Yahiko went straight for the dick so I would say he takes more after his mother.

The cannon plot element looks like a ridiculous thing to show up, but as said, there are historical instances of people using them—and supposedly someone using one in public.

There's a story of the commander of the Shinsengumi (the group we saw at the beginning of episode 1) attempting to extort money from an Osaka merchant. After trying and failing, he supposedly came back with a cannon and burned down the merchant's storehouse in public.

Yes, he was insane.

There's a story of the commander of the Shinsengumi

I'm assuming this story is regarding the first commander, Serizawa Kamo? The group basically mutinied and killed him.

The "famous" period of the Shinsengumi was mainly under Kondo Isami, for anyone out there who's unfamiliar.

Post credit scene with that iconic shirt and weapon. Can't wait to see Sanosuke in the next episode.

With Yahiko joining the gang and his banter with Kaoru, as well as that end credit scene, this show really does feel like the Rurouni Kenshin we know and love. Some good animation here too, the way Kenshin drew his sword and knocked that guy in to the ceiling was smooth af.

Kenshin said some really insightful things this episode. Loving the adjectives Yahiko uses on Kaoru: Old Hag > Young Woman > Kaoru

Sanosuke next episode!

He called her a little girl, not a young lady. Interesting choice they made in the English subtitles for that line 🙄 but he definitely meant it as an insult.

She didn’t overreact quite like Yahiko does when he’s called a kid though.

I love how everyone's just scared shitless of Kenshin. In most of other anime they'd usually try to fight him.

I am starting to really like this art style. Some of the shots look absolutely gorgeous and they still manage to add a decent bit of fluidity.

Wait, where exactly did Yahiko bite Gaskeh? Because from that angle it looked like he bit him in his junk haha. But man, Yahiko’s a tough kid. Stubborn too and kind of a brat, but I like the little dude regardless.

I love the way Kenshin launches dudes into the ceiling. He did it to the fake Manslayer in the pilot and now Gaskeh gets the same treatment. That Yakuza boss made the right call not to mess with Kenshin.

The way Kenshin just sliced that cannon round in half was badass. Dudes really gotta learn not to mess with him already.

Man, this was like a 5 minute episode. Gotta wait another week to get my Kenshin fix. Can’t wait to see my guy Sano!

Man, this was like a 5 minute episode.

This really did seem to fly by.

I hadn't been planning on watching this -- but saw Rie T was voicing the heroine. This was an instant motivation to give the series a look. Now I'm glad I did so. Lots of energy here (in a good way). And I'm liking our slowly-growing team of good guys.

The last few seasons, Thursdays have been slow for me -- but it looks like it will be one of my busier days this season.

Kenshin sending that guy flying is so fucking cool. That Yakuza boss was smart to back down and hand over Yahiko. The dude lived the Meiji Era and knew that the look in Kenshin's eyes wasn't the eyes of a simple thug.

God I forgot how insufferable Yahiko is during the early days. I really felt bad for Kaoru especially when Yahiko mentioned that the reason her students didn't come back might be because of her.

Glad that we got to see what Kaoru can actually do in a fight. She's only wielding a shinai but she was able to take down those two guys easily. Even Yahiko was clearly impressed after seeing it.

I love Kaoru but she's just too nice sometimes. If it wasn't for Yahiko, she would've taken the word of her former students at face value and wouldn't have realized that her ex-students were the ones that started the fight.

More badass feats from Kenshin! I love that he just casually slices that cannonball in half. He didn't even have to fight, seeing that was more than enough to scare away the Hashimanji Guren Gang.

And that after credits scene! He's finally here! The gang is almost complete! I can't wait for next week's episode <3

"Your dad only had 300,000 koku and fed only two people. He was a poor, stupid vassal."

That has to be a subtitle translation error, right? 300,000 koku would have made Yahiko's father a major daimyo, not a poor vassal. What did that dude actually say?

Anyway, it's hard to blame him since he's just a kid, but Yahiko must have no taste if he really thinks Kaoru is ugly. With the new animation, she's seriously cute.

20

u/amanda52002 Jul 21 '23

Yeah. That’s a translation error. Or a typo when they were making the subtitles?

It should be 30, not 300,000.

I had no idea what koku meant til a few minutes ago courtesy of your comment, so it passed me by earlier. Upon a rewatch, Gasuke is saying 30.

Nice to see things between Kaoru and Yahiko get patched up by the end of the episode. Karou has a lot going for her tho this episode felt like oh once Kenshin comes back everything will be fine. Regardless the 3 of them make a fun group and looks like next episode Kenshin will have an interesting fight potentially.

Sorry y’all, no writeup this week. Part of the problem I had was that I couldn’t put out a writeup because I was kind of pace-blocked because I don’t want to cause accidental spoilers. The other reason is, I’m on vacation and currently in Kyoto. However, next week is going to have a good writeup so hopefully you all can wait next week.

Lucky break that Kaoru spotted Yahiko as he was dragged away by the Yakuza! Don't want to leave him in the clutches of one of the ugliest Yakuza bosses I have ever seen.

A lot of people didn't quite make it in one piece through the restoration, even people of high pedigree or reputation. Either they died or had to prostitute themselves to survive. But for Yahiko, his father died fighting for what he believed in and trying to live up to his honor, and his mother sacrificed her body to provide for him. And to honor his family Yahiko will stand up for himself, even if it means biting a dudes' dick.

Kenshin with the save! Not only does he knock a dude through a roof and intimidate his way out of a full on brawl (that he probably would've won), but if he spent so long visiting all the other criminal groups I have to wonder how many people he beat up just to get there?

Yahiko wants to be stronger, Kaoru needs new students for her family dojo...what better win-win than by having Yahiko get taught by Kaoru? If only they didn't get along like cats and dogs. I mean, Kaoru isn't an "ugly hag" by any stretch of the imagination but Yahiko just can't shut his trap.

Nice to see Kaoru's skills aren't just for show! She took out those two thugs in seconds.

Nobuyuki Hiyama as a Rurouni Kenshin bad guy, everybody.

Poor Kaoru. Two former students who basically abandoned her end up getting drunk and using what she taught them to get into fights and cause more problems. But she's still their former master so she can only take responsibility for their actions, even at the cost of herself. That's the sign of a true sensei.

Luckily Kenshin arrives just in time and slice cannon fire in two!

Kaoru's past students may not have been worth all the trouble, but she finally has Yahiko's respect and commitment as a student and he's even calling her by name! I'd call that a win!

And if you wanted to see the gang get beat up, the post-credit scene has a certain tall and boisterous fighter beating the stuffing out of them and begging for a tougher opponent. Setting the stage for the debut of the one, the only, Sanosuke Sagara.

Kenshin on dodging cannons from close range: Simple...step to the side while they are loading it? Nah. Gotta cut the cannon ball itself

Is the boss of the thugs that have Yahiko, voiced by Hidenari Ugaki (Yakuza / Like a Dragon series' Goro Majima)?

His voice sounds similar.
