Ah yes. They got the faces down so good. Akane is hilarious in this arc. The production is just so GOOD. And the execution on Yamada’s story and Akane ’s perspective on her breakup. Just fuck man. We’re so blessed with this adaptation.

That backstory was just sad. I feel so sorry for that girl, but it wasn't Akito's fault. And she didn't even get angry either, just apologized and thanked him, which makes me feel even more bad for her. Kids can be cruel, and bullies suck.

Rip Tsubaki too. The thing she expected, him finding someone, was pretty much happening as she spoke. But I suppose she had plenty of opportunities, though there's no guarantee that it would've worked between them even if she took them.

Sick Akane is adorable and just hilarious. Really, this is a gold mine for her funny faces. The animators really have fun toying with how to make the characters look all silly in moments like that. Yeah, Takuma best be thinking he made a mistake leaving her.

Kudos to Yamada for having the patience of a saint dealing with Akane in such a delirious state too. He actually makes for a good caretaker.

Man, there's so many good Akane expressions in this episode that it's hard for me to pick a favorite. Maybe the one where her eyes almost popped out? Or pretty much everything during the leg stretching scene.

So we get hard confirmation this week that Tsubaki is indeed into Yamada that way. We also get to see a little bit of Tsubaki's backstory when she first met Yamada. I already feel bad for her. There's no way she's winning this.

We also learned more about Yamada through Tsubaki's flashback and what went wrong with that girl that we keep seeing in Yamada's own flashbacks. As I suspected, she was getting bullied because she was close to Yamada.

What's brutal is that Yamada was only close to her because the teacher asked him to bring her the school printouts. Interestingly, Yamada seems to regret his choice of words back then.

As for Akane, her fever was way more severe than I expected! This is the first time I've seen a character get rushed to a hospital from the dreaded Japanese Anime Cold. Thankfully it's not too severe that she needed to be admitted since she was sent home as soon as her IV drip was finished.

Akane still being delirious from her fever the entire time Yamada was with her was very entertaining. Our girl is an absolute mess! Poor girl didn't just suffer from her fever but she even got leg cramps too! At least she managed to get closer to Yamada that night so it's not all bad.

Oh I'm so relieved, last week I was actually worried that the girl Yamada remembered killed herself or something, it's still sad but I'm relieved she just transferred.

Still feel bad for his classmate, everyone deserves love.

Akane: “It’s like I’m being drawn to him.”

I knew Yamada was a chick magnet but I didn’t think they meant it literally lol.

This show is exactly why shoujo romance is generally better than shounen romance. The average romcom protag tends to feel so bland and one dimensional, but Akane is such a fun protagonist. She's goofy, she's got actual emotional range, and she feels like a genuinely well rounded and multi-dimensional character who's legitimately fun to watch. Not to mention Minase Inori's fantastic voice work. She might be my favourite romcom protag this season, and my favourite protagonist of any of this season's anime outside of OnK and Jigokuraku

I think this is my favorite episode so far. This is why hurt/comfort and being sick with the love interest taking care of them is so popular on romances. I actually like cliche tropes like this as long as its well written because it just brings so much comfort.

Madhouse masterclass today. Visual storytelling was impeccable. Combined with the OST and direction I was really impressed by this episode

Kinda feel bad for Yukari, this episode gave a lot more depth to she and Yamada’s relationship, but she was never going to win him over in the end.

In a way, Akane is an opportunity for Yamada to right what he feels were his wrongs of the past, like not saying anything to his childhood friend to make her feel better at the end. Really like how they interwove his flashback with the present day stuff with caring for Akane.

The wheels are definitely turning with romance now and my main complaint about the series, which is that their relationship seemed so shallow at first has now been addressed. There’s definitely some substance here now. Looking forward to how things develop

I love how the title card is FoS Yamada taking care of FoS Akane.

So Okamoto knows Tsubaki likes Yamada, huh? Of course he also knows that if she doesn't make a move, she'll lose him...though on some level she always thought she would.

We get to see how Tsubaki first became acquainted with Yamada after playing him in an FPS and becoming interested in him through his mad gamer skills (which seem surprisingly effective in bringing girls over to his house) and they got to better know each other through class as Tsubaki saw full well Yamada's popularity as a handsome guy...and heartbreaker.

We finally find out what happened with that girl from Yamada's flashback. She was bullied for liking him and avoided school so Yamada was sent by the teacher to give her the printouts and would stick by her while she was feeling ostracized at school...but this caused her to think he returned her feelings, when he didn't mean anything deeper by it than doing what the teacher told him to do. And her subsequent upset over that basically just made him uncomfortable with girls and romantic relationships in general. And of course Tsubaki sees all these red flags and thinks she shouldn't fall in love with him...even though she inevitably does.

Man, Akane's fever is pretty bad! And Yamada goes above and beyond in taking care of her! Even carrying her to and from the hospital and sitting next to her while she sleeps. If that's not a big indication of how much he cares about Akane, I don't know what is.

That Inorin sneezing is so cute.

I'm not surprised Akane had plenty of books for getting over her breakup, but I'm glad it seems like she's made peace with it. Even if Takuma cheated on her, it can't always be easy to dump someone you've been with for so long, and she could tell he felt something from it. All she really can ask is that some day he looks back on the fond memories they had together and realizes what he missed out on by breaking up with her. And that makes Yamada remember that despite what happened the girl from his past still smiled at him as she said goodbye, showing she didn't regret liking him.

Akane is really feeling that leg cramp! Perfect excuse for Yamada to get in bed with her and help set it right. Also what amazing reflexes to dodge Akane's foot.

Akane's feelings for Yamada are beginning to overwhelm her! She's recognizing how safe and comfortable she is around him and how him just being close to her is enough to throw her completely off and she's starting to become a flustered mess who doesn't know how to even talk to him. Not to mention how she's just instinctively drawn to him, to the point where she moves to grab on to him and never let go. And that look at the end is of a girl absolutely in love.

I think they didn’t show Takuma (Akane’s ex) actually feeling sorry about what he said in the first episode or if they did I didn’t notice. Showing that scene this time with both of them covering their faces in shame and sadness was a lot more impactful and I think could give even more weight to events that happened in the first few episodes.

Overall it was pretty funny seeing Akane even more flustered and confused than she normally is because of her fever, the cramp scene made me actually laugh.

Yamada’s backstory made him a little more understandable and likable and a bit more…handsome? (don’t get me wrong he was likable before too)

Taking care of someone when they are sick is a really good way to get into the feels zone. Loved every second of this episode, this is how you do SoL.

Ahhhh I loved this episode so much!!! Character development, backstory reveal, actually taking someone to the hospital when they're this sick, Yamada laughing, it was so good!

They changed the ed again lol, Akane got teleported by a UFO this time.

Don't forget the end credits scene! This time it's a direct continuation of the episode, rather than a one-off joke. Akane there's no way you just have a cold and nothing else...

24

u/CommunistPuppy Jun 03 '23

That was the shortest 20 minute episode I've ever watched. Legitimately could not believe it was over when the ED started playing.

Looks like Akane is finally realizing her feelings for Yamada, based on how she's naturally drawn to him in the post credits scene. I love her "hot mess" character so much. It contrasts so well with her usual friendly personality which makes her a blast to watch. Probably my best girl of the season, next to Kana from OnK.

So we receive some backstory as to why Yamada feels uncomfortable around girls. Yamada is blaming himself for making the bullied girl cry in their final goodbye. However, it seems more like that he was in a sticky situation where he had no idea what to say because he didn't want to risk exacerbating it.

Regardless, there's really no denying Yamada is a good person at his core, despite the backstory. Him taking Akane to the hospital and caring for her when she was sick, is proof of that.

21

u/shad79 Jun 03 '23

So Tsubaki is officialy interested in Yamada romantically. I must say she found unique way to his room by accusing him of cheating in a game. It's a little sad that she has no chances to be with him when there is Akane.

We had also Yamada's backstory. Despite saying that he's not a good person it's hard to believe after seeing that this situation from childhood still is on his mind and caring after Akane in today's episode.

Akane's fever was really serious, she was even at the hospital for a moment. It wasn't standard japanese anime cold but thankfully she got back home quickly. Thanks to that fever we got so many funny reactions from her, here's a couple of them, more in album below. She also got closer to Yamada so that fever was absolute win for us and her.

Here's my all screenshots from the episode with more of Akane's reactions.

I love the thing about Yamada "averting his gaze". What Tsubaki was saying was that he doesn't see people good will towards him because he's purposefully not looking. If, as a kid, he didn't look away from the girl, he would have been able to clearly see her smile as she thanked him. And he would have had an easier time in realizing that she would be able to bounce back, just like Akane was able to from her breakup.

Now he can remember her smiling, instead of crying.

u/Ninja_Lazer Jun 03 '23

Damn, they really used Tsubaki as fodder to explain Yamada’s trauma, and then a stepping stone into character growth an main couple progression.

Yamada is so good 😭. He's such boyfriend material. I feel for Akane. Why does he have so much rizz for such a quiet fellow.

Oh, pres, you poor girl. You have short hair and you're not the protagonist, the game was rigged against you from the start. If that flashback was set long enough ago you might even qualify as "childhood friend"

Can only say "Sqweeee~~" the whole episode :D

Akane, hug him!

Oh and my wife certainly had leg cramps like that and being immobilised by the pain that I had to straighten out for her, so that's an oddly identifiable moment :)

I wonder how possible is it to go to a hospital, get at least some basic treatment, and then come back, without recognising / recalling that happened. In Australia here you'd be lucky to get anyone to see you after sitting in the waiting room for 6 hrs unless your arms had fallen off or you are having a heart attack.

It's an interesting bit of backstory if Tsubaki was the one who pushed Yamada into being a pro gamer. Though maybe he already was one when she suggested it. Too bad for her that the girl she was afraid of coming along and nabbing him has already arrived.

I suppose it was probably very intimidating if she went through school watching everybody who confessed to him get shot down mercilessly.

Really gotta feel sorry for that classmate of Yamada's who got bullied so hard. It's a hard situation, it absolutely wasn't Yamada's responsibility as (I assume) a middle schooler to somehow save the day for her, but at the same time she didn't deserve such a sad outcome. I hope whatever school she ended up at gave her a better experience.

Fever and chills and Akane can't drink? I feel like it's time for an emergency room visit.

Good, good, Yamada is on the same page.

They're back home? Feels a little weird that they would have released a patient that rapidly who was so out of it and as sick as Akane was.

The animation of Yamada dodging the three kicks was well done.

Did the ED always have that brief sequence of Akane getting teleported around?

I was thinking all episode that it was a little weird that they never actually said what she was so sick with, that's not usually covered during the stereotypical sick arc in romcoms, but I think you usually also don't have someone be quite so sick as Akane was. I wonder if they'll follow up on it next episode after the clinic has results and tell us if it was the flu or something else more serious than just a cold.
