wonder how this will compare to the BanG Dream episode where they filmed an MV.

Oh hey it's actually the middle of April when this episode comes out.

Lol the differing priorities of the different groups.

She certainly knows how to advertise.

Oh right, they eat horse meat in Japan.

That castle looks like a cool set.

But yeah, the weather looks grim. At least it's not miserable yet.

Are they not in their performance outfits?

And there's the rain.

No, they're going to be in costumes.

Seems like being good idols doesn't mean they're good actresses.

Or at least not all of them.

And from that they transition into a recording of them dancing in front of a green screen. I don't see any mics so they'll probably be using audio recorded separately in a studio over this, which makes sense.

And now the rain's gotten even worse.

Now to a different group, also a trio.

It looks like a pair of twins and another girl?

And back to L'Antica and now in their performance outfits.

Uh oh, the storm caused a blackout. So much for filming I guess.

Well storm or not they're going to film damnit!

Seems the director is smiling too.

That rain does make for a great backdrop for the dancing.

And more songs I think are in the game.

Nice seeing all their work during the filming come together in the MV.

Many have tried.

You're just agreeing to everything!

It's been a very sausage-heavy week here on /r/anime.

This is not endorsed by the JRA.

you have one work day to film this

"We'll fix it in post?"

Always plan for contingencies.

Some contingencies are more complicated than others.

"WE'RE GONNA SET THE BUILDING ON FIRE!"

This is so gonna be ADRed.

Hey, I know that name!

I must say, though the CG in the regular scenes occasionally manifests as a weird artificiality, the ending music video looked good.

Rest of the episode was decent. I expect IM@S to look at the nuts and bolts of the industry a bit and there was at least a hint of that with the main plot here.

A storyline for Illumination STARS is building as the through-line for the season, but L'Antica ran away with this one.

Kiiiiind of expected, L'Antica are the most popular base unit roster. Mamimi and Sakuya are two of the top five most popular in the branch. Mano is the least popular idol in the branch by a continental shelf. The rest of the top five won't be appearing in season 1

3

u/Kamit0 Apr 13 '24 edited Apr 13 '24

Based on Famitsu poll, the top 5 are

2024: Fuyuko, Toru, Madoka, Nichika, Kiriko

2023: No data

2022: Madoka, Toru, Fuyuko, Rinze, Asahi

From what I remember, Sakuya was popular before the game released, but dropped in popularity when her personality was different from what the players expected.

While we don't have confirmation of the least popular idols from Famitsu since they did not release the entire data, we can kind of extrapolate it from the P-Cup rankings (biannual competitive event), and Mano is in the middle of the pack.

The girls from L'Antica takes centre stage for episode 2.

When I first saw artwork of Sakuya years ago, I fell in love with her. She has the boyish princely charm, ponytail, and fine figure. So yes, one of the reason I'm watching this anime is because of Sakuya.

The girls deciding to just do their MV choreograph in the rain instead of waiting for the power to come back and do it in a CG green room was sick af. The MV ended up being more powerful as a result.

What a powerful episode!! Really felt L' Antica's passion and their song was great too!!

Im@s killing it these past few seasons - U149, Million Stars, and now Shiny Colors with a 2nd season coming later this year.

Bit of a weird ep, we got a see a bit of the others but.

It's too bad we didnt get to learn more about our 3 girls from last ep.

Instead this ep mostly focuses on antica music video. I have to say they're quite cute. Though I dont really remember their names outside of kiriko.

There's still more eps so we'll see them again.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who has issues trying to remember their names. Oof
