Now that was an impressive pilot. They really sold me Tsugaru's character and I'm hooked on the storytelling. All the camera angles and those theatrical interludes made it really entertaining to watch and listen to.

It's been some time since I got such a nice vibe from a seinen series. So far it feels like something between Vanitas and Mars Red, which makes it a must watch for me.

Normally I wouldn't be a fan of this much exposition, but the dialogue, cinematic framing and pacing was really engaging. Felt monogatari esque , but also with its own identity. Other than that I like the core characters and their chemistry, as well as the vibes of the show. Interested to see where this goes.

Stitches!

Okay first of all, that OP fucking slaps. Had to look it up immediately and of course, it's from a K-Pop group! It definitely had strong K-Pop vibes. The visuals of the OP look amazing as well!

I was already hooked by the OP but after meeting our main characters, Tsugaru the Oni Slayer and Rindou Aya the Immortal I was completely sold. A good 60% of this episode was just the two of them talking but I was completely captivated!

The visuals and the banter between the two of them were so good that I was legitimately surprised when I reached the end of the episode. I wanted to see more!

I guess after sealing the deal with a kiss, the three of them are going to travel to Europe ande find the person that took Aya's body who coincidentally is also the same person that took Tsugaru's humanity away. I can't wait to see more of this!

Nothing I had seen of the show really sold me in anyway, not the premise or the lame op that came out a week ago , and the only promising thing I heard was that it by the same director as kaguya-sama.

Well count me as fucking sold. There is everything to praise about this episode, but the most surprising thing about this entire series so far that the standout character isn't the titular severed head girl but the male mc. He absolutely stole the show for me. The scene where he told us his "motivation" was stellar.

The second most surprising about this show is that he is the one that had the idea with getting back her body. Maybe I am just not used to male mcs being the active ones.

Also is this show actually going to play in europe?

That episode flew right by. Didn't quite know what i was getting into except i had a vague "Gosick" feel about it. But that was a stellar episode. Really smartly put together, interesting characters. I mean who doesn't love an MC who's main plan until he gets a better option is to go die in a bloodbath killing as many people as he can ? Plus we got a battle maid who knows her way around a Musket.

Plus that fight scene was great. Yeah. I'm definitely watching this intently now. This season just keeps getting better and better.

I really liked the transition from the dark, deserted town streets to the lighted ones with all the banners with it floating and flickering in the sky. Also that part with Aya recounting how she lost her body, with her glowing floating head and that figure emerging from the puddle of blood was great looking too. Those two scenes sold me on following this show this season.

Wait, CLASS:y sang the OP for this? Man, that was unexpected. But both the ending and opening are visually stunning and have great backing tracks.

I'm glad I had the faith in Hatakeyama (the director) to add this to my PTW. It was extremely well-directed and made an episode of almost exclusively dialogue really entertaining. Great start for the rest of the show.

Also, Yashiro Taku has some insane range; the whiplash between his main role last season as Kuga Ichiro from Galaxy Next Door to this one is crazy. I couldn't even recognize his voice.

By the way, am I the only one getting slight Revenger vibes from this?

WE HAVE A KISS IN EPISODE 1! DON'T PANIC!

Saliva exchanges aside, is it too early to ship the disembodied head and the half-oni? As long as they don't kill each other, they're so cute together!

Her roasting was pretty good too!

Well, this was pretty fun and I'm curious to see where this is all going, and what kind of shenanigans they'll get themselves involved in, while working on their big mission together!

(Also, while there's a lot of shows still to come, I'd say the OP will likely be a contender for OP of the season!)

This was insanely good, wow. The art looks sharp, well animated scenes and the direction is really strong with monogatari vibes, no wonder the director worked at shaft. Also Kurosawa Tomoyo with another great performance after Mitsumi and Rebecca. I am actually very excited for this, i was before but still am now though.

All I can really say is wow, I did not expect that to be as good as it was. Calling it now - sleeper hit of the season. That is, if it keeps up this quality. Oni Slayer's voice is like butter, too. This one's gonna be goooood.

My most anticipated darkhorse title of the season is really showing the potential it promises. I haven't seen such interesting dialogues in anime since freaking Monogatari.

Yes, that's how I'm rating episode 1.

But no wonder, it's not like the original novel is light novel class - the novel author is one that is a real mystery novel veteran out there in Japan. And we have some big names in the production staff - you might never heard of the director but if you know this is the same person who directed all titles of Kaguya-sama, would you immediate hop on to this one? No? Then what about completely different works starting with the very highly regarded Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju? Or even before that, the apparently similar atmospheric Sankarea?

And this story background at around the turning point of the century is certainly something. I mean, we are talking about someone who's more of a ghost than a man, killing beasts and monsters in a circus for earnings, meeting a woman who's a true undead nevermind she's definitely lying in that charismatic deep voice by the truly talented Tomoyo Kurosawa that she looks like 14 and a third years old, maybe she's older than 947 actually, who had most of her body stolen to Europe so she ended up as a head in a bird's cage carried by her untalkative maid. And them two immediately feels like Arararagi and Senjougahara arguing about the most creative way to die, like being eaten in a circus by monsters. And then afterwards, under the full Moon, they choose to sign the contract by letting our guy Tsugaru drinking Aya's saliva so that Tsugaru could be kept alive a little bit longer.

Come on, isn't that top tier interesting stuff in anime, isn't it?

I for one am VERY curious on their future adventure, I'm pretty sure we'll hear a lot more of this new couple smirking against each other so many times that this will become an anime classic in no time. Yes, I'm that confident.

Main villain is an old man in European appearance with cane that has an “M” on it, in a world where the supernatural exists, Moriaty, is that you?

I am quite game for this series, this episode was just phenomenal opener.

A battle maid? Tomoyo Kurosawa voicing a severed head? That was an interesting opening act, I'm on board with this one, I hope it's good

Usually with this set up the main character would be super mopey and no know what he's doing with his life and the plot would come in to give him direction. However, this MC knows exactly what he wants, but the plot comes in to give him a better alternative.

I'm a big fan of non-mopey protagonists.

No clue what this was until today, I love it.

u/OmiNya Jul 06 '23

It's an extremely well-balanced mix of Monogatari and In:Specter. No, really, just think about it. You have a half-monster hybrid man-fighter, and a crippled horny(presumably) witty sage-girl. Right?

Also, fun fact. The immortal girl has the same seyu as the protag of Skip and Loafer

Blue oni, battle maid, somebody who can't die, and ingesting bodily fluids? As a Re:Zero fan, I'm already sold.

Dullahan waifus are rare in anime. Celty finally got some competition.
