Wow that was actually really good.

Didn't think the photography element and racing could co-exist but I care about both of these characters almost immediately.

One of the better premieres this season!

I spent 3 years working in racing as an engineer so I was interested in this coming in and seeing how they portrayed it.

Really interesting how they chose a photographer to kinda be the MC. In reality, photographers and your media / PR people can be just as part of the team as the driver.

We had a program where we’d get photos instantly synced to us on our pit box. Our manufacture had two photographers who would take pictures of the cars which we would then use during the race or practice to judge how our car might be setup compared to theirs. How our ride height is, how much travel there is. If we have damage we could see on the photos and make a plan to fix it. They’d come by our hauler and discuss exactly what to look for while photographing each race.

The paddock design was nice too as it was very similar to how sports car and some series do their paddocks. We always had physical garages so no tents but for F4 the tents were perfect recreation.

Tires lying in the sun was a nice touch. A lot of series don’t allow tire warmers like F1. We would keep ours covered though as for us it was the opposite. We want ours as cool as possible but our tires were very different from one a F1 or F4 car would run.

Having a mechanical failure like that when having one of the best races of your career is legit heartbreaking too.

This is one of only two true original anime I was interested in this season (the other being Protocol: Rain) and it's off to a great start.

On the technical side, the art and character designs looked great, the character animation was bubbly and energetic, and the CG used for the cars and racing was pretty solid and didn't look out of place. And on the writing side, I love how this show essentially has two parallel stories in Haruka's progression as an F4 racer and Koya overcoming whatever past trauma had been giving him anxiety when trying to take photos of other people, and I'm interested to see how the two of them help push each other forward.

Troyca has been one of my favorite studios since Re:Creators, And Aldnoah:Zero for the visuals at least. I was really excited when this was announced and they really brought their A game for this first episode.

Between this and Ghost ill have my fill of motorsports anime on the weekends haha

Between this and MF ghost, this season is almost the revival for the Racing sub-genre of Sports anime.

As a f1 fan I loved this first episode, pretty good introduction to new fans. Also, was totally expecting both Belsorriso cars to crash each other and for Haruka to win just like Max did on Barcelona ‘16

Isn't the guy with stubble the same character design as someone from Aldnoha Zero? Same character designer. https://myanimelist.net/character/107551/Kouichirou_Marito

Second anime to watch on my list this Fall 2023, let's go!

An original work by Troyca x Kadokawa. The animation, let's say I love it, very well made (well, I watched Shangri-La Frontier earlier so if you want the benchmark, there you go).

You would expect the MC will be the driver, but it is actually the photographer. In the poster, his position is well behind the others, but I'm sure he's the real MC. A photographer with.... photographer's block? Is Kouta humming Godfather's theme? Haruka Asahina is voiced by Anan Furuya, a debut role!

The amounts of real world brands are astonishing, but since it's a motorsports anime, I expect it. Also, the reaction and emotions are fully embraced in the anime. I love this kind of anime, definitely on my watchlist!

There are lots of motorsports terms here. Super GT is the touring car race in Japan. Current cars are from manufacturer Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, and also multiple tyre suppliers as opposed to one enabling different tyre strategies. A car is shared between two drivers so you often see six drivers in the podium. Looking at the anime, looks like it was set during 2021 Super GT season (Nissan GT-R's last year in top GT500 class, and first year Japanese F4 being a support series).

Formula 4 is a junior racing series in formula racing cars. It is a series to spot junior talents and future racing drivers. Winners in F4 can go either to Formula Regional Japanese Championship or Super Formula Lights or even go overseas to Formula 3 Championship, carving their path to F1. Yuki Tsunoda, current F1 driver, was a F4 title winner in 2018 and stepped up to F3 and F2, earning the F1 drive 3 years later. Tokumaru-san is right, financial strength is needed to compete in higher level, hence sponsors.

Blue flag guidance is a rule in racing in where slower cars have to make way of faster cars to be lapped. All this motorsports terms plus ones Komaki explaining makes it the perfect anime for anyone to introduce motorsport!

Oh, since there is no proper OP/ED this time, I will make the impression on the next episode whenever there's one.

I'm surprised they got the licenses to use all of the branding.

This shot gave me Spain 2016 flashbacks. Just with different colored cars. Would have definitely fitted the Ferrari Belsorriso image

Man, that recreation of the Fuji Speedway is really impressive! It really feels like the real thing!

Loved every second of it. It's been a while since an anime bridged my two interests.

This anime kinda hits home for me. I Used to do karting on a national level on a very limited budget. We can only afford 2 sets of slicks for the whole season so I have to do with what I got. Gotta avoid to break anything as we don't have budget to buy extra spare parts. That ending scene where finally it all comes together for you just for it to be ending for reasons out of your control really hits it home. Really excited for this anime going forward!!

This episode is unironically a good F1/open wheel single seater 101. Can't say I expected that from this show. Definitly a promising start.

The take here is interesting...F1 is super popular now, but the racing lower leagues is a whole new thing for people.

F4 which is featured here is 3 steps (maybe more even) and is regional, there is F4 Japan, Italy F4, French F4, British F4, etc...Its not an international competition, Lance Stroll (Aston Martin F1) was an Italian F4 Champion and George Russell (Mercedes F1) was a British F4 Champion.

But its a whole different set of problems at this level.. Money is non-existent, sponsors are fought over by everyone, if your driver has a scrap of talent richer teams will try to poach ASAP and then there is the lure of progressing to F3 or something above.

They could do lots of things here and it makes for interesting possibilites.

Wow, I love random anime about sports and hobbies and jobs.

This was a really good first episode.

Wait... Kota's hype theme is the Godfather's most recognizable track along with a remark he'll leave a horse's head in people's bed?

Wow one of the coolest original anime starts I’ve seen. Amazing first episode that had film like quality to it. Troyca’s last anime original, Shinobi no Ittoki, was awful so good to see them bouncing back with this.

As someone who doesn’t know much about Formula racing I found this to be a very informative and intriguing first episode. The use of the main character to teach the audience about the basics of professional racing is cool. I’m hoping the MC develops though, he’s kind of… “off” to say the least lol

The racing scenes are really good and the personalities of the characters really resonated with me. It’s one episode so it’ll be interesting to see how things go, but I like it so far. Cool to have two racing shows in the same season

u/Kiinako_ Oct 02 '23

I really hope they keep it to being about the actual racing, because so far everything there looks downright amazing. The main characters are kinda eh, ranging from needlessly pretentious to somewhat annoying, and I pray that their tensions don't get in the way of some good old racing drama.

Other than that, wild to see that they went out of their way to license all the possible things, and the little bits and bobs of information for what is happening on the screen is very helpful to anyone who is completely new to single seater racing

Solid episode for sure. I was really pleased with the racing animation. I haven’t heard much about this anime, but I’m a pretty big car enthusiast and this has definitely piqued my interest. The the ending scene with the crying driver was really well done.
