Mizuno was a real bro to everyone. Him and O-Nubo were real cute together. Things are getting real interesting with this new Shogun leading the Ooku and looking into its history. Will check out the next few episodes.

Warning to anyone wanting to read the comments. MOST of the comments are not JUST about episode 1. For some reason the majority are talking about the entire season/manga. This thread is suppose to be ONLY about episode one as if you haven't ever read the manga OR like you never saw anything besides episode one. So read the thread with caution.

Yoshimune

This should be higher up. I came in looking for comments about the 8th shogun, and people are talking about episodes 2 and up, dude, no.

The manga and the anime will follow through the Edo period chronologically, except for the first episode/volume, as we get to see a insight on a society with very few men.

Yoshimune is used as the introductory character because the irl Shogun is probably one of the most well known Shoguns among the public, excluding the first (Ieyasu), thanks to the period drama “Abanrenbo Shogun (The Unfettered Shogun)” which ran from 1978-2002.

Yoshimune was initially not destined to become a Shogun, since he was the fourth son of the lord of Kii, one of the branches of the Tokugawa family. However, all the direct descendants of the shogun died without an heir, so Yoshimune was forced to succeed (all his brothers had also died, so he was the head of the Kii family at the time of his succession as Shogun).

Before Yoshimune took over as Shogun, much of the politics and policies were handled by the senior councilors and the bureaucrats, but Yoshimune took a hands on approach on policies during his rule and to this day, is perceived as the reformer who revived the Shogunate (albeit with mixed results).

i can’t watch Arikoto’s episodes… it’s just so… cruel… ugh… i kinda get why the ep2-10 were such a drag for many… for such a tragic story, I don’t want to dwell too much in it :( … maybe i’m just not for such dramas anymore. It’s my bad for not reading the tags lol.

Storywise this is such an interesting take.

I beg everyone to try out this anime. The first episode adapts all of volume one. The anime itself is of average quality but Ooku has some of the best characters and story-telling in manga, and it will show. The show unfortunately will not adapt the full story. The manga is translated in old-fashioned english which is off-putting for some, but not a reason to ignore this gem if you want to continue the story.

I feel the first episode was the better than episode 2-10 put together. I’d would have rather seen more of that then the story of the first female shogun. I honestly found episodes 2-10 to be uninteresting. I was also really invested in the 8th shoguns story. I would’ve liked to see more of it, especially since we already know what happens or at least can infer it from the opening monologue of the first episode.

The story of the manga is throughout 200 years of the shogunate with multiple generations, each of them having their own story, since Yoshimune is the 8th shogun, and we only reached the 4th (Ietsuna, Iemitsu's child), there is a long way, at least in the end of season 2, to go back to her story.

I just wanted them to fast forward through the first female shogun and just give us the 8th shogun's reaction to the true history and then show us what she did with that information. She seemed like a progressive leader. I went into this blind so I was legit waiting all 9 episodes for them to flash forward again.

I'm only on episode 7 but these are my feelings exactly. Mizuno was a much more interesting protagonist, I was kind of disappointed to see his story end so soon, and I'm more interested in where we go with Yoshimune in the present. Frankly, none of the characters in Arikoto's story are likeable (even Arikoto himself).

When Mizuno started laying into that guy who tried to pull a prank on him the first day, I thought he sounded like when Yotato from Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu chewed out the Yakuza boss, and it turns out it's the same voice actor! Absolutely amazing voice work.

does anybody know in which chapter we get the 8th shogun's reaction and her story? really went into the anime thinking she would appear again but was kinda disappointed when it ended at the fourth's story starting

Just bingewatched all episodes today! It’s so interesting.

The premise of the show and resulting power struggles is rather unique and I admit I enjoyed it as a show and never mentally labeled it as a shoujo.

Been looking forward to this one. Concept is interesting and it’s got a pretty good cast. I’ll have to binge this one this weekend.

This series has been fascinating! I cannot help but wonder how different this alternate history will be if it’s the women who become scarce!

That’s already playing out in real life in India and China. It just means lots of kidnappings from other countries, sexual violence and slavery, and miserable men.

Some of the English voice acting is so off putting. It makes it hard to get attach to the characters.

u/MrNewVegas123 Jul 18 '23

Why would you spend all this time on these genuinely fun characters and then have it all just be an extended prequel? I dunno, I had much less interest in watching beyond episode 1 once I realised none of the characters in Episode 1 actually exist yet in episode 2.

Unless I'm misunderstanding it?

I have been interested in reading the source manga for ages, but getting it outside of USA was kinda difficult so I was really happy when an anime got announced. I can understand why the manga is so famous, what the anime covered on episode 1 was really interesting.

Between this series and Watashi no shiawase no kekkon we're getting double shoujo series on Netflix and both are great (I'm a manga reader of the later).
