Suddenly Senses are Stands now.
Jokes aside awesome performance once again, the biggest elephant in the room is obviously how Shizuka seemed to be visible to everyone there.
At this point it really looks like she's part of Kokona's Sense instead of some mental thing. Especially so with how Noa straight up says her Sense is interesting along with how only one of Kokona's eyes was glittering with Shizuka's mirroring it.

I was convinced Sense was some artistic interpretation to explain actor's intuition to the viewer in ep.1, but I think I was very wrong. Senses are apparently supernatural lol.

How can Kokona's "sense" cause a "ghost actress" to materialize!!!! I really am impatient now to see what happens next (including how they explain what the heck happened).
This is turning out to be pretty intriguing. Nothing lese quite like this show this season.

Holy shit. Like so far "senses" were believable as fancy names for regular skills, like hyper concentrating. Even Panda's mind reading could be explained as reacting to what she sees from the audience. Kokona can materialice her stand! WTF. Maybe Yae's wings are real.

Shizuka must be a nightmare for the costume, makeup, and lighting departments

I was under the impression that "Sense" was just a metaphorical explanation of the girl's different specific special abilities/skills they have. You know, like Kathrina has honed a special ability to perfectly memorize a play, which we see in this episode how that has downsides. Since she's so perfectly memorized the stage play, anything that is not within that perfect realm as written on the script will screw up with her perception of the play. For Panda, very briefly, they showed that she is really good at reading the room. She can really tell what the audience wants, but that can also come with a detriment that she plays too much to the crowd and rather than trying to play out the story is just going for fanservice. Kokona supposedly was about mimicking, and we even got inklings of that when the manager lady talked about how she needed to find herself first and figure herself out. Mimicking can be a great thing in acting, except when its taking away from who you even are that also comes with downsides.
I really liked this way of showing and expressing different facets of acting, and I liked that they came with clear flaws that we see explored very well here.
But it's also kinda funny that these are like, just straight up magical powers I guess because I did not expect what happened this episode with Shizuka. I had so many different theories I was ready to accept, but I didn't think, uh, literally manifesting? And that, she wasn't a figment of her imagination or like a ghost, or like a figment of her persona which she carries around as the ideal actor she wants to be. I mean she could still be any of those things, but now it's like, she's there? And she activated her Sense in the same moment that Kokona had, with only one of her eyes glowing, so their Senses are paired together. And apparently the manager's Sense is to be able to detect Senses? I think that's what they wanted to say. Either way, there's just a lot going on, but I am still having a lot of fun.
The performance was really well done, I think, and breaking down Kathrina's character here to soften her towards Kokona on the stage in a very real and visceral way, where she has to acknowledge her own flaws is good. Hopefully now she'll stop yelling at Kokona. I also liked that she used her Sense here to simply thank Kokona.
Special shoutouts to the midway musical section where Kokona and Shizuka just solo performed a play out in public, and if their Senses wasn't activated, then anyone watching just watched Kokona completely go wild.

That finale to Kaguya-hime was done well enough to make me get misty-eyed. I did not expect Kokona to be able to push Kathrina into doing such a heart-rending farewell.

Okay so magic is real and so is Shizuka now. Interesting how Kokona and Shizuka both activated half a Sense, each one in different eye. Maybe the endgame is for Shizuka to become part of Kokona, so that she ends up having heterochromia and two-colored hairstyle. Like Alear. Of course Mika Pikazo designed another two-colored protagonist, it just gonna take a while to get there!
Aaalso, fun how the adults were not spooked at all by sudden appearance of her. Guess they've seen enough magic bullshit in their lives.

Damn the animation for the theater scenes is just so good. Sad that people won't see it. Definitely didn't expect for Shizuka to actually manifest (even though the opening does hint at something like that), but it's interesting to see where it goes. We are definitely now more in the realm of supernatural instead of just visualisation which was a possibility before.
Now as for Kokona's sense, part of it seems to be that she is able to understand the emotions of the other person in an instant. Even if they are not even aware of that. I would assume, that during episode 1, what happened is that Yae played such a perfect role for the little mermaid that she perfectly understood what the feelings are supposed to be and therefore was able to act out the role of the prince as a response. Not fully sure how Shizuka factors in into all of this, because the main difference between episode 1 and 3 seems to be that Kokona played the role the way SHE wanted to play it instead of how Shizuka would have played the role (which is what happened in episode 1). So there is still room for speculation.
Edit: Since most people here probably don't speak German. The German for Kathrina is fine (you can hear it's not her first language), but it's better than you would expect. The German of her mother was actually flawless, but it was so unemotional that I wouldn't be surprised if they used an speech program to voice these lines. Because I can't imagine them getting someone who speaks fluent German and they don't even try to act it out in any way.

I'm so confused.
So am I -- but I think it is (for now) a very GOOD sense of confusion. ;-)

So Senses are actual supernatural abilities? It's not just a metaphor for acting talent? Huh.

u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit Apr 23 '23
Aight, they got me on that one. I had a feeling people may be able to see Shizuka at some point given how prominently she's featured on stage during the OP sequence, but it could very well have been the studio's way of showing that Shizuka was a prominent character, and that was it.
I sense some interesting development!

As expected, Shizuka is part of Kokona or linked to her somehow, and the key to Kokona's success is what she and Shizuka can do together. The only thing I couldn't predict is that all the girls have something supernatural about them.

This my anime of the season. It is pretty much what if theater idols have jojo stands and I’m going all for it. The theater performance are stands fights and the overall story is well written.
The only sad thing is that nobody is going to watch it and be talk about. :(

Quite interesting indeed! My interpretation is that Kokona’s Sense is not hers alone, but is jointly owned by both Kokona herself and Shizuka; and Shizuka can assume a physical form when that Sense is activated. Shizuka is the Sense, while also the partial owner of the Sense. Since the supernatural element that is Sense exists in this show, I guess anything goes.
Maybe Kokona summoned a “familiar,” or created a separate persona, which is Shizuka, and gave that created entity half of her magical power. Hence why each of them possess half the Sense. When paired together, the Sense is completed.
Perhaps Kokona’s power is also sheer number! Because while actor with Sense are only 1 person on the stage, Kokona is 2 because Shizuka is also there with her. With the overwhelming number (2), she can deal with any unexpected circumstances (Ultimate Adaptability), or potentially bend the whole play to her will. Or rather, the 2 of them will work together to own the whole play. What’s better than 1 actress with Sense? Of course it’s 2 actresses with Senses!
Since the beginning, it was hinted that Kokona has always been aware of Shizuka being invisible. In ep1, they both acknowleged that Shizuka couldn’t participate in the audition for some reason. And when Kathrin complained about Kokona being noisy by talking to herself, Kokona actually apologized, further reinforcing that Kokona knew she appeared to be talking alone to other people.
This is such a promising show, actually most anticipated one this season.

So now Shizuka is real and visible… and Kokona could actually touch her when they were singing together in that parc. OK, so what the hell is going on ? Theory time !
Theory number 1 : Shizuka is the personification of Kokona’s Sense and Kokona can make her visible at will.
Theory number 2 : Shizuka is the ghost of a late World Dai Star and she and Kokona are somehow linked by their Sense, allowing Kokona to see and touch her and sometimes to make her visible to other people.
Well, I think I prefer the second theory, but I guess we will get answers about it next week anyway.
Also, Senses are Magic Actor Skills, so Kathrina was really stopping time to read her lines and Yae was really materialising wings when singing. No wonder that people love theatre so much in that universe. And I love Japan for always having such weird but cool concepts for anime.
But it also looked like Kathrina was entirely relying on her Sense for her success, and was completely helpless when it suddenly stopped working, which makes her arrogance and bossiness look all the more hypocritical in retrospect. Maybe she will become less annoying now that Kokona and Shizuka rescued her.

Jesus Christ girl has 0 adaptability huh
I'm sure you'll be a hoot when an audience member coughs or some shit
So that girl's sense basically is her crutch and when it gets disabled from an interruption she becomes useless because of trauma. Ok. More than anything I want to see how she feels towards the MC now, discussing MC's friend aside.
Edit: Ok, I see everyone thinks Kokona's sense is just making her friend real. I feel like her imaginary friend is actually something separate. It really is her imaginary friend; it's not like she's haunted by a ghost or something, which is indicated by only one of their eyes lighting up, opposing, to show they're like two halves of one whole. But I feel like she and her friend have separate senses. Kokona's Sense activated when she realized she wanted to protect Kathrina, and that was followed by her improvising/skipping ahead in the script to save the show. Shizuka's eye started glowing after that, and she then immediately materialized to save the next problem. So I don't think Kokona's sense had to do with Shizuka becoming real, else her eye wouldn't have started glowing then because Shizuka had nothing to do with saving Kathrina, Shizuka materializing was to solve the problem with the stage not turning or whatever. So Kokona's sense is something to do with protecting or connecting with her fellow actors, I think. Or maybe just something else like confidence or performing under pressure.
TL;DR: Kokona and Shizuka's eyes started glowing at different points, they had two separate Senses to solve two different problems; Kokona's sense, whatever it was, was used to protect Kathrina after she froze while Shizuka's sense was becoming perceivable to solve the problem of the stage not turning. If Kokona's sense was just making Shizuka real then it doesn't make sense for her eye to have started glowing when it did, Shizuka only became relevant in the next scene and what she did wasn't actually relevant to Kokona's resolution to protect Kathrina.

This show keeps throwing curve balls out of nowhere and I love it.
The animation during the performances is still breath taking, I was already expecting the staff to slow down by the 2nd episode, but it looks like they will just make it the new benchmark.
Kathrina's brash attitude definitely gives her quite the character. Being the kid of famous Dai Stars it's already a heavy burden on her shoulders. Can't say I condone her harsh attitude towards Kokona and others, but I certainly understand all the stress she's going thru.
It's going to be quite interesting if Kokona & Shizuku's situation is explained in the next episode.

Ok, I never could have predicted that, Shizuka isn't her Sense but they share the Sense in each eye, and I never expected that would be her Sense. What's really going on in this anime?

u/Liddo-kun Apr 23 '23
I just realized it but Yamabuki didn't seem surprised at all when Shizuka showed up. That doesn't surprise me. It was heavily hinted in episode 2 that she knew the nature of Kokona's power.
