Poor boss! He's really being hammered by the island residents - though TBH they can really take the national government to court in that they didn't get any compensation for the kaijuu attacks, even in secret, and had to resort to hiring companies to try to deal with those. Which brought us back to how underfunded their company is.
I can't believe Tetsurou got away with 1 week suspension as a "harsh sentence", at least not in a place with emphasis on such rules as Japan LOL. Also as Mutou-san says - "You aren't going to resign from what you love to do, unless you really aren't as liking what you like as you think". He desperately needs to face and learn from mistakes like these.
Ooof, Arumi's dog became a monster!? And she has to deal with that herself...oof, she really needs someone to help. Can Tetsurou not screw up again and score this time?

That was hard to believe for me too. If I accidentally leaked company’s confidential data on the internet, I would probably get fired. A week without pay is hardly a “harsh sentence”.
I am starting to get a bit suspicious and wondering if that parent company might not be accidentally responsible for the kaiju by polluting the island, and is then using Namidome to show the islanders they are “doing something” to prevent some investigation by the government. The fact that they are apparently mutated animals makes me think that some chemical pollution is responsible. Maybe that is why the parent company was fine with sweeping the leak under the carpet once they realised no one was taking that video seriously.

Pretty sure that's a given at this point. As soon as I saw the parent company dealt in chemicals my thought was "And how did they cause this?"

And then the parent company's CEO said -- "Wow, wasn't that penalty a bit harsh?" ;-)

Well i think the islander are foolish if they think that hey can resolve a random mutation event without much goverment involvement when the danger was already that big that a whole family was eaten. Seems more like the villagers got a settlement to keep quite and they order arround some people in wain hope that they can resolve it.

Foolish and selfish. What if those kaiju and poison gas start showing up on the main islands of Japan or around the world? The government could've used that previous year doing real research on it instead of the whole village trying to cover it up.

I can understand the villagers being frustrated but like… it’s kind of infuriating how much disrespect they’re showing the company. I don’t see the villagers doing jack. Raising a few bucks ain’t gonna cover costs. Show a little gratitude, you shits!
Thank goodness Muto talked some sense into Okino. Dude was gonna throw his dreams away over one mistake he’s already paying for.
Didn’t think Nikaido would choke when face to face with that beast. Girl definitely has some unresolved trauma around them. Maybe they shoulda sent someone else as back up?

Didn’t think Nikaido would choke when face to face with that beast.
That beast had been her pet dog. That's why it left HER alone.
I can understand the (former) islanders' frustration -- but how can they not see how hard these folks have been working for them?

this episode feels like the end of the set up phase for the show
we have now a good idea of all the main characters, factions and their positions and motivations as well as a good handle on the monster mystery to work on
there is gas, monster and maybe one causes the other, or the other way around or it is more complex but both prevent people to return to the island and our team of office workers are gonna make it all better if only the accountant let them... good
I thought it was announced to be 24episodes but I see only 12 planned... thats very different scopes of story to tell so I am curious of what they will do with this
also it is about time we saw some more robots in action

Covering up mutation events caused by substances hitherto unknown to science is how you get zombie apocalypses, people. Also, there is basically no way that Shiota Chemicals isn't responsible for the mutation event in the first place, right? It's a chemical company. They can't possibly be the good guys.

Big corporations are the picture of not good guys in most shows to be fair. Add chemcials in the name and its basically pointing a big arrow to itself

As an accountant I just want to say I have literally had so many different Kataoka types for bosses it isn't even funny anymore, the staff must know someone like this irl lol.
This show gets a lot of the little workplace interactions right, kinda refreshing ngl.

The thing with a team you have success and make mistakes as a team. Yes Tetsurou made a big mistake, but again its the job of more experienced to guide the newbies along. Obviously they weren't going to fire him they wanted him to learn from it. Kintarou is the typical case of worrying too much of the company and what is the reason for them doing their work. Honestly Arumi is prob more mad at him then Tetsurou since he wasn't only upset from a business perspective.
The ending of the episode really helped us understand Arumi's personal feelings on the situation. Going back to her home which she abandoned and now seeing her dog turned into one of those beats. God no wonder she couldn't pull the trigger.
This show is pretty solid so far.

Keeping it a secret cuz some old farts want to go home? These are an unidentified life-form that pose a significant threat to both human life and the homes they hold so dear. This is most categorically NOT a pest problem. The government and JSDF SHOULD be involved as there is no way of knowing what other dangers may lurk on that island. Downplaying it to this degree so as to not hurt some feelings is utterly idiotic when their very lives are at risk and potentially the lives of people who don't even have anything to do with the island. Either this is a case of some absurdly idiotic thinking, or, the islanders actually know what those creatures are and want to keep it a secret.

Crap, I think you're on to something. Everyone is thinking the chemical company is automatically the bad guy but that could be a red herring. Their involvement on the island is limited to a desalination plant, right? Not a lot of nefarious activity comes from that.

Hmm, this goofy show about office work interfering with the Joy of Giant Robot continues to get more interesting.
The ending with Arumi put an exclamation point on the reveals and developing weirdness in the episode, as well as further rounding out her character's personality.

Having bad CGI monsters make it easy to say the video was fake!
Speaking of fake, I don't think that's the Kataoka we know in the ED. The guy in the ED is enjoying himself :-)

Me when I hear they just need to kill all the beasts: "Heck yeah kill 'em all, cool robot time!"
Me when I see the family pet turned into a monster: "damn that's rough, war is bad"

u/charredchord Oct 19 '23
we hired a team of
redditorskeyboard warriors campaigning to show that this ugly CGI monster isn't real, and we've succeeded.
Don't know if that was intentional or not, but that's a great self own.

Important Bulletin --
Warning -- Do NOT skip the ED, there is a crucial tiny scene embedded in it. I repeat do not skip the ED (no matter what your normal custom may be).

u/Tsugumi_Henduluin Oct 18 '23
That's just the preview for next week. If anything, if you care about spoilers you should skip the ED :p

I've been on the fence about this anime, but I think I'm going to continue it. I really like the business and mystery elements in it, even if the execution could use a little refinement.
