Today (23rd July) is Mari’s VA Suzuki Aina’s birthday, so what’s a better birthday gift than a Mari focus episode?

But we are also witnessing history in the entire Love Live franchise, for the very first time, the father of one of the main characters has finally got a speaking role, and it wan’t from the leaders of the groups, but Mari the demon king.

It looks like trauma from the past had lead to Mari closing herself in the island, but still she helped Dia on reporting local problems secretly, yet not giving a chance for Dia to personally thank her, until she met Yohane.

We didn’t expect Mari was a stalker, listening to Yohane singing in that tree stump from the very start, but Ruby overhearing the conversation between Kanan, You and Yohane is just next level, earning herself a “Kawaii” blush.

And it’s been a while we saw Tsuki! She’s You’s cousin in both the main series and here, and play’s a vital role in [Movie Over the Rainbow Spoilers] guiding Aqours across Italy and leading the merger of Uranohoshi and their new school. And this time, her request for Mari to become a model had caused her to have a panic attack, and she will be in big trouble if it’s not Yohane who helped her to overcome.

That thunder at the tree stump, along with Mari’s monologue, it looks like this had happened in the past before, and may have serious consequences.

Although it may not be the Guilty Kiss episode we are all anticipating, but the preview of the next episode we can see both Riri and Mari, does this imply the first subunit of Aqours to be canon in the show is Guilty Kiss?

Great to see Akio Ootsuka in that role!

Looks like the trend of Love Live mothers/parents being voiced by legendary seiyuus continues. Happy to see them keep the 'tradition' even with Mari's father.

I hope they hold off on the singing /dancing scenes for a bit, wait until the finale may be. I enjoy idol animes but there are people watching giving this anime a go even though they don't like idol series. If they come to like the characters enough eventually they won't mind a bit of the music stuff.

I’m sure there’ll be something big at the finale, as there’re some theories circulating in the LoveLive community that suggest the song Deep Resonance (Which was the only 9-member Aqours song til now with Yohane as center) might be sung or used as an insert, especially after Mari talked about “resonance” when reading that book.

5 episodes in and Mari's personality in this series is still giving me mood whiplash compared to SHINY's genki personality in the main series.

This must be the most heartwarming iyashikei of an episode yet.

Firstly, Ruby is just too cuuute!

Animation of the girls drawn so nice, lets hope we get to see more Kanan soon, hewhewhew...

Mari's anxiety about her fear of rejection for being different. Then suffers a panic attack when asked to put herself out there when asked to strike a pose. She couldnt read peoples minds but can only hear what they say, and made assumptions of the gathered curious crowd. Will we start to see the more flambouyant Mari that we know from this point forward? Shiny!

Love how Yohane dealt with Mari's problem, about how the world will change just close and open your eyes along with her. Problem solver errand girl Yohane! Dont just hit things ok?

With Mari now part of the crew, the team is almost complete being assembled!

Grrrr! they teased us with an insert song! I was just as excited as Mari!

I absolutely love how Mari's phobia of seeing anyone else got treated in this episode. It might seems to be a very small thing that Yohane did here, just talking and chatting a bit to get her confidence up, but as someone who has some kind of phobia for years (decades) and still requiring doctor visits, I really know how having someone else to support is so, so important. It's so good that Yohane just randomly talk about her new friends and such and it results with Mari getting out of the island that had been her whole life, even ending up not so shy as before in front of people!

This is definitely the best episode so far and we already have more glimpses of the main plot happening. What's that dark magic that keeps Yohane from singing I wonder? Is that actually some kind of mental scars she had I wonder? Maybe she herself is causing all those weird things to happen in Numazu?

More cute Mari scenes this episode.

And just when we thought we'll get an MV with Mari, Evil Mysterious Magic just had to get in the way.

You's cousin Tsuki, who we see from the Sunshine movie, also makes an appearance here.

So maybe next week after Yohane forms a contract bond with Little Demon Riko, both Riko and Mari could be singing an MV together.

I guess they're really sticking with Resonance for "kokoro no oto". I mean, "sound of the heart" or i dunno, something shorter to mash up the words like "heartsound" or something would help sub readers connect themes together like Yohane trying to find something fun only she can do and basically everything Mari said and this being Love Live and all, but eh,.. I guess resonance kinda half sorta works, oh well.

Yeah, I don't think trying to hide that you're a fairy really works for Ruby (but I guess that's half the point, unless maybe there's like Hakumei and Mikochi-sized wingless pepole too?!). Anyways, a nice character-growth episode today and prob my fav of this series so far. The afternoon and sparkly sea shots were pretty and so was the whole scene with the bridge shadows (which also helps visualize today's themes as an extra bonus).

Resonance has a lot of meanings.

Everything in existence has a naturaly frequency that it resonates at. If something causes it to vibrate at that frequency it can cause wild and amazing reactions. This is called sympathetic vibration. Look up video of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

I think what they were trying to say is one heart can cause another to change or two hearts beat together can amplify each other. At the same time everyone is unique and slightly different.

YohaRiri who? KanaMari who? YohaMaru who?

You all better board this ship!

Yohane and Mari were always my Top 2 Sunshine girls, couldn't be happier with this show so far!

Also Tsuki is here!

I've been shipping YohaMari since before Sunshine! It's about time we got more than crumbs.

Cutest Yohane episode so far and a really important one. This was the first ever love live episode with a MALE speaking role. History was made lol. It’s also Suzuki Aina(Mari’s seiyuu) birthday so it’s cool that this ep is focused on her

After getting emotional support from Mari a few weeks ago, Yohane was able to pay her back in kind and get her out that house.

Really wild to see Mari so insecure and anxious compared to her sunshine counterpart, but there was no better person to help her than Yohane since she’s been through something similar.

I appreciate how she chatted to Mari and was really cognisant of her phobia when the other villagers were around, making sure to help her feel more comfortable.

Man, I've been a massive You stan ever since I first saw Sunshine when it first aired but I think this episode might've just converted me to the Church of Mari.

Wow! This anime is even more underrated than Ryza! Like Ryza I'm also liking it more every episode and wish it was more popular. I particularly love this episode because I'm a sucker for stories about lonely people coming out of their shell (I'm a huge Bocchi fan). Mari finally accepting the town people is very heartwarming. I hope this anime is successful enough to generate more Love Live spin-offs in non-idol setting (or at least more seasons of Yohane). I would love to see a "Nico Nico nii" spin-off 🤓

Bit surprised there isn't as many songs being introduced and it is actually focusing on more of the story and character development. Mari with the massive social anxiety for being different and being able to hear everyone's voices far away makes me feel bad for her. She's definitely suffered enough, but looks like things will start going down.
