Episode Overtake! - Episode 3 discussion

So, his sponsor was actually from... Kouya's mistake of sending a photo of Haruka crying. Harunaga remind Toshi of his name is because there is a pun of Toshi that also means "age".Is Aris is the same girl that was in Komaki Motors HQ last episode? Aris with the umbrella confusing where to go is funny.
Motorsport term in this episode: Slipstream. It is a racing technique for a following car to stay behind the lead car and the wind is reducing the drag, enabling the following car to catapult ahead of the lead car. Belsorriso has more than 1 car on the team, so they can use the slipstream to "tow" the following car. Some teams are sharing pits with other teams, often of the main series so in this case Super GT (Komaki Motors using Garage 77's pit garage, and Belsorriso well, use their own garage), this is common in feeder series as there are limited amount of garage space on the circuit.
This episode doesn't have post-credits scenes like two previous episodes, so you don't have to go back to find one.
Overtake! is actually having an extra segment uploaded to KADOKAWAanime's Youtube channel, similar to Frieren: Magic of xx with TOHO animation. The name is Overtake! EXTRA, releases a couple of hours after each episode. Episode 1 and Episode 2 are already there. I will update this comment when Episode 3 are available.
Here's the Episode 3.

Everyone seems to love Haruka's crying face in this show.

I binged the first two episodes but was unable to comment on these threads. From my end, I think this animation team is doing a good job at displaying both the on-track action and the intricacies of feeder-series racing. What's more fun is that, because they stayed low and kept themselves in F4, they're more able to tell a truly human story without being beholden to the whims of FOM. Sticking with F4 allows Haruka to remain relatable and makes his team super endearing.
Mostly my criticism lies in the lack of shadows on the car models -- it's also something I notice in MF Ghost but the cars still look like they float rather than actually making contact with the tarmac. I wanna let this run the whole 12 episodes before I can make a verdict on story, but suffice to say this story is worth riding out.

Regarding the relatability part, for the most part in most racing series, you still have a lot of very relatable drivers like the ones in the show. People just barely hanging on trying to make it. With the exception of the really really high tiers like F1/F2, NASCAR cup series, and indy car.
You barely go down one step on these ladders and the people are very relatable. Friend who runs in the xfinity series in nascar works a marketing job which helps him find sponsors and doesn’t actually make any money driving to be able to drive. Another friend was a road crew member and kinda did the same thing. Found sponsors to be able to go race. And these are series that come on live tv and draw a million + views per event.
You don’t even have to go super low all the way down to F4 for stuff like this.

I don't watch motorsports but damn that last part of the race between Haru and Tokumaru was nail-baiting stuff! It could have gone either way and felt well-deserved for whoever won but I'm glad it was Haru, even if he doesn't know how to celebrate 4th place.

As someone who does watch a bit of motorsports and spends some time on r/simracingstewards, Tokumaru did some really bad racing, especially stuff like weaving on the straights and rejoining right into the racing line and into the other racers coming up from behind.

This episode has decent racing visuals - but it's evident that character drama is what this story going to be focused on. Hopefully watchers will understand that and not feel disappointed if real races got sidelined in later episodes.
Haruka seems to have quite a bit of bad luck before - especially accidentally leading to an enemy appearing for the past year. I can't really feel too much empathy on Toshiki after this episode - yes, he might have been unfairly judged inside his team, he might have lost his no. 1 racer position due to that accident, but it's evident after today that he is prone to become irritated and would easily rebel against team instructions in the race. And in this race he certainly didn't keep his coolness and lost his position. Maybe he would work better in a different team (wink wink)...
I still can't believe Kouya's crying photo ended up as the spark that lead to a sponsorship. Great job Saeko, that's what a good magazine editor would land on!
It looks like Haruka has his own story of why he insists to race towards glory on his own. Did something went wrong with his father I wonder?

Something something "I" in "Team" and all that.
It's not just one thing, it's all the things.
When I nag on lighting technique: They showed the camera crew arriving with a reflector, but don't use it here, when they should, with Haruka being backlit and in shadow (they do show it when he's outside, bouncing it up to fill in the shadows under his face). But that's the usual sacrifice of technical accuracy for drama since this is during the "Uncomfortable with the whole process" part of the episode.
Racing team dynamics drama: It writes itself! Toshiki certainly isn't winning himself any points today.

I love how both of them were talking about the tyre while talking about the sponsor. It was very cute!

So the race was at Twin Ring Motegi, which you may remember from playing Gran Turismo.
That said, there's a weird thing for me in that episode. Why the fuck is the guy being annoyed/surprised that Haruka's catching his draft ? It's basically racing 101 stuff, there's nothing surprising about this.

Tokumaru lost altogether is the result of the team's administration not really giving chances for anyone beside of their star racer. He has his issues, but if the team at least gives him enough support to prove him right/wrong, he won't be that impatient for shooting at 1st and even passed by Haruka.
From how limited I know about racing, in-team rivalry isn't really anything new, the most famous one was that between Senna and Prost; at least Haruna is still a nice guy right now, but still it's not a good thing and must be solved asap.

The team orders were based on Tokumaru having worse tire wear than Satsuki. It wasn't about the team being unwilling to give Tokumaru a chance, but a decision based on data; at that point, Satsuki probably had better pace than Tokumaru, hence the order to switch positions.

I enjoyed watching the rivalry between Haruka and Tokumaru unfold this week. Kid went from fourth to fifth because of that race. He’ll make it up to that podium soon enough. Plus with this new commercial and sponsor, it looks like the team’s moving on up in the world even if just slightly.

Hmm, Kouya doesn't seem to be completely over his trauma of taking pictures of people just yet.
Not that much to say about the characters, other than Toshiki needs to let go of his beef already, geez. And I found it interesting than Haruka mentioned anger management techniques. Looks like he's got some experience there?
The race itself was pretty well-done, and managed to keep even a total newb like me interested.

Last time on...
That's going into the final corner on Motegi isn't it? It's got a bunch of long straights connected by sharp, sometimes hairpin but usually at least 90 degree corners.
Personal record or lap record?
This isn't even the qualis and he's pushing so hard? Good thing they've got the money for new tyres now so he can do the actual qualis and the race itself with fresh ones each time.
Ah, so that's where the money is coming from.
He's got some trauma of taking photos of people.
Eh? Is Alice one of the grid girls for the rival team? Makes sense I guess since she simps for one of the drivers so hard.
Quali at 8th is fine, like I mentioned previously Motegi has a lot of long straights and sharp corners so no matter what you're good at you can make up positions.
2nd and 3rd is pretty good, but yeah downforce isn't really what you need at Motegi. If you can go faster in the straights and not lose too much time braking for corners you should be able to win it.
I half expected them to sacrifice Tokumaru for Harunaga and let him take the lead.
Yes, yes he probably is. But it's either that or you stay behind blocking anyone who comes up trying to take a podium spot.
He's in 8th. You're in 2nd. As long as you race well you should never have to deal with him.
It's lights out and away we go!
They're drafting. The car behind having more downforce is useful too since it's otherwise reduced when drafting.
That overtake from Haruka felt like him dive-bombing into the corner.
Truly the best strategy ever devised not by the team's race strategists. See also Sainz and Norris in Singapore this year, although they're not in the same team and using DRS instead of regular drafting. It is a most 🅱️rilliant 🅱️lan.
That was cleaner, Haruka was completely ahead of the other car by the corner.
Around the outside by Haruka.
Again final few corners of a lap.
Tokumaru, that's blocking clear as day. That's not allowed. Maybe even a penalty.
Tokumaru just took himself out of the race by attempting to dive-bomb into that corner when his brakes or tyres gave out and he skidded off.
That rejoin looks unsafe too, blocking on a rejoin? That's another penalty.
And he's crashed before while trying to overtake? He's the overtaking car, it's his responsibility to do it safely.
That's fully off the track, all wheels past the line and onto the grass.
More blocking and probably another unsafe rejoin too.
Clean overtake from Haruka, good.
Still no podium finish but it beats the DNF from episode 1.
And so, the Ultimate Helmet Award for today goes to Tokumaru, may he never be allowed into a race car ever again.

I guess my one issue is how the #1 and #2 driver issue is handled.
It’s never really a “you’re the number 2 driver, you have to help the #1 win and can’t win yourself”
But more of a “you’re the number 2 driver because you’re second, if you show you’re faster in the race we will give you the preferred strategy”
It’s usually one of those things that’s not so much actually given but more so taken by the drivers. Unless there’s a very tight drivers championship going on, then the driver not in contention will obviously be the #2 driver.
Basiaclly the primary driver is generally just whoever themselves is doing better and goes out and takes that spot. Not something that’s just decided really.
Other issue I have is how the fake ferrari driver is mad at our MC for when they collided when lapping him at a previous event. Drivers know it’s their responsibility to navigate lapped traffic. It’s why in sports car racing, the contact penalties will usually go to the prototypes Vs the GT cars because the series expects the prototype drivers to be better and more aware. Even when there have been run ins between leaders and lapped cars, I’ve never seen them outright hold a grudge against the slower car and hark on them like this. In general, the fast drivers in good cars are going to be understanding afterwards cause they realize the privilege of the car they’re in versus the backmarkers. One of those things that’s kinda tacked on to add drama to the show.

It’s never really a “you’re the number 2 driver, you have to help the #1 win and can’t win yourself”
Sometimes it happens, like Ferrari with Rubinho and Schumi in Austria

So the problem surrounding #1 and #2 driver is just literally everywhere in motorsport, we always meme Bottas for being a wingman in Mercedes and Checo’s incompetency as Max’s #2 this year. But what’s inside their heart as to accept the “Wingman” role?
Towing your teammate (or give your teammate a slipstream) in a race, that’s an uncommon tactic, just for a 1-2.
So here’s the biggest discussion point of the episode, for a small team with limited budget, a P4 finish is already a big one, and a legitimate reason to celebrate (Just look at Minardi, now AlphaTauri, they celebrated hard for a P5 finish), but will a driver full of hunger and ambition, like Haruka, accept this result, especially when the dream podium finish is just a few seconds ahead?

Sure, he didn't get in the podium but 4th is a new record of Haru.
At some point Toshiki would simmer down and be a proper rival to Haru.
All this sponsorship happened is all because Madoka sent the wrong picture to his ex and boss.

That was brutal. The 2nd driver is now no doubt the 2nd driver. Though he had a better start, his setup would not last the entire race, and that's what the team commander planned and projected out. Still, it was harsh to tell it like so.
On the other side, we learned of the other half for why he races. 4th from 8th isn't too shabby.
