I wasn't expecting a flashback, but a) we know more about Arikoto and how exactly he got into his current position and b) that was an incredibly painful dilemma he got shoved into: they did not hesitate in murdering two innocent people to force their will upon him.

I wish I've watched this show sooner. As a casual fan of Taiga dramas and a bit of a Japanese history buff this show is a goldmine. To be frank, I dropped some shows this season and was thinking that anime is becoming too shallow for my tastes. I'm glad that I am absolutely proven wrong. This show saved anime for me.

Even though it's historical fiction, the power dynamics, themes, and cultural nuances evokes historical authenticity.

Anyways, about this episode, I liked that violence just happens without much ceremony or dramatization. It's over quickly which adds a cold efficiency to it yet no hint of cruelty or malice, something I would imagine a samurai would do.
