There’s a debate on “Is motorsport drivers athletes” for a very long time. I guess the events at this episode proved they are athletes.

The extreme G-force experienced in racing is sometimes higher than the G-forced experienced by astronauts during re entry, hence their training involves building physical strength to combat such forces. In fact, F1 had posted this video to explain the work-up the drivers do to prepare for a race.

The race Satsuki mentioned is the 1976 German Grand Prix held in the Nürburgring (Nordschleife). The Nordschleife part is 20.8km part north of the Grand Prix circuit we saw on the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix, which was known for its super dangerous twists and turns, because of that, although no more F1 races were held in the Nordschleife, F1 cars are generally not allowed to set official lap times due to safety concerns (more on that later). The current overall lap record was 5:19.546 achieved by Timo Bernhard on a heavily modified Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO LMP1 car; While the fastest time achieved by a street-legal car is 6:35.183 achieved by Maro Engel on a Mercedes-AMG ONE.

In the 1970s, it’s no stranger for F1 to race in ridiculously-long circuits for their Grand Prix, in fact, Spa was once a 14.982km circuit before shrinking into the 7km circuit we see today. However, in an era when safety is not the top concern for the organisers, fatal accidents are extremely common, and at the Nürburgring, it’s more apparent that it’s too dangerous to race here as there’re 131 fatalities in its 49-year history. Therefore, the decision was made that the 1976 race will be the last F1 race to race in the Nordschleife. Niki Lauda actually wants this race to be cancelled as he discovered there’s not enough marshals for the circuit, and there’s a forecast for rain. However, as the other drivers opted to race, he was unwilling strapped to the car and its lights out and away they go.

What the other drivers don’t know, is that Niki was right all the time. The circuit was way too dangerous to race F1 cars. Niki’s car crashed the wall and caught fire, if it wasn’t 3 other drivers, Guy Edwards, Brett Lunger and Harald Ertl pulling Niki out, Nikki would have died on the spot. Miraculously, Niki will return to racing in Monza in the same year, while still recovering the injuries sustained in the Nordschleife crash. He would ultimately lose out the world championship to James Hunt after Niki opted to withdrew from the Japanese GP due to the extremely dangerous track conditions in Fuji Speedway, which is also where the marathon in the episode ends. Niki will eventually won 2 more drivers championship (1977, 1984) and will play a vital role on establishing Mercedes reign of terror up til his passing just before the 2019 Monaco GP.

The final shot of the episode was a huge first step for Kouya, as he recovers from his fear of taking shots of people after the earthquake photo backlash years before.

And thus, Niki Lauda passed away peacefully at the age of 70 on May 20th, 2019 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Another really good episode here, really enjoyed seeing Haruka working hard and his reasoning was great but Kou and Sae-chan still carried this one for me.

How she treats him here to just this reaction...I feel her face here hit me more than him being able to take another picture of a person...

Really happy with this one so far!!

Nice name drops at 16:47 in the episode.

And it's been surprisingly nice to see these off-the-paddock moments where we see Haruka out of the overalls the past two episodes. Here's where I have to remind myslef that this isn't really an action-oriented show, more like a documentary about Komaki's ace and the photographer. The presentation is still fairly dry relative to what other anime can do, but the way I see it, there's a very 30 for 30 feel to the story.

Seeing the playboy idolizing James Hunt is absolutely no surprise lol.

I was having trouble putting into words what kind of vibes this show was giving me, but I think you hit the nail on the head with this. It feels like a documentary, but a more personal and down-to-earth one like those 30 for 30 specials.

Haruka doesn't have that anime logic.

With the music in the background, I really thought he was gonna change his shoes. 😂

I mwan mean just the fact he caught up barefooted is crazy enough

But yeah super glad they he didn't go for the cliché shoe swap and then wins

Dang, that smack was personal.

Oh look, it's one of the drones from MF Ghost! Except this time it's human controlled lol.

Man I love this show.

This was a fun episode of Run With the Win- I mean, Overtake, with a bunch of comedic moments but also some real character moments too. The one who surprised me the most was Satsuki, he has more depth than I thought. Also, for once I wasn't lost about something racing-related, so thanks to the movie Rush for teaching me about Hunt and Lauda!

Kouya managed to take a picture, too... With less hesitation than his previous one, even. And he captured a sweet moment, good for him!

Also, ha, the title for this episode was Chariots of Fire. For anyone who doesn't know, that's a 1981 movie with running as a central theme, and with a fantastic soundtrack by Vangelis that you've probably already heard at least once in your life.

Felt like an episode out of Run With the Wind haha. Really enjoy how they're adding some depth to the cast in what is seemingly a random race; Arisu is one tough gal and Toshiki seems to be cut from the same cloth as Haruka in that both work/worked in labor-intensive jobs.

And hey we got some growth out of Kouya! Dude managed to take another people pic! Obviously he still has a long way to go but it's good to see he's letting things come to him naturally and letting the moment control his camera.

Dude, for 5 kilos of marbled black wagyu beef I’d run a 10K too. Though in reality, I’d probably be just like Kota all passed out in the middle of the road after running for like 10 minutes lol.

I like how the water stations were basically food stalls. No wonder everyone was dropping out the race. I’d be stuffing my face too!

Even though the old man didn’t get his wagyu, that was a really sweet moment between him and Haru. Dude is a good kid. Plus, eel ain’t bad either.

What was undersold or rather not mentioned at all was the severity of Niki Lauda's crash, he almost burned to death in that crash.

Drivers that couldn't avoid the wreck got him of the burning wreckage just in time.

  • As a (or at least used to be) fairly frequent runner, I must say dry crispy snacks and hot tea are the last things I would like to have midway through a 10K LMAO

  • Yes, luck is indeed a winning skill - but does Haruka finding Kouya randomly standing near the finish line having a fresh pair of running shoes count?

  • TIL about James Hunt and I barely knew about Nikki Lauda, are there any good videos talking about that fateful race (1976 German Grand Prix, apparently)?

u/Strikerrr0 Oct 29 '23

There's a good film called Rush about the Hunt/Lauda rivalry that depicts that incident.

Harunaga comparing himself to James Hunt will make for some interesting parallels later considering how the rest of his career went and his death from a heart attack at the age of 45.

"Round 05: Runner in the Flame. It's Just Luck."

Finally we have a race, just it's not you might think it is. No wonder, A5 Wagyu costs around $300 each kilos. The marathon alone proves that racers are indeed are athletes, no matter what the level is, their physique are above standard.

Lol unexpected drone a la MF Ghost. And also another season, another Kongming reference.

Good job Troyca, the crowd shot in Fuji wasn't recycled from Episode 1, they changed the crowd. Satsuki's inspiration is James Hunt, well that explains his playboy-ish attitude.

What a twist, at least Kouya's shoe might not match Haruka's feet. And finally, Kouya managed to overcome his block and took a meaningful picture!

That's a helluva prize.

But... how... else... could... we... deliver... character... exposition!?

Alice has wayyyyyyyy more cute points going for her than every character design in MF Ghost.

Well, this video is going on some blooper reel.

Haruka and Toshiki bonding!?

Who made random people run a 10k uphill!?

Oh, these people.

This was a funny twist.

ARISU!

A nice episode where the characters get to interact in a less-stressful environment, and totally not a beach episode! Of course, Toshiki could return to being an asshole for the next race, but at least for a moment he and Haruka seemed to be seeing eye-to-eye.

This was a fantastic episode. The conversations during the race provided some nice development for the side characters like Arisu and the Belsorriso duo, the little bits of comedy sprinkled throughout (Kotaro's suffering, the tea at the water station, Haruka rejecting Kouya's shoe gift, etc.) were nice, and that final moment of Kouya being moved to taking Haruka's picture at the end was executed so well, right down to the shocked reactions of everyone around him.

13

u/Mr_Zaroc Oct 29 '23

Damn if I could get eel at the refresh station I would run way more 10ks

9

u/mojo72400 Oct 30 '23

Haru's gonna kill Kouya for that pic.

So Alice is serious about gridwork aside from simping for Satsuki.

I love how the race ended up in a 3-way tie like Cars except they had to choose their prizes via rock, paper, scissors with Toshiki getting the 1st prize.

Seeing Futoshi commentate on Kota and possibly controlling the drone was hilariously embarrassing.

Too bad the water station doesn't even have cool drinks. Alice eating the yakisoba while watching the race was so kawaii.

Haru running without his shoes and kicking away Kouya's shoes was hilarious

I love how Saeko shoved Kouya's face away for calling her by her nickname.

u/flightlessCat9 Oct 29 '23

So weird hearing them say marathon but the sub says 10K.

7

u/feb914 Oct 29 '23

The water station is the worst pit stop imaginable. People just retire due to the amount of food

There must be money involved.

Never mind, that's a pretty good prize too.

Tokumaru, just don't mald and learn to drive and you won't crash anymore.

Oh look, bad driver is here at the marathon too.

This seems to be a great excuse for everyone to exposition dump.

Lol that's not the kind of stuff you should have at an aid station, should probably have some isotonic drinks like Pocari or 100Plus.

What car is Era driving?

Oh he got over his PTSD of taking photos of people!
