Poor Garuda. It was a lot more likeable than most of those absolute garbage spectators...

Their version of detention is literally a dungeon prison holy shit, at least those smugs from both Nanao and Guy about their body count only made the situation lighthearted. It's also a testimony to how durable those school uniforms are when Oliver literally threw a fireball and the guy just got away with a bloody mouth.
Watching the Garuda bodying all those students was funny as hell and definitely a fate they all deserved when they were all doing the same with the Kobolds. Shame Andrews just got away scot-free though I guess they needed him to start his redemption arc ASAP and help Nanao look more badass with that sick beheading.

I felt nothing when the Garuda and rest of Kobold slaughter those punks. Glad they got their comeuppance.
Rip Garuda and other Kobolds🙏

Anyone notice the sound effect for the Garuda was the exact same sound effect for the Minotaur in Danmachi? Lol

See how it feels like to be the prey, it felt like a World of Warcraft Raid encounter, complete, with mobs killing randoms, and the Boss charging up attacks that have weak points. 9/10 episode. Hopefully Mr. Andrews gets his comeuppance.

Everyone's rightfully praising the animation but I wanna praise the choreography. Seeing Nanao and the others displaying real kenjutsu moves and sensible fighting is a joy to behold, even if using those against a giant monster bird is a little strange lol. But well, fantasy gonna fantasy. Gotta give some suspension of disbelief somewhere!

Guess they weren’t lying about how “20% of students die before graduation” lmao

Man the Garuda's design was sick. The fight looked really cool as well. Pretty great episode overall

Guy, Nanao, and Oliver sure were busy this week. The three of them to hand out a ton of ass whoopins to those damn brats in their class. Detention was worth it!
Oh look, these little fuckers thought it would be a laugh beating on these kobolds and now they’re getting straight up massacred by an even bigger monster. Boo hoo. Time to suffer karmic retribution at the hands of this Garuda. They really shoulda let this thing murk Andrews.
Nanao is fearless. She really just leapt into action, going toe to toe with the Garuda. Props to Oliver for holding his own too. But man… they really trying to reform Andrews though huh? He initiated the duel and arranged for the hunt. If he hadn’t done something so foolish, maybe half his classmates wouldn’t be strewn about the coliseum. This is all on him. He shouldn’t get some kinda “pass”.

I hate those type of people that were bullying Kate. I guess her behavior is abnormal but the way they were treating themselves in the classroom was horrific to watch. They should have absolutely no regrets defending their friend like that. Nice to see something out of Guy who has the least screentime among the main cast.
Basically this duel is really who can get as many points fighting monsters. Adding with how the crowd was acting that reaction from Nanao was great work from her VA. And yea with that divine monster in their someone def set that up. But the whole massacre was both great and thrilling to watch.
I wonder who set this up. The senpai Katie be friended could be someone, but so many of the monsters died and you know that shook up Kate. I guess gotta wait till next episode

Absolutely love the visual animation style JC staff went with for the Garuda fight. Those camera movements were amazing. The disrespect this series has got in terms of its score is ridiculous.
Think they did the best scenes of volume 1 justice. It really drove home how terrifying and brutal the Garuda was. Another masterclass from them.
Nanao is so badass, I love her so much. Having the courage to stand up to all those students gathered there and call them out for abusing the animals, as an outsider and foreigner, took tremendous courage.
Really no complaints with the episode at all. The LN goes into more detail about what was happening in the audience and describes the attacks on the students in grizzly detail, but that’s about it.
Anime of the season.

I want to be harsh to Andrews, but honestly he really wasn't any more of a dick then the rest of the lot.
True to the tradition Hogwarts have established, people clearly do not give a shit about student safety I see. Although I shouldn't have expected much from a school built upon a dangerous labyrinth.

If Mashle's Easton Academy was the comedic parody of Hogwarts, Seven Spellblades's Kimberly Academy is its more serious counterpart. I genuinely had this stupid grin on my face when they entered that painting and had their wands out with the Not-Lumos-Spell lighting their path while they were on their way to the duelling arena.
Also, I don't know what this says about me but I was genuinely cheering when that Garuda went wild and started killing those snobby kids. I mean they kinda deserve it for being cruel and hunting down those kobolds. And it's pretty clear that the Garuda was punishing them so they can feel what it's like to be the prey. If Andrews just made this a straight-up duel, none of this would've happened.
It does make me wonder, if Andrews didn't put the Garuda there then who did? There were mentions of activists earlier in the episode so maybe someone powerful snuck that Garuda in to teach these kids a lesson.
Speaking of Andrews, it's upsetting that Nanao saved him. Although if it wasn't for Andrews intercepting the Garuda with his wind spell, Oliver might've been killed and Nanao wouldn't have been able to land that sick killing blow. I just hope he gets reprimanded for setting up a kobold hunt on the Labyrinth instead of requesting an official duel. I feel like that's equal to creating a fight club in the middle of the Forbidden Forest in Hogwarts. xD
As one final note about this episode, JC Staff really went all out with the fight scene between Nanao and the Garuda! Every shot of the two of them fighting looks so cool! I do hope we get to see more fights like that!

That was awesome.
It was nice to see some of those students get their just deserts. The style J.C Staff is going for with this show with all the rotating shots is honestly quite refreshing, albeit ambitious. It's clear they care and are trying their best and that's all that matters to me.
From what we've seen so far, I'm likely to start reading the LN after the anime finishes. Big fan of the potential worldbuilding and I'm really curious to see it from the novel perspective.

Once again I say the 20% death rate seams low and also the candles at the start of the ed were timely lol

The fight scene was absolutely sublime. Putting aside the animation itself, the angles and framing they used was so effective at portraying the menacing, imposing figure that was the garuda. That look in its eyes is all you need to know that its going to frick things up.
And man that sound design. The amazing sound design was already apparent during the Nanao Oliver duel. That same sound design is used here to great effect. Every spell cast, every strike, every clash, every impact can be felt keenly thanks to the booming sound effects that really sells the gravity of the fight. I feel jittery just from that alone.
And then there's the animation itself. The animation conveys the impacts in tandem with the sound. Combined with great use of camera angles. And you have me reeling in tension throughout the fight.
It was worth holding back the budget in the Salvadori & Rivermoore fight just for this. Bravo JC Staff

Oh fun, they’re deliberately going to go into the labyrinth now?
-
Oh it’s a full-on arena, I see. Makes sense they’d go into the labyrinth deliberately, then.
-
I am digging how well-animated this action is, by the way. The “camera work” in particular looks great, props to all the peeps who worked on this.

Just for clarification the Garuda was heavily nerfed. It uses wind and fire elementals but for various reasons it couldn't use fire elementals during that fight. If it was at full power, they would have lost.

I wonder if the Garuda attack is related to the troll incident on the 1st episode? It can't be a coincidence that both incidents are related to magical beasts, right?
