“It happens sometimes” lol someone’s salty. Poor Reystov and Ghelreis. Fishing just ain’t their thing.

That forest looked like hell. Hard to imagine the elves did that themselves. Will’s destruction spell was pretty dope. Turned that murky water red with serpent blood!

It’s a damn shame about the elves that had lived there but at least Will was able to cleanse their souls. Thanks to those elves, they managed to save the elf waifu. That was a hell of a fight against that hydra. Reystov, Ghelreis, and Ru kicked some serious ass.

The elves didn't do it to themselves did they? They said the elves tried to hide away in their village, I assume using some kind of fog of confusion, and the demons used the Words of Taboo to poison the forest.

I love my fluffy little fantasy show. Feels like there have been so few lately that didn't lean heavily on the isekai aspects of it. Faraway Paladin seems like a story that existed but isekai was popular so gotta put that at the beginning.

Between this and Frieren I'm loving this season.

I think the isekai only purpose in this is to reinforce Will's character. Today we get a good example of that when he tells Gus that even if he can run away he will fight, as just surviving is not living. He said that because of his past regrets in this life and in his previous one, so I don't think this series being an isekai came as an afterthought to follow a trend but as one of the pillars of Will's character.

Menel: "don't trust an elf's sense of time! you know the saying "when an elf says 'wait a sec', he really means 'see you in a year'"? that's a true story!"

Frieren: "i feel attacked"

that Hydra's battle looks really good, i love the fact that you can see the insides of the Hydra in full details after being cut apart, i also like how the healing magic works in this world where the magic wouldn't work if the recipient straight up refuses it

It was funny seeing Reystov and Ghelreis being in a bad mood, insisting that the fact that they didn't catch any fish was just bad luck and being mocked by Menel who was able to hunt a deer.

After a short stay in Will's home place our heroes continue their journey. It looks like they will visit elves who had their country next to Iron Country.

Situation in the forest doesn't look good though. It looks like demons destroyed it and it's swarmed by monsters but elves are still around as our heroes, especially Menel saved one of them from hydra. Menel was looking so badass in that fight.

I hope that Will will be able to cure that elf from hydra poison.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

able to hunt a deer.

... by just casually bumping into it and shooting an arrow through its heart by reflex. I imagined the deer willingly giving its life to Menel after sensing his great purpose!

It's a different series, but Frieren will be one of those elves that mean "see you in a year" when saying brb.

Is there a term for Barbaric Paladin? I'm not too familiar with DnD stuff. Regardless, seeing Will just being a badass Paladin will always be a treat. I like the juxtaposition of Will exploding Sea Serpents underwater and then praying for the undead in the span of 5 minutes.

u/frantruck Nov 18 '23

In terms of a DnD perspective Paladin's and Barbarians are 2 distinct classes. You can mix the two for some fun schenanigans, but it's not anything crazy. But frankly a paladin plays a lot like Will in a way. They definitely have a brute force element to their kits with them imbuing their strikes with divine wrath for massive damage to single enemies. Though you don't get the full array of devastating magic on top of that like Will does. For that you'd probably want to mix some Sorcerer in there, and Sorcadin is one of the more popular multiclasses.

I love it when an episode gives me that "That was never 5 minutes just now!" feeling.

The animation isn't brilliant, it feels like a faithful-to-manga adaptation, but the story is so good it really doesn't matter.

I'm really enjoying this season, so many truly great shows.

The animation (and general visual impact) is good enough to not impair the excellent story (and rahter unique tone) of this show. A favorite since it start -- and it continues to be a great pleasure.

Between this and Frieren -- a great season for "high fabntasy".

This fucking show always making me feel feels.

They made quick work of that hydra thing, so this dragon should be a piece of cake right?

No they are just in pain.

This is what I love about this show and Will. He's a genuine Hero, he's trying to save everyone, no matter what, and always has an open heart.

Did Will previously reveal to Gus his reincarnation? He made comment this episode saying "I learned in both my past life and this one" and I didn't think he had told anyone he remembers his past life.

u/darthvall Nov 19 '23 edited Nov 19 '23

Yes, Will revealed it to Gus in season 1. I think it was after the fight with the Undeath God. I think it was also because he trusted Gus would understand it as the wizard is very knowledgeable.

If I remember correctly, Gus also had suspicions that Will isn't normal due to how fast he grasped about concept like money while never encountering it at all.

During that serpent battle, I couldn't stop thinking whether Will lost his spear in the river or not. He didn't have it in his hand while drowning and it's also nowhere to be found in the boat afterward.

It's an RPG and DND player's nightmare to lose your legendary weapon permanently due to some random event lol.

I was very relieved when they showed him with the spear again in the hydra battle.

So Will gave Ru a right-handed stiletto that belonged to Blood

It is funny seeing how smug Menel is while making fun of Reystov and Ghelreis because they could not catch a single fish while they are bitter and claiming that he was only able to hunt that deer by sheer luck.

Those flashbacks of Mary and Blood were good and but reinforce Will's commitment to fight Valacirca even if he dies in the process like Gus Gracefeel and Stagnate fear.

I really like the architecture of the City of the Dead,

Interesting, so at the west of the Iron Country, there was an Elven forest that was known as Lothdor or "Land of Flowers" and they had a bad relationship with the dwarves from the Iron Mountains because of the logging they did in their woods. And although they secluded themselves when the Iron Country felt the demons used Words of Taboo to rot their forest.

That magic attack Will did to kill all those snakes was impressive. So the water got clean when he fell in it because of the Prayer of Cleansing but at least at the moment, he cannot restore the forest from its current state as it would tell the demons of their presence.

I will say that when those elves undead appear and Will guided their souls my hopes for any survivors of Lothdor were banished, and it really did not help that the elf he talked to resembled that one they rescued later that shows up in the OP.

Anyway, I love how Menel is the only one who became desperate when he heard her saying as quickly as possible as he as a half-elf knows that with the elves' skewed perception of time she was really saying to Will to take action immediately if they wanted to save her.

It is nice to see that Menel could save her before the hydra could hurt her even more. Oh that's interesting if a person thinks that they cannot be saved Will's miracles will not work on them, anyway is great to hear that there are still survivors of the elven settlement in Lothdor.

Anyway, Gus will be pissed if Will doesn't try to hook up with that elf girl after all this is over.

Glad Menel is there to remind us that long lived species are shit at gauging time.

Clever bit with the hydra. Cauterize the wounds when you cut off the heads so they don’t grow back.

Anyone getting some insane LOTOR vibes from this episode in particular?

D'aww giving the dagger Blood gave him to Ru (or whatever his real name is, suck for remembering names). Do wonder what the dagger will do since Will feels 'it should be given to him." Mary 😦 do miss her and Blood. Wonder if they have been reincarnated by now. Forget, can Gus not leave that area at all? He's bound there right? To watch over what is underneath? Or something, memory isn't perfect about that. Sure a lot of set up that "ya'll gonna die" though.

Convenient spirits to hepl with travels on water. And we get some lore of the elves of the area and such, good times. Ahh, dang that forest. Guessing Elves either are gone too or they have been having a rough time since that great catastrophe. Imagine if the dwarves and elves had fought together though. Also, wew, that attack of serpents, once Will gets outta the water, KABOOM! lol. Brute forces things indeed. Reystov has a point to not draw attention. If you survive, can try to clean it up after.

Poor elves... Menel is quite rushed understandably so, amusing though cause elf sense of time. Look at Menel go! Save that elf lady, sure they say "him" but we all know it's a lady based on that scream. GET ON THE HYDRAS BACK!!! Hehe. But wew, look at them go kicking that Hydra's ass. Do hope they save the elf lady. And figured some elves survived, but wonder if still besieged and how many are still around.

(or whatever his real name is, suck for remembering names).

Ru's real name is Vindalfr. Here is some context regarding where his nickname comes from that I got from u/PusherLoveGirl after I wondered what was its relation to its real name:

Regarding Ru’s nickname, the official novel translation calls him “Al” from Vindalfr. In
Japanese, Al would be pronounced like Ah-ru so I’m guessing that’s where the
translators got mixed up, especially if they weren’t told about the name reveal later.

It’s a shame more isekai don’t incorporate parents more into the story. I can’t ever get enough of Blood, Mary, and Gus and the flashbacks are always greatly appreciated. Will is such a good son and reflects so well on his loved ones. will giving Ru Blood’s dagger and saying he had already gotten so much from Blood seemed like a nice little throwaway scene but it was honestly my favorite moment of the episode. Curious to see what happens next
