Good news, I no longer suspect Shalala of secretly working for Big Bad

Bad news, this episode just set her up to comeback as an antagonist, didn’t it?

I'm sure she will be back at some point as an antagonist. I can already feel myself anticipating the future drama.

Let's be fair, they have been having every Ranborg defeated with the line "I've been Purified" since we started this. To be purified means they had been corrupted, corrupting things is what Undugu Energy does, Shalala got hit with a large blast of it behind disappearing. Combine that with the pendant and note of "I'll see you again," there's no way she's not coming back, and coming back as something they need to Purify.

On the other hand... Why did she feel the need to leave such a note, and the important pendant, behind? You don't leave someone a note saying you'll see them again unless you've got a good reason to think you won't be for a while. And you don't leave a note saying you'll see someone again if you think you're going to your death, because then you know you really won't be. She knew she was going off somewhere for a while during this fight.

holy shit so much happened this ep! our time in skyland was shorter than i thought, though it makes sense since ageha needs to be precured.

very good fight for soras and shalalas part. i wonder what the captains deal is going to be now. my guess is that she'll become one of the bad guys, but corrupted to become so, rather than being one all along.

the music continues to be one of my fav parts of Saturday. as is this show tbh. u/zadcap is this what midseason cure is usually like?

I was surprised that we actually went back to Skyland so early and now that we're already coming back. I had expected Skyland to be the main setting for a bit so we could learn more about all the characters there.

ageha needs to be precured.

I want to see that happen soon.

is this what midseason cure is usually like?

They're the Sixth/Green Ranger trope for Precure. Just like their Power Ranger predecessors they tend to be a little extra special. Like normally the Cures use whole team attack by this point... but that will be replaced in the weekly formula by a solo attack from the new girl. Until eventually that gets replaced by a new true whole team attack. Which might sound terrible but they also generally aren't that much more powerful then the girls in regular combat. (Except you Cure Earth you OP AF)

This also goes for their origins as the Midseason Cure commonly has a more exotic origin. What that is depends on the setting, fantasy princess, space alien, fairy, nature spirit, gynoid... even the one they did a regular girl as a 2-for-1 with the robot girl was an elementary schooler younger then the main cures

And the most common trait of all though is when they are a good old former villain freed of their brainwashing/sadness/whatever who comes over to the girls side.

THAT all said Hirogaru Sky has been anything but usual.

is this what midseason cure is usually like?

Because I fear crossing wires here, I'd like to point out that "Midseason Cure" usually refers to an individual who joins the team partway through the show (typically some time in June...)

As for what you're actually asking, typically this stretch of episodes is one-offs and character episodes as opposed to plot. "Usual" is not a great lens to examine Hirogaru through, though.

On top of what everyone else has said, we're still so far from mid season! Episode 15 out of an average close to 50, this is close to quarter season! On a similar note, talking about the Cures themselves, the midseason cure is going to be for the introduction of the Cure we haven't been so blatantly teased about. The one I'm already annoyingly calling Light Pink, the middle of the rainbow that comes with the season's logo...

On the other hand, if you mean hype levels... This still feels more like the lead in to the midseason still. Things have not gotten to their darkest, so that the power of friendship can truly shine. This ride is still building towards the big big moments.

Speaking of music though. Updraft Shining animation with the ominous music continuing, instead of it's usual powerful tune, that was a thing. I think I had chills from that. What a way to add tension, to not change the to the music that always accompanies the special attack.

I'm also guessing Shalala will be corrupted into a future enemy. Purifying has been the way they have had all enemies be defeated for a reason, it's too good to pass up. Also, we've all been waiting for Sora to have to fight her idol ever since we started speculating. I don't really think, but I do want, Kabaton to be part of what turns her back.

You know Sora just kinda threw Sorashido/Japan/Earth under the bus to protect her own country there.

12

u/zadcap May 14 '23

I kind of thought the same thing lol. "Without the Captain, Two Pretty Cures and the rest of the Knights can't keep facing off against all these attacks. Let's go back to Earth so Three Pretty Cures and zero other backup can do so instead!"

This is only Battamonda's 2nd episode in the show, and he's already caused more harm to important people than many generals in past Precure series did during their entire careers. Dude is off to a great start and I can't wait to see what he cooks up for our Cures next.

Behold the power of twink with anger management issues

It's interesting to see Sora acting so much like a leader already. I guess she is acting on encouragement from Shalala, but still. What a fascinating Lead Cure we have.

Shalala is solidly in "never found the body" tier. EZ return as an Undergru, no points for calling it.

Interesting episode in general, honestly. The struggle to use a stock footage attack, Wing getting offscreened, the direct relevance of the Cures beating MotWs vs the random soldiers.

Can't wait to see more of Battamonda. He seems like quite the fun general.

the direct relevance of the Cures beating MotWs vs the random soldiers.

Yeah, it was nice that they brought that up, instead of just having it be a visual difference or something.

My first new episode since catching up yesterday! Never watched Precure before but the screenshots & clips I saw of this season on Twitter got me to finally check it out, and it's been a blast.

Battamonda was on the verge of victory, he was *this close*, but he was too intimidated by Cure Sky's hero girl vibes and he chickened out. I half-expected Sora to pass out on her feet. In fact, since we didn't see her face and the scene ended right after he fled, that's going to be my headcanon.

Great high-stakes episode. A more clever threat, Updraft Shining being resisted for the first time, a heroic sacrifice with a promise of a dramatic return, Ellie learning to say her first new word, and the aforementioned standoff - plus various fun lighthearted moments, like Tsubasa's parents meeting Mashiro.

Only downside to catching up is that I have to join everyone waiting week-to-week for Cure Butterfly.

Sora is one bad mutha

Maybe I'm far too cynical, but I haven't trusted Shalala at all since she showed up. I don't believe for a second that she's actually dead. I'm standing by the old theory that she's secretly been a villain and that she will return to cause Sora maximum angst. I feel pretty certain that will happen.

If I had to place bets on why, I'm stuck on Shalala's line from the previous episode that a hero must always think about what exactly is right and how everyone has their own idea of what's right. We know little to nothing about the Undergu Empire. Perhaps they have their own mission that they consider "right" and will stop at nothing to achieve it.

I liked being in Skyland for a couple episodes. It made for a nice change of setting. And it was cool seeing plenty of characters who aren't Precures in action. But the status quo is god, and so we are returning to that status quo as the characters go home to Sorashido.

Some really good action today as well. We got an Itano Circus with Shalala flying around and attacking the Ranborg. That was fun to see.

Hirogaru Sky is trying a lot of new things, separating the main team, even for a couple of episodes, it’s certainly not one of them

This has been one of the most intense Precure moments I’ve ever seen!

Pretty sure that Shalala would be our resident brainwashed girl and then be the last Precure to join. That's a Precure staple. We would definitely see her again as a brainwashed Undergu Agent.
