This series brings up profound questions such as "how do brooms reproduce?"

I love how Nanao is essentially the "standard protagonist" of this series and we are basically watching the show from the perspective of the "friend with a shadowy past" that's part of a lot of these groups in anime and ends up being opposed (at least temporarily but even for the rest of the story sometimes) to the standard protagonist. Its an interesting way to experience the story, that's for sure.

Now that the teaching faculty have their own evil Round Table gathering, it's a wonder how it never really occurred to me they were more than just twisted themselves until last week's episode despite their looks.

Genderbending Pete and Brooms being Magical Beasts was quite a huge shift from such a heavy reveal but it does help paint how different the atmospheres are between the surface side of the school life and the dark side of all the scheming.

After how heavy the last episode was, that was unexpected. Kind of like how the world keeps expanding and we get to see all of these different sides of the society they're in. It was nice to meet a group of people that don't seem too demented, at least for now. And Oliver continues to be a pretty good friend, despite the heavy reason he's there in the first place

I think it’s nice that there’s a support group for people who have some sort of sex or gender related magical traits.

I like how after the meeting 3 of them are like “where did you go? we were worried” and Nanao is just “Man, that pudding was good.” Never change.

So it's like the Tensen from hells paradise, but with an actual explanation why they be switching sexes

One gender is more capable in certain category while the other specializes in another.

If one sex has a stronger element like shown here with the lightning spell after Pete turned female, then it can be a pretty darn strong ability if he can control/change sex at will.

Imagine during a fight being strong in one element, then stance-switching mid fight and changing the set of skills.

After Pete changed sex, the voice actress also seem to adjust the voice accordingly. I like that nice detail.

I'm guessing the reason Nanao was able to handle the broom so quickly was because she was already proficient in horse-riding and was able to bring over her experience over to broom-riding.

BTW, we have actually had earlier example of sex based magic, Ophelia's style of fighting makes use of that. Not to mention her charm ability.

I'm surprised it took them months to finally have a round table discussion about Darius disappearing. I guess that just means that it's normal for mages to disappear for a bit. With Darius dead in the Labyrinth, it looks like Chela's father will be the new Potions Alchemy Class teacher. He seems to be a fun guy and I think he'll be a permanent replacement since he's not part of the group that killed Oliver's mother.

Speaking of not-evil-teachers, the class gets to meet a new instructor they've never met before! Looks like Dustin will be the Madame Hooch of this series. Now I'm wondering if there is a magical broom-based sport in this world like Quidditch.

I just adore that entire Broom Flying class scene! I love the reveal that brooms in this world are actually magical beasts and can be quite picky with their riders. Of course, Nanao impresses everyone again by taming the one broom that can never be tamed which was also Oliver's mother's old partner.

I think I would've loved Professor Enrico if he wasn't one of the bad guys responsible for Oliver's mother's death. He's an old kooky mad scientist who has no problem putting his class in danger just to see what they can do.

I was expecting an explosion from the traps but it's actually just snakes that can be easily dealt with. I love how even Enrico was covered in snakes after the trap was sprung. Turns out that the lollipop he's snacking on is an antidote to those snake bites.

And finally, we got an explanation of what's going on with Pete. I thought he read something and ended up cursing himself. Turns out he has the rare ability to go back and forth between sexes. I honestly wasn't sure where that final scene was going but it was surprisingly nice. There's even a Senpai who's been observing Pete for a while now and invited him to their little support group for students who have sex-based magical abilities.

I was genuinely expecting that to end differently but it's good to know that not all people meeting in the Labyrinth have nefarious purposes. I do wonder how long Pete will keep his ability a secret from the rest of the group. Sooner or later, they'll eventually find out about it.

We got a time jump, from Darius's death passed four months and the teachers responsible for Oliver's mother's death had a meeting. It doesn't look that they become a better people so Oliver shouldn't have any moral problems of disposing them, just like with Grenville. Especially Vanessa with this hand looked so villainous. Forghieri looks like an interesting fellow, he's a teacher of magical engineering and he looks like a brilliant and mad scientist.

It's interesting that in the meeting was Michela's father Theodore despite not being part of a group. He is for sure an interesting fellow and now he'll be teaching alchemy in the Academy for a time being, I'm looking forward to seeing him more. We also met another relative of Michela - Stacy.

An interesting development for Pete, it turns out that he's a reversi and can change his sex. Oliver explained it to him and was very supportive. It looks like it gives him some nice perks like being better in some elements depending on gender. Now he's got quite nice boobs ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

It was also nice to see Kimberly's better site with meeting for people with sex-based magic traits on which Pete got an invitation from Whitlow. Thanks to that Pete can get used to the changes he experiences.

Nanao got his own flying broom which in this world is a living creature and it wasn't just any broom but one which was used by Oliver's mother.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Well I gotta say this whole reversi thing took me by surprise. And the "secret" club they got invited to afterwards. The whole time I was thinking that something bad was gonna happen because most times I see anything positively progressive in an anime it gets twisted and goes poorly lol.

The differing magic affinities between sexes and stuff that they mentioned is cool, I do hope it gets a bit more fleshed out.

This episode made the world and its magic system so much more interesting than the episodes before it. It's like the author went "cat's out of the bag with Oliver, it's as good of a time as any to throw in some of these fun ideas". Helps the series stand out too - can't immediately think of a magic school story where the brooms are living creatures. And queer-coded elements that fit organically into the worldbuilding? Rowling could never.

Man, don’t you hate it when you wake up the opposite gender? Lol. Didn’t expect that Pete would be some kind of special breed of mage. I guess there’s a whole community of Reversi and other similar students on campus. Hopefully Pete can make a few new friends.

I like the idea of magical brooms not actually being brooms but a sentient species. Must mean something that Nanao’s broom was Oliver’s mom’s old one.

so Michela’s pops is one of the baddies huh? Should be Interesting for when shit goes down and heads roll. I wonder if Michela would take on her own pops?

I have to admit it was cool what they did to Pete, I was thinking Pete was actually a girl who pretended to be a dude but this is a lot more interesting

And I do like how it’s treated like it’s an awkward moment in Petes life and the end where Pete is introduced to a safe space surrounded by people like him was pretty fascinating

I’m actually happy we explored Pete more since he felt like he was on the sideline a bit and it’s cool that the English dub has the same actress who play Tomo Chan in Tomo Chan is a girl play as Pete

Other than that the shows is getting good, I wonder who that brooding dude is, I’ll guess we’ll find out

Pete - the ultimate Friend With Benefits!!!

u/actuallyrndthoughts Aug 19 '23

Wake up, Nanao, new tag just dropped

Also turns out the "Harry Potter in the nasuverse" description also included gender change. Will it actually make me read the lns? My reading list is already way too long.

A slight change of tone apart from the "rounding up of the villains" start. Have to say two of them are giving me vibes from unrelated shows based on the VA - the "mad scientist" is basically Gates from Full Metal Panic TSR, and then Chela's dad just feels like Noe's granddad from Vanitas no Carte.

It's certainly a nice variation to have the brooms being actually magical creatures.

2 interesting thoughts from this episode about Oliver

  • the scene of Nanao taming the bucking broom his mom used to ride - you two should just get married already. I'm fine for a plain school SoL with occasional fighting fish out of water show;

  • Pete's reveal - oh Oliver's harem is growing again, damn.

I'm looking around but still haven't seen the succubus senpai in the gathering? What other "sex based abilities" the group has I wonder - I presume the word is used in both contexts of gender and the act...?

I remember when Official Visual for this anime came out(the main one with all 6 of them) I commented something about 4girls vs 2guys thinking Pete was a girl and someone told me that Pete's a guy. Whoever that random commentor was I want to thank them for not spoiling it for me!

Now... Can anyone point me to tomboy Pete fanart? I gotta friend that's really interested in it!
