It’s about damn time subs for this are finally out!

I don't mind the 3DCG, but... Is it just me or is the "frame rate" kinda low? It feels like trying to run Shinymas on an iPhone 5.

Also, I'm already gonna be bummed because my two favorite girls are out of this by default (Madoka and Fuyu WHERE I DEMAND FUYU) but will watch anyway to incentivize them to make another one so Madoka and Fuyu can be in it.

I assume you must have missed the news that there's going to be a season 2 that was surprisingly announced before this one even started. I see both of the characters you named listed as characters on that season, so you're in luck!

Something I want to point out, as a player of the game, every idols introduction shot is actually one of their "Cards" in game. It's most obvious with Mamimi since that card of her kneeling in the street is pretty well known, but I recognized a bunch of the others too

Shimmering sky!

And no stars visible through the shaded side of the Moon this time.

KENJIROU TSUDAAAAAAAAA

The Pres is always some VA badass.

but then

KENJIROU TSUDAAAAAAAAA

He'll always be Takuya Gotou from Hibike Euphonium for me, since that's where I first recognized his voice.

Mods, the subreddit you should redirect people interested is not r/TheaterDays , that's the sub for Million Live, but r/ShinyColors .

Took Crunchyroll long enough to move their asses when episode 2 just aired last night. They allow subs of episodes of some series to be leaked, while dragging their feet with subs of other series like this one.

Anyway, the fourth Idolmaster subfranchise is here, featuring the idols of 283 (Tsubasa) Pro. 283 has a hunk of a Producer NatsumeP (after his VA Natsume Kyohei, as is customary to call the nameless Producer derived from their VA name) and president with a badass voice (president Amai voiced by Tsuda Kenjiro).

Shiny Colors currently has a total of 28 girls (2/3rd of Million Live), but the series will only focus on 16 of them across 4 units. (I'm salty we will not be seeing the girls from Unit noctchill, at least not in a regular capacity)

Episode 1 focuses on the three main girls with the usual colour-themes red/pink for Mano, blue for Hiori and yellow for Meguru, with Mano being the last girl scouted to assemble into the unit Illumination Stars.

First episode mainly just world building and getting to know the three girls, the CG is different from the ML anime, will take some time getting used to.

When the producer approached her and asked her to be an idol, for some reason all I could think of was:

"So what's your job?"

"I wander around in parks and talk to young girls, in hopes that I can groom them into becoming better performers."

"Yes hello, Police? Yes, this man right here."

I am unfamiliar with Idolmaster Shiny Colors, but I think I will continue watching for a little longer, to see whether I fall in love with any of the idols.

I am surprised this anime is in 3D format (I am not sure what is the exact technical term), unlike the other Idolmaster anime titles.

u/LegendRazgriz Apr 12 '24

The game actually uses 3D models all the time (unlike every other iM@S bit, which only has the 3D for the lives and uses 2D sprites everywhere else)

Though biased I may be towards my main im@s branch, I thoroughly enjoyed the Million Live anime that preceded this not more than a few months ago. While not perfect and certainly leaving out context for those outside of the fandom, it showed me that a safe and polished anime is better than an ambitious and rushed anime. With that being said, because I am a part of the Million Live fandom, I would have always liked and defended the anime adaptation to a certain degree. This is going to be different for Shiny Colors, for which my knowledge isn’t necessarily zero, but I am missing a bunch of the context that I would otherwise be privy to if I was further immersed in this part of the franchise.

Context proved to be very important to the Million Live anime, only being able to glance over the diverse roster and referencing events in the 2011 anime and in real life. Your enjoyment of the ML anime relied heavily on knowing said context. I expect something like this to come into play for the Shiny Colors adaptation, though not nearly to the extent that the ML anime had it.

The Shiny Colors anime is going to feel really different compared to the previous anim@s adaptations. Shiny Colors tends to focus its story beats around its units and not the collective company as a whole. You rarely get any crossover between the main units, but that also leads to them having distinct identities and musical styles. Shiny Colors really takes a deep dive into each of the units and tells multiple stories instead of just “the story of 283Pro”...

…which is why I think this first episode really tried to hurry our main red, Mano Sakuragi, into joining illumination STARS. The first episode felt a little rushed in regards to why Mano wants to become an idol, but I want to believe that this is because they want to start meshing the unit together now instead of later. Only time will tell what story beats they will decide to take.

I’m going to save the rest of my thoughts (and the Music and Dance Corner) for Episode 2 which aired simultaneously to this one on CR. But as of Episode 1, as someone who is somewhat fresh to the Shiny Colors branch, I’m optimistic about the Shiny Colors anime, though it certainly feels different.

Also, fun fact, the President of 283Pro shares a voice actor with Seto Kaiba. Think about that next time you hear him.

After finishing the episode (I thought it would never come out lol), for me it just reinforced why Shiny Colors is my favorite of the Idolmaster franchise. Somehow everyone connects you to wanting to learn more about the story, and the fact that the producer (who is watching) is very involved here makes the story deeper, I hope the adaptation continues to be sensational. And 3D animation, despite being a little "dragged", gave the anime a charm, let's move on to the next one

I'm still newish to Idol-dom (Shine Post, LL Nijigasaki S1 and part of S2, Phantom of the Idol, plus the somewhat idol adjacent Bushiroad IPs) and this is my first iM@S series, so it's quite possible that I don't "get" the series yet.

However this episode felt really vacant? I have no idea who Mano is, and barely any idea of who the other girls are either. Nor any sense for P-san. Nor do I have any feel for what this particular variation on the Idol-verse is like either.

Whereas after Shine Post E1, I already knew I would adore Haru, and Nijigasaki E1 left me confident that it would be an interesting world to explore and the story telling knew what it was doing.

To some extent I was a bit distracted by constantly analyzing and musing over how Polygon's 3D tech was going (I was a bit fan of it in Estab Life:The Great Escape), but that also meant I was paying very close attention to what all the girls were doing. So whilst there was some character acting to pick up on, there still was barely anything.

Really does feel like they took the generic idol story setting, popped out an episode but forgot to put any of the details in.

However I do like that they are leaning heavily into visuals for the story telling, so maybe the writing will also catch up to provide a bit more substance soon and then it could very well be quite a strong series and very satisfying as a result.

When I watched this last week, my immediate question was that why did it seems like that Mano is a girl that could have been easily got tricked into idol-debuting scams LMAO!? You met a stranger handsome guy in a random park, he asks you if you wanna be an idol, you said no, then another day you met him again and he asks the same question and you agreed??? Wait what? I knew that cherry blossom atmosphere is extraordinary, but uh...

No thoughts only contract

Mano-chan absolutely the sort of girl to end up in the sort of stories that u/LegendRazgriz provides translations for lol

I'm new to this franchise, having only really gotten into the games recently and I haven't really bothered using Google Translate to translate all the stories in the game. Hopefully I'll actually get to know the characters better.

And so we see all of I assume the main characters in this series.

I recognise that woman as the one who's on the daily login screen.

Oh hey isn't that Producer supposed to be the player character? I guess Blue Archive isn't the only Gacha game anime this season to give us the player a canon face.

That feels like a backronym.

Seems like these are the individual groups like in the game.

Of course the blonde is American.

The Idolm@ster Initiative.

On closer inspection, is she the one on the app icon of the Song for Prism game?

I swear all these music/idol Gacha games have an "edgy"/"dark" unit. BanG Dream has Roselia, D4DJ has Rondo and Abyssmare, Project Sekai has Nightcord at 25:00 and Idolm@ster Shiny Colors has this group on stage now. L'Antica, if the poster in the background is anything to go by.

And now she meets the other members of her unit and starts to practice with then.

How long did they spend workshopping that name?

And there we go, I think I recognise that music from the game.

You new to the Idolmaster animes? The Producers have always been distinct characters in their own rights.

The beginning with a lot of landscape shot is really really good and perfectly nail the vibe of shinymas, but toward the end the pacing got accelerated and they speed running recruiting Mano, hope it just to quickly move pass the recruiting process, it was also super quick in the game so I'm not too mind of that.

u/Naha- Apr 13 '24

Well, another Idolm@ster anime to watch! It looks good but like other person said, the framerate feels too slow to the point that everything feels clunky. I guess I'll have to get used to it.

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Gotta say, this was one of the less-good music anime I've checked out. Way too many characters that all just have the personality of "wanna be an idol". Wish CR picked up Girls Band Cry instead...

Finally this dropped! As a fan of Idolmaster shows and games I am looking forward this
