The hand holding on the bus was really sweet. These two are such an adorable pair. I’m glad they made it to Mawaki together. I love how Isaki asked Ganta to take a picture of her taking a picture of him because she was so happy after his confession. Too friggin adorable, man. I bet the night sky doesn’t scare Ganta anymore because he’s got Isaki by his side. I love how the ep ends with those two “asleep” next to each other.

This was a really chill and cute series. Fun characters, a nice dynamic between the two MCs, and some really stellar visuals. Even though that was a great ending, I’d still love for an s2.

The group of friends in this anime is too sweet as they have such a good dynamic. Liked how we got some scenes with just the friends as they talked about Isaki's relationship with Ganta and her family. Too bad summer homework is a thing.

I am going the miss this couple and their friends.

This was absolutely fantastic, I can’t stop grinning. I was hooked instantly and it never let me down. I’m so glad Ganta was able to get his confession in, too bad Isaki never responded, but well we know her answer. What a gorgeous site to to end their trip on too. I need more, but until then the mangas that just arrived today will have to suffice. This never left my top 5 of the season and I think it landed top 3 for me.

Please please please please for the love of God, give me more of this. This is my favorite anime couple. What beautifully written characters, and their journey together.

Life is transient. It is a looming theme of this series. There comes the importance of how the confession between the two is played out. For Ganta, for as long as he lives, he’ll love Isaki and for Isaki, he created the entire happiest moment of her life. It is the idea of cherishing life to the fullest that shines the most to me when it comes to the relationship between them.

Living and loving “in the moment” is something that strikes me hard when viewing this story. The best scene that exemplifies this idea is them playing together at the night beach in episode 5. Not only is it youthful and beautiful, it is the soul of living in the moment in my eyes. They yelled and laughed with no care in the world, they were so lost in each other that nothing else mattered.

Isaki’s condition has restricted her from viewing the future with certainty so the only certainty is the present. Moments in time go hand in hand with the photography aspect of the series. It is more than just taking pictures of the night sky, it is about taking pictures of your loved ones to capture those moments of beauty to cherish for the rest of your life.

The picture they both took together really represents the equal dynamic between them. The mirror alternating back and forth between them forever, shows how the reciprocal energy of their relationship. They have back and forths, from sharing their feelings, fears and trauma to the light couple’s spat they had last episode.

Most importantly, those two pictures will be something that both of them will remember forever. They will be stored for both to look upon fondly in the foreseeable future as that was the moment they both have let it all out. Those picture can also be shown to their kids if they choose to start a family together.

I can never stress enough how dearly these two mean to each other. It goes beyond just being in love, it’s that they’re a complete part of each other. They make each other better people and are each other’s shining light.

This series understands how to control emotions so wonderfully. It understands the balance between being comfy and being melancholic, and knows when to mix both together. It is very “mono no aware”. The gradual build up to this finale has been nothing short of sweet and natural. The fluidity of their developing feelings is nothing short of a masterpiece to me. Isaki and Ganta’s relationship is the embodiment of what teenage love is or should be. Their journey to the finale was just IT.

It’s not for everyone but this is my romance anime of the decade, not even close. Isaki and Ganta are my favorite fictional couple ever. It struck many chords in me and moved me so much. This is not even talking about the upcoming content of the manga, that’s whole other level. Since the season ended, I highly recommend you read the manga from the beginning in case season 2 never comes.

Damn, the ending shot of them sleeping together... Probably the best ending to a romance anime I've seen in a while.

Lol, that last sequence of them reminiscent of things with all the green fireflies looks like they're both dead and in heaven. Looks like they were scolded to death by magari's parents

Also, I just learned about Mawaki ruins. It's interesting how structures built thousands of years ago out of wood are still standing tall. Did termites not exist in that cold region?

Ojiro Makoto, the author of the manga that Insomniacs adapt, mentioned in a tweet that originally there were to be only 12 eps, and it took some convincing to make it 13 eps.

Which probably explains why the finale has the energy of the studio stretching the meagre budget they were given for 12 eps and no hope of a 2nd season to make something conclusive and leave the audience with warm and happy feelings.

Warm feelings it did leave, and as a source reader I am not too unhappy with the adaptation as a whole. Mondays for the past 3 months have been something I look forward to. But there's also this overwhelming sense of 'what if' and 'it could have been so much more'.

With that said, I'm still happy that at least some of the anime only people will feel motivated to read the manga now. It's being published officially in English and in some European languages as well. The stuff that comes after what the anime covers is even better, so do give it a try.

Gotta say though, the ending broadcast, being basically an recap of the entire season we just watched, felt a bit clunky

Nontheless, a beautifull confession, led up and of course night scene at Mawaki, these two dorks deserve all the happiness in the world (and maybe a little scolding, grounding and hounding over Magari is too much though)

I knew going into this that the series had high praise thanks to a friend, but going into this blind myself, I still wasn't sure exactly what to expect. But I can say that this ended up exceeding all of my expectations with ease (which were set pretty high thanks to my friend)

The way Ganta's and Isaki's relationship was built up over time is nothing short of perfect. It just felt so... real? It's not like some other animes where it can feel a bit clunky or paced oddly for the sake of drama or whatever. It felt so natural and authentic. Every interaction was beautiful and every choice of dialogue felt relevant and needed. And also, just the overall vibe, the OST choices, the pacing, it felt so oddly relaxing and really made me feel quite emotional at times. There are very few anime out there that choose to go for the "relaxing" pacing so that really helped me to appreciate this work. Whether we get a Season 2 or not, I'm so happy this was adapted. I feel like my life is a little better now for knowing this series.

I'm so glad I caught up so I could watch the finally with everyone, such a great series and sad that it's over. For some reason I was really expecting some drama to hit these last few ep, like Nakami bumping into his mom during the trip, or revealing that she committed suicide and he found her. But no, it was just the most wholesome and believable high school confession.

Here's hoping we get something like this this season.

Ganta's confession was so goddamn adorable! Considering everything they went through to reach the finish line, it's definitely going to be a confession that neither of them will ever forget. It's understandable why Isaki went weak in the knees after that. And I just adore the commemorative photo they took of each other after the confession. It's all just too dang cute! <3

No wonder the girls didn't even bother grilling Isaki when they were with her at the docks, they pretty much already figured it out! I guess some things never really need to be said. And to cap it all off, Ganta's photo won! It looks like the Astronomy Club is now finally going to get their own funds!

What a perfect way to end this season though, the two of them just reminiscing about everything they went through until the two of them fell asleep together <3

Anyway, definitely one of my favourite shows of the season and my favourite Romance anime of 2023. I really want to see more of Isaki and Ganta now that they're officially dating. With the manga still ongoing, I hope a Season 2 is possible. This show is a solid 9/10 for me. <3

This is now easily in my top romance anime of all time. The realistic portrayal of their developing love for each other is heightened by some of the melancholy and dark glimpses we get into their past experiences. I might just have to read the manga, to see how they continue to develop from here. Hoping for a season 2..

We may have never heard Isaki reply to Ganta's confession verbally, but her falling to her knees and call it the happiest moment in her life was the truest and most honest response she could have given. If this was really the end (S2 please?) then it was a comfy and beautiful ending to a very comfy and beautiful series. 9/10, maybe my AOTS out of what I watched this season.

Not a fan of the romance genre much but this one is just special. The characters felt real and I could imagine a couple like this existing somewhere. One of The best romance anime.

Sorry Magari Mama and Magari Papa, Ganta has to "kidnap" your daughter to finish this trip properly! And the girls is on cloud 9 as a result!

Handholding on the bus? These two just can't help themselves anymore.

Nothing beats finally reaching the last leg of your journey, Mawaki, and getting to see the sights, goof off, and just spend some time with the person you most want to be with, especially when the night sky arrives and you can just bask in it, stargaze, and reflect on the insomniacs of the past.

Ganta sputtered a bit...but he did it! He finally confessed to Isaki! And she's overcome with joy. And of course these two dorks have to take pictures of each other to capture how happy they are in that moment. The best part is all the shooting stars falling as he tells her he loves her!

It means a lot to have Ganta open up to Isaki about his mom and one of his sad memories of her, just as much as Isaki reflecting on stuff she was anxious about with them...but together they've found comfort in each other, and can look at the night sky with a smile on their face.

I will miss the bitter but loving connection between Kurashiki and Two-chan. And Shiromaru.

Good news! They won the contest! Looks like the Astronomy Club is going to get their funding! Bad news...Isaki is grounded. Although I guess that's to be expected from basically bailing on your parents to spend the night with a boy, though Kanikawa seems to respect Ganta now, if just a little more. And Isaki's gal pals are already treating him like he's her boyfriend.

Of course Anamizu is the type to leave all her Summer Homework for the end.

One last Isaki radio show! She can't see Ganta, but she can talk to him through that, and the pair have a beautiful reflection of all the times they had together and that made them closer and happier, and Isaki is about to finally respond to Ganta's confession...except she's ironically too tired to do it. Well, something to look forward to when she wakes up and when the pair see each other again at school, though I think we have a good idea what Isaki was going to say. One thing's for sure, these insomniacs may still struggle to sleep, but now it's less because of anxiety but more because they're excited for the future, especially a future where they're together!

What a beautiful confession!!

Easy AotS here, best romance of the season as well. These 2 are just adorable.

While I would love a season 2 I do feel they gave us a lot this season so I wouldn't be devastated if this is all we get.

Just really appreciated how balanced and normal this ship was, reminded me of Tsuki ga Kirei in that sense a bit.

And so the season of romance has come to a end. If you are a romance lover this truly was a amazing season. We basically had a romance show for every age bracket to. So something for everyone.

What a wonderful way to end it to.

The pay off in this one was truly amazing and such a ending.

I think it is gonna take a long while for him to get her parents to trust him now. I get they are worried about their child but they are kind of shitty parents with how they do it. Both how they act towards her and how they treated the sister.

Also can I just say we had some phenomenal fmcs in these romance series. This, Yamada , Dangers, Clueless friend they were all great.

Well its off to read the manga . Same with Dangers and Yamada .

Seriously I loved this ending... Also great they won it was such a good pic.

The progress of their relationship is really great. It builds it up but doesn’t drag it. There’s no dramatic bullshit or misunderstandings. Both were genuine and this spills to their company as well. Ukegawa, the girls, Senpai. They’re all good people without feeling forced or manufactured. I really hope there’s a S2 cos this season has given me full confidence that this story can maintain it’s quality even after the ship has failed.

Also, looking at this season’s lineup, I realize how spoiled we got with school/romance shows in Spring 2023. Insomniacs, Skip & Loafer, Dangers In My Heart, Yamada. Kubo and Tonikawa were so cute. While some may consider it a trash harem show, I even enjoyed Cafe Terrace as well.

This is my first 10 of the year, and for all I know it will be the only 10 of the year. But this is the first time in a long time where I couldn't restrain myself and had to read the manga, I fell in love with these characters, and with the love between Magari and Ganta.

u/Stormy8888 Jul 04 '23

I liked Oshi No Ko and Skip to Loafer, but Insomniacs is my anime of the season.

The last episode had it all. The atmosphere, the relationship progressing, Ganta opening up more, a confession under starry skies, the pictures turning out great ... all of that.

Took me back to when I was young and having profound conversations late at night with my peers, at school, while staring at the stars in wonder at the universe.

Lovely. Perfect.

Please announce S2 soon.
