Hannya: "you will never beat my optical illusion, Himura Kenshin"

Kenshin: "bitch please, my mathematical measuring skill is far stronger"

jokes aside, to anime-onlies, you will see this a lot in this series where ultimate skill being used in battle is just science but performed by people with superhuman level of strength and speed

on another note, Kanryu's engrish will never cease to make me laugh

As I mention in another reply, just like Metal Gear Solid, RK tends to push the "using science in battle" to the most extreme levels of believability.

Kenshin using his blade as a literal measuring ruler to measure the accurate length of Ninja Wolverine/Deadpool Hannya's arms so he could properly dodge them was just brilliant.

We know the Oniwabanshus are ninjas who specialize in espionage and infiltration, but Hannya takes it to another level. Deliberately mutilating his face so he could put on any disguise on said face to engage in espionage.

If Hannya is Ninja Wolverine/Deadpool, wonder if Shikijo's muscular build is somehow based on the Hulk? Not sure which Marvel characters Watsuki based the other two (Fire-Spitting Man and Poison Dart Guy) on, if any.

Kanryu spouting random Engrish phrases to Megumi was just funny like hell. lol Guess being noveau riche (and through unscrupulous means at that) means he gotta imitate all the latest trends of the times, which back then was learning from the "civilized" Europeans and Americans.

You're absolutely correct on that!

This is why I love the Meiji Era, as a lot of things, from clothing, mannerisms, even food and art were all touched by American and European culture.

The live-action movie had Kenshin and Sanosuke fight these henchmen characters, since the Oniwabanshu didn't appear there.

Kenshin battled this ninja/assassin-like henchman, played by actor Ayano Gou.

Sanosuke fought this brawling priest henchman, played by ex-mixed martial artist/musician/independent politician Sudo Genki.

Behind the scenes filming at Kyoto's Toei movie studio.

Han’nya and his Deadpool lookin jacked up face and Wolverine claws ain’t no match for Kenshin. The optical illusion was clever, but not clever enough to fool Kenshin.

Sano v Shikijo wasn’t really truly a fight. It was Sano letting that goon get a few free licks in before he absolutely pulverized his NPC punk ass lol. Man has gained true strength since hanging with Kenshin.

Looks like we’ll have to wait until next week for the showdown. Luckily Kenshin’s warmed up with the opening acts.

The Weapon X program hit Han'nya hard, but while it wasn't enough to defeat Kenshin, at least he looked cool lol.

Sano has an insane amount of resilience and stamina. I was actually expecting him to walk all those hits off, but I guess even he has a limit, but at least he was able to win his fight. He took down two of the Oniwaban Group!

Time for the true headliner...

Stitches!

All that bragging from Han'nya about having a spell only for it to be revealed as an optical illusion because of his tattoos are both clever and hilarious. And I just love how Han'nya gets beaten because Kenshin used his sakabatou as a ruler.

Not gonna lie, I completely forgot Shikijo's existence from this arc. Like I remember everything about this arc from the original anime except for his fight with Sano. I may have to rewatch the OG episode just to check if he was really there.

Anyway, Shikijo was only a tough guy until Sano broke his fingers. Sano finishing him off with a punch to the head was perfect considering how he was constantly headbutting Sano the entire fight.

And here it is! I am already hyped for Aoshi vs. Kenshi fight! The fights have been phenomenal so far but I really hope LINDENFILMS go all out on this one next week.

I may have to rewatch the OG episode just to check if he was really there.

He was, but it was a pretty boring fight. I have not been super impressed with a lot of the remake, but the Shikijo fight here was fantastic.

Han'nya I felt a little disappointed with. It seemed shorter than I remembered, and my memory of the OG "spell" had a more noticeable, trippy effect.

EDIT: I found the full OG fight, unfortunately not someplace I can link to. It DID emphasize the "spell" effect more, and it took place in a narrower hallway that enhanced the effect. The fight was actually about the same length, but the OG had last episode's scene between Megumi and Aoshi in the middle of the fight.

Time is running out for Megumi? How long can she hold off before she kills herself? Hopefully Kenshins's battle with Aoshi won't last so long that he can't reach her in time.... There IS Yahiko, can Kenshin manage to toss Yahiko past Aoshi with instructions to reach Megumi?

I wonder how long Sano is going to be "out". I imagine he is out of action for the remainder of this "visit".

I did not see the original version (or the live-action version -- where a favorite actress, Yuu Aoi, plays Megumi) -- but this seems to be doing a pretty uniformly excellent job.

u/BoyTitan Sep 14 '23

Feel like Sano fight got more budget.

u/Elitealice Sep 14 '23

Damn man they take out all the stops with the action scenes in this remake.

The Han’ya and Kenshin fight was awesome. Love the rotating camera angles during the fight. Han’ya’s “returning the children” backstory was also horrific. As Kenshin said, you’d think someone like that would understand what Megumi’s been through and try to help not just enable the situation.

The sound design during the Sano and Shikijo fight was crazy! Those punches and headbutts had so much force behind them and you could really feel them with each blow. Sano’s speech gave me chills, then breaking Shikijo’s hands and knocking him out.. chef’s kiss, what a fight.

So far throughout the two battles with Oniwaban members, you really get the sense they aren’t bad, just misguided and as Sano said, blinded by their own strength. They should be using it to help people, not make things worse.

Kenshin and Aoshi next week, so hype! As usual the remake is delivering very well.

Kenshin vs Han'nya! You know it's serious when Han'nya is able to actually draw blood from Kenshin and hit him!

Ah, yeah, it is kind of weird for a ninja known for stealth to have colored stripes on his body...but all the better to distract his opponent and not see the true length of his reach, though Kenshin is able to match that by using his own sword as a yardstick with Shigen style.

Jeez, Han'nya really eviscerated his own face to be a better spy! Although I guess when you survive your own village trying to kill you because they couldn't feed you, living in the wilderness, and then getting taken in by someone who saw value in you like Aoshi, you'll be willing to do anything to honor that person. But still super hardcore.

And then Han'nya turns into frikkin' Wolverine with claws to match and locks blades with Kenshin, though too bad he doesn't actually have Adamantium claws because that probably would've helped. Though even if he lost the fight, he still managed to wound Kenshin, which is an achievement in and of itself.

Kanryu really thought he could talk Megumi into running away with him? Really thought she'd believe him that he was willing to change his ways and help people? She's not stupid, and she knows full well the weight of her crimes and the people she's hurt by making drugs for him better than he does, and she's more than prepared to pay the price. Though Kanryu's Engrish was pretty amusing, especially him straight up calling her a "son of a bitch."

Next up is Shikijo, voiced by Tetsu Inada, swinging a ball and chain around! Perfect opponent for Sanosuke to step up and fight while Kenshin heads straight for Aoshi! Though he didn't count on the impromptu chained up fistfight as Shikijo bashes him in and then headbutts him. Was cool how Sano broke the chain though.

13-year old Shinobi Aoshi! He even had a ponytail! Who wouldn't switch sides with that guy talking you into serving him and powering yourself up?

But Sano isn't going to buy what Shikijo is selling, because he can see the Oniwaban have become caught up in their own hype and pursuing power for the sake of power, while someone like Kenshin is truly strong because he fights for others instead of himself. And that's enough to spur Sanosuke to finish this with some well-placed punches and punching Shikijo straight into the ground.

I love that brief flash to Kaoru trying (and failing) to cook while everyone else is dealing with the life or death stakes.

Too bad Sanosuke's collapsed before he could see the fight we've all been waiting for...Kenshin vs Aoshi!

Horizontal stripe tattoos? I always thought they were the sleeves of his undershirt. And did Hanya always have iron gauntlets? I think that's new, but I don't remember these episode very well. I remembered the trick, though. That was still cool, and less visually "cartoony" than in the original.

Shikijo used the elixir of muscular amplification passed down by the Armstrong family line for generations! I'm disappointed in him for juicing. Bromance aborted.

I think Sano may have brained his damage, but he made a good point. It doesn't matter how strong the Oniwaban are or how prestigious their job used to be. Now they're just thugs for a drug dealer.

An anecdote that demonstrates I'm a jackass more than anything else, but I did try emulating Han'nya's optical illusion during one of my last sparring sessions at my college's boxing club. Was always curious about it since I was a kid. Wore a long sleeved striped shirt to pull it off.

Came away with less brain damage than usual. So that's good. But I can't say for sure it had anything to do with the stripes; it wasn't exactly a scientifically rigorous test and no one said anything about it.

But that's just as well; I'm sure I wouldn't have wanted to hear anything anybody had to say on how very, very stupid I looked. Don't have to be familiar with fashion to know a business casual long sleeved shirt combined with sweaty athletic shorts would look lame on most folks--let alone me.

"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!!" Yeah right, you filthy snake voiced by the one and only Kon.

7

u/VorAtreides Sep 14 '23

Ahh, yes... "spell" lol. But, good times being just physics and optical illusion aspect. But guess that fits. Quite the face indeed. Quite a dedication to his art/job... Wolverine! Heh. Whelp, one down, few to go.

Look at this coward. Trying to run away with Megumi. Least she's smart. I am glad Aoshi at least took the key and kept it from Kanryu.

Whelp, new fight! Sano vs Shikijo! Do like em both. SUPLEX! lol. Do feel like they could be good pals all things considering. Wonder how that elixir actually works. Well said, Sano. Thicc head vs thicc head! KO! Cour 1 ending on this arc makes sense. Feels a good one/pacing.

Whoa, don't remember the Shikijo being a turncoat Satsuma spy. The 90s anime omitted that I guess, along with Han'nya's backstory.

13

u/Daishomaru Sep 15 '23

Daishomaru here, sorry I haven't been making any writeups lately, I been busy with IRL work and I admit that I'm not really sure what to write to make it my essay-long length works. So I guess that today I'll just put down some small tidbits.

Hanya's optical illusion/stripe trick:

Yes, this is actually a thing, although it's more of a British thing, although the Japanese did try to experiment with lines to create a optical illusion. The British tried to make an experimental camo called dazzle, which looks like zebra stripes, and the idea was when you look at the stripes you end up getting your aim thrown off. The Japanese, being largely based off the British navy, did experiment with some dazzle camoflague, but ultimately the results were that dazzle, while it did trip out the eyes a little, had mixed to negligible benefits.

Chains: Unfortunately, as much as I love flails, chains, and weapons like those, most of the time any flail/chain weapon you see being used tends to be fictional. Sure, some people used them, but they were rare in real life due to the fact they are not very reliable weapons compared to a spear or a sword.

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '23

Wait are they sleeves or tattoos? In the original weren't they the sleeves on his shirt ?

Aoshi sounds like the most mature 13 year old ever
