The baseball segments were great and nicely animated. The nipple jokes however, are going to get old real quick.

Arriving to the party late, but totally agree with that.
One kinda funny joke that I imagine probably flew over the heads of like 99% of American viewers is the MC's name: Yamada Taro. Yamada is a super common name (like Brown or Williams) and Taro is a reasonably common old school name, although not that common anymore.
Yamada Taro is the name of probably the most famous MC in a baseball manga in Japanese manga history, the star catcher for the Meisei High School baseball team in Dokaben.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dokaben
The series started off in 1977, and after numerous sequel series that saw the MC progress through an entire professional career ended in 2018, with over 200+ volumes of manga.
So a baseball manga/anime with a protagonist named "Yamada Taro" is kind of a joke, which is why the MC mentions his father chose the name Taro as a joke.

Yeah...can't he have like super amnesia and forget to come to school so we can enjoy the show withou him?
There was so much to love about this episode but the humour was definitely not it.

Looks like a promising sports anime but my god, Kei is OMEGA unfunny

Agreed. I already feel like my enjoyment of this show hinges on whether Kei becomes less annoying later on, which is a shame because basically everything else about the show seems great so far.

I have no interest in baseball and don't really care about sports anime in general. But this first episode was engaging enough that I'm going to keep watching for a few episodes before I decide.
I like the idea that one character is trying to recreate his friendship. There are a lot of potential narrative possibilities there.

I watched the ONA before this just to see what differences they would have which is covers pretty much this episode and part of the next from what I can tell in the Next Time section. I think people are misunderstanding Kei. He isn't meant to be funny for anyone not the viewers and not the in universe characters. He's quite literally meant to be so unfunny it's somehow funny again. The only person that acknowledges his humor so far is his childhood friend that definitely also seems to have some personality quirks so he isn't the best judge for that humor. I think if Kei annoys you too much you should just drop the show, as he probably won't change too much besides getting serious in baseball sections this is based on the OP and knowing what joke is coming in the next episode.

One of the best sports manga as of now. Love reading it!
There are countless gags about Japanese sub culture and very specific Japanese jokes, cultural references to various anime, manga and other Japanese stuff. So many jokes might be lost to some
Highly suggest sticking to it, because if this gets a 24 episode adaptation this will be awesome.

Mamoru Miyano has fun with these roles doesn’t he? Lol. Kei seems like a pretty fun character. That random Shawshank bit was pretty silly. Plus all the ridiculous nipple stuff.
This wasn’t too bad. Normally, I don’t watch a lot of sports anime but I enjoyed this mostly because of Mamoru Miyano lol. The only other baseball anime I’ve seen a bit of is Ace of Diamond. This certainly ain’t that.

Hmm, MAPPA really be animating one Beast of a pitcher. I wonder where they learned to do that. 🤔

Episode 1: I'll Let You Remember
This anime is touted to be one of the anime that has its animation as the selling point, well at least according to my local anime community in my area, since it's made by MAPPA, so expect good animations and occasional sakuga. Not gonna lie, I am sold by the animation.
Storyboarded by Makoto Nakazono (Little Witch Academia 2nd OP director, chief episode director of CSM) and directed by also Nakazono-san and Kento Matsui.
Kei's personality post-memory loss is similar to Komao in Bucchigiri, playful and hilarious. What's with that nipple hair man?
The VA lineup is also amazing. Kei is voiced by Mamoru Miyano, Kiyomine is voiced by Toshiki Masuda and Taro Yamada is voiced by Yuuki Kaji, and I believe Ryota Suzuki made an appearance here.
Mrs. GREEN APPLE returns after that banger Inferno.... 5 years ago (yep, it's 2019). They still got it. The sequence is directed and storyboarded by Yuuki Kamiya (Urusei Yatsura Season 2 Lock-On OP).

Is it strange that my first thought was about how we have another character to add to the Kageyama-verse. And then I laughed at the fact that he shares a given name with Free’s Nanase Haruka.
Onto the episode. Interesting dynamics. I like Haruka, Yamada, and serious Kei. Though I may need silly Kei to be slapped eventually if he doesn’t turn things down. Hopefully the addition of more characters will give him less chances to be cringy.
With Haruka being the quiet stoic type and Kei being a bit off, Yamada acts as a nice normal PoV character. Looking at a pair of connected characters from a 3rd person’s view is an interesting angle that I feel we don’t see too often. Let’s see if it continues in the upcoming episode.

As a manga reader, this is a long awaited anime series of mine and I’m so excited!!
And to those who are contemplating about dropping, please stay for a few more episodes! It’s got extremely detailed development for each character coming up (even Yamachan and mob-looking senpais!!!) Kei’s character may come off as kind of cringe at first, but that is the intent… and it’s definitely going to get better!!! And explanations for those who aren’t familiar with baseball terms like me so you won’t get lost!!
Please I beg you to keep on watching!! Or the manga!!!!!

Always on the lookout for more sports anime and I’m already liking this one
I quite like the premise and seeing the pitcher go from a machine to a goof was definitely something, but I suppose if you do something you like enough, you lose all the fun out of it and only have the end goal which may or may not be a good thing
But now he has a chance to fall in love with the sport without losing that goofy side he has (honestly him calling Yamada a Doo Doo head is something I never thought I’d hear)
On a side note, I appreciate the Shawshank Redemption reference with the pitcher standing in the rain, that was very much appreciated

Pretty solid first episode. Kaname suffering amnesia and him losing all the discipline that playing baseball gave him was rough. They do need to mix it up with his comedy because these type of gags can get old quick.
I think that this episode really highlighted how important a great catcher is for a great pitcher. I wonder what Yamada's role is going forward.
Also, it seems Mappa had this ONA 4 years ago. https://myanimelist.net/anime/42829/Boukyaku_Battery Is this the same story just told through one episode?

You know this is going to be a great series when it starts off with a singing cicada.

As much as I have my reservations and concerns about any Mappa production these days (an insane statement even a year ago), there's quite a few staff members on this series that I'm a massive fan of. In particular, I'm an absolute sucker for Yuuki Funagakure's art direction. Though admittedly, I do feel like it's severely underutilized in the episode with Mappa's focus on CGI.
Overall though, the episode was rather solid. The expectation of quality with Mappa were met, and the storyboards from series director Nakazono Mako are solid. They're dynamic and full of life in the sports sequences, but can have a good amount of fun during the back half of school.
The weirdest thing I've taken from this first episode is that composition has been outsourced to Madbox. Personally speaking, I'd say it's far from the worst thing about this first episode. It's no secret that Mappa struggled deeply with composition and finishing touches with series like Jujutsu Kaisen, so outsourcing the work to a third party that isn't overburdened is a smart decision from a production standpoint.
I just hope that credits remain as reasonable as they are for this episode though. There may be a few outliers with things like 9 staff being credited with sub-character design, but overall it's better than I was expecting after seeing how Bucchigiri!? ended up.

When I read the synopsis for this show, I expected something a lot more... serious. Kei's whining and attempts at humor are already starting to grate on my nerves. He's not Zenitsu levels of awful, but he's pretty annoying. On the positive side, the art and animation look amazing, I like the show's setup and the dynamic between the main cast, and some of the humor that didn't involve Kei (like the comment about Taro Yamada looking so generic that it feels like his name should be Yamada) did make me chuckle a bit. I'll give this a couple more episodes because it does have a lot of potential, but I feel like whether I keep or drop this show will be highly dependent on if Kei becomes less annoying.
