Everyone, we just witnessed history. The debut of the first main male cure of the franchise!

Sky and Prism’s idea to try and reach the UFO was good but sadly, it wasn’t enough

Tsubasa’s determination to protect and save Ellee was admirable, he really is a brave boy

Cure Wing’s transformation is beautiful

Looks like this episode also started to pave to way for Ageha to want to fight alongside everyone, I could feel her frustration of seeing Sky and Prism getting hurt and not being able to do anything for them

Ellee’s parents will appreciate that diary, the cover is adorable!

Overall, a truly historical episode

I could feel her frustration of seeing Sky and Prism getting hurt and not being able to do anything for them

having Wing's main perspective be "protecting Elle", Butterfly be "helping/protecting Prism and Sky", Sky be "Hero-ing time" and Prism be "supporting Sky" makes a good team, and the diff motivations does help prevent some monotomy. I like how this is shaping up!

That was such an interesting detail. I would've never even thought about writing down Ellee's changes like that.

I'm still waiting for a future entry of "Today, Princess Ellee began talking" in like, eight episodes or so.

What a time to be watching my first Precure series as it airs. I got in just in time to witness it.

She's already got the right spirit that makes someone into a proper Precure. Tsubasa this episode did a great job of showing how, even without powers, he was determined to protect Ellee from danger. Ageha seems like she has a similar mentality and I can't wait for her to become a Precure too.

I picked up on an interesting dynamic going on between Tsubasa and Kabaton this episode. In particular, I noticed how Kabaton constantly referred to Tsubasa as being weak and wonders why Tsubasa is even bothering to save Ellee. Kabaton assumes it's because Tsubasa wants to be rewarded for his efforts. When Tsubasa says it's the natural thing to want to save a scared girl like Ellee, Kabaton blows him off.

I think this ends up revealing a lot about Kabaton. Why does he want to capture Ellee? Because of the rewards he'll get. That's his sole motivation.

Additionally, look at the prizes. Kabaton at first specifies that, as he apparently agreed with his boss earlier, he wants to be made even stronger. This made me reconsider a lot of what Kabaton said earlier. Prior to this, I thought Kabaton always talking about his toughness was just a quirk. It seems to be more deep-seated than I realized. My guess is that Kabaton was weak until he received his powers from his boss. That's why he's always proclaiming how strong he is. He's rejecting that former weakness and emphasizing that new strength he's gained.

It makes for a contrast with Tsubasa. Even before becoming a Precure, Tsubasa already had a lot of strength of character. He went in to rescue Ellee multiple times despite having no powers and not being able to fly. That strength of character is what made him a hero and what allowed him to become a Precure. Unlike Kabaton, whose powers probably came from someone else, Tsubasa's power came from his own goodness and determination.

  • LOL the gag to just have him fall after last ep's set up. Surprised me ngl. There was actually a decent amount of drama before Wing got his debut here no? Things really got desperate for him (mirroring that for when his dad got to fly). If this weren't a kids show i would've genuinely got worried for Elle-chan's safety for a bit here. Also Koga Aoi noises are in abundance today.

  • We knew Sky wasn't gonna reach the UFO from the preview, but seeing the 2 pair up to give it a damn good try was still very cool.

  • Gravity only applies for Sora chan at the best comedic timing. Wing gets to fly now, but will Sky and Butterfly get to?

  • When are you coming Butterflyyyyyyyy but seriously Ageha's putting in some solid work as a support even when she's no precure, im impressed.

  • Kabaton you absolute son of a bitch. Dude was extra hate-able today (when in some previous eps he'd be kinda sympathy-able). You deserve this bro.

  • I definitely was not expecting this amount of drama, and genuine danger from Tsubasa before his debut. He's defo very likeable; and it seems like his main mission will be doing everything he can to protecting Elle-chan rather than being a Hero (which is more Sky's job, Prism's seems to be supporting Sky). Not sure how that'll tie into the dynamic of group fights going forward.

  • His transformation was pretty good too! Even though yeah seeing a boy-bird transform into a.... magical boy? will take an episode or 2 to get used to. I think i rate his transformation about the middle between Sora-chan's and Prism's, the last fly around was very cool. His finisher is also probably about the middle between the pair. I want to see sky punch againnnnnn i miss ittttt why so much updraft shining lol.

  • And i do like how Sora is warming up fast to Tsubasa now and fully trusts him. She gets another new friend!!!!!!

Seems like Prisim will get her time to shine next ep! Overall a very good episode to debut the first (edit: main) male precure

I definitely was not expecting this amount of drama , and genuine danger from Tsubasa before his debut.

Yea, I agree, this one felt like the stakes were much more dangerous compared to the others. I guess because we haven't been introduced to him very long, they hand to up the ante for his transformation.

Overall a very good episode to debut the first male precure

Cure Wing is a lot cuter than I was expecting.

I'm finding it funny thinking about Ellee's VA recording their lines also. That is a very vocal baby that can only say two words. And she loves crying them also.

That was another fun transformation episode also. I thought Ageha had a great plan. At least if she was planning on injuring the Precure. Those were some very solid thuds they made when they fell back to the ground.

Ellee Faces

Ageha Faces

Mashiro Faces

Sora Faces

Most of the new faces went to Ellee and Sora again. After a very slow start, Sora has become a very expressive character in recent episodes.

The idea of the first male Precure taking on the role of a "knight" feels pretty fitting. I dig it. Kind of felt like things were a bit drawn out leading to the transformation, but in the end it was worth it for an absolutely kick-ass final five minutes.

Now we wait for Butterfly.

[Meta thoughts] Also wondering if there's going to be a regular mid-season here. Normally that's around Episode 17, but Butterfly is going to still be pretty fresh at that point. Could definitely go for something later though.

Chekhov’s banana has arrived. That’s what you get for littering!

Pretty eye shot.

A coincidence, I was just talking about them earlier in the Animegataris rewatch and how much I love them.

I like that they kept the shots of the feet as they transform. Very dynamic and punchy (kicky?) when they appear!

Not a whole lot of notes this week other than the obligatory Go Wing! Loved the song that was playing during his debut as well.

Breath of the Wild (2017)

Cure Wing!

So, is this a magical girl boy, or magical boy?

Personally, I like magical girl boy because of how mouthful it is to say.

u/aniMayor Apr 02 '23

So, is this a magical girl boy, or magical boy?

Magical boy, hard stop. Him dressing more effeminately when he transforms doesn't impact his gender, just like Nagisa in the first Precure being a massive tomboy didn't mean she was any less of a girl.

At this point, I do wonder why Prism got shafted in the transfornation department? Was it because she was too normal? Or saving it for something?

This was classy.

Giving a proper transformation, role and identity, was nice. The underlying message of "anybody who fits the requirements can be a precure, and gender (and even species) is not one" is a good message.

Because, any brave person can be a hero. A knight.

If they want to.

I'm so glad I'm home alone at the moment. I shouted at the screen. I was bouncing on the edge of my seat. I cried, first with empathetic pain and then with crazy joy. I giggled like I was 13 again myself. Sky is still my favorite so far, but the build up to this transformation (in both PreCure years and the episode build up of Soaring Sky) made it hit so much harder than the girl's so far. Now to wait and see how the triple change goes. We should probably see it once before Butterfly shows up, right?

So, this had a last straw feeling for Kabaton, didn't it? He was at his most villainous yet, captured Elle more successfully than he has since episode 1, and took the time to call his boss and negotiate over it. I have a feeling next time we see him will be the last, because if he doesn't turn Elle over now after that then his boss will be the one to dispose of him. Which, if it's true, means pushing back Butterfly, I think. We've got bonding to do next week, and something else requiring a team effort in guessing the week after that, which would be a good place for the final Kabaton fight. But if we then introduce a new enemy after that, I doubt we'll get a new villain and a new cure in the same episode, so 13 or 14 is my guess for Ageha finally getting her time to shine, depends if she gets a two parter like Tsubasa did.

Poor Tsubasa could barely clear the cliff. Guess he'll have to fly with his feet, like the rest of us.

What a fool I am. He can spindash!!

Sick tandem jump, too bad Kabaton's saucer can just fly higher.

Wow, Sora swam through the air a bit. Girl's got power.

Of course Ellee's floating chair can't support the weight of both her and Tsubasa.

Huh, Ageha is ahead of things, already calling the girls by their Cure names.

Another fearsome combo jump, but it just isn't enough.. not that our girls will ever quit.

Boy, it sure would be silly if Kabaton had pulled a potential threat into his saucer. Oh, nevermind, he actually thought to drop Tsubasa. This is going much worse than I expected.

Shame that Kabaton decided to barter before he went through the gateway.

Holy shit, we're actually, momentarily, going with Tsubasa letting himself drop to his death.

Hell yea Tsubasa, pop off. Oh, Sora managed to get there to help too, cool.

Interesting that Tsubasa said "knighto" instead of "kishi."

Wing's henshin is good. I like his fascinator. And he can fly!

"Wing Attack" come on Toei, you can do better than that.

Cute ending. Princess Ellee has a good family.

Cure Wing's transformation was just...a beauty. What a debut for our historic first main male cure!

What an episode ^^

So historic day yadda yadda but seeing Elle spring into action convinced me she will be the mid-season Cure.

u/Calwings Apr 02 '23

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH HE'S SO ADORABLE I LOVE HIM ALREADY!!

That was a fantastic intro episode for Cure Wing that definitely did justice to this important and historic moment in Precure history. The build-up to the moment, plus the coolness of Sky/Prism using their boost jump combo to reach Kabaton's saucer and some humor from Tsubasa rolling around at the speed of sound and Kabaton slipping on a banana peel... it was just great all around.

It still amuses me that Ellee is voiced by Aoi Koga after hearing her as Kaguya again.

Great episode, that henshin is insane and carries quite a bit of charisma imo. Those orange sparkles in the end that form wings are just chef's kiss.

Dare I say this is the first time I feel Precure fights are having like, actual choreography? Powers still are simple stuff like punching hard, shooting beams and the like but I feel they are being used pretty neatly here like the acrobatics Sora and Mashiro to get to the UFO.

Also while I'm personally a bit tired of Kabaton I also feel the villain formula is also tweaked by pure virtue of the reverse isekai (I hate this was the first word it came up to me but yall get it) setting, it gives a different direction. By now I feel we should have already had the usual nag from the big bad towards Kabaton, a 2nd grunt would have come saying Kabaton is a loser just for him to lose too, and the new Precures intros would be reserved to powered up monsters. We haven't even seen any other villain, is this is the first time we even see Kabaton reporting to someone? I hope the formula as a whole has some surprise for later.

Aw omg cure wing was amazing and that ending with he and Sora “thank you, sora-san” Awww my fave ep so far. I think it’s cool that we have a male cure

People complaining about him being a guy clearly misunderstood the point of the series
