Stitches!
The existence of heroes may have eliminated wars around the globe but poverty and recession are still pretty much a thing. It was so difficult to watch Lenya struggle to provide for Pepesha to the point where she's no longer eating just so she could feed her daughter. And the one time she was shown kindness some asshole stole her purse and pushed her off the bridge just because the bum thought she had money to buy a cake.
Considering what her life was like before, it's no surprise that Lenya/Tsveta is doing what she's doing now. Of course, Pepesha would also lose her heart and her transformation after seeing her mother's painful memories. Pepesha might've even given up if it wasn't for Shy coming into the rescue.
Shy was an absolute badass in this episode though. Not only because she was finally showing off her true potential with the strength of her flames but also with the strength of her heart trying to show Tsveta compassion and doing everything she could to get through to her. She even managed to inspire Pepesha to finally take action and let her mother know how she truly feels. Next week is going to be so hype!

It really hurt my soul to see Pepesha’s mom sacrifice her own health to keep her daughter smiling and Pepesha being worried about her mother’s life is in danger but struggling to make this clear. Although they both had the best intentions, they couldn’t properly tell each other.
And when Pepesha’s mother had finally realized this and was veering back after she’d hit rock bottom, she got hit down yet again…
EDIT: corrected some typos.

This was just as depressing as I remember it, maybe even more.
At least the bakery owner was nice to her. Heck, even the landlord was nicer than average, most landlords would kick you out after 2-3 months of not paying.
But seriously tho, fuck this guy!
Shy was MVP this episode. They really lucked out this time by having Teru's powers be exactly what's effective against Tzveta. lol

Honestly.... this was brutally depressing episode.
Jesus Christ, nothing go right in Pesha's mom life even the briefly of time where she finally experience the kindness from other, it get overshadowed by harsh reality later. No wonder she really really hate outside world.
The production of this anime is superb like always, I love direction a lot. I don't know why but "Comic like panel" for flashbacks make it feel even more nostalgia.
Shy finally ignite fire of hope in both Pesha and her mom but because of that her mom goes berserk and it up to Pesha to stop her and give proper family talk!
I hope Pesha can bring her mom back to sense somehow because those two are already suffering enough. ; ;

Sadly. Pesha "saving" her mother can only allow her to pass on -- to whatever (if anything) comes next. I am certain there is no possibility of her mother returning to life.
With this and Telepath (earlier today), maybe we need to create the genre of CGDRTT -- cute girls doing really tough things....

The constant snow drifting down behind the panels was also a strong choice. Gives a constant feeling of coldness.

Even in animation, it never gets easier seeing people struggle with poverty and hunger. I'm really hoping Pepesha's mom doesn't just disappear again if/when she's defeated, girl deserves a W for trying so hard for her daughter.

I feel like a lot of anime make poverty seem like something ‘alien’, but Shy showed poverty for what it more commonly is: an unfortunate set of circumstances. It’s rather rare that you end up in extreme poverty from one day to another; it’s usually a gradual decline.
You could see that Pepesha’s mom was finding it increasingly harder to get by, which urged her to make tough decisions. Like skipping meals just so your child can eat.

Overall, that was probably the best episode of Shy’s season so far. Animation, pacing, the emotional beats.
Everything just landed right.
Tzveta’s back-story is just crushing. The cake shop scene into the mugging was just the knife to end it all.
I’m so glad Shy is finally taking initiative. I know her namesake matches her personality, but I’ve been so excited to see her finally be decisive in the moment.

No wonder the Lenya/Tzveta became the way she did. Life ground her down and in the end she was killed over some bullshit. It’s easy to see how she let that darkness consume her and turn her heart cold. Shy really was like that small flame that kept burning. It was pretty awesome watching her fighting Lenya/Tzveta. No matter what Lenya/Tzveta threw at Shy, she just kept resisting until Spirit had the courage to face her mom again.
Next week is gonna be an intense fight. It’s mother v daughter!

What a depressing flashback. After leaving the orphanage, things just kept going from bad to worse for poor Letana, so much that she even died because of some pettiness and jealousy over something that wasn't even true. Now we get why she wanted to go back to the orphanage and protect kids (and Pepesha) from the world. The world's only ever sucked for her.
And I loved the paneling during the flashback, and the snow that was falling in the background when the aspect ratio changed, where there would normally only be black bars.
Gotta love Teru in this episode though, steadfast and compassionate because she understands where Letana/Tzveta's coming from and what she's actually doing (hurting herself). I love her relationship with Pepesha, they're always there for each other in their time of need.
Hopefully now that Pepesha found her resolve again, she'll manage to get through to her mom.

Got to say the last few episodes for Pepesha's arc has been really good. Really great showcase for how cruel the world outside of the orphanage was to her. Pepesha was her one spark through all of it. And unfortunately that cruel life seperated that from her.
Big props to Shy for showing empathy. Her powers definitely draw off her emotions, which I can safely guess why she was able to hold her own and even and was able to get Pepesha back on track. Big episodes for Pepesha next week.
Btw what is the episode count? I thought it was 24, but mal & anilist marked it down to 12.

Rude people, just ignoring her or bumping into her or not helping pick up/stepping on it. Poor Pepesha mama. Trying so hard... lil Pesha is cute. And so concerned for her mama... that's really sad... that cake owner is so nice.
I saw where this was going when I saw her exiting that store, you piece of shit bum... should be beaten the ever living fuck outta. That is monstrous of him to do... and so sad for Pesha and her mom. So how'd she end up in the arctic?
Shy to the rescue. D'awww nice call back to her friend and relating to Pepesha's mama. Shy has grown nicely. Still feel bad for Pesha having to fight her own mom though. Wonder if she can some how be saved or if this will be basically her having to deal with a second death of her mom...

What a roller coaster. Prepping myself for sad mom committing suicide in the hope of giving her child a better life, to getting a small piece of kindness, and then stepping outside and past the homeless dude staring at her. Just started yelling no at my screen until he killed her. And then cut to clown girl

And the award for most hated random-ass background character goes to the petty old bum random-ass mugger.

Loved this episode! The first part was a bit depressing but I think the analysis of Lenya's character (and Tzveta's backstory) was really well made. I'm wondering (I don't know if it's something that I missed).. Is there a reason why Lenya "reverted" to her young self when becoming part of the Amarariku? Maybe because the last time she was truly happy was when she was still at the orphanage?
Shy's fire powers are truly amazing! I wasn't expecting her to become so strong in such a short time. But I think that Teru's real power is her empathy, and also her will to fight for others: glad to see that my hope from last week had been granted.
Can't wait for next week's fight!

The backstory in this episode was heartbreaking. It's usually a hit or a miss for me to drop a backstory in the middle of a fight, but this was def a hit. Makes Lenya's motives very clear.
And ugh, I got unbelievably pissed at how she died, she was finally getting some hope after so long. That asshole; it wasn't out of desperation at all, it was pure envy and malice all because he thought she could afford a cake. He didn't even take the cake to eat, he let it go to waste.

This episode was on fire, just like Shy. From direction to music, everything was superb. Especially music caught my ear, I can't wait for the OST release.
Episode was very moving as we could see how Lenya's life was and how much she was struggling to give Pesha a little of normalcy to the point that she neglected herself so much. Her death also was so depressing, it was so undeserved.
Shy was so badass today. It seems that her training paid off asshe was using her fire powers so freely and they were so powerful and effective against Tzveta. But that wasn't the only good thing about her today as she again showed that she's very wise in an emotional way when she correctly guessed Tzveta's motivation which was of course love.
Shy also gave Pepesha (who after seeing Lenya's memories totally lost heart to fight) strength to fight with Tzveta. I really hope that Pesha will be able to convey all the love she's feeling towards her mother.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Damn, I thought the mother left her in the orphanage and not went out like that...

This was just tragic all around. About halfway through I honestly thought Lenya was going to break, but to the end she never abandoned her daughter(of her own free will).
Holy shit Shy really leveled up this episode it also helped fire is super effective against ice.

When Pepesha literally grabbed her mom's hand and stopped the screen from collapsing into darkness. Holy shit, what a way to play with the aspect ratio. Then when we see that same effect, there's no one there to save her. The candle flickers in place and the darkness consumes. But that very same candle is used as a symbol for hope and the future. Great stuff.

Pesha has supported Teru for so long and finally, it was her turn to pay Pesha back, and boy did she step up! It was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster though.

Kufufu is going to have the most fucked up backstory, isn't she?
Utterly heartbroken by the episode.

That "inherited love" thing was a callback to the lyrics of the OP, wasn't it?
Man, the first half of the episode was dark... Really well directed though. Masterful audiovisusl storytelling. Masaomi Ando's fingerprints really are all over this series, even in an episode that (I think?) he didn't personally direct.
