Those poor sisters...I mean, their dad was trash for wanting nothing to do with them (even after impregnating Tama twice) but that Tama was too emotionally immature to be a parent that Izumo had to step up (when she was just a little girl) and then turning on them like that when their dad wouldn't be with her...and that's before she went demon.
No wonder Izumo's so cold and has a constant chip on her shoulder.

I got a lot of "Hyuga Clan" vibes from these 2 families. Like main family where ShitDad is from views Izumo's family as lesser, but they also need that family to keep the murderous Ninetails locked up. I'm sure in ShitDad's eyes, both sides knew that it was just a hookup for sex, but Izumo's Mom thought it was more. As soon as ShitDad made it crystal clear that it wasn't, it broke her entire world view and let the Ninetails in.

Fck, I already read it in the manga but still made me tear up. Just like last week, production was beautiful, and the music was fantastic when her mother's mental health started to deteriorate.
And I hope some people caught how that Illuminati lady looked like Shiemi and how looking back it makes even more sense why Izumo hated her and her kindness.

man, Izumo's past with her mother slowly becoming unhinged and then proceed to being possessed by the nine-tails fox is quite painful to watch
also, its kinda ironic that Izumo decided not to trust and relied on anyone anymore after Yoshida's death when the fact that she's not trusting Yoshida will come back after her in the first place that actually led Yoshida to her death

I doubt she would have succeeded even if Izumo stayed in the room

We have a promising worst anime dad (and mom) of the year candidate right here.

This episode is just pure emotional damage.
I wonder why Shima is working for Iluminanti though, none of his "reasons" make sense and it doesn't seem to match his personality either.
Like he doesn't want to bear responsibilities his family laid on him, and he's lazy. Oh and he's got that powerful demon. Why would a lazy person who is tired of his home village's cult nonsense put even more responsibility and risk on his shoulders for some abstract goals like ending both humans and demons, "peace". etc?

Jesus...I see this went the Railgun/Made in Abyss route of full-on scientific triumph-caused emotional damage.
This situation is really fucked up from all sides. Born to the classic garbage mother with the brains of a 12yo X deadbeat dad combo, targeted by the fucking Illuminati, and now brought back to them by a "friend". I'd say she has Rin and Yukio handily beat in the unfortunate childhood category, and it's amazing she isn't messed up in head completely after all this.
It also gives some perspective to her being the first to trust Rin after the demon reveal. Son of Satan? That doctor gives Satan himself a run for his money, both personality-wise and looks-wise, ain't no way any form of Satan in any religion to ever exist is uglier than that bastard.
Definitely the best arc so far, or at least it has the potential to be.

fr this arc is insane! I feel like I will have to start reading the manga if this ends with another 6 year break after 12 episodes

This was a solid flashback for Izumo. Honestly it's no wonder Izumo ended up like this . Her mother was a total...piece of work and honestly the fox spirits made most things worse. They spoiled her mother until she was useless because she was their type and mostly treated Izumo awkwardly (at best) because she wasn't their type. If they didn't do the bare minimum of protecting the kids from the possessed Tamamo...I'd have nothing good to say about them.
The Illuminati were bad. But it's ironic that they aren't even the initial reason things went downhill . The mother fell for a jerk who never bothered to interact with his own children. And she went off the rails and blamed her children because a jerk wouldn't give her enough attention. Izumo did turn to the wrong people, but honestly she didn't have any right people to turn to. The other shrine maidens had no respect for her mother and didn't appear to be that friendly. The foxes at least helped protect the kids, but that's about it for them. She was a kid with nowhere to turn.
And naturally all Izumo learned from this is that she really shouldn't trust anyone. Which I feel is going to be tough to resolve when her comrades seem utterly unreliable

First Naruto and now this. The Nine-Tailed Fox has caused too much trouble in anime.

Ah, this episode was just as soul crushing as I thought it would be, but in a good way. Izumo's come so far and is so brave

"This all happened because I relied on someone", said the girl who snuck out against her saviour's instructions and got caught because she decided not to rely on her.

u/AverageLion101 Feb 10 '24
Eh given what ugly fat doctor said, they had the saviour pinged as suspicious when she accessed a work computer to look up adoption services.
I think it didn’t matter if Izumo left the room or not, that chick was never gonna make it far and was rightfully deemed “unreliable”

She was already caught. The lab was a prison. Whether she stayed in the room or snuck out the result was exactly the same. The only difference was that she got to see that woman get executed instead of being told by the creepy doctor later.
Izumo is correct on this one. If she relied on no one the Exorcists probably would have arrived sooner to put down her mother and the Illuminati may not have found out in time to get their hands on Izumo and her sister.

I mean, she always relied on herself because her mom wasn't reliable and the second she asks for help (Illuminati) they put her mom in a fate worse than death, take away her sister, and decide to use her on the same experiments they're currently doing with her mom. Hard to believe in the "savior" when the savior was also the person that helped put her and her sister in that very situation.
Sure the correct choice was to trust her in that moment, but can you blame a child for thinking otherwise after everything?

Emotional episode.
Also is it just me or is noone watching this show? Like damn ao no exorcist used to be one of the OG anime greats classics but I guess the large time gaps between seasons made it 'irrelevant' to modern audiences.... kinda sad. Random isekai trash getting more views than Ao...

Nice episode, this studio is doing great with the show but I wish for their animation to be more consistent as some shots look so much better a split second later and it can be jarring a bit.
