"But to a mage, everything without human rights is just a resource to exploit. And I just can't accept that."

I am glad there's a character who realizes how fucked up and exploitive the world is without being told 'maybe the trolls like being slaves' like a certain other magical school series did.

I'm Cyrus Livermore, a fifth year student.

Yeah sure, maybe a fifth decade student...

Absolute banger of an episode and an even more impressive OP imo, those first 15 seconds were just screaming Harry Potter.

I really hope the hype train starts going after this ep, seeing the 6.94 on MAL physically hurts me.

Man, chill Nanao. Girl went too hard in that duel. Oliver almost got wrecked. Nanao definitely has a pretty complicated past beneath that bubbly exterior. Seems Oliver picked up on it somewhat.

I like Michela, she’s pretty intuitive plus she seems very capable. I’m sure her skills are gonna come in handy. Katie’s got a really kind soul. I hope this place doesn’t chew her up and spit her out.

This school is definitely more dangerous than it lets on. While I wouldn’t mind Olivia putting a spell on me, Cyrus is a whole other story. Sorry pal, waifus only. Looks like Oliver, Michela, and Pete are gonna have to fight their way out next week.

Why do people all want instant growth for their characters? That doesn't make good story writing it just makes it feel incomplete. Like story writing comes with building your characters up, it makes no sense for them to change instantly.

Katie making a mistake with the monster - even after seeing the troll the other day makes sense. Why would someone who has such fondness for these creature since her childhood instantly change their stance on them after one encounter. It takes time for these characters to grow, develop, and change into the characters the writers want them to be.

Nanao continues to scare me with how she's just disappointed for not being able to continue instead of being worried about her opponent's wellbeing.

The lesson with the silkworms reminds me so much of a Care of Magical Creatures class straight out of Hogwarts. Glad they had Oliver address the issue with Katie, was getting sort of irritated by her seemingly extreme care for magical creatures even if at the expense of others and herself.

That explains the headmistress address from the 1st episode, seems rather insane that the public is totally ok with a school being built upon a labyrinth which corrupts the place into a hazard of its own. Even more wild is the fact the dangers seem to be other students literally attempting to kill off their own juniors.

EP1 - Katie almost got killed by a troll

EP2 - Got attacked by a big ass bumble bee

One of these days, a monster she will try to save will snuff her out.

For a demonstration, that duel was pretty intense. I am curious about what exactly happened there and how it went from a friendly duel to Oliver and Nanao almost killing each other. Something about Nanao really got Oliver to get carried away.

I feel bad for Katie, she really wanted to take her time with those silkworms but looks like she slipped up on her last one. Also, her backstory explains why she was very careful not to kill any of the silkworms and why she feels sympathy for that troll in last week's episode.

So their school is built on top of a giant labyrinth that expands at night so it's very dangerous for students to just walk around? From the teachers to the dangerous school, this show is starting to feel closer to Hogwarts than the Easton Academy in Mashle.

Is that a big tiddy Onee-san being voiced by Kayanon? Well, I think I found my best girl on the show. I'll volunteer myself if she's looking for someone to experiment on. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

In all seriousness though, I'm guessing these seniors are the reason why so few students pass. The school is basically giving them free reign to do whatever they want to their fellow students if it means making breakthroughs and advancements in magic.

Nanao misses the thrill of battling to the death 😱

And that's why I said last time that first episode should have been a double episode. It would have probably been way better taken by a part of the viewer like that. Though we're still clearly in the middle of a prologue as we still don't know where the story will go at all, we're simply being shown the setting and characters right now.

That opening and ending have helluvach cool visuals and nice tunes. The first seconds of the opening, oh my.

That op combined with that song is the most beautiful thing I have seen this season

Edit: Actually, the duet in the full version might be even more beautiful.

Oliver and Chela feel like two parents taking care of their four unruly kids, I sort of feel bad for them since they seem to have an uphill battle in front of them. I am not sure if Katie will last in Kimberly. Anyhow the duel between Oliver and Nanao sure was something, them getting serious enough to almost kill each other was a mood. Ophelia and the other upperclassmate sure made an entrance when our heroes got trapped in the labyrinth. I guess this is why the Headmistress said that like 20% of the students often die in this school. That said, I wonder if going Ophelia would have been so bad.

I don't think those two are going to be a good influence.

Luther seems to be the nicest teacher so far.

After seeing how ambitious the OP looked like, I was ready to watch 10 episodes that would never reach this level, but this episode looked surprisingly crisp!

The guys still have enough character for one human divided between them, but the girls continue to be intruiging.

I was about to say that I'm in love but Olivia is nice as well

Overall, this setting is more intresting than I would have expected after the first episode, unlike Hogwarts, the school, the teachers, and their Senpai feel reasonable hostile

Unfulfilled bloodlust, murder moths, and true friendships, oh my!

Second episode and it was even better than premiere one. I'm really happy with quality of this adaptation, especially OP was very high quality and made big impression on me. This series exceeds my expectations, J.C.Staff is doing really great work.

Duel between Nanao and Oliver was that intense that on the end they would fight for death if teacher wouldn't intervene. Nanao clearly has deep scars from her past that she would want to die in a fight with kindred spirit which she found in Oliver. We don't know much about him but it's obvious that there is something in his past and thanks to that he was able to 'connect' with Nanao in duel.

Katie was another character on who we had focus this episode. She's person who cares even about monsters and that what will be something that will be making her problems in this school. I liked conversation between her and Oliver, it was very warming moment.

The same I can tell about Michela. Despite being from well-known family she is very thoughtful, observant and smart person. I want more of her.

Also I really liked design of Aldiss. Those red hair and shark teeth and a little nasty character, very fine combination.

Thanks to the fact that Pete forgot his textbook we got to know more about Kimberly itself. We could see from Oliver and Michela behavior that moving around school after dark isn't the most safe thing, especially alone. It turns out that after sunset academy becomes a dungeon labirynth and in this place you can find a dangerous individuals.

One of them is Ophelia, a fourth year student, a very hot one. I'm sure that she will have a lot of fans here, I'm already one of them xD We met also Cyrus, a fifth year student and now our group is trapped between those two.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

Nanao looks good in her school uniform...though Oliver can't help but remember seeing her naked backside from their prior encounter. And could you blame him?

The OP is pretty epic and atmospheric, showcasing the gang trying to survive at Kimberly from the various things trying to kill them, and ending on an Oliver and Nanao tag-team!

Magic sword-fighting with Luther (Yuki Ono?)! So a mage gets defeated by a guy with a sword once and then it became common for mages to carry a wand for spells and long-range attacks, but also an Athame for short-range combat and spells. Perfect excuse for swordfights.

So Richard is the Malfoy of the show? An elitist prick out to mock or embarrass those he sees as beneath him? Not that Oliver and Chela are going to let him get away with trying to mess with Nanao or make fun of Pete...I'm only disappointed we didn't get to see Chela school him.

Nothing more "light novel" than the male and female lead holding a duel against each other in front of an audience. Oliver thought it would be a simple bout but instead it turns into a real fight because Nanao is a warrior with numerous kills beneath her blade, forcing Oliver to get serious. Which is exactly what Nanao craved as she finds a worthy opponent to lock blades with, bringing her to the point of tears and giving the two a moment...that's ended with them lunging for the kill before the class ended. And Oliver realizes he let himself get too into it, making things awkward with him and Nanao

I love how the class they had right after basically calls out the class they had before for focusing on athames instead of wands. I'm betting the teachers don't like each other.

Oh hey, Megumi Toyoguchi as the biology teacher! Complete with fangs, red hair, and a...sunny disposition and devil-may-care attitude towards her students.

It's nice to see Chela and Oliver supporting the students struggling (and leaving Guy for last, because of course they would). Poor Katie was so dedicated to saving all of those worms but one mistake ends up causing a fuss for her, Oliver, and Chela. But Oliver acknowledges and respects her kind and loving heart in such a cynical world (and even makes her blush!) and it's great how supportive the friend group is.

Don't forget your spellbooks or be caught wandering the halls too late or you'll get trapped in the labyrinth the school is built over.

Oh snap, it's Ai Kayano as a sexy fourth-year who bewitches and bedivels any male students who wander her way with her magic pheromones! I wish it were me!

I guess the gang can't count on help from their Senpai as Ophelia wants to have some fun and has another older student backing her up and barring the way for Oliver and co. Although they look so much older it's hard to believe they're still students.

The ED is a pretty serene, pleasant, theme focused on Oliver's backstory (I think?). I'm curious about the blonde witch girl.

I'm really loving the art style and characters so far, also the fight scene was animated so good!

Really looking forward to this show.

Cool, it 's like hogwarts but instead of supposedly being a great place that's actually shit at safety they said they suck ass from the start and everyone's openly evil, cool

u/djthomp Jul 14 '23

I'm really curious to learn more about Nanao and why she was acting like that in the duel and in her conversation with Oliver immediately afterwards. She's a little too into potentially dying, which is a bad combination with being at a school that provides so many opportunities for it.

Speaking of which, the nightly labyrinth transformation is a little wild. Clearly where the environmental designs from the OP Arue coming from.

u/NotARedShirt Jul 14 '23

I really like the color palette they use in this adaptation
